Battling against the odds Customs problems in China, preventing Tauranga drifter Cole Armstrong from racing his own car at the Tianjin World Drift Series event, was not enough to derail his goal for a top finish. In what his manager Mary Brown describes as a “confusing turn of events” Cole was told a day before the World Series round one event, that he would not be able to drive his New Zealand-built Nissan RB34 Skyline in the battle against other top international competitors. But rather than letting adversity get the better of him he organised a replacement car – the first left hand drive he had ever driven – and surprised himself, ultimately going on to take fifth place in the series opener. With the 2008 Ford Mustang super-charged Shelby GT about as far away in likeness from the RB34 as you could get, Cole had to quickly come to terms with its different power delivery as a high-torque supercharged V8. And with different suspension settings to what he was used to, it was a baptism by fire for Cole.

The late arrival of his replacement car only gave Cole three five-minute practice sessions to prepare and adjust to the Mustang before the crucial qualifying round to make the top 32 of the more than 70 drivers competing. “I didn’t really have too much on my mind apart from trying not to throw it into the wall … I had to find the limit pretty quickly.” With his focus on keeping a clean run through qualifying, Cole turned out a top score in the Mustang and qualifying the New Zealand team – which he was the sole competitor for in Tianjin – in sixth position. The same focussed approach saw Cole make it through the major battle to the top 16, before beating a top Chinese driver in front of the stadium’s passionate crowd of 20,000 supporters – to make the top eight. In an extremely tight battle with his friend and leading US driver Matt Powers – which had to be re-run when judges could not separate them – Cole was narrowly beaten to take fifth place. “Despite the week’s challenges, we think things happened for a reason this time around,” says Cole.
“I am hugely grateful to WDS organisers for letting me drive the Mustang and to everyone for their support. We can’t wait to get back for round two now, we’re quite fond of the Mustang actually – who knows, maybe we can continue to drive it throughout the rest of the 2013 series. Time will tell.” Cole, who shifted to Perth for work in March, will return to Taupo to compete in his RB34 in the final round of the D1NZ season series on June 22, before the car and team return overseas to continue with international Drift campaign at WDS and Formula Drift Asia events. Opening the driver door of the Citroen DS D Style automatic, which we took out for the test drive, revealed European luxury that is mostly un-matched in the New Zealand new car market. Leather upholstery was complemented by the leather steering wheel with understated chrome inserts. Only European flair could come up with touches of brilliance, such as the raised centre console with a large refrigerated storage compartment for keeping drinks cold on hot days. A blind spot monitoring system and dual zone air conditioning add to the European innovation. Hitting the road for the photo shoot of a picnic at Kulim Park’s petanque courts, Sideline Sid was particularly taken by the large blue fluro instrument panel with the speedometer, cruise control and fuel gauge information sitting squarely in front of the driver. Add in the steering wheel controls and everything is at one’s fingertips. Front and rear parking sensors with a parking space “gap” measurement system makes around town parking a breeze, with automatic headlights and automatic rainsensitive windscreen wipers and LED daytime running lights among other handy features. Out on road is where the Citroen DS4 shows its class. Our test drive vehicle showed a strong sense of being glued to the road, with the dynamic suspension providing a faultless ride.
Powered by a 1598cc four cylinder twin scroll turbocharger, that produces a more than handy turn of pace, it pushes the vehicle from 0 to 100 km in just nine seconds. However, economy hasn’t been compromised with an overall fuel consumption of 7.7 litre per 100 km. Standard European safety features complement the car’s performance, which include systems dedicated to braking control (electronic brake force distribution and emergency braking aid) and keeping on course (ABS and ESP). It also has intelligent traction control as a standard feature. However, what sold Sideline Sid on the Citroen DS4 was the real sense of space in a car that is compact in design. Comfortable motoring for five, is provided for both around town running or long distance trips on the open road. Backed up by extremely generous boot space the Citroen DS4 has versatility and comfort written all over it. We will leave the last word to John from Tauranga Citroen who said: “The Citroen DS4 with leather seats is a luxury car at extremely affordable price that is coupled with a real sporty touch”. At $44,990 for the cloth trim and $47,990 for the top of the range leather seat option, it represents outstanding value for money in the New Zealand new car market. Tauranga Peugeot, at 619 Cameron Rd (opposite Countdown), last month added the Citroen brand to its line-up, in what John described as a “perfect complementary fit”.

