Kia Carens to star in Sydney After making its world debut in Paris, the all-new Kia Carens will make a surprise starring appearance at the Sydney Motor Show later this month.

The Carens show model is being shipped to Australia, where it will go on sale later as the Kia Rondo, so that it can appear on the Kia Motors stand. The new Carens has been completely redesigned from the ground up, featuring even more space and versatility. In reducing the overall length of the new Carens by 20mm, Kia has seemingly done the impossible by making it even roomier than the model it replaces, providing ample room for up to seven people. Clever packaging and sophisticated design elements are how Kia’s chief design officer Peter Schreyer describes the achievement. The trick, he says, is in the combination of increased wheelbase (up by 50 mm) and cabforward design, which places the base of the A-pillar above the front-wheel centre line, thus boosting effective passenger space and legroom in the three rows of seats. And just as cleverly, Schreyer and his design team have managed to create a car with highly balanced and contemporary styling, which are now a hallmark of Kia’s new and distinctive design DNA. The new Carens features a very versatile

interior, including a front passenger seat backrest that can fold forward to create a picnic/work top, a second row of three individual sliding/folding seats split 33/33/33 and a third row of seats that split 50/50 and fold flat into the boot floor when not required. Among the thoughtful design ideas is a hidden storage area in the floor just behind the front seats, where handbags and other items can be stowed out of view. Kia is specifying four engine choices for international markets, including two versions of the 1.7-litre diesel engine, a 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine and a 2-litre petrol engine. It will come with either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions. New Carens will continue the Kia tradition of providing high specification levels and the latest technology, such as LED daytime running lights and Smart Park Assist, which automatically guides the car into a parallel parking space. General manager of Kia Motors New Zealand Todd McDonald is currently reviewing the new Carens to determine whether it is right for the domestic market. “With the general demise of traditional station wagons in recent years, Carens is a very attractive, multi-purpose vehicle that would suit our market – it’s a very handy size, being a little larger than a Cerato hatchback,” he says.

Solid start for Tauranga drifters

Two Tauranga drifters have got away to solid starts in the opening round of the 2012/13 National Drifting Championship series at Manfield. Ben Belcher improved on his sixth place in qualifying to finish fourth, while Cole Armstrong also moved up two places from qualifying to finish sixth. Defending Cody’s D1NZ Drift King, Curt Whittaker (Mount Shop 2JZ Nissan Skyline R34) brought the noise after qualifying 10th – eventually defeating former D1NZ series champion ‘Fanga Dan’ Woolhouse (Castrol Edge Holden Commodore) in a final clash, which had to be repeated before a winner was found. It could hardly have been closer, with Curt’s competitor unable to replace a broken hub within the five minute time limit. Tauranga’s Jodie Verhulst – the country’s top-ranked female drifter - came seventh in

the pro-am competition. The meeting was the first of a new BPbacked Triple Crown series-within-a-series including the third round in Tauranga in January, and the penultimate one in Christchurch in March. All models are equipped with an excellent six speaker, six CD stereo system with Bluetooth and iPod/USB compatibility, which is sure to keep the troops more than entertained on long journeys. Wireless cars coming soon The New Zealand inventors of wireless car charging are touring the country speaking about the future of road technology. Auckland University Engineering professors, John Boys and Grant Covic developed the Halo IPT system which means electric cars can be charged wirelessly instead of needing to be plugged in. With Halo IPT, drivers can park their car over transmitter pads and have it automatically charged. The pads are designed to transmit from under asphalt, through water, ice or snow and can charge anything from small vehicles to buses and trucks. Ideally, Halo IPT’s creators imagine there being charging lanes where people could charge their cars while driving. There were around 200 people at their first lecture in Auckland. IPENZ (The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand), communication manager Rebecca Adams says there were a lot of questions from the audience about the application of the technology and how it would work in New Zealand. Wireless car charging is closer to being a common reality that you think, she says. In a multimillion dollar deal in 2011 the technology was sold to Qualcomm, a wireless, 3G and mobile technologies company, although Auckland University has retained the intellectual property rights. Qualcomm began a trial of wireless car charging in London this year with the strong support of London’s Mayor Boris Johnson who has a goal of making London the capitol of electric driving in Europe. “Encouraging a massive uptake in

