Weekend Wheels November 17: Demolition Derby, Baypark Family Speedway, Mount Maunganui

Always a great night of racing entertainment, this event includes the Demolition Derby and a stock car team race between the Baypark Bulldogs and the Gisborne Gladiators. Also racing are super saloons, saloons and stock cars. Gates open at 5pm, with racing starting at 6.30pm. November 18: All USA Day Car Show, Mount Maunganui

The Bay of Plenty Mustang Owners Club is holding its annual All USA Day Car Show at Classic Flyers on Jean Batten Drive, Mount Maunganui on Sunday, November 18. All cars of US origin are welcome with trophies awarded for best Ford, Chev, Mopar, Mustang, hot rod, vintage, sports and more. There’ll be amazing cars, good food, trade stalls and rock n’ roll dancers between 11am-1pm. Cars from 8am, public from 10am and prizegiving at 2pm. Entry is $5 per person or $10 family. Gate entry prize includes a Boeing Stearman WWII biplane scenic flight, donated by Classic Flyers.

December 1: North Island Saloon Car Championship, Mount Maunganui

Baypark Family Speedway’s first championship event for the season is the North Island Saloon Car Championship. The mighty super stock cars will also take to the track for the first time. Other classes racing include super saloons, stock cars and mini stocks. Gates open at 5pm with racing starting at 6.30pm. Adults $25, seniors and children aged 5-15 years $10, family (two adults and three children) $60, and children under five attend free.

December 2: Hot rod & classic car breakfast, Tauranga

Oilers Hot Rod Club is hosting a hot rod and classic car breakfast at The Mill House at Tauranga Crossing from 9-11am on December 2.

Car owners have a dedicated parking area and it is planned to add a post-breakfast cruise to the event in future. The hot rod and classic car breakfast is held on the first Sunday of every month. Honda’s CR-V of the future Honda is ahead of the curve, and has invented the first ever hover car. Either that, or it magically re-lays the road in front of you, and puts it back to normal behind you.

Honda’s CR-V should have been called ‘Serenity’, not after a dodgy space ship, but because it’s the most serene SUV I’ve driven to date, simply gliding along the road.

Long gone are the days when the CR-V was just a mumsie wagon, for throwing the kids out the door at school or taking them to sports fixtures.

This is a grown-up, full-fat-with-allthe-trimmings SUV. The 2018 range of CR-Vs offers anything to everyone. Five or seven seats, an all-new turbo-charged VTEC engine across the range, 18-inch alloys, Bluetooth phone connectivity, satnav, reverse camera, lane watch camera and many more safety features.

Like safety?

Consider this little lot, available in the AWD Sport Sensing model: Road Departure Mitigation and Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Auto High-Beam Support and the new Driver Attention Monitor, added to Honda’s Collision Mitigation Braking with Forward Collision Warning and pedestrian sensing capability, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist and LaneWatch Camera System.

Yes, not only is it a hover car, it can practically drive for you too!

The 2018 CR-V is easily the bestlooking model to date – the familiar front end of the Honda family, and the daring, modern lines of the back. A beautifully-appointed interior, with a nod to its heritage with ample storage trays and convenient cubbies all over.

Touch technology

The large and easy-to-use centre screen offers a wealth of modern auto extras. Apple Car Play, Android Auto and a Garmin Navigation App. With a suitably-connected device, you can also issue voice commands to send text

messages, find locations or even check the weather.

There’s a plethora of cameras for reversing, lane-watching, and an especially useful camera when turning left, which augments the left hand mirror.

Great for spotting those lycra-clad road warriors.

The CR-V is available in three flavours: the two or all-wheel drive Touring, the two-wheel-drive Sport 7 and the all-wheel-drive Sport Sensing.

All come with the 1.5L turbo-charged VTEC engine, producing 140kW and 240Nm of torque, and the inspirationally named ‘EarthDreams’ direct injection technology. For a relatively small engine for the size of the vehicle, it performs exceptionally well.

A dream

As if hovering and gadgetry wasn’t enough, that chipper little engine is coupled to Honda’s also named ‘EarthDreams’ automatic transmission.

This can be optioned with either the G Design Shift, or the seven-speed with paddle shifters in the two sport models.

That little powerhouse, coupled with its transmission, runs to just 7.4L/100km average fuel consumption (combined cycle). That’s very impressive for a mid-sized SUV. You can fine-tune your CR-V with one of seven colours, from the White Orchard Pearl to Brilliant Sporty Blue Metallic.

Pricing starts at $37,990 for the 2WD Touring, up to $48,990 for the AWD Sport Sensing. If your budget can stretch to it, the amount of additional features on the Sport Sensing model is well worth the additional cost.

If it helps with the decision, Honda is currently offering just 1.9 per cent finance on its small and medium-sized SUV range, with just 20 per cent deposit and a maximum 36-month repayment term. What you would save in interest will go a long way to that difference in price.

If that wasn’t enough, it also comes with a five-year unlimited kilometres warranty. A true testament to the reliability that is inherent with Honda.

That’s full vehicle cover, full parts and labour cover, and unlimited kilometres.

Try to find that anywhere else!

You also benefit from five years roadside assistance cover too. Given how reliable Hondas are – and that’s backed with the five-year warranty – I can only assume by roadside assistance they mean someone will come and help you clean up if you spill your coffee while parked for a break.

Otherwise, it must be a very boring job for someone!

Drive to believe

There’s so much to like about the CR-V that the only real option is to drive it for yourself. When you compare what else you can get for the kind of price tag on these Hondas – the 1.9 per cent finance offer, the exceptional warranty and the beautiful drive the CR-V offers – there’s really no comparison.

Coombes Johnston Tauranga appoints new general manager

Kevin Pead joins Coombes Johnston Tauranga as the new general manager.

Coombes Johnston BMW Group has recently appointed Kevin Pead as general manager of its Tauranga dealership.

Kevin, originally from South Africa, has lived in New Zealand for six years. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the automotive industry, including management, sales and customer satisfaction positions with BMW and in the premium vehicle market.

Kevin relocated for the role with his wife and daughter and says he is “so grateful” for the opportunity to work and live in one of New Zealand’s most progressive and picturesque regions.

He heads up a loyal and experienced team of 13 staff and will be building greater focus on boosting customer experience and demonstrating “the level of respect and service customers deserve”.

Police reminder for commercial drivers Bay of Plenty Police are reminding drivers of heavy motor vehicles to make sure their vehicles are safe, and that drivers themselves are safe, as the end of the year approaches.

Acting Inspector Lex Soepnel, acting manager for the Police commercial vehicle safety team, says police will soon be stepping up vehicle inspections and checkpoints.

“We want people to make sure their vehicle is safe and up to standard before they set off.

We also want to remind drivers to make sure they are well-rested and take regular breaks.”

Lex says people naturally feel background weariness with the end of the year approaching so it’s even more important to make sure they are getting enough sleep between shifts.

“It’s important for any driver to be alert

and focused when they are driving. Mistakes can happen, so it’s important drivers are focused on the task at hand.”

Police are reminding drivers to wear a seatbelt, don’t drive impaired by fatigue, drugs, or alcohol; don’t drive distracted – such as texting on your phone – and don’t drive too fast for the conditions or over the speed limit.

“We focus on these behaviours for a reason. We know they are the four main contributors to death and injury on our roads,” says Lex. “Everybody deserves to get where they’re going safely and the decisions you make as a driver impact on everybody else on the road.

“So let’s all commit to being sensible and careful on our roads. Road safety is up to every single one of us.”
