Weekend Wheels October 24 – Wheels on Mainstreet This is the fourth year that this free-to-the-public gathering of classic cars, hot rods, motorbikes and trucks has been organised for your entertainment, so come and enjoy the display and the wonderful hospitality, atmosphere and great shopping at the Mount. The event runs from 10am to 3pm and will be held at Downtown the Mount, Maunganui Rd Pacific to Salisbury Ave. October 31 – Halloweenfest Taupo CC National Race Meeting Head down to Ricoh Taupo Motorsport Park on Broadlands Rd for this year’s Taupo CC National Race meet. Taupo Car Club will host Round 2 of the IRC Summer Race Series with classes including SS2000, Formula First, Super Mni Challenge and many more. Tickets are door gate sales only with adults aged 15 and over paying $10.

October 31 – Baypark Family Speedway Fireworks Extravaganza Enjoy the excitement of Speedway Racing as well as the Bay’s best fireworks display.

Spectator gates open at 5pm with racing starting at 6.30pm. With the Fowler Homes Kidz Zone there is a safe and secure fun for the kids. Visit the merchandise shop just inside the main entry gates and check out the new Baypark Family Speedway merchandise. Come early and enjoy a buffet meal and a drink in the stadium lounge and walk through the pits, meet the drivers and see the race cars up close before the racing starts.

November 7 – Gate Pa Car Boot Market Come and be part of the first monthly Car Boot Market in Gate Pa. They’re taking some of the stock from the Chirp/Redezine Merivale store and inviting everyone from the community to be part of this monthly buy/sell/swap/free event in Gate Pa, next door to Tauranga Girls’ College. December 12 – Baypark Family Speedway Super Stock Car Teams Race Come and see the mighty Baypark Busters Super Stock Car Team take on the Hawkeyes from Napier. Also for the first time will be a large field of off-road racing trucks, cars and buggies taking on the speedway track as well as some jumps on the infield. Spectator gates open at 5pm with racing starting at 6.30pm.

Under five-year-olds have free entry.

My First Car:

‘A hideous pig of a car’ Rally photographer Jason Byrne’s dream car was an Escort, but unfortunately he had to settle for a Morris Marina he describes as a “hideous thing”.

“I couldn’t afford an Escort so I ended up in a Morris Marina. Honest to god, I spent four pound on new sills. I painted it black and sold it to some old guy for twice what I paid for it and I just about managed to get the money to buy an Escort.”

Jason says it was a “pig of a thing” to run.

“It was an awful thing to drive. It was like driving a tank. As soon as it was wet, it wanted to swap ends. You’d go around a

round-about and you’d end up coming out backwards. It was just a horrible, horrible thing. I don’t really want to admit owning it.”

Needless to say Jason didn’t keep it for long.

“I drove it, and got sick of it and it failed its MOT, the equivalent of a [Warrant of Fitness] because it was on two rusty sills.

So I bought two sills which cost next to nothing… my mate welded them on. We didn’t even paint them orange. We just got that underseal spray and sprayed them black and just sold it to some guy.”

Jason says he originally bought the car for 300 pound and sold it for about 800 pound.

“I was a bit like a drug addict. I had to have

that Escort so I didn’t care who I was ripping off,” Jason jokes.

He says he believes the Marina is probably now rusting in peace somewhere in England. Jason eventually went on to by his dream car, an Mk2 RS2000.

“I do know the Escort I went on and bought, which I had for years and loved and sold it on eventually… One of the guys I used to be a bit of a hoon with in our Escorts. He sent me a photo saying, ‘Look where your Escort ended up’. My original Escort is a rally car in the UK.” Jason admits he hardly thinks back on the

Jason with his Morris Marina. orange nightmare, but he still has a passion for his Mk2 Escort.

When he moved to New Zealand, Jason was diagnosed with cancer, becoming seriously ill and undergoing chemo and radiotherapy.

He took a look at his life and realised he wanted his dream car once more. He imported one from the UK and fully restored it. He loved it so much he eventually bought another Escort – this time it was set up for racing.

His Escorts take pride and place in his garage at home.

reasonably short timeframe.

Driving through mid-morning Cameron Road traffic saw the Prado VX automatic transmission using the lower gears with minimum effort before powering up on Takitimu Drive. Acceleration on standby and the outstanding road handling qualities of the Prado VX made watching the speedometer a priority, as we headed for The Lakes for our customary half-way inspection.