Fun-raising on wheels Paramedic to pirate
After getting a taste for motorsport from racing stock cars in his younger years, these days Tauranga paramedic Les McLaren gets his kicks behind the wheel by helping others. Les fondly recalls the excitement of racing stock cars at the Rotorua Speedway as a young man, but competing demands on his time forced him to give away stock cars after about five years – but he remained involved by regularly ‘helping out’ on the side line in his role as a paramedic. He still loves to help out at various motoring events – but what really gets him fired up these days is helping out children in need through his involvement in Variety Bash events and smaller fundraising rallies with his mates in the Charity Pirates group. Every three months the pirates group – which is made up of about 10 members driving in their ‘sponsored and wacky vehicles’ – head off on the road for a short two-day rally to raise funds for children in need. Next month, the group is heading for the Western Bay, with a rally taking them through Paeroa,

Waihi, Katikati and on to Tauranga. “The Pirates have raised $160,000-$170,000 in the 10 years since they started and it’s great to be a part of the fun.” Les is excited that the group, which is mainly made up of Aucklanders, is heading into his home territory for the first time in more than five years. With about $2000 normally raised for a project, a child or a charity on each run, Les is keen to get suggestions on a worthwhile Western Bay cause. After leaving St John’s and starting his own private medic service 10 years ago, Les began providing medical care at various events, leading to an invitation to drive along in his ambulance on the annual Variety Bash. It was an invitation he couldn’t refuse. Bash organisers had begun just by hiring his ambulance, but as someone who loves to give back to the community he was keen to get involved himself. “The fact that we raise money for disadvantaged kids it’s great to be involved “ Les and his wife Maria – a nurse – take their job of fundraising on the road very seriously and the results show it. They have been top fundraisers for six years and set a record for the most ever raised in three hours when they collected $1960 on the streets of Taumarunui. Compared to other vehicles on the bash, including many decorated fire engines, the Toyota Hi Ace ambulance appears pretty boring – but not to Les. He loves the ambulance, which – with its Lexus V8 engine – is one of its kind in New Zealand and one of only 100 made. Top value family SUV Depreciation and cars go hand in hand, but if you look closely enough you might discover an under-valued gem in the second-hand car market. That’s exactly how I would describe the 2009 Nissan X Trail TL in Tony Hammond’s yard. The pearl white 4WD is a top of the range family SUV in as-new condition, with a smart interior with black leather upholstery and trim, heated seats, a sun roof and all the mod cons. The car would look great in any driveway, but the real stand-out feature of this one-owner X-Trail is its low kilometres (only 13,800). Combined with a great service record

Holder in top motorsport class
Dave Holder’s race to the top of motorsport is back on track after being selected for the Elite Motorsport Academy in July. The Mount Maunganui driver’s rally season took a hit at the Whangarei Rally two weeks ago, where cutting a corner too closely sent the car into a roll off a cliff and meant an early exit in the second race of the season in the New Zealand Rally Championships. Dave says it is an honour to be named among the nine upcoming drivers to attend the week-long academy in Dunedin in July. He is excited about the chance to learn from the high performance sports specialists. The programme, which is includes followup support for a year, is taught by Otago University’s high performance sports academy and covers everything to help the drivers get the best performance – from nutrition and psychology to a fitness programme and monitoring heart rate while driving a simulator. “Obviously there is a lot that you can get out of it – I’m particularly interested in the
psychology and nutrition side of things, which you don’t normally focus on.” MotorSport New Zealand president Shayne Harris says the results of the programme, now in its 10th year, speak for themselves. “The Elite MotorSport Academy continues to be a tremendous success. That’s highlighted by the achievements of graduates such as Mitch Evans, who is currently competing in GP2; Hayden Paddon in the WRC and a host of young drivers who are very competitive on the international stage.” The programme is run by the MotorSport NZ Scholarship Trust in conjunction with Excellence in Sport South Island and Otago University’s sports science specialists. Others picked for the academy in the race category are: James Munro (Christchurch), Brendon Leitch (Invercargill), Callum Quin (Auckland), Rowan Shepherd (Hastings) and Ethan Colman (Hamilton). In the rally category Dave is joined by Rhys Gardner (Balclutha), while karters selected are Christopher Sinclair and Reid Harker (both Auckland).
