How to work ‘bikini’ into a headline One thing I’ve learned in life is that bikinis usually lead to trouble.

That’s why I’ve stopped wearing one. On the outside, at least. However, there are some slow learners out there. Our national airline, for one.

Air Nuzillin landed in a spot of bother with its new airline safety message, featuring ‘Sports Illustrated’ swimwear models in bikinis.

Despite the criticism, we think the message is working. I’ve never taken any notice of the safety messages until those safety devices dropped into view.

Researchers at RR headquarters agreed, one claiming that his tray table has never shot up so fast and

another claiming he urgently needed an oxygen mask to drop down from the overhead console.

Another tried on his inflatable lifejacket from under the seat, and despite being told NOT to pull the cord until he left the aircraft, he went off in row 48C. It was a case of premature evacuation.

Here at RR we reckon the airline could have been saved the strife, plus had the job done cheaper, if they’d contracted Schapelle Corby in her new role, as a swimsuit designer.

Because now she’s out of jail, the convicted drug smuggler is apparently designing bikinis for sister Mercedes. Interesting, since you’d think Mercedes would look better in a short black dress. However, Schapelle has lined up the design job while she’s on parole.

We have some helpful suggestions for her design career.

Reefer brand: for that stoned wash look.

Here’s a sexy little number.

A serial number, in fact.

As a celebrity endorsement of the new designs, perhaps Bevan Chuang could model.

We’d suggest the Mayoral chain bikini. The one that undoes when you pull the Mayoral chain. Len would appreciate that. Plus our own cricketing drunkard Jesse Ryder could do a great job modelling half a bikini.

He’s made a right tit of himself lately.

Poor Schapelle. She’s been the butt of jokes for nearly a decade now. Who knows why this story has been so big. There are 218 other Australians locked up in foreign jails and they aren’t getting any publicity.

Back here the jokes are doing the round again. Reminds me of Ewen Gilmour’s classic from many years ago. He says he went travelling and was horrified to find that someone had stashed a boogie board in his dope bag.

Finally the politicians have got back to doing what they do best.

Calling each other names.

Mr Key has been just too polite in his terms at the top; he’s forgotten this most vital part of the PM role – throwing abuse at the others.

We don’t condone this sort of behaviour – we insist on it.

Mindless columns such as this struggle to survive when politicians do what

National have done for the last few years – being polite and getting on with the job.

Now finally, they’re getting into the swing of it, but it’s taken them years to get the job right!

Calling Cunliffe an idiot hopefully is the start of some decent insulting, not just a one-off aberration.

Some of the best insults came from the Muldoon and Lange eras.

Muldoon described Opposition Leader Bill Rowling as a shiver looking for a spine to run up. And Michael Bassett was called the only man in the House who could eat a banana sideways.

Lange on Muldoon: I wouldn’t call the Prime Minister gutless. That’s all that’s left of him.

Ah those were the golden years, when politicians weren’t afraid to let it sling. It all changed with Ms Clark and the PC brigade; then Nice John. The entertainment has fallen horribly flat. Even Winston isn’t up to standard these days. Let’s hope they can muster some mongrel and get on with what they were elected to do: give some quality mudslinging entertainment.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest blockbuster ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ is not just a movie for Tauranga man Mark Brinkman.

The film is the most recent reminder of Mark’s time spent as a deckhand on Jordan Belfort – the real Wolf of Wall Street’s 167 foot motor yacht in 1996.

The yacht came to a sullen end on June 22, 1996, when it capsized during a Mediterranean storm – an event depicted in the film.

Mark had been employed as a deckhand on the yacht for three weeks when the event occurred.

He was on board alongside Jordan, Jordan’s wife Nadine (whose name is changed to Naomi in the film), and about 18 other crew and guests.

The yacht, named Nadine, was travelling to Sardinia, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, and reportedly sank 50 miles off the coast.

Jordan himself has admitted in interviews to being high on drugs when he made the decision to venture out despite captain Marc

Elliot warning of bad weather.

Mark remembers the trip clearly – describing it as panicked and life-threatening.

“The seas started building up and we thought we could handle it, but of course it kept on building.”

Mark says panic arose when they lost the yacht’s 26ft tender at about 4pm.

“This was only in about 8-10ft waves, then it got to 20ft and then it got to 50ft near the end; we were experiencing about 60 knot winds.”

At 9pm a mayday call was made, and the Italian Coast Guard responded.

“They sent someone out and winched him down by helicopter, and he was swinging around in the wind. We thought ‘No we’re going to lose people in the water’ so we said to abort.

“I thought, ‘This could be life threatening’.”

As the stern began going under the yacht was slowly sinking. The crew and guests survived the night and were rescued about 6am, says Mark.

“Eventually the sun came up, the sea was calm, and it was like ‘Apoc-

alypse Now’. It was just weird, it’s almost unexplainable.”

Mark still has his crew T-shirt, and albums full of photos capturing the three weeks aboard the yacht. In many is a smiling Jordan – a man Mark only speaks fondly of, despite his seedy representation on film.

“From the first day he came on the boat, until the end of this, him and his wife and all their friends, I thought they were the nicest people. And they liked me, because I was a Kiwi.”

Mark admits the whole experience was much like a party, with Jordan shelling out money for lavish clothes, accommodation and entertainment daily.

“Jordan was a party animal, and all of his friends were too; to me, I had no idea he was that bad.

“He was a nice guy, he looked after me, and he helped save my life in a small sense.”

After the storm, Mark kept in touch with Jordan for about three years. He eventually moved back to Tauranga where he has lived on and off for the last 30 years.

Forget about retiring to a quiet junk yard or back section, a dozen-odd seasoned caravans are going out with a bang on their last trip this Saturday.

The tired caravans, along with a few trailers carrying assorted loads, will be raced around ASB Baypark speedway in the annual Caravan Derby – an event speedway manager Roger Bailey describes as an “absolute hoot”.

“We are expecting all sorts, from dunnies to boats to even a dog box this year,” says Roger, who describes highlights from last year’s race as seeing a ‘Rena’

lookalike boat capsize off a trailer and the Classic Hits car – which was towing a ‘dunny’ – losing control, doing 360 spins down the track.

Seasoned Tauranga speedway drivers Mike Lowe and Ryan Decke, who have both claimed their shared of derby success, will be at this year’s event.

“I just love smashing things up,” says Mike, a veteran of about 20 demolition derbies. “It’s just a bit of fun,” says Mike, who will be towing an old caravan behind the Commodore he used in last year’s teams derby.

“There’s a lot of satisfaction in smashing into things,” he says with a chuckle. “You can’t

exactly do it on the road.”

Mike says his strategy is mainly about speed and knocking out any obstacles that happen to get in his way.

“You just go hard out and keep out of the way of others – they [the caravans] are probably going to take a few knocks – but as long as you are still towing something when you cross the finish line, that’s all that matters.

“We haven’t got one to roll yet, but who knows – it’s worth a crack.”

Mike is among a field of about 20 drivers expected to compete in the derby, which will conclude this Saturday’s speedway meeting.

Tauranga residents are to face hard choices on how the city’s libraries are developed, following the city council’s Annual Plan discussions this week.

TCC councillors’ late-January approval to include the Greerton Library upgrade in its 2014/2015 Annual Plan, on the condition construction is achieved without rates input, has seen representatives this week put forward a library money trade-off.

