Avoiding a poisoned heart The Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 4:31,”Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.” From verse 17 onwards, Paul speaks about born again believers walking differently and living differently from the unsaved and walking differently and living differently from the way they walked before they came to new birth in Christ. We see also that verse 30 says “do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” So, in the context of these verses, bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, slander and
malice in the heart of a believer diminishes the finished work of the Cross in our lives and also the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit in us and through us. In speaking about these things, Paul instructs us that we are to put away all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, slander and malice. All means all and in the original text, the meaning is “without exception, in every kind and to every degree, without reserve, without compromise, that which is in seed form and that which has come to maturity”. All means all and all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, slander and malice must be dealt with through confession, repentance and forgiveness because like leaven, a little spreads and defiles itself
and everything around it. Taking bitterness for example; as born again believers, we must not hold on to bitterness. We may be a thousand per cent justified in feeling hurt, wounded, aggrieved and impacted by abuse or whatever has come against us to inflict pain of some sort, but as born again believers, we are never, ever, in any manner, shape or form or to any degree justified in holding onto bitterness. In the Kingdom of God, as those purchased and washed by the blood of the Lamb, as those who have been translated out of the domain of darkness and who have been translated into the Kingdom of Light, as those who have been forgiven much, we have no rights whatsoever, at all, to hold onto bitterness. Someone described bitterness
in our hearts as drinking poison and expecting the other person to die and the reality is that bitterness in our hearts grows until it distorts reality and it keeps us chained to the past. Worse, it not only pollutes our own hearts but it impacts and ultimately pollutes those around us even as we read in Hebrews 12:15: “See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.” Worse still, unresolved bitterness diminishes the finished work of the Cross in our lives and also the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit in us and through us. Chris and Rosie have been singing together since their marriage in 1987. They live in Whangarei on a small block of land. They have six children, aged between 12 and 22 years. Chris is involved in agricultural research and Rosie is a homemaker who home schools the children. Rosie spent some of her childhood in Papua New Guinea, where her parents taught at a mission school. This time had a profound effect on her life, and after completing her nursing training, she spent some time involved in mission work on the island of Borneo. Chris and Rosie also travelled through Asia after their marriage, and many of their songs are inspired by those experiences. Both have been committed Christians for many years. They long
to see people’s spiritual, emotional and physical needs met through their ministry and song. Their music has been described as heart moving and heart healing. They have a real ability to motivate people towards intimacy with God and towards service, with a strong marriage/family and missions emphasis. Their presentations are warm and intimate. Rosie plays acoustic guitar in various styles, ranging from folk to ballad to blues. During the last 24 years they have performed extensively throughout New Zealand and overseas at concerts, mission weekends, conferences and church services. They have written hundreds of songs and released five CDs. The children are performers in their own right, and the Booms love to sing together as a family. A morning with this refreshing family is an enjoyable, yet heart moving and motivating experience, appealing to all ages, and should not be missed.