electric driving is key to this vision of becoming a zero emission city,” says Boris. The year-long trial will look at driving habits and behaviours of those driving electric cars. Meanwhile, the InterContinental Hotel Groups (IHG) has become the first hotel company in Australia to build an electric car charge network, connecting eight properties across the group with the latest technology. Five IHG properties in New South Wales – Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach, Crowne Plaza Terrigal, Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley, Holiday Inn Sydney Airport and Holiday Inn Old Sydney – now have electric car charge spots in their car parks or forecourts. The five hotels have joined the Australian government’s $100million Smart Grid, Smart City trial taking place in Sydney, Newcastle and the Upper Hunter. The 20 electric cars participating in the trial have free access to the charge spots in the hotels. Existing customers on the network will also be able to take advantage of the charge spots by using the paid parking facilities at the properties. The charge spots deliver about 20-25km of range per hour, offering zero emissions charging for up to two electric vehicles at once. IHG director of sustainability Victoria Rose says the group was committed to helping its guests make a positive contribution to environmental sustainability. “Reducing carbon emissions is not just a global issue; it’s a local issue too. Installing car charge spots for electric car drivers supports our commitment to sustainability and simultaneously helps to reduce pollution and emission levels in Australia.” By Kim Laubscher

Otumoetai motocross winners on track Otumoetai College is establishing itself as a top school for motocross – less than six months after the school team debuted in the interschool motocross competition. Team coordinator Juli Tolley says everyone involved was pleased with the successful season, which concluded with the team taking first place overall in the competition. “It has been a good year and we are hoping to build on this with even better results in the coming years,” says Juli. While some students had been competing individually in inter-college motocross events in the past, Juli says it was the first time “for quite a few years” the school had a team. Juli says regular team practice sessions, with help by team coach and former international racer Cliff Tolley, had helped all the riders. Ten riders from the college competed against riders from 18 other schools at Patetonga for Round Two of the Hauraki Plains College Moto X Invitation Tournament on October 18, with half of Otumoetai’s riders achieving podium finishes. The first overall placing was a marked improvement on the team’s debut performance at the

Round One Hauraki Plains College Moto X Invitation Tournament held at Slater Park in April, where they came eighth out of a field of 20 teams. Highlights of the day included first-placings for Cameron McCaskie in the Pro 250cc class and Matt Kenyon in the Pro 125cc class. In the 250cc class second place went to Brad Holmes, while Matt Nielson was second in both Beginners 85cc and 150cc classes –the first podium finishes for both riders. In the Pro 125cc class Evan Hawkless took out third place overall. Juli says the success by both Brad Holmes and Matt Nielsen was well-deserved, after working hard to improve their skills all year. Coach Cliff Tolley said he was proud of all riders for their “stellar performances”, saying it was great to see the team come together and witness the improvements all riders have made over the year. Other placings included Tristan Tolley’s sixth placing in the 250cc Intermediate class; Adam Greenslade’s 24th place in 125cc Intermediate; Cameron Farley 21st place overall in 125cc Intermediate; Jaden Rodgers sixth place in Beginners 125cc & 250cc; while Chris Pederson placed 13th overall in the practice timed laps, but was restricted from points because of his bike classification. “Dad (Max) had Alabama Autos, which he sold in the late-‘80s, so I had always been around cars - but I didn’t start racing cars until I was about 20.” In his teenage years Reece was the top Bay of Plenty BMX rider (1987-88) – a passion that introduced him to wife Leanne who was number three in the country at the time. But with his family background it was never likely to last. “Being brought up on a car yard as a kid in the ‘70s I grew up with everything from new Chargers, and GT Falcons to Hillman Imps and Austin Allegros,” says Reece – who

