Lifezone Church is starting a new chapter in their history with the first service in their new facility at 7 Oak Lane, Judea. With a larger, purposebuilt facility, pastor Steve Murray sees it as an exciting opportunity to serve the local community, the city and further abroad. “We can offer community groups a place to meet as well as caring for the spiritual and emotional needs of the people of Tauranga through our various ministries and missions.” Steve says the church is also fortunate to have the Pathways Bible College and Cool Bananas as tenants. “Numerical growth within Highlife Youth on Friday nights and Lifezone on Sundays prompted the need for a larger facility.” The building process has been a real labour of love from a number of volunteers as well as the valuable contributions from TECT, Bay Building and Joinery, Carters, Urban Lounge,
Pastor Steve Murray. Architectural Design Group, Open Doors, Stewart Browne and others. “They have offered discounted rates for their professional services and that deserves a big thank you.” Steve says everyone is invited to experience a relevant, friendly service this Sunday at 10am, with free cappuccino or hot chocolate for visitors from the church’s Cappuccino Cafe. “There will be some fun events for the kids too.” Along with the new building, Lifezone has produced a new website (www.lifezone.org.nz) where people can find out a whole lot more about the church. “We encourage personal spiritual growth through involvement in any of our great ministries from life groups through to youth groups through to the creative ministries. “Hence, our new catchphrase “A place to be”. How God is like a mother too “We often talk about God being like a father to us,” a teacher said to her class one Mothers’ Day. “But have you ever thought of God being like a mother?” Some children looked at her, and then shook their heads in disbelief. “Nah,” they giggled, not quite able to imagine such a thing. While we may acknowledge that God-beyond-knowing is beyond gender, sometimes we find it hard to think of God like a mother. Yet the scriptures contain many wonderful feminine images for God – like a mother hen gathering her chicks under her wings, like a woman celebrating when she finds a lost coin, like a
woman giving birth and nursing her child. In Hebrew, the words “compassion” and “mercy” are related to the word for “womb”, giving us a clue to the type of love that God has for us and all creation. How different a place could the world be, if we shared more of the motherly love of God? For one Puerto Rican woman, it was her grandmother who she felt could best be compared with God. “If they asked me to draw God”, she said, “I would draw my grandmother smiling. Because she is the only person that I believe has filled me … so much that I can compare her with God. I would draw a picture of my grandmother with her hands open, smiling, as if to say, ‘Come with me because I am waiting for you’.” On this Mothers’ Day, imagine a God who cares for each one of us with the deep love of a caring mother!
