The most fun you can have on two and four wheels This week’s Bay Driver vehicle review takes a detour off the beaten track.

We’ve thrown together some local celebrities, exciting new on-road and offroad two-wheelers, a couple of quad bikes and the new Polaris RZR into the mix.

Moto Revolution is owned by Ryan Turner.

Ryan has been riding bikes all his life and after making a name for himself in the dairy industry he recently decided to turn his passion into his 9-to-5 job when an opportunity to own his own bike shop presented itself.

Opening on August 8, with a public launch party set for September 3, Moto Revolution is the exclusive supplier of Kawasaki road bikes, Kawasaki and Beta offroad motocross, cross country and enduro bikes, Polaris side-bysides including the Ranger line-up, the Polaris RZR and Polaris ATV quad bikes.

Talented endorsements

What would a bike shop be without its sponsored talent? And Moto Revolution is no exception. Zane Erickson is well-known in Enduro offroad racing circles, racing Kawasakis since 2013 and riding motorbikes since he was seven years old.

His big goal for 2016 is to finish in the top 10 in the Grand National Cross Country Championships. Riding the 2017 Kawasaki KX250F from Moto Revolution, we would say he has every chance of achieving that goal. The KX is perhaps the most successful

racer in the extremely competitive four-stroke 250cc class and has a long history of winning all around the world.

The next local celeb to show their support for Moto Revolution is Tony Christiansen.

Tony is a motivational and inspirational speaker, who lost his legs as a result of a train accident in his childhood.

Well-known both locally and abroad what isn’t as well-known about Tony is he’s an outright petrolhead inspired by his dad, who built him a petrol-powered go kart not long after his accident. If it has wings or wheels Tony has probably flown, driven or ridden it.

Bucket loads of power

Tony couldn’t wait to show off his new toy recently purchased from the team at Moto Revolution, the 2017 RZR XP 1000 EPS

by Polaris.

The benchmark for extreme performance, this thing has bucket-loads of power and suspension the likes of which you would normally only see at the Dakar Rally, giving it the agility for pretty much any terrain.

Sporting the Polaris ProStar 1000 engine, this monster produces 110hp of high output power thanks to its dual overhead cams, electronic fuel injection and four valves per cylinder.

Instant throttle

The secret to its instant throttle response its dual bore 48mm throttle bodies and long tip injectors. Adapted specifically for Tony by the team at Moto Revolution, a special hand throttle has been added along with a few

other special customised features that allow him to steer, accelerate and brake with just the use of his hands.

Ranger versus quad

Moving on to the more practical Ranger line-up, I asked Ryan if my roadside observations of rural Bay of Plenty were correct in that these all-terrain half-tractor half-quad bikes were in fact taking the place of the Kiwi farmer’s trusty old four-wheeler motorbike?

“There is a lot bigger market for the side-bysides now,” says Ryan.

“They are a lot more versatile on the farm and the price point on these has come down considerably in recent years, making them a lot more financially viable.”

Room, comfort, safety and increased accessory options have all added to the attractiveness of these vehicles too, says Ryan.

“Basically, they carry more and pull more than a quad bike.”

Is there still a market for quad bikes then Ryan? “Absolutely, the Ranger isn’t for everybody or every application and as such they are still very popular.”

“We stock a full range of quads starting from the 325 up to the big 570s – all of them fourwheel drive.”

I noticed Ryan also had a kids’ range of these bikes too. Ryan’s daughter Leah was modelling a Polaris Outlaw 50, a 49cc four-stroke electric start quad bike ideal for children aged six upwards. And despite its name, the bike has a long list of safety features including daytime running lights, safety tether, helmet and a safety whip flag. It even comes with a

parent-adjustable speed limiter that allows mum and dad to select the appropriate level of power based on the rider’s skill level. Ryan says there is a 90cc Outlaw option available for the bigger kids.

Need more gear?

When it comes to accessories, Moto Revolution has this area covered too, stocking a massive range of genuine, aftermarket and custom-built gear. Apart from the latest in clothing, helmets and boots for road riders or offroad racing, they are also importers of P3 carbon fibre products and even have their own manufacturing division for custom-made hard parts. For the Ranger and quad bike range, the list of agricultural and horticultural add-ons is endless. And their full service workshop is a hive of activity, with custom options being added to newly purchased ATVs and Rangers on a large scale.

Ryan also made mention of the fact they service and repair all brands of bikes too – not just their own – with one of the lowest hourly rates around.

The verdict

I have to say it made a refreshing change looking at bikes instead of cars this week.

It is good to see the industry is still thriving and is matching the car industry in terms of innovation and technology. I never was much of a fan of two wheels but there is something about those Kawasaki road bikes that has sparked my interest. We must talk again Ryan.

There will be practice and three timed runs - fastest run wins, by class and overall.

Roll caged cars only, it will be interesting to see who gets an advantage on the first day of the Hillclimb Challenge.

Entry is $150 per person. The day finishes with prizegiving at 3pm.