Council meeting discussions show Greerton’s build money is from development contributions and the sale of property, but running costs need to be found from the city libraries’ total $2.692 million budget.

Currently, the mobile library budget is providing the $46,000 required to run Greerton Library.

With the city’s mobile library costing $104,000 per year to deliver 2.7 per cent of the total library issues, TCC councillor Matt Cowley says the council is happy

for the community and library users to discuss a tradeoff decision – “a bigger Greerton Library or a mobile library”.

“We’re keeping $35,000 in the budget to have a home delivery service for those in need; those who can’t leave their home,” says Matt, who suggests schools using the mobile library can instead get bulk loans.

“We explored other options, such as closing all libraries on Sundays or reducing technology support services, but councillors felt access to libraries and information is critically important,” says Matt. “And a lot of people with disabilities cannot climb up onto the [mobile library] bus.”

When the mobile library service was last threatened

by TCC in 2010, it sparked a huge public backlash with the council receiving 171 annual plan submissions protesting the move.

Step-brother admits fatal crash

A bus load of school children escaped with only minor injuries in a crash that hospitalised a young truck driver and closed the highway outside Te Puke for almost three hours on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the crash between the Go Bus and light truck at State Highway 2, south of Te Puke, at 8.25am.

The 26-year-old driver of the Chaytor Fences truck was initially trapped in the vehicle that was heading south on SH2 when it and the bus collided. He was freed by firefighters and transported to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

The Go Bus was transporting 38 students from Te Puke High School, Te Puke Intermediate, Te Puke Primary School and Fairhaven School from Paengaroa to Te Puke.

Four students suffered minor injuries – two from Te Puke Primary, one from Te Puke Intermediate and the other from Te Puke High School. All were treated at the scene for cuts and abrasions but not transported to hospital.

An insect found on imported Italian kiwifruit at a Tauranga supermarket could pose a serious threat to New Zealand’s newest gold kiwifruit variety, says Barry O’Neill of Kiwifruit Vine Health.

Two White Peach Scale insects, a species which has caused significant problems for the industry in Italy, were spotted by a Plant and Food Research scientist in a Tauranga supermarket.

The step-brother of a Katikati teenager killed in a drunken crash on Labour Day last year has pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Colt Arthur Tupaea John Murcott, 19, admitted to being the drink-driver of the car that crashed, killing 16-yearold Ricky Pettigrew, when he appeared by audio-visual link in the High Court at Tauranga on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old from Katikati also pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless driving causing injury, causing injury while driving with excess blood alcohol and failing to stop and ascertain injury.

Scullin assault: Man fails to appear An arrest warrant is being issued for the 21-year-old Tauranga man, who assaulted Merivale father Lance Scullin the night before he died, after he failed to appear in court yesterday.

Mihaka Ratahi was due to appear for sentencing in Tauranga District Court on Thursday morning after pleading guilty in January to assault with a blunt instrument.

Whale dies at Pilot Bay A juvenile whale was killed at Pilot Bay this week after it became stranded near the Mauao boat ramp.

The baby grey beaked whale was visibly injured and unable to be re-floated near the ramp at the base of Mauao, about 5.30pm on Sunday. The whale, measuring approximately 3 metres, had visible injuries to its underside and tail.

The 71-year-old died overnight on February 6, following a recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. A funeral was held for Jean Euphemia Finlayson Rorke at Holy Trinity Church on Wednesday, attended by about 200 people, where she was remembered as a remarkable ‘history-loving’ and ‘helpful’ wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

At the funeral, Jinty’s husband Dr David Rorke shared stories of their life together and bid farewell to his beloved partner.

“I feel split in half. I don’t know how I can live without your humour, laughter and tender care. You will be surely missed.”

Jinty’s death is a huge loss to the city and its history community, after playing a vital role in preserving the region’s heritage in Tauranga for 27 years as Tauranga City Library’s New Zealand archivist.

Jinty worked with The Elms Historic Mission House for about 20 years and was also a long-time member of NZ Historic Places Trust, Elms Trust and a Tauranga Moana Museum Trust member.

She and husband David first arrived in Pilot Bay on a sailing boat in 1976. Her accolades include a Queen’s Service Medal in 2007 – an honour she described to The Weekend Sun as a “great recognition for history”.

Jinty’s death came as a shock to friends, including fellow history-lover Chris Callinan.

Chris’ wife Barrie met Jinty when the two women were climbing family trees with the NZ Society of Genealogists’ Tauranga branch.

“Jinty had asked Barrie where her accent was from – and when she realised she was from a small Caribbean island [Barbados] they got on well and chatted about that.

Jinty and her husband had worked in the Caribbean and had a couple of kids while sailing out to New Zealand – and my wife always thought how brave that was.”

Chris soon became friends with Jinty and describes her as “a talking computer” when it came to local history.

“The thing that I found with Jinty was that I felt she got pleasure from helping –and it did not seem to be a chore for her, she just liked to help.”

Close friend Heather McLean met Jinty in 1980 when she became an archivist in the city library and says the well-loved historian “always stood up for what she believed in”.

“I always got on very well with her,” says Heather.

“She was a good friend, she was very knowledgeable.”

They flew their first solo flights at 16 years old last year – and next weekend Sevi Rust, Isaac O’Kell and Erin Carter will represent Tauranga in the National Flying Competitions.

The three young Tauranga pilots are making their stamp in the aviation industry – early – by all qualifying for the upcoming nationals to be held in Tauranga on February 20-22.

Hosted by Tauranga Aero Club, it’s the first time the competition has been held at Tauranga Airport in about 20 years, says club supporter and competition judge Aidan Campbell.

“The opportunity to host is very exciting for the club; I’m not sure of the exact date, but it’s a

good 20 years or so since it was last here.”

About 70 qualifiers from regional competitions in November will compete in the three-day event.

Among Tauranga’s 18 or so entrants are Sevi, Isaac and Erin – who have all received scholarships in the last two years from Flying NZ and are interested in a future in aviation.

“We’re pretty rapt with the young ones, just because of their age and the fact all three of them qualified,” says Aidan.

Sevi is most looking forward to seeing who his competition is and trying to do the best he can.

“I’m excited for the prize giving, and just to see what the day’s like. Hopefully there won’t be too much wind.

“I’m feeling okay about it, but I don’t want to be too confident.”

Many young pilots end up with careers in the aviation industry, and that’s where Erin hopes to be.

“I plan to do commercial piloting for a commercial airline, perhaps for Air New Zealand.

It’s a really good opportunity for travel; that’s a perk of the job.”

All three students experienced their first solo flight last year.

Isaac says the experience was “pretty crazy”.

“At first I was really nervous but then it was all good. Once I took off it was sweet, it’s hard to describe. But you can’t feel the person who is normally sitting next to you, and that was weird.”

The competition is mostly for recreational pilots and includes formation flying, aerobatics, navigation, landing competitions, and more. This year Australia’s national team will also compete.

Legal high plan Western Bay of Plenty District residents will soon be able to submit views on a newly-released draft Psychoactive Substances Policy.

The Western Bay Council policy proposes limiting the location of legal high retailers in the district to Katikati and Te Puke’s town centre commercial zones. It requires legal high retailers be separated by at least 750 metres and sited at least 100 metres from sensitive sites, including schools, kindergartens, childcare centres and libraries.

The council will ask for submissions on policy, once adopted later this month.

