BMW Group NZ again number one BMW Group New Zealand has finished the first quarter as the leading supplier of premium vehicles in the local market.

Bookings and enquiries contact Caro Leuschke 027 578 0035 email: caro@thesun.co.nz For editorial and news tips email: ben@thesun.co.nz

Registration data from the Motor Industry Association shows BMW finished the first three months of 2012 up 30% year on year and MINI up 45% year on year. “This is a great result for our brands, for us and for our dealers; and has resulted from both the introduction of some exciting new models - 1 and 3 series - and the continued strength of our X and 5 series model ranges; as well

as a focus on delivering the ultimate in customer service to our customers,” says the managing director of BMW Group New Zealand, Mark Gilbert. “Many driver orientated attributes, and a range of very frugal, yet very powerful, engine options further enhances the BMW driving experience. Our success in the first quarter reaffirms that New Zealanders recognise and appreciate that BMW still is the ultimate driving machine.” Further, and on the world stage, the BMW Group has achieved its best ever first quarter. “With over 400,000 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles sold worldwide, we

have had an outstanding first quarter and the best ever in the company’s history,” says Ian Robertson, member of the board of management, sales and marketing BMW. “We have seen over 16% growth in the U.S. this quarter and we expect further momentum with the new BMW 3 Series Sedan on the market, as well as the introduction of the BMW X1 to the U.S. in September this year.” The introduction of the BMW X1 to the U.S. market will build upon its global success. Since its launch at the end of 2009, over 264,000 units have been sold worldwide, making it the leader in its segment.

Nissan Navara STX 550

Navara adds more muscle to the market The competitive and popular ute market is sparking and after going through a bit of a lull in new releases it is now the talking point again. This is thanks to the launch of some new grunty machines from major brands in the past few months.

That company already had the big oil burning engine on hand for its top end luxury cars, so it made sense to drop it under the hood of the Navara, and behold....a silky smooth, ultra quiet, extra grunty power plant. One that takes the agricultural knock out of the ute’s power plant and gives it a smooth Euro sound that will gain it even greater appeal among urban based buyers who may not need all that extra torque, but Even VW has entered the fray with its love the sound of the torque’s source. The car’s no lemon, it’s an onion We have all heard of cars being described as lemons, but an onion? Almost everyone thinks Ivan Allen is joking when he tells them the make of his veteran car. “It’s very rare – I would say 98 per cent of people don’t know about them,” says Ivan about the early 1900s carmaker Alldays & Onions. “People come here and have a look at the car then ask what is it – its’ a what? So I just show them the badge.” The retired Pyes Pa car painter can usually be found in his garage pouring his love of all things automotive into veteran car restorations. A fan of the “handmade” quality of early pre-WWI cars, Ivan has completed half a dozen restorations including rebuilding a 1913 Fabrique Nationale, a 1911 Wolsley and a 1913 Renault. But his big mission now is the 1913 Alldays & Onions. “I just like rebuilding stuff. People say it’s had it, it’s rubbish – but I think no I’ll have a go. It’s like a challenge for me. You are building and creating something. When you are finished you move on to the next bit, then the next bit.” Ivan is a man on a mission. His 14 horsepower model, the only one of its kind in the country – and one of only about 100 ever made, is coming up for its 100th birthday in January. To mark the car’s special day he is completely focused on giving the car a spruce-up. “I’m giving it a birthday – that’s an understatement. It had been wrecked for 50 years.” Wrecked in the mid-30s, the car had been completely dismantled with the engine, radiator and bonnet used to drive equipment in a Canterbury engineering workshop. The chassis and wheels were used by an agricultural contractor who built a “bach” on top of it, towing it as temporary accommodation between the rural properties he worked on. Ivan bought the relics in 1997, after members of

the Waimate Vintage Car Club reunited the parts, and has been parked in his basement until recently. “I’ve put about four years into it – and that’s a reasonably quick job. I’m at it every day doing something – some days I’m at for eight hours, some days for

just three hours – I would put in at least 1000 hours a year.” With so few models made Ivan has spent a lot of his time on the Alldays & Onion project making parts that he needs – simply because they are none available. “You never walk away from a project, only walk away from what you are doing until you know what

you are doing, then you come back when you know what you are doing.” Ivan is well on schedule for his January deadline, estimating he only has four months of work left for the wiring and upholstery before he can take it for a ride. By Hamish Carter
