The tournament is being organised by Tauranga Motorcycle Club, at Pirini Trust Motorbike Park, to encourage more Western Bay students to take up motocross and to establish a top standard event that attracts good riders from around the North Island. Club motocross coordinator Bronwyn Atkinson says they are determined to create an annual event, and would love to link it up with other independently-run inter-secondary school events for an annual series. “We want to attract riders from all over the North Island and the initial response has been very positive.” Riders are confirmed from 12 schools from the wider Bay of Plenty and Waikato, while students from Kings College, Opunake High School (Taranaki) and Gisborne Boys’ High are among further afield schools also expected to attend. Large contingents from Tauranga Boys’ College and Otumoetai College will by flying the Western Bay flag. “Having an event like this here does give our riders an opportunity to compete against other top riders without having to go to a national competition,” says Bronwyn. Riders are competing in classes starting from novice 85cc, 125cc and 250cc beginners, along with various age classes for bikes ranging from 85cc up to 250cc, up to open. The event is at Pirini motorbike park in Pongakawa, following modification to the track, built for quads, by adding a separate start line that runs onto the track. Bronwyn says in future the annual tournament may be able to alternate between Pirini and the motocross track planned for TECT Park. By Hamish Carter

Ask anyone to name some affordable compact cars and you will get a list of Japanese and Korean brands, but this should soon change if Citroen has its way. The release of its latest facelift model compact C3 with its sleek European styling, top end features and sharp pricing has Citroen offering a compelling deal that is already generating strong interest for the brand. Tauranga Citroen dealer principal John Hayes is excited about the latest facelift model and pricing, saying it is good to see people waking up to the C3’s appeal. John enthusiastically reels through the car’s extensive features, knowing that all the extras make a compelling deal to anyone in small car market: Sat-nav, daytime LED running lights, reversing camera, auto headlamps and wipers, cruise control, Bluetooth, entertainment centre with six speaker system … and so the list goes on. “People expect to pay that price for a standard Japanese model, without anything close to these features,” says John, “and of course you have the great European styling”. It was a strong argument, but nothing beats experiencing a car for yourself. Arriving at the family-owned Cameron Rd dealership, which until earlier this year was focused exclusively on Peugeot, I am shown over the new arrival. Introduction out of the way, I swing in

behind the steering wheel and take it all in. First impression: smart, stylish, comfortable with a sense of space you don’t normally get in a compact car. Ignition, then off, I pull out to take the C3 through the appropriate tests for a car like this – around city driving, out along arterial routes to suburbs, then negotiating a busy shopping centre carpark. A common challenge in small cars can be a lack of power, with a sluggish response to your heavy foot. As the name suggests it is a small car and accordingly that means a small engine. But I didn’t experience the same frustration in the C3, which offers all the power you need. The C3 has more than enough reserves to respond swiftly when required, overtaking slow cars with ease. Another regular frustration with compacts can be the limited visibility they offer from a small cab, with views through the windscreen constrained by the physical size and design of the car. The C3 tackles the challenge head-on with its clever use of a Zenith roof windscreen – the biggest in its class – which enhances driver vision with an 80 degree viewing angle that brings the outside world in. The massive screen – which stretches 1.35m from bonnet to roof – offers drivers unrivalled visibility and obvious safety benefits. Safety is paramount in the design, incorporating a handful of features to keep you and your passengers out of harm’s way – including the clever engineering of the car body

to absorb and redistribute the force of any impact away from its occupants. Other features include six airbags, Anti-lock Braking System, Emergency Brake Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Electronically Stability Programme that automatically corrects over-steer and wheel-spin. Snug seats, a smartly appointed interior together with the clever use of technology offer a comfortable and inviting ride. An auxiliary socket and USB connection allow electronic devices to be hooked into the car’s stereo while Bluetooth enables music to be streamed wirelessly. Cruise control with a speed limiter, and the C3’s new Gear Efficiency Indicator, help drivers maximise fuel economy and performance. Clever design translates to maximum usable space in the car – with the recessed lower dashboard freeing legroom in the front, in turn creating more legroom for back passengers with the front seats sitting further forward. The 300-litre boot is the biggest in the compact segment, while the 60:40 split rear-folding seats can be lowered to carry a bigger load. Arriving at Bethlehem Town Centre, the C3’s compact size and nimble

handling come into its own in the congested carpark. It is also the perfect spot for testing out the reversing camera – which turns out to be a great asset in any tight spot. The car’s stylish lines and elegance fit right in among the shopping centre’s designer shops and labels, making a fitting head-turning impact. The sharp looks of the top-end exclusive model are enhanced with chrome surrounds on the front bumper, door handles and window, along with 17 inch alloys. While European cars have a well-earned name for good looks, they also have a reputation for being expensive to maintain and repair because of high costs for parts. Citroen have come up with a smart way to tackle this. Just pay another $599 and they will cover all servicing for the first three years (or first 60,000km) – ensuring there are no nasty surprises. Returning to Tauranga Citroen in Cameron Rd, I reluctantly hand back the keys to John. If I was looking for a smart and stylish compact for around the city this would be at the top of my list. With this offering at a sharp price I’m expecting a European compact car invasion on our roads. By Hamish Carter