Braking courtesy of the power assisted ventilated disc brakes was top notch while an extremely smooth ride was delivered by the suspension coils springs and stabiliser bars.

While first impressions on picking the Land Cruiser Prado VX were of a big unit, it wasn’t until we stopped off at the new Tauranga City suburb, and poked and prodded around the interior and exterior, that outstanding qualities of the Toyota vehicle were revealed.

The exterior of the Land Cruiser Prado is both bold and stylish and instantly recognisable by the signature five pillar chrome grille. Big black roof rails and side steps are just the beginning. The rear bumper features an integrated step with the rear spoiler setting off the seven-seater to a tee.

A handy innovation is the top-hinged glass tailgate that gives entry to the vehicles load space without dropping the entire tailgate.

However the interior of the Prado VX really took the Bay Driver reviewer’s eye. Luxury qualities seldom found in the Prado rivals repertoire take centre stage. The genuine

leather seats give a luxurious feel, with the driver’s seat combining electric slide and recline functions with power lumber support for a relaxing drive.

Two rows of rear split folding seats accommodate up to seven passengers, with an added bonus of high interior headroom for the tallest passenger. Air Conditioning comes with three zone climate control with independent driver, front passenger and second row seat controls.

The two extremely big side mirrors with outstanding rear view vision impressed, with the inside conversation mirror a nice Toyota touch. However it was the Prado’s storage capacity that really delighted the Bay Driver test pilot. With a man-bag that fulfils the function of a mobile office, the reviewer was delighted to finally find a front-seat central storage consul that swallowed his shoulder bag with ease.

Sideline Sid’s grandson rode shotgun on the test drive and was impressed by the Prado sound system. The 14 speakers deliver high-quality sound, however the driver was far from happy with the blaring rock music selected by grandson number one. There are even two wireless rear seat headphones that give a second audio track option.

Protected and secure is the safety story of the Land Cruiser Prado. Seven airbags provide a safety cocoon with the 5 Star ANCAP safety rating giving peace of mind wherever you go.

The four Toyota Land Cruiser Prado models will appeal to the most discerning buyers, with the genuine touches of luxury, complementing a vehicle that is at home on and off the countries highways and byways.

Whoever finished ahead after this final race at Opunake would be the 2015 champion at the Mach 1 Yamaha-sponsored event and, with rain and wind getting stronger by the minute, the key to winning would be getting a great start.

And that’s just what Letitia did, snatching the lead within a few hundred metres and then stretching out her advantage, although a fast-starting Skye Edwards, from Nelson, kept her honest over the opening two laps.

Her main rival, Silcock, was forced to battle through traffic after an unaccustomed poor start and, although she managed to close in on Alabaster near the end, she ran out of time before the chequered flag came out and had to settle for runner-up in that race and also runner-up for the championship overall.

Sarah took the third podium spot for the senior women’s championship with Mary and Whangarei’s Zia Pitkethley rounding out the top five.

“I was two points behind Katie (Silcock) at the start of the day today and knew I just had to win races today,” says Letitia, a 26-year-old motorcycle mechanic.

“I just had to do my best and not fall off trying. I took a few risks in the first race today and managed to win it (with 21-yearold mother-of-two Katie finishing second) and that meant I was leading the championship, but only by one point with the final race to come.

“Once I had the lead in the final race, I just played is safe. I’m so stoked to win this.”

Steampunk to the Max Are a mad vehicular tinkerer who needs a public fix to show off his or her demented talents?

If you have what it takes to ‘Punk Your Ride’, then make sure you enter the Steampunk to the Max Car Parade and Display taking place in Thames on November 14.

Festival organiser Deb McDonald Brown says to take part in the parade and display any mode of transport will do – bicycle, tricycle, skateboard, car, train, plane, tractor or truck.

“You will need dollops of imagination, ingenuity and determination to modify any old vehicle be it roadworthy, trailered or towed,” she says. “This is real world art using real world salvaged materials in amazingly cool ways.

“We want to celebrate the offbeat, the spectacular, the fringe and the feral. Paint or attach, mould or glue, rivets or screws?

Festoon it with scrapyard junk, how you do it is up to you.”

Deb adds that this is your chance to “release your road rage and steampunk the hell out of your ride”.

There will be awesome prizes for best contraptions. The question is – are you madder than Max? Steampunk to the Max ‘Punk your Ride’ Car Parade and Display takes place on Pahau St in Thames on Saturday, November 14, from 10am to 2pm.
