Weekend Wheels 2016 – Elite MotorSport Academy

Applications for the 2016 Elite MotorSport Academy are now open and close on March 18, 2016. The successful applicants will attend the Elite Academy camp in Dunedin, scheduled for the week of July 3 to 10, 2016. The camp will provide a one-week intensive “in camp programme of physical and educational training assistance package to up to nine MotorSport New Zealand recognised race or rally competitors who have already demonstrated the ability to excel in their chosen motorsport discipline”. January 30 – ENZED 2016 UIM Jetsprint World Championship Final

After captivating near sell-out crowds for the past two years, the jetsprint boats are set to power their way into Mt Maunganui’s Baypark Stadium again this month, bringing a whole new level of hi-octane, international motor racing action. Up to 60 high-powered boats, top teams and drivers from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand will battle it out for world titles across three classes: Suzuki Unlimited Superboats, Altherm Group A, Biolytix Group B (400s).

February 13 – Baypark Family Speedway Burger King Super Saloon Series

Fast, fine and fit Holden’s latest champion

On the wettest, wildest and windiest January days, we were set to test drive the finest, fastest and fittest Commodore in 36 years.

With the weather so rubbish any race marshal in their right mind would have called for a postponement, but seeing the scores of kids putting on a brave face for their triathlon we thought we should probably do the same – after all if the little kids can race, so can the big kids. It’s off to put the new SS-V through its paces.

For those who drive their vehicles rather than commute in them, a traditional V8 is still an enticing prospect. If you were raised on the Holden vs Ford rivalry, the new VF Series II SS-V Redline is the perfect excuse to wave the red flag.

Waving the red flag is something Phillip Rutten of Vibrant Homes Mt Maunganui, this week’s Bay Driver, has been doing since he was old enough to drive. Waiting to get behind the wheel Phil shared a nostalgic memory of the day he bought his first Holden, a gold Premier sedan.

“Things certainly have come a long way

since then,” Phil chuckled.

“Beautiful body lines consistent inside and out with a vibrant colour.” (Ours was supplied in Jungle Green, only available on sports models.)

“The heads-up display above the steering wheel gives a futuristic feel and when you’re on a fast run you don’t have to take your eyes off the road.”

Monster engine

Julian Clements, dealer principal for Ebbett Holden, says the SS V-Series Redline is the quickest production Commodore ever built. He told Bay Driver that Holden have added a monster 6.2-litre V8 engine to the sporty SS V-Series Redline.

“It’s this change that may well have resulted in the finest, fastest, fittest Commodore in 36 years,” Julian said.

Despite the conditions, this vehicle did not disappoint. While Holden claims a 0-100km/hr time of 4.9 seconds, this was a claim we were unwilling to prove in such miserable conditions, deciding instead to take them at their word on this.

also feels smaller under your right foot, with the shorter final drive ratio sharpening the throttle response notably.

Loud and proud

The roar appeal of a big capacity V8 – the most powerful engine fitted to a regular Commodore – is now supported by suspension that can manage the torque. The revised rear end has a new sway bar to cut body roll, letting the engineers soften off the springs.

The changes mean the grunt now goes to the ground rather than converting rear wheel rubber to smoke as you exit the corner under hard acceleration. It is a vastly improved car when pressed hard. Brembo brakes all round and a new bi-modal exhaust system gives the Holden bark to match its 6.2L bite. One critical feature of the bi-modal exhaust is a new piece of technology known as the Baillie Tip, a unique opening in the exhaust that reverberates sound back through the system towards the cabin. The tip was developed by and named after Holden engineer, Dr David Baillie, who died last year of leukemia.

The Baillie Tip alone accounts for an extra three decibels of cabin volume, while overall the various measures increase interior sound level by 10 dBA – or double the old car.

The bi-modal exhaust activates based on a combination of throttle pedal position, revs and gear selection. The Baillie Tip is a very smart but simple piece of engineering that contributes to the overall vehicle beautifully and best of all is switchable via the infotainment screen’s menu system.

Open it all up, and the Commodore SS-V Redline will give a Jaguar F-Type a run for its money in the “I can shout louder than you can” exhaust noise stakes.

That said, it’s never laddish or uncouth at

part-throttle and the Commodore will cruise for long stints in relative silence – not bad for a muscle bound Aussie.

The VFII sports models are the only V8s to get vents on the upper bonnet to expel heat, a lower grille size slightly enlarged to allow more cooling air and new fascia inlets to cool the brakes and negate the extra drag created by the larger opening. All this is really designed for the SSV Redline flagship performance model which Holden wanted to ensure was track capable.

That’s why the Calais and Caprice V8s don’t get more air flow or the vents. It’s also why the Redline remains the only model to have Brembo brakes, which now include four-piston rear calipers as well as the fronts.

The Redline adds 19-inch rims and a different suspension tune – and it’s a blast when you’re pushing on a bit. The Redline is eager to rev and makes its power and torque from low in the rev range.

The engine’s flexibility means you don’t need to change gears as often, but the exhaust note means that you do.

Benchmark

Holden has set a new benchmark in fourdoor sports sedans. It feels like it’s made for New Zealand, at a price that says they still understand Kiwi family budgets.

Nowhere else can you get the combination of raw muscle, interior size, terrific interior and all-round ability that the Commodore sports variants provide for the asking price.

For our money, the SS V is the sweet spot – and you won’t short-change yourself by selecting the manual. The shift action is solid and precise, while the clutch is easy and user-friendly in traffic. The auto is nice too, especially with the addition of shift paddles.

Taste of success for Tauranga rider Tauranga’s Robbie Shorter and his Auckland sidecar partner Colin Buckley have had a good start to their New Zealand Superbike Championship season with win in Ruapuna at the weekend.

The pair, riding their LRC Kawasaki, were one of a number of class winners at Christchurch’s Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna at the weekend.

It also included a perfect start to the 2016 New Zealand Superbike Championships season for Wellington’s Sloan Frost.

Fresh from winning the Formula One class in the three-round pre-national Suzuki Series, which wrapped up on the streets of Whanganui on Boxing Day, Sloan managed to kick on from that career breakthrough performance to dominate racing in the premier class.

Sloan (MC2 Racing Fujitsu TSS Red Baron Suzuki GSX-R1000) won three out of three superbike class races at this first round of four in the national series – the gruelling 20-lap third leg at Ruapuna also recognised as the race to decide the New Zealand Grand Prix title.

What was even more remarkable was the 34-year-old hadn’t previously won a race at the Ruapuna circuit and so to

get the “monkey off the back” in such a commanding fashion was itself worthy of celebration.

“I’ve never taken a win at Ruapuna before, so just coming here and getting such a solid result is great,” he says. “Then, to win the GP race and earn a major title is great too.”

With Sloan tasting such success at his “bogey” track of Ruapuna, it perhaps sounds a warning bell for his championship rivals.

“Now that I’ve gotten over the mountain of not having won at Ruapuna, now I can go on a build on this at the tracks coming up, ones that I have enjoyed success on in the past.”