has owned dozens of classic cars. Reece’s first car was a Mk 3 Cortina – which he borrowed $1500 off his father to buy. He says he enjoyed the car but it was the Mk 3’s sale six months later that he remembers the most. A tinkerer and fixer by nature, with his father’s salesman savvy he turned a great profit on the car, and says he has never lost money on cars since. “I sold it on Christmas Eve for $4500, gave the $1500 back to my dad and then bought a 1959 VW Beetle.” Since then he has had everything from a VW to a Valiant, but admits to having a special love for Hillman Imps which he says are “really under-rated”. Reece owns two Imps today – one as a second family car and races the other. Reece, who has turned his automotive love into a business as a specialist classic and muscle car auto-trimmer, got his first taste of motorsport in

a Demolition Derby he won in an Anglia at Baypark Speedway in 1989 after beating 70 other cars. With the prize money, Reece bought his first street stock (3.3 Vauxhall Victor) before building a VH Valiant Pacer which went on to have a lot of success. Since then, Reece went on to race a ‘65 Mustang, but it is his modified Imp – his latest car – which is turning heads in the current Independent Race Classes (IRC) series in the NZGT ‘all-comers’ class. The car was the overall winner in the first round at Taupo at Labour Weekend – claiming one win and two seconds in the three-race series. When he bought the Imp eight years ago it was a SS2000 car with a “very successful race history”, which he raced in that class for a few years before deciding to upgrade it – selling its Datsun motor to a classic rally car owner. The Imp transaxle went to Dunedin to be reunited with the ‘Sidchrome Imp’ that legendary driver Jim Richards had owned. Reece’s motoring mind had come up with a plan to give the car a great power-to-weight ratio by installing the engine, transaxle and wiring loom from a damaged 1998 Subaru WRX Sti. The 760 kg car’s 300 horsepower engine can see it go from 0-100 kmph in 3.5 second. It has a top speed of 240 kmph. “Its great power-to-weight ratio helps give it a fantastic start. You should see it go – from a standing start if just flies past the other cars and is usually at the front within a lap.” The cost of entry fees and on-going maintenance has prevented him from racing regularly over the past few years, but he will race every event this season thanks to a few sponsors (Cranston Cars, Elf Lubricants, Stadium Cars, Macs Mufflers, Tyre Works and Holmes Industrial Supplies). Going out in unique style A unique gold Japanese Buddhist hearse won plenty of attention while cruising the streets of Tauranga ahead of the Wheels on Mainstreet car show. The 1986 modified Lincoln Continental is the only car like it in New Zealand and owner Bruce Choat says he couldn’t resist purchasing it when he spotted the classic on TradeMe. “I have always had classic cars. I spotted it and thought it was really unique. “This is the first time we have used the car.” The American town car was modified in Japan to be used as a Buddhist Shinto hearse in royal family members and government official’s funerals. “It was imported to Japan and they cut it down from a car to a ute and put this temple on the back.” “It is a hearse used for president’s burials.” Bruce, who lives in Matamata, purchased the hearse from a Christchurch seller on TradeMe. He drove it up from the South Island

recently and says the going was tough at times as the modified temple on the back weighs about 1.5 tonnes. “We drove it up here. I have only had it a week and half. “It is a bit of a mission to drive. In the wind it is very heavy, driving through Wellington it was wallowing everywhere – its good fun though.”