Men wait until last minute Friday is the best day for Valentine’s Day, says Tauranga florist Blooms on Cameron manager Margaret Beck, as her phone runs red hot with flower orders.

While she can’t say exactly how many orders the store is getting, orders have been pouring in since Tuesday with about 30 called in during one day – and the phones haven’t stopped ringing since, says Margaret (pictured) who reckons it’s because February 14 is on a Friday this year.

“We’re anticipating this year is going to be one of the best Valentine’s. From what we’ve learned, the later in the week it gets, the busier we are…every year that’s the pattern.

“It’s all about getting flowers at your place of business.

Ninety per cent of our orders are going to a business.”

on a Friday was in 2003.

Margaret, who is also president of Interflora, says phone orders started rolling in on Tuesday but she reckons it’s more common for men to personally visit the shop. “Most guys don’t preorder. Friday is the day and as soon as the doors open, they’re coming in. That is the biggest part of the day, which is walk-ins, but I must admit they’re getting better.”

The most popular is a bouquet of flowers with a traditional red rose in the middle.

Margaret orders flowers as many as three weeks prior to the day of love, due to high demand. They arrive a week out from February 14 and are kept in the chiller until ready to be made-up.

It’s going to be a metal day at The Elms this Sunday, February 16, with music from Tauranga Brass and the Jaguar Club providing a display of the Marque’s top sports cars.

There’s going to be two one-hour recitals by Tauranga Brass, with Otumoetai College Symphonic playing in the intervals.

Parking wardens on the march

Public feedback is being sought on a moneymaking proposal for the city’s transportation department – to hire an extra parking warden to work outside the business districts of Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Greerton, where the TCC staff currently ply their trade.

With the move coming up in this week’s Annual Plan discussions at council chambers, TCC city transportation manager Martin Parkes says staff get a

lot of complaints about parking infringements in outlying business districts. This comment was answering TCC councillor Catherine Stewart’s complaint about the mixed message being put out by council wanting to entice foot traffic back into the city.

“They are not currently getting the level of enforcement they are requesting,” says Martin.

“So, in order to get the level of service the community wants, it needs additional enforcement – and that’s what it is about. It’s not actually about raising additional revenue.”

Martin says the consequence of having additional officers is there will always be an additional revenue stream. “That’s not the driver

behind it. The driver behind it is to ensure the restrictions in the bylaw, which are there for a very good reason, are actually being monitored.”

The council is also looking at changing its ticketing regime, says Martin. TCC is currently one of only a few councils that only charges half price for a car with no registration and no warrant of fitness. Most councils and the police issue two $200 tickets, while Tauranga only issues one.

Martin says while the wardens will act on complaints, “it doesn’t mean parking wardens are going to be going down residential cul de sacs, looking for vehicles parked on the side of the road that haven’t got warrants or registration”.

Dog subsidy on way out The non-dog owning ratepayers’ subsidy of Tauranga’s dog population is to be reduced in the city council’s 2014/2015 Annual Plan, to go out for consultation, with dog owners having to pay more.

Until now Tauranga City Council’s policy has been for ratepayers to pay about 20 per cent of the cost of managing the dogs, about $60,000.

The proposal in TCC’s Annual Plan, among discussions this week, is to halve the ratepayer subsidy to 10 per cent – a measure that will require a $6 increase in registration fees per dog.

Most of the fees and fines under the Dog Control Act are set by parliament, says TCC

manager of animal services John Payne.

For example, the dangerous dog fee is set at 150 per cent of the registration fee, so raising the fee from $72 to $78, will raise the dangerous dog fee from $108 to $117, says John.

A proposal to spend $200,000 on refurbishing the dog pound this year is also being axed in the annual plan, which is set to go out for public consultation next month.

The move will interrupt an ongoing upgrade of the existing facility, says John “We’ve already done one wing and one extension we’ve added on. It’s an ageing asset, but we can still use it.”

Bethlehem buzzes Book sales, markets and toe-tapping music – there is plenty happening in Bethlehem this weekend.

Heated pool for school Bethlehem School students arrived back to school this year to a newly-heated pool and an upgraded playground.

Principal Brian Field says about $20,000 has been spent on upgrading the school’s confidence course and fitness trail on the playground and a further $25,000 has been injected into heating the swimming pool. The money has been raised by the school’s PTA, with most of the funds raised from Bethlehem School’s annual Cow Dump Gala, says Brian.

He says the main reason for heating the pool is to schedule swimming earlier into the year.

“Those kids who do their swimming in the morning; in the past, it’s often been very cold. Now that the pool can

get up to 27 degrees Celsius it makes a huge difference for the kids and how long they can stay in the water.

“It’s so important for our kids to be safe and confident in the water and to develop skills that will help them in the water.”

Upgrades to the playground’s confidence course include a sand pit, platforms and rope swings, a flying fox and developing the fitness trail, which is a track around the outside of the playground.

Another highlight for Brian is the roll reached 500 students last year, which he says is a milestone for the school.

Budgeting to deliver an affordable vision Delivering good projects without increasing Council’s debt.

Delivering vibrancy through events without increasing budgets.

These were our collective priorities when we publicly released the details of our first draft budget on Monday. Please keep them in mind when you read the juicy media headlines during the next few weeks.

The challenge that I (and some other councillors) were given during the election was to build the city’s vibrancy while taking control of the city’s finances.

To progress the city forward, we’ve limbered up the council’s

budgets by reviewing our services. Council provides excellent services across many activities that people may either take for granted or not notice.

For example, I’m a lifeguard at Papamoa Beach, but I can see the benefit of limiting beach grooming to the Mount’s main beach only and diverting remaining funding to boosting city-wide events.

Other services have faced changes in different ways. We’re proposing the animal control activity is 90 per cent funded by user fees, which means a $6 increase in dog registration fees.

The Mount Hot Pools require work to maintain a consistent water temperature. We’re increasing entrance fees to help recover a $600,000 loan for a new bore.

We’ve established a new $50,000 community fund where we match your contribution dollar for dollar to complete projects you choose for your neighbourhood.

I’ll discuss other service changes in future columns.

I commend the professional and impartial advice given by staff to inform the implications of our decisions. It wasn’t an easy process and I emphasise these draft budget decisions were made by councillors.

The debate continues over the $100 levy (an average per property) for fixing stormwater. The

levy is in addition to the two per cent general rate increase.

The Community Development Committee held its first ever meeting on Monday. All elected members attend this committee. It shows our priority of engaging the public on local issues. It’s tasked with having a helicopter view of emerging issues in the community.

We intend to hold these meetings in the suburbs when there are key issues.

I am constantly in awe of the power of the social network, especially Facebook. I have two Facebook pages myself; one being a personal one to connect me with close friends and family around the globe, and another is more of a public page with about 5400 friends. It’s really interesting to see some of the types of pages that pop up when I’m browsing through, or seeing and hearing about what others are looking at on there. Of course, there are negative pages, which I am often alerted to as well; the stereotyping of certain ethnicities and pages that encourage negative behaviour, such as the neknominate phase, recently causing numerous hospital admissions and even fatalities.

The ability to provide

From the local constituent clinics and public meetings I hold, I know there are people out there who are still struggling to find work and to provide the kind of life they want for their families. These are decent, hardworking people who would far rather be working than having to rely on Government support.

I know being off welfare and in work means a better life and better opportunities for individuals and their families.

Last year, we introduced further welfare reforms focusing on vulnerable young people and encouraging employment opportunities. These reforms are delivering strong results.

