What is the meaning of life? Monty Python’s movie ‘The Meaning of Life’ includes a song about the universe. The song ends, “…And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space, because there’s [nothing much] down here on earth.” The woman listening then says, “Makes you feel sort of insignificant doesn’t it?” After which John Cleese (a Doctor) asks, “Can we have your liver then?” There are more than 100 billion stars in our galaxy, and they are believed to be more than 100 billion galaxies. We really are so small. One could feel overwhelmed by our seeming insignificance. But that is all changed when we realise the universe is here just for us! From a Christian perspective the vastness of the universe reflects God’s vastness, but this little planet is the focus of his love! And what is our purpose here? God made us to (1) know His love, and then
(2) to show His love. While our gifts and abilities can be used to bring us pleasure, possessions and power, His purpose is that we use these to help others. So our significance is in what we give rather than what we get. And our giving is filled with meaning through the belief that God sees! You see, while things on earth are far from equal, the great hope of Christian faith is that eternity exists. Why? Because this perspective alone can bring fairness and meaning to all human life and experience! For example, rewards will not be given to those
who were the best, but to those who made the best of what they had – and for others (this makes the capable rich person and the poor sick person equal)! And our ultimate success will not be in our achievements, but in our moral (selfless) choices and – importantly - our faith! Could it be that God actually is watching? Might faith and love echo in eternity? Such a belief can bring a huge amount of purpose to your life! “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve” (Jeremiah 17:10). In Ephesians 5:1, Paul encourages believers to “imitate God as beloved children” and although what he means about imitating God is significant and important, let me focus on what Paul says here about ‘beloved children’, referring to all who have been genuinely born again.
Paul is not speaking here of the fact that we are God’s children in the sense of some relationship we have earned or some relationship that is in name only, but he is speaking about the redeemed being deeply loved by God. The term “beloved” that Paul uses of us is the same term that God used in speaking of Jesus in Matthew 3:17 where God spoke in a voice from heaven and said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Although we don’t feel sometimes that God loves us like that when we are going through testing times, the truth is and the facts are that we are the beloved children of the God of heaven and earth. Even the hairs on each of our heads are numbered – not counted, but numbered! Sometimes we feel like Isaiah must have felt in Isaiah 49 when He says to God in verse 14, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” And God says then to Isaiah and He says to you and I today from verses 15 and 16: “Can a woman forget her
nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.” God loves each of us who truly know Him and who truly follow Jesus as Saviour and as Lord. His love towards us is unceasing, unconditional and unfailing. When you are feeling you need a fresh touch of the arms of the One who calls you His beloved, spend some time in the first eighteen verses of Psalm 139. You will find great encouragement in these verses, which speak of the heart of God towards you and of His unceasing care for you. Hear these words from Romans 8:38 and 38. “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” And finally, my sincere prayer echoes this prayer of Paul in Ephesians 3:16– 19: “that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith— that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Visit us at www.jesusfirst.org.nz and see you on Sunday.
