Capturing a love of motorsport The roar of cars, the smell of fuel and burnt rubber – it all comes flooding back for Jason Byrne when he thinks of the first Formula One Grand Prix he went to in Monaco, aged seven.

I’m a little nervous as it’s been a while since my last outing. My goal is to try and finish the rally, but above all the main objective is to have a whole heap of fun and enjoy a day’s rallying with friends. “I’m still very inexperienced, but just love the adrenaline of sliding sideways on gravel in my car.” The motivation for Jason to begin rallying himself came in 2006

“I have followed F1 ever since and even worked for them during the 1992 season, driving the hospitality motorhome from race to race,” recalls motor-sport mad Jason, who got hooked on racing himself after competing for the first time in a short rally sprint three years ago. Jason, who shifted from the UK with his family in 2005, says he was taken by the rallying on TV and describes watching the Mk2 Escorts sliding through the forests as “awe inspiring”. “I’ve had a soft spot for Mk2 Escorts ever since.” This weekend Jason will compete in his first full rally in his freshly repainted Mk2 Escort. when he was seriously ill with cancer and swore he would do all the things he wanted to if he recovered. “A chance meeting with Danny James from Ideal Garages, ended up with me going for a ride in his Mk2 Escort rally car. That was it – I knew I had to have a go myself.” These days the passionate photographer is just as likely to be seen at a rally behind the lens as behind the wheel, falling into motorsport photography when his car broke down and he couldn’t compete in an event. “So I went along to support mates and took the camera. Combining my love of motorsport and photography just happened.” He started his blog (www.alittlebitsideways. co.nz) for friends to follow his rallying, but it soon attracted interest from as far as Christchurch, prompting

Jason to use it to support club sport rallying in the hope it will attract sponsorship for upcoming drivers. “I now go along to as many events as I can, taking images and writing about my day out with the camera.” Jason is aiming to make it the top rallying website within New Zealand, but even without the website he would still be watching the cars fly by. “The cars look so cool, and the speed and the noise. Winter escape anyone? Mitsubishi ASX Diesel 4WD

Disclaimer: Here’s the deal – I am a young, female driver with little/no working knowledge of cars, how they operate and why they’re amazing. At 15 years old, my dad enrolled me in professional driving lessons after I hid my eyes from a dead bird on the road during an early lesson with him. Eight years later – not much has changed, other than the fact I am eight years older. So when asked to review the Mitsubishi ASX, I decided to play to my strengths. What follows is the debut attempt of this stereotypical blonde driver to write a technical and professional car review. Wish me luck...

As I walk into Bay City Mitsubishi to pick up the ASX for my debut Bay Driver car review, memories of my first ever driving lesson come rushing back – and I get nervous. It’s silly really, just because the first time I drove a sleek and stylish vehicle like this one I crashed it into a fence (again, sorry Mum), doesn’t mean it’s going to happen this time around – right? Nevertheless, in a bid to calm my nerves, and bond with the silver model making eyes at me across the car yard, I go for my default driving habit: ‘name that car’. So readers – meet Bessie. Don’t let the name fool you, Bessie is a smooth, sporty and snazzy beast. Immediately upon meeting her I think ‘Yes, you are one good-looking car’. Priced at $41,990 for the entry-point vehicle, the ASX diesel model is the least expensive of all Japanese and European turbo diesel 4x4 automatic soft roaders (makes those long drives to the snow more affordable). While at the car yard, Aaron from Bay City Mitsubishi shows me some of her immediate features – including my favourite: keyless entry. Forget cluttering around with a chain full of keys, I simply hop in, push down on the brake, press the start button, and on she goes. Effortless! Straight away I notice the stylish interior. My own car, old Sue the Subaru, looks embarrassingly shabby in comparison. But beyond the slick black interior, is an immediate sense of comfort – luxury even. All ASX models feature ergonomically

designed seats with hard-wearing fabric throughout. Throw in the seat warmers and I’m practically sold already. It’s Friday night and I have a dinner planned with friends, so I offer to drive (subtle opportunity to show off my new ride). Turning onto the harbour bridge, I imagine the envious stares from passing motorists who long to be driving a car this cool (it’s dark so I can’t see their glares, but I know they’re there). On the dashboard, high-contrast meters give me clear and instant feedback, and everything else I could possibly need is within easy reach from the driver’s seat. This includes a 6.1 inch touch-screen, which puts Bessie’s audio controls at my fingertips. It also becomes a reversing camera, which at first I didn’t trust to correctly show me everything, but with time and practice, is an awesome feature. Mum, if we’d had one of these in your car, I would definitely have seen that fence… I pick up my friends (yep – envious stares again) and chat to them about Bessie’s cosiness and design. I’m told the back seat is incredibly comfortable and roomy and that, as I knew, she is a ‘very good looking’ vehicle. Bessie zips effortlessly around town, and as hazards have a habit of popping out (especially in Downtown Mount) ABS brakes let me brake hard, while steering clear. The super wide, high intensity Discharge headlamps spray light over a wide area, making driving at night a breeze. Fast forward to Saturday morning and I take Bessie out for a spin on faster roads. Coming from a 2000 Subaru with less juice than a mobility scooter, this is one powerful car. All it takes is a light press on the accelerator and she’s off, so cool! ASX stats tell me 4WD models like Bessie take advantage of a 2.2L Intercooled Turbo Diesel with an economical 5.8 L/100Km (big bonus). In the 4WD diesel models the six speed automatic makes the most of the engine’s torque by matching the gears perfectly to gain the best performance. A little gibberish for me – but it’s true! I can negotiate between 60km, 80km, and 100km roads with total ease.