Breaking the poverty cycle From the relative comfort and security of the Western Bay, the issues of slavery and bone-gnawing poverty may seem like a relic of history. But not for former Papamoa man Steve Chitty.

Twelve years ago Steve and his wife began by sponsoring a child through World Vision.

A visit to see what World Vision is doing soon followed – and he returned to Papamoa inspired to help make a difference for those in need.

In June 2013 his passion was reignited on a cycling trip through Cambodia, visiting young woman rescued from forced prostitution.

Steve, now based in Hong Kong, says it motivated him to set up Life Cycle – an organisation promoting its anti-slavery/poverty message around the world and with cycle trips through Asia. The trips aim to engage riders with the issues and inspire them to make a difference.

“We’re like an usher that leads people into the main show,” says Steve, who is pleased with the response from Tauranga, with three people already booked for their first tour.

Sailing club open for new initiative A taste of sailing and boating is on offer this weekend as part of a new initiative to get more people interested in the sport.

The Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club will open its doors to people of all ages and abilities on Sunday from 10am for Yachting New Zealand’s first Volvo National Sailing and Boating Day. The nationwide event is expected to see hundreds of people take part in the sport at open days and have a go sessions and fun events for all of the family at various sailing clubs.

Gary says the best age for learning to sail is 9-12 years old. “What we’ve found is we hook the kids and adults follow,” says Gary.

The event follows a winning effort from Tauranga sailors at a recent international regatta in Auckland.

“The Tauranga sailing scene is just stunning. Six of the division winners had an association with Tauranga, either one or both of the two sailors, and then individuals.”

Yachting New Zealand chief executive David Abercrombie says while many Kiwis love getting out on the water, not everyone knows how to get started in sailing.

“Volvo National Sailing and Boating Day is an opportunity for clubs to give those people a taste of our sport in a fun and welcoming environment.”

The tournament, which is expected to attract about 1500 players and supporters from as far as Southland, will see under-15 and under 17-teams go head to head

Bay of Plenty Touch junior tour manager Steph Walker hopes the lack of travel for the Bay teams will help them perform at their best, but says they’re up against fierce competition.

“We’re always aiming to win, but it will come down to the day,” says Steph, who rates the under-15 girls as the best-performing Bay team last year, when they finished fourth in the tournament when it was held at the Gordon Spratt reserve.

Steph says one of the added challenges for the Bay teams – which cover the area from Taupo to Opotoki and the Western Bay – is the difficulty in training as often as many of the other dominant regional teams.

“Some of those teams train at least twice a week, but with the distances here the teams can only do it once weekly.”

The Bay teams are dominated by players from the Whakatane and Rotorua areas, where touch is stronger, with a sprinkling of players from around Tauranga.

Among Western Bay players taking to the field for the under 15 elite team are Harawira Ohia and Lee Ririnui.

Tauranga teenager Laura Elliot knew medicine was the career for her – even before she left high school.

Laura is one of five former Otumoetai College students including Simone Besseling, James Gilling, Megan Thurlow and Lucy Eagar to be accepted into the Otago University of Medicine this year.

Completing their first year Health Science course, the five students have been accepted

into the second year of medicine at Otago University. Only 160 students are selected into second year from about 2000 first year students – so “it is really competitive”, says Laura.

The 19-year-old was accepted for both medicine and dental school, but chose medicine because she wasn’t ready to specialise in one subject straight away.

Taking science and health as main subjects at school, Laura’s decision to study medicine became clear in Year 11.

“My mum is a nurse so I was exposed to it a little bit, I suppose as a kid, and I have always just found it really interesting,” says Laura.

“Science has been my main subject throughout school, so when I went into medicine I really enjoyed it.”

Only one year into her six-year degree, Laura has not yet decided what she wants to specialise in – but says she has “five years to think about that”.

Bay students’ scholarship success Twelve Western Bay students will this month head off to begin their tertiary studies thousands of dollars richer, having been awarded scholarships from the Bay of Plenty Education Trust.

All 12 will receive $5750 from the trust’s annuallyawarded scholarships, which are paid in instalments during the course of the students’ studies.

To date, 201 scholars have been awarded the Bay of Plenty Education Trust Science, Technology and Emerging Industries Scholarship, with a total of $860,250 granted. The scholarships are for exemplary

students planning to pursue tertiary education in science and technology.

Raising a new generation A young Tauranga mother, who fell pregnant at age 19, is sharing her life experiences online in the hope of giving confidence to other women giving birth to Generation Z children.

Lauren Bedford-Rolleston, 23, gave birth to her daughter Helaina nearly three years ago, who is part of the Generation Z classing of babies born from the mid-2000s.

Experiencing a traumatic birth, a break up with Helaina’s father and trying to start a career as a young mum wasn’t easy for Lauren.

Now a qualified early childhood education teacher, Lauren is sharing her life and study experiences about raising Generation Z children.

“My generation – and I’m only 20 years older than her – is completely different to hers.”

“My blog is just trying to teach parents to make the best decisions they can – and how to make the best of it – because their generation is just so different.”

Noticing Lauren’s enthusiasm to learn and share her knowledge, her new partner Kayne Middleton

encouraged her to start a blog – and he designed a website for her to share her experiences and parenting ideas on.

“I’ve always been interested in how children’s brains work,” says Lauren.

“I would like to do research into the best developmental method we can do with children. “But we have to start at the start.”

Healthy food and exercise is what’s on the menu for Bay of Plenty schools and kindergartens this week, as they take part in Heart Foundation’s Healthy Heart Week.

Arataki Free Kindergarten teacher Roxy Burt says schools and kindergartens around the Bay have been participating in a healthy eating challenge this week – called Eat Five Plus a Day – as part of Healthy Heart Week.

Adorned in red, Arataki Free Kindergarten children and their parents celebrated with a bike ride around

the Arataki School field in a Wear Red Bikeathon followed by a morning tea of shared fruit on Wednesday as a special contribution.

The kindergarten has been promoting healthy eating since 2012 after staff became concerned about what children were bringing for lunch, seeing them introduce a new health policy.

This has led the kindergarten to win the first level of a Healthy Heart award. There are three levels rito, whanau and pa-harakeke.

“As a result of all that we noticed significant changes in what the children were bringing from home,” says Roxy. “We’re really promoting also that it can be a lot cheaper bringing home-grown fresh vegetables.”

“It’s so easy to be swayed by packaging and advertising at the moment. It’s also part of sustainability too and setting up these habits now in these formative years so that they will hopefully adapt them and last forever.”

The Heart Foundation is a charity working to fight heart disease. According to the foundation, every 90 minutes a New Zealander dies from heart disease and Healthy Heart week, from February 10, helps raise awareness of the disease.

How to maintain good eye health by yourself Today, we discuss the self-help things you can do to maintain health of your eye lens and eye tissue.

All eye problems should be diagnosed and treated by your doctor or eye health specialist.

The main purpose of the eye lens is to focus light to the retina at the back of the eye. A cataract is the clouding of the normally clear lens. The main cause of cataracts appears to be free radical (oxidation) damage to lens proteins, which causes clouding.

Lens cells have a high concentration of the antioxidants vitamin C, carotenoids, and especially lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin E and glutathione. The body knows the vulnerability of lens (an all-eye tissue) to UV oxidation so it stacks, if available, high amounts of antioxidants into most eye tissues.

