Kia hops on Waikato/BOP Magic bandwagon It’s amazing what winning can do. Kia will switch sports codes in New Zealand next year after signing up as the naming sponsor for the Waikato/BOP magic netball team. The ANZ Championship-winning team will now be known as the Kia Magic for the next three years. Kia Motors has previously supported the ASB Women’s Classic, Heineken Men’s Open and New Zealand Winter Games, but has reassessed its sponsorship involvements in New Zealand. Mini love

From Clubmans to Coopers Dangled the carrot of watching formula one driver Bruce McLaren racing live at Pukekohe in 1963, Donn White believes he must have been “the best behaved kid around for months”. While the behaviour may not have always stuck, his passion for Minis certainly has after seeing the legendary Kiwi driver seemingly perform miracles in the car. “It was that it could out handle the bigger cars - down the straights the bigger cars like the Jags blew the Mini away, but at the corners it was just unbelievable, especially at the hands of an expert driver like Bruce McLaren. “It made the race very exciting – at every corner he would pass more cars, then they would pass him on the straights. I thought when I get older I want to do something like that.” Inspired by the Mini’s nimble footwork, Donn set himself a goal of saving hard so he could buy his own and was soon working as much as he could in his part-time job at Tirau’s ‘Atlantic Service Station’, earning ‘two and six’ an hour. “It took years and years – but by the time I left school I was in the position to purchase my Mum’s first car.” At 17 he bought his Mum’s Mini for $1050 – a $50 discount on what the Putaruru dealers were offering as a trade-in. “Then when I took delivery of the car I did what every young fella did – I modified it and started racing.”

Donn raced at various club events in Hamilton including doing circuit club events and hill climbs, but was soon lusting after a Mini Cooper 1275cc, finding no matter what modifications he made his 850cc model could not keep up. “So after a year or so I moved up the ranks to bigger and faster Minis,” beginning what has become a series of changing Minis, along with rebuilds and modifications that has continued to today, including a new Mini Clubman GT he bought in 1973 that was purpose built to race at Bathurst. “It was unbelievable – back in the day it was a very special car that had fantastic performance – I had a lot of fun with that and sold it after a season.” In 1990 – prompted by growing interest in restoring classic cars – Donn tracked down the GT’s owner and bought the dilapidated car back to restore with the help of Katikati’s Roger Payne. “It was in a hang of a state – it had been thru 17 owners – everyone had taken off the racing componentry, it was really just an old bomb Mini.” It has since then raced in classic events and Targa rallies, with a series of success including winning the Pomeroy Trophy at Manfield’s vintage car club event earlier this year.

The GT is one of four Minis he owns, all of which he has restored after bringing them into his “garage on the end of a tow rope”. Donn is president of the Tauranga Mini Owners Club.

Bell Tea or PG Tips? Colgate or McLeans? Weet Bix or Corn Flakes? Ask anyone why they prefer one brand over another and they will usually come up with some rationalisation to justify a habit. Dig deep enough and you will probably find their habitual preference (or opposition) was formed around an early experience which prompted them to adopt the brand as theirs. Get behind the wheel of Hyundai’s latest (third generation) Santa Fe and you will soon understand how the Korean Auto giant is breaking old habits. Forget about the distant memories you may still have of those first Hyundai’s released onto New Zealand’s roads 28 years ago. They were the poor man’s alternative to the successful Japanese brands available and a poor imitation at that. In almost 30 years a lot can happen and a lot has certainly happened with Hyundai. Thousands of Kiwis have been waking up to the fact the Korean automaker is well and truly up with the best of them. It’s the reason why last year Hyundai was New Zealand’s fastest growing car brand for the second year running – growing sales by 27 per cent over the previous year. High-end model Santa Fe is playing a major part in this growth story with the car’s street smart lines, power and adaptability combining to make the ideal family lifestyle

vehicle. The boys at Farmer Hyundai invited me in to try out the 2012 Santa Fe to help set me straight. Seeing the car up close in its smart gleaming black, it made me think of Remuera tractors and the Russian mafia. I imagined it careening down the road, the front seat passenger letting off a hail of bullets at a chasing car, or mum lining up at the front school gate waiting for the rampaging children to run all over the back seats with bags and lunch boxes flying. “That’s one versatile car,” I mutter under my breath as sales consultant Mark Roy passes me the keys. But of course there is no ‘key’, but instead a push button ignition that only activates when you have the key pendant sensor within the required range. The highly ‘spec’ed out’ Santa Fe 2.2R CRDi Elite Limited A6 7S bursts into life and I’m out of the yard and off to enjoy the rest of my weekend and discover just how versatile it is. First impressions confirm it has lots of power and that deceptive sense that you are not going that fast at all (until you check the speedo again!) with plenty of space and comfort. Heading beyond the city limits it goes like the clappers, with no significant loss of power when hitting an incline (I still use the manual override to the automatic gears to take complete control of the driving experience and impressed. This feels like a true manual rather than an engineered compromise.

