Discerning sports compact drivers not only want their engines to sing, they want them to roar. Ford engineers made sure the new Focus ST does both, with the help of a new twist on an existing technology. Ford engineers added a special sound tube – called a sound symposer – to amplify the throaty frequencies enthusiasts crave in performance cars. Engineers worked to naturally amplify the specific lower range of engine frequencies found between 200 and 450Hz that are most pleasing to performance enthusiasts through the use of a composite ‘paddle’ that vibrates with intake air pulses. While the sound tube concept has been used on Mustang in the past, the sound symposer used in Focus ST is unique because of its electronically controlled valve that opens and closes based on driver inputs – engine speed, accelerator pedal position and gear selection. In lower gears, the valve is mapped more aggressively, while in higher gears the effect is dialled back to enable quieter cruising. This isn’t possible with conventional, passive

sound tubes. Part of the reason Ford made these changes is that on Focus ST, for the first time, the symposer is attached directly to the intake manifold (as opposed to between the manifold and air intake). “For ST drivers, it’s not enough to have a car that is fast or feels fast. It also has to sound fast,” says Christopher Myers, air induction system engineer. “Part of this is the design of the exhaust, but we went further and engineered the symposer both to dial up the nice sounds the EcoBoost delivers under the hood but dial back the interior sound volumes at part throttle. “The turbo gives us great power across the rev range, but it presents a special challenge from a sound perspective as it absorbs much of the beautiful engine music.” The secret to getting this right was developing the perfect paddle to naturally amplify the ST’s great engine sound. Ford engineers tested several different paddles. Eventually, the supplier developed a paddle with the correct stiffness that yielded the best acoustic response and ultimately, the best ‘flutter’ and low-end frequency sound.

In a niche of its own Subaru Impreza XV

The new Subaru XV is a wagon for the times in many respects – it manages to capture that outdoorsy, adventure-seeking spirit that so many New Zealanders like to pursue, regardless of how urbanised we have become, but it won’t break the bank, or the environment to do so. While our appetite for SUV type wagons does not appear to be fading, rising fuel costs and pinched household budgets are giving plenty of potential buyers pause for thought before jumping into much bigger, often six cylinder, powered machines. And while we might be thinking twice before taking up with a bigger SUV, we still want to retain a machine that fits with the demands modern families place upon their vehicles, including the ability to feel like we can still go (almost) anywhere in them, even if that is a rare occasion. It is a market that is finding traction of its own, with all the major manufacturers offering SUVs with smaller footprints, luxury appointments and often at a price that would lure plenty of dedicated sedan buyers across the yard to at least have a look.

Subaru has also cleverly taken its unparalleled reputation for affordable, admirable all wheel drive systems, and given it an interesting twist with the XV. A boosted clearance height gives it a bit more of an aggressive, go anywhere look ,without compromising on the road clinging ability that is Subaru’s unwritten trademark behind the constellation of stars up on the grill. The XV has a slightly pumped up look about it, accentuated by its relatively short length and wide Impreza stance, it is a confident, upbeat look that does much to reinforce Subaru’s ownership of the AWD sector. The word from Bay Subaru is that the SUVs are selling as quick as they come off the truck, and despite a tough market the machine is earning kudos for capturing buyers’ hearts and minds with its SUV clearance and tight, sedan-like handling.

Fingertip control for the usual remote operations is standard, but the Lineartronic transmission also comes with paddle controls for manual change when desired. For a small SUV there is nothing small about the number of features coming as standard. Even the base level XV comes with a rear reversing camera, Bluetooth hands free calling and audio streaming, USB connections, fog lamps and auto air conditioning. Move up to the top of the range and the extras extend to heated seats, full leather, HID headlights and a power seat, to name a few. Subaru has never skimped on its accessories and certainly has not started with the XV.

Once inside, it is clear the efforts Subaru has gone to make the Impreza XV a real alternative to a bigger car. Its interior dimensions are considerably increased over the last Impreza, not that it was a tight fit either. The seats offer excellent support and the driver faces a dashboard that has a classy simplicity about it – offset is a separate digital display that can offer information as simple

On the road the XV does not betray its Subaru heritage – it retains that grippy, low centre of gravity ability to cling to the worst thrown at it, thanks to the asymmetrical AWD system with no loss of precision despite the raised height. The power to that system comes

through the 2.0 litre Boxer engine, delivering sufficient kick for most drivers’ needs. It is an economical beast too, delivering 8.5 L/100km on the test period and thanks in part to the smart stop-start system that will switch off at the lights and back on again as soon as your foot is off the brake. As an overall package, the Impreza XV has it all, it offers stand out looks in a market where you often have to do a double take to identify a particular car – add in the orange paint job found on one of the first delivery vehicles and you may gain more attention than you want, but those smart honeycomb alloys add to its sporty, slightly rugged appeal also. It seems Subaru may have even created a niche all of its own with the Impreza – sports car handling in an SUV body, with plenty of features and a compact footprint.

