Claiming the mountain On Sunday I was sharing with our church an excerpt from the life of Caleb in the bible. He was one of the twelve spies that were sent out to look at the land that God had promised to the people the Children of Israel. He, along with Joshua, brought back the report that the land was good but that it would not be easy to conquer but that they should still go on in and take it. The idea went to the vote by the people and the decision was that it was too hard and they would not go into the land. The people
wandered in the desert for the next 40 years and then when all the ones who had made that decision had died the younger ones took over the land. The land was divided into ten areas, (one for each of the 9 ½ tribes that wanted to go in and possess it). Two and a half tribes chose not to take what God had given them and stayed on the outside of the land that God had promised them. During this dividing up process Caleb he stood up and claimed the land that had been promised to him back when he did his spying mission. He came to the leaders and claimed his piece of land. His cry was “give me this
mountain” (referring to Mt Hebron) and with that he took on the land that God had promised him. How often we read the bible and see things that God has promised to us and we fail to claim them for our own. We fail to say “give me the mountain” that God has promised me and like the two and a half tribes we settle for the lesser thing outside of what God has promised. Can I encourage you today as you read this brief editorial (as I encourage my church to do) to stand up and claim the thing that God has promised you and don’t be satisfied with something that is outside of God’s plan for your life.

Obvious question needs answering Dear Editor - I would like to thank Peter Whitcombe for his explanation of the role of blood in the Christian religion (The Sun 5 October). However, it raises an obvious question which I would like to put to him through this newspaper, namely: was the slaughter of animals in sacrifice, sometimes tens of thousands at a single time if my reading of the Old Testament is correct, pleasing in the sight of God or did he / she see this as testament to the monumental folly of mankind? When one considers these sacrificial practices, as well as the methods of killing animals employed by Jews and Muslims today, one would have to conclude that the modern secular concern for animal welfare is incompatible with religious traditions.
