Being transformed by the renewal of our minds Romans 12:2 says: “Do not be conformed to this world, [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude].” – Amplified Bible. As born again believers, our old (inherent) Adamic nature was founded in sin (self-seeking rebellion and independence) has been crucified with Christ – it has been buried with Him in baptism and through new birth we have a new heart and a new spirit.
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:27). Galatians 2:20 says “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me”, and so as true believers we live in union with Christ – empowered, directed and enabled by the Holy Spirit. Although a true Christian is a new creation in his heart, in his nature, in his innermost being, in that essential nature which governs who he is in Christ; his body and his soul (mind, will and emotions) have not been changed. We still retain our personal intrinsic identity. This means that the “memory bank” of life’s experiences and the habitual ways we have responded to life in our thinking, in our emotions and in our choices, are unchanged through new birth and they are in need of renewal. Accordingly, we must learn to transform our thinking, our emotional responses and the exercise of our wills to reflect the fact that Christ is living in us and through us. We need to build new thought patterns and new ways of responding to life’s situations and circumstances. It is only as we consistently choose to align our thinking and emotions with God’s word and His ways that transformation and renewal takes place. The devil usually uses personal pronouns when he accuses us, so he says to you, for example: “God doesn’t love you! If He did, He wouldn’t allow these circumstances.” Our old thought patterns and emotions would respond in
