Weekend Wheels January 12 and 13: D1NZ Round 1 - The Summer Smoke Out, Trustpower Baypark Stadium

The D1NZ National Drifting Championship 2019 season is starting with a bang, the NZ Summer Smoke Out is being held during peak holiday season in beautiful Mt Maunganui. Round one will be at Baypark Stadium on 12-13 January 2019, featuring the Pyro Company Fireworks Extravaganza.

Check out New Zealand's best drifters battling it out in the stadium, sliding along the concrete walls and turning tyres into smoke, this is one of the best events of the season and showcases just how far the sport of drifting has come. Qualifying races are on January 12 from 3pm and competition day is January 13 from 3pm. Gates open both days 10:00am.

The Fireworks display is at the completion of competition proceedings on January 12 from about 9.30pm.

January 26: Burger King Super Saloon Championship, Trustpower Baypark Stadium

Baypark hosts it's second visit of the season for the Burger King Super Saloon Series. Classes racing are: Sprint Cars, Super Saloons, Stock Cars, Mini Stocks and Golden Oldie Stock Cars. Public Gates open at 5.00pm, racing starts at 6.30pm and concludes at 10.00pm. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $10 for seniors with a Gold Card, $10 for children aged five-15, and under-fives attend free. Family tickets for two adults and three children aged five-15 costs $60.

When a man can move a mountain

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Seemingly, Sir Ed had to have an entire support crew, clothing for chilly weather and something called a Sherpa to conquer Everest.

Me? I just hopped in, pressed the start button and Everest was conquered. The luxury interior of Ford’s Everest was immediately apparent, so I put the coat and the ski boots in the back and pressed on.

Ford’s 2019 Everest is a beast of a vehicle.

You can see why they named it after the Himalayan mountain, and even though it’s a brute, it feels anything but.

Sizing it up

Sure you can tell you’re driving a large SUV, but its handling and manoeuvrability defy its size. Being taller than it is wide, its agility means the act of parking is not an issue.

That’s always my main concern when trying out a big ‘ole SUV, but with those fears put to bed, unleashing the beast was at the top of my list.

Cruising on the highway or driving around town, the 2-litre bi-turbo diesel engine gave illusions of being a much bigger engine. Power and torque are there to spare, with 157kw and 500Nm of torque at your foot - figures that match much larger engines.

You get all the power of something big, with all the fuel economy of a hatchback. The engine merely sips at its fuel tank, using just 7.1l/100km on average.

All that power and torque is tamed perfectly by the 10 – yes, 10 – speed automatic transmission.

Leather luxury

Inside you are surrounded by the luxury of leather and gadgetry to rival any of its competitors. Comfort abounds, with a smooth ride, extremely comfortable seats and a great driving position.

The fit and finish is of a very high standard, with soft supple leather on the steering wheel and gear shifter, a leather-topped dashboard and comfy, drive as far as you like seats. Even the two seats in the back of this seven-seater are generous in their proportions.

The eight-inch centre screen offers up everything from the modern world, with Apple Carplay and Android Auto at your fingertips, satellite navigation and a premium 10-speaker audio system.

Bluetooth phone pairing is a breeze to configure, and the other options and settings could be easily operated by a technophobe with a smile on their dial.

Make no mistake though, Ford’s Everest is a serious offroader. There’s 225mm ground clearance, elevated air intake, as many terrain modes as you can poke a stick at and the torque to turn Mount Everest into a scenic drive.

All terrains

The terrain management system can adjust the cars’ performance depending on what you’re travelling over, and covers anything from normal road conditions, loose gravel and country roads to climbing a muddy hill.

The Everest also inspires confidence by its very feel.

Yes, it is refined and a luxury SUV, but it feels absolutely solid, rugged and ready for anything. I don’t know how Ford managed it, but they’ve certainly found a perfect balance between refinement and ability.

The Ford Everest also comes packed with safety features, such as autonomous braking and a driver alert system, warning you of impending doom. Lane keep assist and collision mitigation, distance alert (from the car in front) and speed sign recognition all combine to produce a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

I know what you’re thinking. This sounds like a lot of money. For sure, the 2019 Ford Everest doesn’t come for pocket change, but when you consider just what you’re getting, the starting price of $87,990 + ORC is practically a giveaway when compared to anything else that offers this much in this category.

On top of that, you also get a five-year unlimited KM warranty. Not many manufacturers back themselves with unlimited KM warranties, so Ford must know they’ve built a machine to last.

Tauranga local to compete in drifting competition Tauranga local Dave Steedman has been competing in D1NZ under Team DSR for many years and has been confirmed for another season ahead, where he'll be delivering solid results for sure.

Dave grew up on a farm and (like many of the D1NZ drivers) learned to drive on the gravel - a great way to learn car control.

"As soon as he saw what drifting was he knew it was something he wanted to give a go - competing came as a natural progression," says a post on the D1NZ website.

Once Dave hit the drift circuit for the first time there was no turning back - the noise, the speed, the smoke, the aggression - it's pure goodness in his eyes.

"Dave's best achievement so far was a first place podium in the Pro-class of D1NZ Manfeild in 2017 and he knows he's got a few more due with the consistency he brings, and follows it up with a top sportsmanship ethic.

"Look out for Team DSR in 2019; they're bringing the noise with the two-car team, having been non-stop this off season upgrading all facets of the cars and they warn they're coming to knock on doors!"

This is round one of the National Drifting Championship, starting the 2019 season in the beautiful Mount Maunganui which is always a favourite for the drivers and fan alike. The event will run all day Saturday from 10am until around 6pm, and all day Sunday from 10am to 8.30pm.

Kiwi’s reveal popular car names

The next time you’re stuck in traffic, the chances are you will be close to a Betty – the most popular name given to cars by their owners.

A nationwide survey, conducted by Gasoline Alley Services to find out what people call their cars and why, discovered that Betty and Betsy were the most popular.

The names match a similar trend overseas, with Betty also most popular among US and UK drivers.

Kermit was second, with Bob and various names involving the world ‘little’ also recurring in the survey.

“We didn’t realise Betty was going to be so popular,” says Kylie Baudet, head of marketing at GAS. “People quite often form a strong bond with their car, so we wanted to see if there were common names and what the reasons were behind them.” In total, 432 New Zealanders took part in the survey. Results

show that 79 per cent of those who named their car were female, with those aged 18-44 most likely to give their car a name.

When asked about the inspiration behind the name of their car, 42 per cent cited the appearance as the main reason, with the number plate also proving a source of creativity.

“We received so many funny stories as to how people created their names and what they call their car,” says Kylie. “Not all of them were family friendly.

“It’s certainly given us lots of laughs, and even some tears to read the stories.”

Other noteworthy names to appear were Mazdarati, Stella McCARtney, Hondaway to the scrap yard and Lancer Armstrong.

When asked what gender they thought of their cars as, 61 per cent of responders say female, with 25 per cent saying male and the rest stating neither. Japanese cars also dominated the survey, with a handful of German marques also appearing.