Dazzling Starlight “I have had different, odd-looking cars most of my life,” says Frank about his collection, with his peak ownership being 11 cars at once. Frank has since down-sized and now has only three in his collection – each a prized specimen that steals glances from passers-by on any outing. “I’ve had all sorts of different looking cars,” says Frank, who admits part of the appeal is the interest it generates. Other unique cars he has owned include a Nash Metropolitan, an A90 Lambert

convertible; a 1957 Fiat 1100 he still owns and a 1960 Silverhawk Studebaker he is currently restoring. But it’s the third car he currently owns – a 1950 Studebaker seven-seater Starlight coupe – that is the real head turner. It is also a great yarn. After years of jokingly threatening his wife Julie he wanted to bring home every unusual car they saw on their overseas trips, he surprised himself by deciding to actually do just that when holidaying near Portland, Oregon, seven years ago. After passing the car one day driving home, he returned for a closer look the next day. But it was only a call to Tauranga Studebaker collector Jack Hoven that convinced him to buy the Starlight. “I didn’t want to buy a car there were plenty of, but he said: ‘No, you’ve just got to

buy that car’.” Stored in a friend’s barn, they returned home a few days later, intending to have it done up in the US for them for use on future trips to the States. Luckily, a jump to a record exchange rate three months later prompted them to bring it home – the barn and everything inside was destroyed by fire a month later. Upon the car’s arrival Frank set himself a deadline of having it restored for a classic car rally in the South Island 14 months later. “It was a battle but we got there – but I’ve never seen a car get so photographed or have so much attention. It was just crazy.” The Starlight was sandblasted all over, rechromed and repainted. Inside, the carpet and upholstery were restored, along with the brakes, gearbox, a new windscreen and

many other details to bring it back to original condition. It also had its engine replaced two years ago. “It drives beautifully. It’s absolutely marvellous – it’s a really awesome car,” says Frank, underlining part of the reason it has won so many awards. Last year the Starlight won the big ‘concourse trophy’ at the Studebaker nationals, winning overall out of 72 “outstanding cars” – the last of about nine major awards the car has earned. “For me to win that it was just overcome. Having done all the work myself it was such a thrill.” Frank now is busy restoring his Silverhawk – a project he admits is unlikely to be his last. “I keep vowing and declaring it will be my last one, but it’s in the blood.”

Nissan’s latest stylish and souped-up sports car the 2013 Fairlady 370Z has arrived at Bryce Campbell Car Sales, and after a short period enjoying the tangerine dream sports coupe himself he is keen to find her the ideal owner. “She’s just magnificent to drive,” says Bryce, with a gleam in his eyes, as he passes the keys over. Better known for stocking used vehicles in the $8000-$20,000 price range, Bryce – who buys all his Japanese cars directly himself – says he could not go past the demonstrator Fairlady when he saw it come up earlier this year. “It was an extremely lucky buy. At the time I got it the exchange rate was very good and I got it for a great price,” says Bryce, who doubts a deal like this can be repeated.

British motoring’s best

Hot rod and American classic car-lovers are in for a treat this Saturday with the annual Tauranga Street Machines and Customs ‘bash’ at Mount Maunganui’s Soper Reserve. Club member Craig ‘Fingers’ Mullan – who last month raced in Australia as part of the Kiwi ‘Black Slicks’ team in his dragster ‘Nitro Ape’ – is expecting at least 120 cars will take part in the ‘show and shine’ event alongside the Ape. “It’s quite a popular show because there is no pressure to go on a run, they can just turn up and show the car and it’s very social.” The event, which combines a free entry car show with live music in the park beside Brewers Bar, will culminate at 1.30pm with an auction of assorted donated goods to cover costs. Registration starts 10am.

As a young university student in the 1970s Bill Sorrenson fell under the spell of the classic MG. “I remember a few of my friends had these cars and they stood out to me,” recalls Bill, who bought his first car under the prestigious British mark about 25 years ago. The 1974 MGBGT still holds pride of place in his garage, but these days it has to share Bill’s affections with two other MGs. “I’ve always been fascinated with MG cars and we had just come back from overseas when we saw this car and decided to buy it.” This Saturday Bill will be taking another

of his MGs, a 1938 MGTA, out on the road to Athenree Homestead to join a visiting group of pre-1956 MG owners who are visiting from Auckland. Ask Bill which is his favourite MG and he tells you he is fond of them all. He describes the 1938 model, which he has owned for about eight years, as a special sort of car – as one of the first of the T series which came out in 1936. The other car in his collection is a Brayshaw MGB – named after Katikati’s Rod Brayshaw, who built nine of these MGs from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. They are the only MGBs that have been built outside the UK. “We have the first of his that he built. It

is a very special one,” says Bill, who finally admits his favourite is the MGTA, “it really is something that is very special”. Bill enjoys doing the maintenance work on his cars – saying it’s an interest of his, but has always left the full restoration work to the experts. Whenever he gets a chance he enjoys taking the cars out on the road on rallied and monthly club runs. On Saturday he is looking forward to catching up with his fellow MG lovers at Athenree where about 16 other cars will be on display from 12.30pm to 3pm. The public are invited to bring a picnic, enjoy the display, and take in a tour of the homestead and gardens. By Hamish Carter