A diet high in dark green, leafy vegetables is needed to maintain the specialised antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin to protect eye structures from UV damage.

Selenium is critical to maintain cell protecting glutathione. The best diet for eye health is lots of fruit

and vegetables, raw nuts, especially Brazil nuts, walnuts and almonds, less meats and saturated fats and rich in Omega 3, especially from oily fish. I recommend at least six glasses of water daily to maintain lens hydration.

With supplements, most people only need a comprehensive multi antioxidant/ mineral/vitamin formula and a good fish oil supplement. With the multi, look for antioxidants, especially lutein, bilberry, grape seed OPC and vitamin E. It should have a full B complex and vitamin C. With vitamin C, aim for at least 500mg daily on top of what you already get from your diet. Minerals, especially selenium, zinc, copper and manganese are important as these are the building blocks for potent eye-protecting antioxidants. Fat burning – what is good and what isn’t I am often asked by my clients how to burn fat: Should they eat carbohydrates? Should they eat before exercise?

Much of the confusion has been generated by manufacturers of so-called fat metabolisers and their dubious products. The following are a few of the most common questions: Is it true I burn more fat at low-intensity exercise? The percentage of fat burned at low intensity exercise is much higher than at high intensity exercise. However, more fat calories are burned at high intensity exercise, so for the same time duration of activity it is better to train at a higher intensity.

Will I lose more weight on a low-carbohydrate diet?

The healthiest way to lose weight is a combination of

increased exercise and good food choices. The body’s preferred energy is carbohydrates.

These let us exercise at high intensity, so burn more calories. However, not all carbohydrates are healthy or suited to help burn fat, so good choice around exercise is advised.

Why should I not use fat-burning products? Maintaining long-term health should always be considered when looking at fat loss. Fat burners can cause liver damage and they don’t ‘train’ the body to use fat as an energy source, so once you stop using them your body may revert to survival mode and start storing fat at a higher rate than previously. Some products also stimulate insulin release, which is contrary to fat burning and defeats the object of using them.

Free course offers help for aging population A free seven-week course is available to help elderly people cope with the decline of their physical and mental health.

Bethlehem Baptist Church has developed the course for elderly residents and their adult children to offer advice and support.

Topics covered include Age Concern and their resources, the physical and mental aging process, rest homes and lifestyle villages, dying with dignity, funerals and legal documents.

Professional speakers will attend the evening sessions with an open-question time at each course.

Steve Warburton attended the Age-Care Course in 2013, and says he had no idea how hopeful and informative it would be.

He considers it a must for any adult person to attend.

“My wife suggested we attend as we have aging parents and have had a family member recently die and there were concerns over care.

“The course is very

informative and every session was relevant. Those attending had lots of questions and were keen to gather as much information as they could.”

Roger’s living in a home full of history Not everyone can say they live in a home which is believed to have as much history as the 140 year old property of Tauranga’s Roger Peters.

Built in 1874, Roger’s Kauri-constructed home on Courtney Rd is full of history.

It was built by Canon Charles Jordan.

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust says the Canon was the first vicar of Holy Trinity Church and a repeating Mayor of Tauranga. A statue stands in memory of him on Wharepai Domain inside the war memorial gates.

Living in the home for 20 years, Roger says part of the building was moved from its original position in Eighth Ave to Courtney Rd in 1955.

“I bought some of the items from the old Masonic Hotel that was downtown, including the hotel’s staircase, which dates back to 1865, so there’s a bit of history there,” says Roger.

“The bottom stair is now a servery in our kitchen [and] you can see were the newel post was – imagine the history of Tauranga that has put a foot here.”

Features of the home are the staircase and the dining room, which Roger says is where the first schooling was held after the land wars in the 1860s.

“I approached NZ Historic Places Trust about the place, but they didn’t seem too interested. I assume because it isn’t on the original site,” says Roger.

“But I have found out that its history is now recorded on the property’s building profile.”

employers or the Ministry of Social Development to make regular deductions from the salaries or benefits of people who owe money in a judgment or court order, until their debt is fully paid. This is usually the most effective means of recovering the judgment debt.

The District Courts Act 1947 will be amended to make it easier for creditors to obtain an attachment order.

The Residential Tenancies Act 1986 will be amended to enable tenancy tribunal adjudicators and mediators to record the details of an attachment order agreed to by both parties at the tribunal hearing.

This will enable an attachment order to be imposed immediately by the district court.

If you have a tenancy tribunal order, these law changes make it a lot easier to start collecting that money; and hopefully force the habitual offenders to change their ways.

As Omokoroa Country Estate celebrates 25 years in business, the family behind it is reflecting on the years of passionate work and dedication which has made the retirement village the success it is today.

Keryn and Fraser agreed to the trust’s proposal, and in the tough market time of 1987 began building the first seven homes in the village.

Seasonal bounty not wasted At this time of the year the question is often asked:

What are we to do with all of the bountiful perishable produce different

parts of our gardens produce?

Sometimes it works out because you get given extra vegetables and fruits you don’t grow, as they all seem to be ready at the same time.

Some of us preserve and freeze the extra glut of produce.

This year, so far, I’ve received kumi kumi pumpkin, yukon (a crisp root vegetable), scarlet runner beans, silverbeet, tomatoes galore – and just recently a load of fresh, juicy golden queen peaches.

Sometimes, as an opportunistic realist, I accept backhanders and bribes with the possibility of a mention in this column – so just bear this in mind.

But just the thought of tasting another batch of roasted peach chutney excites me, as I’ve used the last of the previous year’s supply.

But then I realised I have two previous recipes, named Bottled Summer and Peach Melba.

So this week I have a simple solution to the perishable peach.

Fantastic in this spell of hot weather peach ice cream is made like a sorbet, making it dairy free.

Dessert

Peach ice cream Serves five Ingredients 1 Tbsp powdered gelatine 350ml water 175g sugar 6 fresh peaches, blanched, peeled and sliced 3Tbsp lemon juice Method Put the gelatine in a small bowl with four-five tablespoons of the water. Meanwhile, boil the rest of the water in a saucepan. Add the sugar and continue to simmer for about five minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the gelatine mixture until it dissolves. Set to one side to cool. Liquidise the peaches you have prepared and add them to the sugar mix and lemon juice and mix thoroughly. Transfer to a freezing tray and freeze for one hour, then mash up with a fork for a few minutes. Return to the freezer until the edges have frozen but the middle is soft. Remove and beat again, then repeat the process once more and put into a suitable container. Remove from freezer and place in fridge for 20 minutes to soften before serving.

products could be used to create fantastic martinistyle cocktails.

Take a half cup of fresh fruit, for example sliced apples or berries or melon. Add 30ml of vodka or rum or schnapps, then add 90ml of juice with fresh ice into a cocktail shaker and shake like there’s no-one watching and then strain into a chilled glass.

And enjoy, because the ‘FashionMartini’ is designed to tempt the

palate and open your taste buds.

Try adding spices or even certain herbs to create your own signature ‘Fashion-Martini’ to serve to your family or friends at home. And because the ‘Fashion-Martini’ is about creativity, you can use what’s available in your cabinet as an alcoholic base.

No amalgamation for us Our Mayor is a known driving force behind Local Government amalgamation and appears to have clear desire to be the first mayor of a Tauranga-based super city. Amalgamation is not necessarily a bad thing.

But, for it to be successful each community amalgamating must benefit and it must be a win-win situation for all.

