Getting on the fast Trax When I was first told about the Holden Trax getting a 1.4 engine, I thought: ‘That won’t work in an SUV’.

When I saw the Trax at Ebbett Holden, I thought: ‘Yep, that’s too heavy for a 1.4 engine’. When I first drove the Holden Trax, I thought: ‘Wow, how wrong am I!’ As you might have guessed, the Holden Trax now comes with a 1.4 turbo engine –and I can’t believe how well it performs.

When you look outside, the first impression of the Trax is solid. There’s a certain meatiness about it, even though it’s a smaller SUV. The front end is a wall of pure ruggedness – one might say the sturdiness of a very handsome freight train – and looks like it would stand up to driving through walls.

The same is true when you follow on through to the inside – everything feels so solid, rugged, and yet refined.

I’m not surprised this car has a five-star ANCAP safety rating, I felt very safe driving it. I can imagine if this was in a crash, it would be saying: “Ha, you should see the other bloke”.

Now you may be thinking – rugged, solid – aren’t these all just words for rough and ugly?

Nope. In the case of the Trax these definitely mean quality and well made. If you think the Trax is rough or ugly, I would have to recommend a visit to the opticians.

Out on the road, the new 1.4 LTZ Trax is a pleasure to drive. The pick-up on acceleration is surprising, the ride is smooth and quiet; and the handling and responsiveness are a delight. It’s even easy on the pocket, with an average 6.9 litres per 100km fuel usage.

Internally, the cabin feels very spacious and is very easy on the eye. The heated leather seats are very comfortable, highly adjustable and will see you right on very long journeys.

The main console is neat and crystal clear with its digital readout, and the centre console is home to Holden’s

MyLink system with 7” touch screen – the smarts of your in-car entertainment and other little toys.

The MyLink system is a breeze to use. It hooks up to a smartphone, and from there you can play your own music, make calls, even view pictures or watch movies!

Photos or movies? Sound dangerous? Don’t worry, this feature only works when the vehicle is stationary. It can also use your phone’s data connection for services, such as music streaming service Pandora, BringGo Satellite Navigation GPS and various other options. If you have a newer model iPhone, it can also talk to Siri with the ‘Eyes Free’ service. Clever wee thing!

The 1.4 engine is an option only available with the LTZ trim option – that being the highest spec.

Extras above the entry level LS model include 18” wheels, trip computer featuring average fuel consumption, average speed, distance to empty, trip time and even a compass!

You also get those lovely heated leather seats, and vanity mirrors in the sun visors – which I assume must be for the ladies, huh guys? The 1.4 model also comes with a sunroof as a standard fitting. If you want to spruce up the look of your Trax, you can also add Track Stripes, a sporty edition adding stripes on the bonnet and following up over the roof.

Tuning in to most people’s tastes, a range of colours are available. From velvet red, boracay blue – the colour of our test vehicle – and six other colours ranging from orange through to silver, white and carbon black.

Overall, the smaller sibling to the Captiva and Colorado is an impressive vehicle. With a sturdy build quality, superb ride comfort, it’s also pretty darn good looking too.

Prices start from $32,990 for the LS 1.8 Trax, or $35,490 for the LTZ 1.8, and $36,990 for the 1.4 turbo.

From pulp and paper to engines and upholstery, Trevor Lee has made a name for himself as a car salesman to trust during the last 35 years.

“A sales career was never on my radar,” says Trevor, who found himself pursuing the role when he shifted to Tauranga with his wife, who was taking up a teaching position.