Five star rating for new sedan The new BMW 3 Series Sedan not only sets new standards of driving pleasure in the premium segment - the level of safety it provides is also first rate. In the latest Euro NCAP series of crash tests, the new BMW 3 Series achieved the top rating and was awarded five stars. “The five-star rating won by the new BMW 3 Series highlights yet again the advanced level of safety technology designed into all new models of the marque,” says BMW Group New Zealand managing director, Mark Gilbert. “The new BMW 3 Series Sedan has now also passed the Euro NCAP crash tests with flying colours and been awarded five stars. The test procedures carried out by the Euro NCAP (new car assessment programme) are a measure of the protection offered by vehicles in the case of an accident, recognised by governments, motoring organisations and consumer protection groups. In addition to the protection afforded to the passengers in a number of different impact scenarios, active safety technology and pedestrian protection are also taken into account. The passenger safety cell of the new BMW of 3 Series Sedan proved to be extremely resistant in both head-on and side impacts, as well as in the side pole crash test. In all of the accident scenarios, the forces acting on the vehicle were safely channelled over clearly defined load paths and absorbed by generously dimensioned deformation zones.

In addition, the extensive standard safety equipment including front and side airbags, side head airbags for both the front and the rear passengers, three-point automatic seat belts fitted to all seats, belt force limiters and belt tensioners in the front and ISOFIX child seat mountings in the rear provides both the driver and his passengers with extensive protection from injury, no matter what size they may be, or their seating position. In the event of a rear end collision, the active head restraints fitted to the front seats minimize the risk of whiplash injuries to the occupants of the vehicle. The examiners also awarded high marks with regard to child safety. They certified that the new BMW 3 Series Sedan provides excellent protection in the event of both a head-on collision and a side impact. When test dummies fitted with sensors were strapped into seating systems designed for three year old and one and a half year old children, reassuringly at the moment of impact these ‘children’ were all registered as maintaining stable positions with minimal head movements. In the Euro NCAP crash test, the vehicle scored the maximum number of points for the design of the bumper and the front area of the bonnet. This very positive assessment also took into account the design of the structural elements at the front of the vehicle - those that are relevant to head injuries to children in the case of a collision.

Nothing beats the purr of a GT

Ford vs Holden. It’s not a question you need to ask Bayfair’s Brendon Crosby – take a look in his garage and you have the answer. The trained mechanic recalls falling for Fords at about 16. His friend had a Mark 4 Cortina and Brendon soon was looking around for one to buy himself. “I really liked his car. He had done it right up and it looked great. It’s difficult to say what exactly it was I liked – but there is something about the shape, the lines.” Brendon got his own Mark 4 when he was 18 and was soon toiling away after-hours to restore the 1980 model to its original glory. He was training as a mechanic at the time and putting his growing skills to work at home on his own project. “The only thing I have never done on any of my projects has been paint and panel. I’ve done a little minor touch-up work, but for everything major I’ve left it to the experts at Junction Panel and Paint.” By the time Brendon had finished the three-year restoration on his Mark 4, the original four cylinder engine had been replaced with a V8. “I took it to the quarter miles in Meremere a couple of times – I did it in 15 seconds, which I was pretty happy with at the time.” Two years after completing his restoration (1999) Brendon sold his Mark 4 and headed off on his overseas travels – with stints in England and Australia before returning home in 2006, when he brought back his next project; a 1981 Ford Fairmont XD Station wagon. “My plan was to use the motor (a 351) and gearbox (four-speed manual) in my next project. I had to do a little minor work to get it back on the road and was using it while I was doing my next project.” While working in Australia he had headed

to Bathurst as part of a pilgrimage to the Mountain with some mates in 2001, but says having experienced the Ford-Holden battle royal once he has no burning ambition to repeat the experience. “It was a pretty bad year for the weather. It was good to experience it once but I can’t see myself rushing to do it again.” In 2008 he found the car he wanted to do up – a 1971 Ford Falcon GT HO which he began rebuilding as a GT replica, adding a mix of original and reproduction GT parts to eventually finish up with a car he describes as his favourite. “There is something special about the GT – it was originally raced around Bathurst – this particular model was the fastest four-door sedan production model for 20 years running.” The original motor (a 351) had been upgraded to a more powerful 393 with the addition of a stroker kit, increasing the engine from a 5.8 litre to a 6.5 litre and taking it up to 550hp. “It’s got a lot of up and go. I’ve done the quarter mile at Meremere in 13 seconds, so that was pretty pleasing.” Brendon says the completion of his GT replica project marks the end of his restoration days, adding it was much easier to manage these projects when he was selfemployed. “I don’t have the time really these days, so I’ve got no more plans for any projects.” But not having time for another major project has not put him off buying a genuine restored Ford Falcon GT (1974 XB) when it came up two years ago. “There is something about that – having the genuine article. They are pretty rare these days. I had to do a bit of panel and paint and a few little things, but it was pretty much done.” When it comes to choosing between his replica (1971 XY) and his genuine GT (1974 XB), his favourite is the replica. “But if I sold my XB, I wouldn’t mind an XB coupe if I could buy a restored model.”