When one looks at challenges facing some of our local councils, and taking into account the information presently available, I believe Tauranga residents

What for exactly? When settlers arrived in the North the land was barren - tribes had been chased down to the Waikato.

Maori had no idea land had any monetary worth.

If Ngapuhi insist on having their land back, despite some being sold, then they need to compensate the Crown for all the roads, every building and facility that has been built on it since 1840.

They do not own any of these and the amount owing to the Crown would just about cancel out their claims. Finlayson please take note.

Of course the amalgamation discussion must happen. But it appears to me Tauranga is sleep-walking towards amalgamation as there has been little discussion and little information made available to residents.

Who remembers the enforced amalgamation of Mount Maunganui and Tauranga, during the Local Government reforms of 1989?

And one should also think do we really want a city that is set up like Auckland?

Or for that matter a Mayor like Len Brown?

Contradiction of subsidies I see from the Weekend Sun’s recent letters page N McKey ‘No work, no pay back in the day’ (January 24) and Graeme Martin ‘Propping people up: dropping NZ down’ (January 31) are taking some cheap shots at beneficiaries. I’m reminded of a farmer I briefly worked for in 1986, pruning kiwifruit.

He grumbled about people going on the unemployment benefit, then grumbled about the government removing his subsidies.

Then, because I was not trained as a horticulturalist, he laid me off, explaining he knew I was a good worker, and did not want to, but he had to.

And he never connected any of those points up.

I noticed the same thing later while I lived in Christchurch, looking for work there.

Business leaders were adamant the welfare subsidies destroyed initiative, then begged for taxpayer and ratepayer subsidies.

A business without initiative goes out of business, unless it is a roadside food stall or the like. And they never noticed the contradiction.

The very least one expects from people is that they think. But what can you do?

Lower crime responsibility age It is time the legal age for responsibility for major crimes is reviewed.

Young people aged 14 or 15, who are considered too immature to realise the gravity of their transgressions or to be aware of the moral codes that define our society, are responsible for heinous crimes.

But they’re protected from many of the legal penalties while retaining their anonymity.

If a child at the age of 12 is already committing serious offences then it is time for some sort of effective deterrent to be

employed, and his caregiver to be called to task. Immaturity should be no excuse. Family conferences where there is a lot of talk and promises of affirmative action are traditionally ineffective because the factors that cause the problems, lack of parental guidance and responsibility, in a section of society bereft of moral standards, do not change.

In olden times miscreants were put into the stocks.

While this practice may be a bit dated, as is the hanging of an eight-year-old for stealing

a loaf of bread, it did give the populace an opportunity to show their disapproval.

But more importantly it disclosed the identity of the criminals.

Nowadays, lawbreakers, who may be responsible for a multitude of crimes over a long period, have their identities and criminality unknown by the general population; and so they can continue with their illegal activities, unchecked.

While a system of ‘Name and Shame’ by publishing the name and previous convictions of the offender may not deter him, it may cause his relatives, friends and associates to show their disapproval by ostracising him - or by accepting some responsibility for his behaviour.

Carparking dilemma on Cameron The powers that be, have had the road turned up outside the Tauranga Hospital for weeks. Once finally finished I used Cameron Rd, going into the farmers’ market from my home in Pyes Pa. I was amazed to find, having finished their work, they’ve thought it a good idea to place a dotted yellow line from the hospital, with no parking, that continues as far as the 17th Ave traffic lights, thus making a dual carriage way as there is no kerb-side parking.

This I suppose is good in one way but doesn’t alter the fact that all of the cars that used to park there have to find another spot, which is probably in an area required by patient’s or visitors I’ve spent more than 10 minutes on

one occasion trying to find a place, so I could go and see my wife who was a patient.

The ground opposite the hospital, by the entrance, which was used as an extra car park (for which you had to pay), is now being built on; and recently the hospital had a large extension built on it, which means more staff and patients.

I’ve not seen any notice advising people where they can now park.

I don’t think for one minute Tauranga City Council could care less about the parking problem they’ve caused.

They consider what they have done has improved the road, and is not going to affect anyone.

TCC responds:

A number of upgrades are taking place here to address current and future congestion issues.

These are co-funded by an 18th Ave developer, Tauranga Hospital and TCC. There is significant pressure on car parking facilities in this area, but it was not possible to retain on-street carparking without affecting road safety.

Reliance on on-street carparking spaces reflects the shortfall of nearby off-street carparking spaces, which is something TCC is focussed on improving in the short and medium term.

Our NZ anthem is the best in world

I read with sadness E Izett’s letter regarding changing our national anthem.

I know you are not the only one that would like to see it replaced and this leads me to believe you do not know this God you so despise is actually knowable.

I know because I know Him and have experienced the power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead.

Anyone who has not experienced an encounter with the Creator of the Universe has missed the greatest experience in life.

If atheism can offer me a better life than one of fulfilment satisfaction peace and contentment with the God I know, and the God of the anthem, then I will have a good look at what you have to offer.

Let our anthem be forever - it actually is the best one in the world.

A designer behind us all Yet again Ernest Izett puts up the wrong argument as though God, Christianity and the bible are on one side - and evolution and science are opposed to them.

Everybody who ever lived makes decisions of faith since we are unable to be 100 per cent certain of the ‘big questions’.

I believe there is a ‘designer’ behind everything.

Ernest believes nothing is behind everything.

With the complexities we see in nature and the universe I don’t have the great faith needed to believe nothing was responsible for its existence.

Science was largely developed (and still is), by Christians and surely a creator would be free to use both long and short periods of time in developing ‘things’.

Gondola: Ugly blight on landscape M Stanley’s call to establish a gondola system on Mauao (Weekend Sun, January 24) is not new.

Some 30 years ago, I attended a ceremony officiated by Maori elders Riini Paraire, William Ohia and then-Mayor of the Mount Maunganui Borough Council, held on the summit of Mauao in response to an identical proposal launched by corporate interests.

The proposal was actively opposed by Maori then, and my guess is the current generations of Kiwis of all different heritages will not tolerate such blatant despoiling of a famous icon.

The idea of steel towers embedded into its slopes, holding up miles of steel cable,

descending down to Mr Stanley’s “100-space carpark” is appalling and will constitute an ugly blight on the landscape.

Mauao is visually stunning in its natural state. If people want to view the world from the summit of Mauao they are free to climb it at no cost.

And Mount Maunganui does not need another carpark, as carpark space is already at a premium.

Finally, Mauao is of immense cultural significance to Tauranga Maori and this wonderful environmental asset is available to be enjoyed by all.

Mr Stanley’s suggestion to rename of Mauao in order to pander to passing tour-

ists is also abhorrent. The name Mauao has its origins in a traditional Maori narrative, which together with its history makes it a very special mountain.

I take comfort in that any attempt to implement Mr Stanley’s gondola and other suggestions will be strongly opposed by the good people of Tauranga-Mount Maunganui, who identify with Mauao as part of their local landscape.

Plus, M Stanley’s plan will be thwarted by an array of legislation, such as the Resource Management Act 1991, Historic Places Act 1993 and Mauao Historic Reserve Vesting Act 2008.

However, I feel compelled to respond to M Stanley’s letter about putting a gondola on Mauao (The Weekend Sun, January 24).

I personally love being in New Zealand since arriving by the big white waka; the P&O ship Orsova in 1971.

I wonder where and how you came here?