Arriving home, the children are desperate for a drive. For once the whole family can all fit in the review car, thanks to the fold-down dicky seats in the generous boot (969 litres) that quickly convert the Santa Fe to a comfortable seven-seater (available in some models). The ease of folding out the extra seats or the middle seats for a super-sized boot get the wife’s thumbs up. The generous space and attention to detail continues throughout. Special mention is worthy of the leather upholstery which adds a touch of luxury (and practicality with grubby fingers) in the Elite models, a cool box between front seats for keeping drinks and treats, a nifty sunglasses nook by the overhead mirror and handy CD storage by the audio entertainment unit. The Santa Fe is available in six models – including three diesel powered 2.2 models, and petrol-powered 2.4 and 3.5 V6 models. We test drove a diesel-powered model, which drive smoothly without the classic annoying diesel vibration. In keeping with Hyundai’s strong safety focus the Santa Fe’s comprehensive safety features –including front and side airbags in the front seats, active headrests, three-point lap diagonal seatbelts and electronic stability programme – has earned it a five

star safety rating (ANCAP Tests). My only disappointment was the lack of GPS or inbuilt map system for the display screen (in my model) – it’s a feature I’d expect for the price tag. Aside from this minor grizzle I came away with a renewed appreciation for the Santa Fe and the Hyundai brand as a whole. In fact, I will be adding the family-friendly seven-seater to my Christmas wish list. By Hamish Carter

It is time for all car-lovers to fly the Star Spangled Banner and get into the spirit of Detroit. On Sunday the annual All USA Car Day will be held for the 10th time – with hopes that it will attract 250 US-made cars of all shapes, styles and ages from around the North Island. Bay of Plenty Mustang Owners Club president Grant Robb never knows how many or what sort of vehicles will take part – saying it always comes down to the weather. Grant says the annual show at Wharepai Domain attracts a lot of cars because of the wide range of competition categories which give car-owners a greater chance of winning, with prizes given to the top three in each of nine categories. “There are not too many events that cover the range like this. Otherwise, unless your car is among the best of the best, you don’t

have much chance.” Categories include vintage; pre’60s; classic ’60s; classic ‘70s; classic late (‘80s on); muscle cars; sports cars; modifieds and commercials. “It’s open to any car of American origin and in the past we’ve had all sorts from very early vintage cars to hot rods.” Grant is expecting a contingent of 30 Corvettes from Auckland. Some of the money raised by the Mustang Club will be donated to a charity. Last week $920 from last year’s event was donated to Tauranga RDA which promises to put it towards buying another horse (to be suitably called either Mustang or Mustang Sally). Gates open for car owners to register and set up from 8am, before the show opens to the public from 10am-2pm. If it rains the event will be held at the Spring St carpark. New car sales on the rise

New vehicle sales continue to improve, with the combined passenger and commercial markets reaching the second-highest number of sales for the year. Motor Trade Association representatives say the total of new vehicles sold increased for the second month in a row, with 9388 new units sold overall – up 698 (eight per cent) on the September figure. This equates to an increase of 34 per cent on the 7026 new vehicles sold in October 2011. Year to date, total new vehicle sales are up 19 per cent, which MTA spokesman Ian Stronach says is a strong sign for the economy. “October is often a strong month sales wise, with many of the new season’s rental fleet being included. Toyota, in particular, had a strong month, leading both the commercial and passenger sales figures.” New car sales of 7336 units increased by 699 units (11 per cent), compared to the same month last year. New Forester is on its way The all-new Subaru Forester will arrive in New Zealand in early-2013 after making its debut in Japan this week.

Depending on markets worldwide, the 2013 Forester is available with two litre petrol naturally aspirated (109 kWs and 196 Nm) and turbocharged (176 kWs and 350 Nm) four cylinder “Boxer” engines, or the 2.5 litre petrol motor (126 kWs and 230 Nm) and a two litre diesel (110 kWs and 350 Nm) It will sit on a choice of 17 or 18 inch alloy wheels, depending on the model. Western Bay of Plenty rallying fans had a rare rallying treat this week when the week-long Silver Fern rally passed through the area for the first time in the marathon multi-stage eventâ€™s eight year history. Among those racing for glory were Pyes Pa rally driver Andrew Shrimpton who despite breaking his Mark II Escortâ€™s driveshaft on the first day, was back for day two after replacing it.