The left hand-drive American classic features a five litre fuel injected V8 engine. “It’s all complied and registered, it has been a bit of a mission as it is so unique but we got there.” Bruce is hoping to use the car to raise money for charities across New Zealand, especially the Starship Hospital - a cause close to Bruce’s heart. “I have had a grandson in hospital and my niece’s son is in Starship with cancer.” Coordinated by Mount Mainstreet and the National Street Rod Association, the show featured more than 150 classic cars and hot rods, as well as bikes and show cars. As well as the iconic hearse, the main street was filled with classics from 1919 Ford T Buckets, Chev’s, Corvettes, Buicks, and Thunderbirds to a 2012 Mustang. Prince Avenue was transformed into Bike Alley where motorbike enthusiasts got a look at a range of Harleys and Triumphs. By Phillipa Yalden

Great debut for main street car show It was a moment that Bevan “Straw” Lye is not likely to forget. The Wheels on Mainstreet car show organiser stood in perfect sunshine at the Prince Avenue roundabout on Saturday as 163 classic cars drove passed - alternatively turning left and right from Victoria Road before parking up ready for the show. Following the classics close behind was a wave of people delivered to the Mount main street by specially organised buses. Soon, the buzz of an estimated 15,000 people filled the downtown area – a great success considering the event was only conceived six months ago after the upgrade of the Tauranga waterfront put paid to the Rods on the Waterfront event. Straw, of the National Street Rod Association, says plans are already afoot for a second annual show set to run over three days and coincide with the association’s AGM next Labour Day weekend. Straw says the event received great buy-in from Mount Mainstreet manager Leanne Brown, the council, business operators and visitors. He says the park-and-ride scheme worked well and bars and cafes enjoyed a roaring trade. About 30 motorbikes also featured in the event. By Ben Guild Photos by Caro Leuschke

CBD parking workshop disappoints

A parking workshop on the central city has disappointed one business owner who was expecting the council to pay more attention to retailers. “The meeting from my point of view was all about what the council could get out of the CBD and not what is good about the CBD,” says Bill Campbell from Fancy That. “I would have thought they would have listened more to what the public were saying, rather than just continuing on with what the council requires, and I’m also surprised the actual meeting was more listening to Martin Parkes. They were listening to him and questioning him about what he was going to do and how he was going to go about it.” The city transportation manager, Martin Parkes, appeared to be trying to increase parking revenue by $300,000, says Bill.

“Martin Parkes is saying it’s not about revenue-gathering, it’s about the movement of traffic. But I don’t know how another $300,000 of revenue can increase the flow of traffic when there is no traffic to move.” It was frustrating, says Bill, partly because he didn’t know what to expect, but he remains undeterred in his campaign for free parking in the central city. His suggestion it be paid for through a rate on commercial properties didn’t get a lot of support. A quick calculation was that would cost an extra $57 a year for each commercial ratepayer, and that’s a figure Bill can live with. “To me that’s just over a dollar a week,” says Bill. “All they have to do is come into town and park for an hour and they have got their dollar back. “It’s a win/win situation. We get them into (the) CBD, they get their money back and we get a chance to get their custom.”

Crouching tiger prepares to strike You can have it in any colour as long as it is Tangerine orange. The latest Subaru WRX limited edition – the Crouching Tiger – is not for shrinking violets. With Tangerine orange paintwork, highlighted by a black STI boot spoiler and 17 inch black alloy wheels, this latest WRX limited edition sedan model – just 10 of them - makes a strong visual statement. The Subaru WRX Crouching Tiger’s quad cam 2.5 litre turbocharged “Boxer” motor has been re-tuned to produce 211kWs, compared to the standard WRX’s 195kWs and the STI’s 221kWs. It will also feature up-rated STI springs, lowering the car by 20mm and an STI front suspension strut brace and unique numbering for each car. Full privacy glass and black WRX fender garnish will distinguish the new model from the standard WRX. Subaru’s unique symmetrical All Wheel Drive transmission features a limited slip rear differential, a centre differential in the WRX

nescent instruments. Security is handled by a standard engine immobiliser, Datadots, deadlock central locking and an alarm system. Cruise control and the 10 speaker sound system can be controlled from the steering wheel and there is USB and Bluetooth connectivity and an auxiliary jack point to aid

MP3 and iPod use. Like all other Subarus, the WRX Crouching Tiger comes with a three year unlimited kilometres warranty. It will sell for $54,990 and will be available from Late November – early December. The entry level WRX is $49,990 and the STI is available from $69,990.