Part of the joy of living in NZ is the different place names and rolling your tongue and mind around them, as well as enjoying the meetings with tangata whenua.

Its just like a trip overseas.

You need to learn about NZ history and land ownership, as well as the role council and local iwi play in Tauranga, before you launch into print.

Mr Colin Bidois is right; you should take up his offer to meet at a hui on any of the marae involved.

However, Colin, may I suggest you add salt and pepper to the puha and pakeha, to add seasoning to the tasteless remarks.

No poverty in NZ The other day I had a young man come to my doorstep and ask for me to sign up to monthly payments to support Barnados children’s charity.

He asked if I am aware that a percentage of Kiwi children live in poverty, and explained how Barnados help with offering parenting skills etc to parents.

While I am all for this type of work, I have a problem with organisations and Government departments in this country using the word ‘poverty’.

How can children in a first world nation, where there is support available in the form of WINZ payments, live in poverty?

Children in third world countries, where there is no clean water, food or shelter available, live in poverty.

There are children in this country who are not fed or clothed properly, but from what I can see this is purely from parents who choose buying cigarettes and alcohol above providing for their family.

In some Australian states, people receiving Government assistance get their money on a ‘BasicsCard’, which will not allow any purchases of cigarettes or alcohol – no matter where it is purchased, such purchases will be declined on the card.

I wonder if this ‘BasicsCard’ was introduced to NZ’s benefit receivers - would it make a difference to Kiwi children’s welfare?

Something for us taxpayers to think about.

Bowling cricket conflict Why do the Black Cap bowlers bowl the ball so that it bounces about five metres from the crease, which makes it a good height to attempt to hit with the bat.

Now, if they bowled a ball to land at or near the batsman’s feet – not a Yorker, but about half a metre from the crease, that is the hardest ball to hit, so that would cut the run-rate considerably.

I don’t understand why they don’t do this, as they are experienced players and should think how to cut the run-rate.

And those two-pitch lengths run-up to bowl a ball – absolutely unnecessary.

A month crammed full with events to enjoy Perhaps it's because February is a short month; perhaps it's because everybody thinks the weather will be good.

Whatever the reason, February just seems crammed with events, every weekend throwing up a pile of interesting-looking musical acts coming to town.

And, actually, it can't really be the weather, because two of the three things I'm going to write about this week are indoors. The big one, however, and we'll start with it, is outside and is entering its fourth year.

The Tauranga Katikati Acoustic Music Festival has it all (aside from a snappy name).

There are blackboard concerts, shows by touring bands, workshops, food and drink, camping and pretty much all you could hope for from a small acoustic festival being held, once again, on Paul and Penny's orchard at 156 Work Road, Aongatete.

It's happening next weekend, kicking off on Friday night (21 February) with a free blackboard concert. Then, next day, there are things happening from 10.00am. As well as a host of local folkies there are some highlyesteemed acts jetting in from around the country.

Looking at them, the biggest first (band size as opposed to height, girth or fame), there is Hobnail, who were once called Hobnail Boots.

They're a rocky folk band out of Wellington who started almost twenty years ago in a distinctly Irish style but

have since drifted into wider territory, taking on board a more Americana influence. Band leader and songwriter Rob Joass was in town last year as part of the Too Many Chiefs tour alongside Wayne Mason and Andrew London. Rounding out the quartet are Jo Moir (fiddle), the voice and guitar of Bonnie Riley and multi-instrumentalist Hamish Gore.

Then there's Scottish singer Owen Hugh (who, as has been pointed out, appears to have a Welsh name), a man with eight albums under his belt, a guitar and a “silver voice” (so Hattie's Live Music Guide once described him). Owen prefers the label “new acoustic” over “folkie”, and has solid credentials in the folk scene, having played many of the folk clubs in New Zealand and the UK. He’s also appeared several times at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and at the Cambridge Folk Festival.

The third headliner is Rachel Dawick, a New Zealand musician whose voice has been described as merging the grit of Mary Gauthier, the lilt of Joan Baez and the depth of Natalie Merchant. In 2010 Rachel returned to New Zealand after 8 years in the UK to develop a project researching women’s lives in the 1800s and turning those into songs which now comprise two albums. She'll be bringing a band (of which I know absolutely nothing).

be making an appearance. They're brilliant!

But this is a busy weekend. There are choices.

Also on Friday night, the Art Gallery are presenting another musical evening, this time quirky Francophile neo-jazzers the Mamaku Project. While a little tricky to describe, the six-piece band are led by two French Kiwis and are touring to promote their new album Twigs of Gold. They will also be accompanied by special visuals from Lupavision.

OK. I know that's a bit of a hard sell if you've never heard of them. For a better idea of their eccentric sounds check out the Tom Waits' rhythms on their first video from the album at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=2VkfySzAM8s – it will be an extraordinary night! (Tickets are $30.)

And then there's Graham Brazier...

New Zealand's most legendary frontman (sorry Jordan) is being hosted by Brilleaux at Drivers Bar (11 Ave shopping centre) on February 22. This is part of a new plan by the R&B band to bring iconic Kiwi musicians to town and will see Graham presenting his one-man show, in which he mixes stories, poetry and, of course, songs from his long and turbulent career. Brilleaux will also be playing, in acoustic mode, and probably backing Graham as well.

This could be brilliant. On a good night Graham is mesmerizing on stage, a true artist with a great bag of songs to dip into, from Hello Sailor material to his own inimitable tunes (“Billy Bold” anybody?). Tickets are $25 from the bar.

Annual Valentine’s special at Tauranga SPCA While Tauranga SPCA offers adoptions year-round, every now and then it throws in a little something special.

Such an occasion is on this weekend, with the organisation’s annual Valentines Adopt-a-thon on Saturday, February 15.

Tauranga SPCA operations manager Margaret Rawhiri says they need the public’s help to give as many of the shelter’s animals as possible a second chance at love and a new forever home.

“We have lots of wonderful kittens, adult cats and puppies available for adoption at the shelter, plus many more in foster all waiting for that right person to come and take them home.”

Margaret says the shelter has many colours, sizes, ages, personalities of animals, including long-haired, short-haired, quiet and playful.

This Saturday there is 20 per cent off all adoption fees, plus other in-shelter adoption fee specials – which help the SPCA towards the cost of providing the basic necessities for all of their animals before they are adopted.

This includes vet checks, flea and worm treatment, vaccinations, desexing, micro-chipping and registering details with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register.

“All our adoptions are subject to our normal adoption criteria.

There will also be exciting giveaways with every adoption, a sausage sizzle, spot prizes and loads of fun, says Margaret.

“Please support the animals; spread the word, come along to the shelter, bring your family and friends, spend some time, grab a bite to eat and meet the animals – you never know who may tug at your heart strings.”

Margaret does warn people to consider all adoptions seriously, despite specials available.

DON JON Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Tony Danza - Dir: Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Italian American and hilariously - and believably - “traditional”, hooked on romantic movies and their view of life (an equally illusory view you might cleverly point out).

The subsequent ups and downs of their relationship are played out with remarkable candour, the humour never getting in the way of the home truths. To say too much would be to give too much away but there are many pleasures on display, from Danza’s foul-mouthed father to Julianne Moore’s wonderfully quirky and yet real turn. Glenne Headly and Brie Larson also pop up.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt impresses more with every passing film. This time not only is he starring but he also wrote and directed. And he’s made a first rate job of all three, creating a film that is both very funny and unflinchingly honest.

