Patrolling the frontier Eight large seats, with split folding second and third row passenger seats gives a multitude of combinations, between passenger numbers and boot space to accommodate any situation.

Sideline Sid couldn’t believe his eyes when he picked up a new Nissan Patrol from Bay Nissan at Farmer Auto Village for the next assignment in the Bay Driver car review series.

The beast under the bonnet - a big 5.6l V8 Petrol engine that gives the Nissan Patrol real grunt.

The first appointment on a morning of testdriving the top of the range Nissan Patrol, was to call into the Mount Maunganui RSA (Returned Services Association), for the first of two photo shoots. Outside the RSA, the SUV bigger hitter came face to face with the big gun that stands guard over the entrance to Standing in front of him was a Big Beast local Returned Services headquarters.

Luxury SUV motoring - powered front seats and rear air conditioning provide another level of comfort, with luxury coming in the form of the leather seat trim.

when sitting comfortably in the drivers seat, is the huge side mirrors that provide rear visibility in spades.

Keeping to the 50 kilometre speed limit around the streets of the Mount, became something of a mission, with the Patrol giving the impression of having a beast under the bonnet that couldn’t wait to be unleashed.

Lifting the bonnet revealed a big 5.6l V8 Petrol engine that gives the Nissan Patrol real grunt. Coupled with the 4 Wheel Drive - this is a vehicle that can readily make the transition from sedate highway motoring to any situation that off-road motoring could throw at the Nissan SUV. Motor sport fans will recognise the Patrol engine as the same that powers the current Nissan Super Cars.

Coupled with Hydraulic Body Control Suspension, here is a vehicle that is just as athome meandering around town, as charging off into the wilderness. A pleasant surprise on lifting the bonnet, was a small piece of hydraulic wizardry, that meant there is no more skinning knuckles to put the upright in place, with the hydraulic bonnet hood remaining in the upright position.

However, the real point of difference from the Nissan Patrol competitors, is the 4 Wheel Drive, that allows the SUV to make the transition from a town car to an off-road workhorse. With additional low range ratio

and manual selectors, the Patrol can handle what seems like steep inclines with ease.

A special feature of the Nissan Patrol 4WD is the surface selector for the various conditions that can confront a motorist in New Zealand.

Whether it be sand, gravel, snow or mud, a flick of the selector will provide an immediate answer to the adverse conditions.

Eight large seats, with split folding second and third row passenger seats gives a multitude of combinations, between passenger numbers and boot space to accommodate the full range of equipment needed to enjoy New Zealand’s great outdoors.

While the Nissan Patrol has all the usual bells and whistles of today’s modern cars such as Bluetooth, hands free phone system, cruise control and driver information systems – the Patrol has several other features that make it stand out from pack. Powered front seats and rear air conditioning provide another level of comfort, with luxury coming in the form of the leather seat trim.

Luxury SUV motoring, combined with the vehicles outstanding safety features and exceptional fuel economy, unite to produce a vehicle that is an absolute dream to drive.