Driving sluggish Sue often makes me responsible for holding up a line of traffic, but not today folks! As well as the superb handling on-road, ASX Diesel 4WD models walk the walk off-road too. On the dashboard, the On Demand All Wheel Drive button lets me change driving modes, even while on the move. Bessie is an in-control speed machine – she’d be perfect for a cross-country road trip, ready to take me from the city to the ski slopes. There’s plenty of room for gear in the back, and a maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating completes what I think is a superb package! So there you have it, I’m admittedly relived to be handing Bessie back unharmed, but sad to see her go. What a magnificent creation she is! The family that races together Melissa Hartigan and father Tony check her kart before a race.

Brought up in the pits, speedway enthusiast Tony Hartigan’s three children are following in their father’s tracks, lapping up his love of motorsport. “They were at speedway when they were in a cot,” recalls Tony, who developed his passion for speedway racing at the old Baypark. “I’ve been in speedway all my life – my brother and I had saloon cars and raced there for four or five years,” says Tony, who now gets satisfaction out of helping his children. Tony returned his attention to the track nine years ago when his son Daniel began racing mini-stocks aged 12. Four years later, Daniel and sister Natasha turned their attention to racing in “fullblooded” stock cars for two years. “It was great fun but it gets pretty expensive,” says Tony. “We were getting beaten up and it was costing $1000 a week.” Next, Tony raced mini sprint cars

alongside Daniel for the next two seasons, during which time Daniel claimed third place on the national circuit, and Tony made the decision to retire. “I got out because they were racing me too fast. I just couldn’t compete. I had a big crash and never really got my confidence back.” With 21-year-old Daniel now based in Perth, where he will soon begin racing in the six-shooter mini sprint class, Tony is pouring his focus into kart racing with his daughters Melissa, 20, and Natasha, 23. Earlier this month the family headed to Tokoroa for the last round of the Top Half series, with hopes Melissa would finish her first season respectably midfield. Both Melissa and her cousin Hayley have been competing in the 125cc Rotax Light class, while Natasha, who has been racing at club level, will compete in the Top Half series next season. Fast practice times the day before the final round had Melissa excited about her chances, and she was happy with how things were going mid-way through the second heat.

“I had a great start and the last lap signal showed I managed to get into fourth place as I went around the hairpin, then crunch boom – my motor had seized. “It was so unfortunate to happen at this time. That was the end of racing for me for the series.” Overall, Melissa is happy with her performance – coming 10th place in the series out of 26, despite missing three heats and one final. Her cousin Hayley had a better day, finishing ninth and eighth overall for the season. This weekend Melissa is one of 12 special guests to race at the CRC Speedshow motoring event at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds, where she hopes to battle it out with motorsport stars Greg Murphy, Paul Radisich and Craig Baird in the Celebrity Charity Kart Challenge. “It’s pretty exciting so I’m looking By Hamish Carter forward to that.”

In the driving seat Upcoming Mount Maunganui rally driver Dave Holder has thrown down the gauntlet to his competitors after achieving second place out of nine top young drivers at the 2013 Elite Motorsport Academy. Dave says getting second place from the rising New Zealand drivers at the week-long high performance training topped off a “fantastic couple of weeks” for the Holder team, following their third placing at Manawatu’s Rally Daybreaker. First place overall at the motorsport academy was claimed by Formula Ford race champion James Munro, from Christchurch, while Dave was the highest ranked rally driver, and Auckland karter CJ Sinclair was third. Dave described it as a highly motivating experience, saying the week was jam-packed with learning opportunities and many high intensity physical and mental challenges. “We had access to the best of the best when it comes to athlete coaching and development. Many of the staff we worked with over the course of the week regularly train some of New Zealand’s top Olympic athletes.” Dave thanks the Elite Motorsport Academy Trust for the “amazing opportunity”, saying it was definitely a life experience he won’t forget. The programme, being followed with a year’s support, aims to help drivers achieve their best performance by covering subjects from nutrition and psychology to a fitness programme and learning to monitor their heart rate while driving a simulator. Dave says his success at the academy, and with codriver Josh Thoebald at the Daybreaker rally, has the pair excited about the Rally of Canterbury on August 11. The Daybreaker was the pair’s first full event together after crashing out of the Whangarei rally. “It was a promising result for Josh and I, considering it was our first full event together, we didn’t take long to work well as a team. The pace we showed is also very encouraging, and gives us a solid foundation to build on.” By Hamish Carter