He stars as Jon Martello, a handsome, very typical Italian American (or so I think – the film has had complaints from Italian Americans, much as The Godfather did in its day).

His mates call him Don Jon because he picks up a different woman every weekend. But Jon has a secret: he’s addicted to internet porn. This particularly becomes a problem when he falls in love. His love interest is Scarlett Johansson also Shane Carruth's debut, the ultra-clever time travel oddity Primer, was brilliant, if somewhat baffling. Long-awaited follow-up Upstream Colour is a love story in which narrative becomes increasingly less important than... the vibe. And the philosophical themes. Storywise, Kris, a woman in her twenties, has a drug forced upon her containing a worm which allows the man who did it to control her. He steals her money and ruins her life.

Later she meets Jeff (Carruth himself ) who may have been through the same thing. There's also a pig farmer with a sequencer and much that appears symbolic. It looks beautiful and has a great score (both courtesy of Carruth). A unique vision: oblique, haunting, mesmerising, again brilliant and baffling.

The Canyons was a strange and very public experiment which – almost inevitably – doesn't quite work.

The plan was concocted by director Paul Schrader and writer Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho): a low-budget film shot quickly, raising finance from the stunt casting of Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. What results is a Hollywood-set psychological thriller with Deen as a manipulative producer and Lohan as his squeeze. They play sleazy sexual power games and there's a bit of murder. There's the seed of a great

film but... Deen really doesn't have the charisma to carry it and Lohan, frankly, looks like a drugged-out mess.

Horror comedies span a wide tonal range from gross-out grindhouse to fatuous Scary Movie parody. Somewhere in the middle is the occasional gem that manages to be both frightening and funny – you could maybe argue for the recent You're Next (my favourite is Killer Klowns From Outer Space). It's a hard mix to do well. Hell Baby skew towards the Scary Movie approach where gags and movie parodies take precedence over coherence. A (very pregnant) couple move into a spooky house expect possessed pregnancy jokes before a full descent into It's Alive! territory.

Sadly, most gags miss the mark.

The Power of Few is a film with a non-linear plot that probably looked better on paper than on screen.

It follows the same twenty minutes or so several times from the perspectives of different characters, all connected, aiming to show (I think) how one person and a small decision can change everything. On the plus side it's set in New Orleans and has Christopher Walken; on the downside it's somewhat pretentious and largely wastes both New Orleans and Christopher Walken.

There's nothing especially bad here, but it all seems a little pointless.

Showing off superbike’s speed Mount Maunganui Rotary’s first-ever auto show is moving up a gear with talks it could be made a prestigious occasion on the car club calendar if it becomes an annual event.

About 300 two and four wheeled vehicles are expected to park up on Mount Maunganui College grounds on February 23 for the inaugural Show Off Your Wheels auto show – and Tauranga-based M1 Motorsport is showing off its Valvoline sponsored BMW S 1000 RR New Zealand Superbike.

M1 Motorsport public relations manager Jos Mason says the team is competing in the NZ Superbike Series,where it is ranking fifth so far – a position Jos is confident they can improve on.

Managed by Robert Ramshaw, with RWR Maintenance Fleet, the fouryear running team is introducing a

new rider this year – Linden ‘Magoo’ Magee, who has “blown the socks off ” the team with his skills on the racetrack so far.

Jos says if the auto show becomes an annual event it could be a high-status event for car and motorcycle clubs around the Bay of Plenty.

“Being a local-based race team, we love being a part of helping our local charities.

“You’ve got an entry from Glen Harland of the local NZ Streetfighters [NZ premier motorcycle custom parts and service supplier], BOP Coastal Cruisers, Mcleod Cranes, Hulme F1 machine and more – we feel that if it is a success, it’s going to be a prestigious annual event with something for everyone.”

The show is at Mount Maunganui College on Sunday, February 23, from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is $5, and primary school-aged children enter free when accompanied by an adult.

The Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise is on the search for high quality art pieces to sell in their forthcoming Treasured Art auction and exhibition.

“Every year we appeal to people who may have surplus artwork, or who might be moving or downsizing, to consider donating their artwork to this auction,” says Rotary organiser Kathy Webb.

“We operate on either a 50/50 commission basis, or some people choose to donate all of the auction funds to our cause.”

Many people are motivated to gift their art because of the good work Rotary does in supporting the local community, says Kathy.

This year the tradition will continue with the chosen beneficiary for auction funds being the Foundation for Youth Development’s Kiwi Can programme.

Once Rotary is contacted about a collection or an individual piece of art, the committee gets into action to determine its merits and its approximate value. To assist them, an art expert is engaged so the pieces are assessed appropriately.

“Each individual piece of art is then put through a final selection process to ensure only art of a high quality is included in the final auction,” says Kathy.

The final step for the organising committee is to catalogue and promote the art on their Treasured Art website.

Then, on May 15, collected artworks go under the hammer at Ingham Sears in Mount Maunganui, with further pieces included in an exhibition and silent auction that takes place from 10am on both Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17.

Building consents reach maximum Data released by Statistics NZ confirms what everyone has been seeing recently, namely that new building has risen significantly in the last year.

Building consents for new residential homes in the Bay of Plenty for the year ending December 2013 have risen 20.6 per cent from 995 to 1200 – and their value jumped 25.2 per cent, from $277.2 million to $347.3m.

While the figures are still well below the peak year of 2004, when 2325 consents valued at $489.9m were issued, it is great to see more life in the building industry and a consequent increase in jobs.

The annual number of new building consents nationwide increased by 26 per cent in 2013 compared to the previous year, taking construction to its highest level since 2007.

The rise was mainly driven by increases in Auckland and Canterbury.

Auckland saw an increase of 38 per cent, Canterbury had an increase of 43 per cent, Waikato a rise of 24 per cent and Wellington a rise of 27 per cent. The total value of building work consented in 2013 was $12.1 billion, up 20 per cent from 2012.

Thorne Group director Peter Buck has seen a return in confidence to the industry with out-of-town buyers and builders’ spec homes driving much of this growth. Many of their buyers are downsizing from big family homes and are happy with two-three bedrooms on smaller sections with

little or no garden.

Classic Builders director Peter Cooney says many new home buyers are moving from Auckland, taking advantage of the buoyant market there to buy well in the Bay, “possibly bringing forward their plans for purchasing a new home for their retirement”.

God’s Word is the plumb-line Whenever Jesus was asked about the signs of the last days, He spoke about error, deception and falsehood, which is the product of false teachers, false apostles and false prophets and manifested in lying signs and lying wonders. We see this, for example, in Matthew 24:24: “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect”.

Paul gives similar warnings in speaking about those who preach another gospel and those who proclaim another Jesus; and who manifest a different spirit from the Holy Spirit (Galatians 1:6-9; 2 Corinthians 11:4).

Praise God that He has given us a standard by which everything is to be measured, so we walk in truth and not in error – so we are not persuaded away from a sincere love for truth, or from wholehearted and sincere and pure devotion to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:1-4).

Let it be settled in our hearts that God’s Word is truth – it doesn’t simply contain truth – it is truth. Jesus says to His Father about His disciples: “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth” (John 17:17).

Psalm 119:160 declares: “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever”. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states: “All Scripture is breathed out

by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be

complete, equipped for every good work”.

There is only one standard, one plumb line for discerning truth from error, to distinguish that which is true from that which is almost true – and that is God’s Word.

Let us contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.
