er relentless attitude towards even the tiniest things around her makes her stand apart. Ever since she moved to Canada, she donned many hats. She is a style icon, a celebrity, a mother, and a fitness expert. Sandy is a living example that there’s no limit to your capabilities and success is never accidental.

“Kal is a fitness enthusiast. He had a habit of going to gym after his work. When we got married, and moved here, like anyone would face, I too was experiencing cultural shock. Everything was so new to me and being with Kal was the most important thing, so just to spend time with him I started going to gym”. Over time, Sandy became mother of two kids and put on weight in her postpartum period. In 2012, she decided to do something about her growing weight and joined gym. Then one thing led to other and in 2013 she got her fitness training certification.

supportive husband. Like a true-life partner, he has always stood with me. He is the one who in first place inspired me to be ‘me’ rather than just being a wife, a mother, a bank professional, a daughter or a daughter-in-law. At first, I had to convince myself that I really wanted to take up fitness as a profession. Coming from a simple farmer family in India, to being the wife of a VPD cop, I did transform myself, gained more experience and changed my own ideas and perception about many things. So, when I decided to become a fitness trainer, the only thing I had to do was to convince people around me of how this profession is important to me and how being a fitness trainer, I can bring change in lives of many people.” She says, “It is important for me to establish a legacy for my children. I believe parents are the best role models for their children. If they see me committed to a goal, and achieving my dreams through hard work and dedication, this will surely become ingrained into their ethos as well.” After seeing Sandy transform in the ‘fitness icon’ in South Asian community and a ‘fitness guru’, many South Asian women who faced

challenges approached her for classes and guidance. Sandy says, “I am so touched with words of appreciation I hear from women my age and sharing similar heritage. We understand each other and my only advice to them is take some time out for yourself. When you are happy, everything and everyone around you gets into the happy, calm zone. One must be mentally strong to be able to go through the challenging regime to become a fitness pro. I had my ups and downs. But what motivated me to keep going was the ‘good feeling’ I had after a rigorous work out, a sense of achievement and feeling of doing something special for myself.” Adding further, Sandy talks about the reasons why one must take this journey, “The motive must be right. You must do it for your well-being. I truly believe anyone can improve their fitness level, you must keep pushing, be selfmotivated and disciplined. In my case, I have Kal on my side. If I ever have second thoughts, he inspires me, motivates me. So yes, having support from your loved ones goes a long way.” She is now the proud owner of her very own company

THE IMPACT OF AGING ON WOMEN By: Sandy Dosanjh

A

ging gracefully is a term that conjures up images of individuals enjoying life with the same vigor and enthusiasm in their latter years, as they did in their youth. However, the truth of the matter is, aging for most people brings along with it multiple issues. But its not all doom and gloom and here is the good news! You CAN age gracefully, if you follow some simple tips and maintain self discipline. For those of you who are thinking that its too late to create a healthy lifestyle for yourself, and I should have done it a long time ago, it reminds me of an old Chinese proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is now”. In other words, its never too late to take control of your life. Now let’s look at some of the factors that affect us later in life. WEIGHT GAIN A natural state of aging is losing muscle, and metabolism slows down. As you become less active, there is a tendency to gain weight. As well, your body burns fewer calories for the same physical activities as when you were younger. You don’t need a medical background to realize that being overweight raises you chance of conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. But the extra pounds can pose an even bigger burden for older people. Everyday movements like walking and getting out of chairs get harder. Therefore, it should come as no surprise, that obesity and arthritis go hand in hand. So, whether your 20 or 80, exercise is one way to fight weight gain. You will find plenty of guidelines that stipulate working out 30-60 minutes a day are fine for younger adults. But that might not be realistic for many older folks. This is where a good personal trainer comes

10

SEPTEMBER 2021

into the picture; You can devise an exercise plan matched to your health and fitness level. Its never too late to start! Even simple muscle-toning exercises can help you stay fit and mobile. Let’s look at some of the factors which cause weight gain. LACK OF SLEEP There are two primary points of concerns with sleep and weight gain. First, if you are constantly up late (night shift), there is a greater chance that you will be doing some late-night snacking, which naturally equates to more calories. More importantly, however, lets understand the internal chemistry of your body when you are sleep deprived; it means changes in hormone levels, which means an increase in

appetite.

healthy and strong).

STRESS

Usually, all you need is any multivitamin that offers the minimum daily requirement. You also don’t need huge doses. In fact, they can be harmful. If you’re taking any prescription medications, let your doctor know which supplements you take so you can avoid any bad interactions.

When life’s demands get too intense, our bodies go into survival mode. Cortisol, the “stress hormone,” is secreted, which causes an increase in appetite. Naturally, we may reach for high-calorie comfort foods, such as cakes, chips, cookies and ice cream, in times of stress as well. This combination creates ideal conditions for weight gain. Most women do gain some weight around the time of menopause, but hormones probably aren’t the only cause. As mentioned previously, aging slows your metabolism, so you burn fewer calories. And changes in lifestyle (such as exercising less) play a role. But where you gain weight may be related to menopause, with fat accumulating around your waist more than your hips and thighs. NUTRITIONAL PROBLEMS Our nutritional needs change as we age. Many of us don’t eat as well. Plus, older bodies can more easily lack certain vitamins and nutrients. These include vitamin B12 (we don’t absorb it from foods as well); calcium (we need more as we age); vitamin D (our skin doesn’t soak it up as well from the sun); and vitamin B6 (we need it to keep red blood cells

THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE FRAGILE BONES Many seniors fear falling. As you get older, it can affect your balance and make you less steady and sure on your feet. Falls can be especially dangerous if you have osteoporosis, when your bones become less dense and more susceptible to breaks and fractures. Almost everyone gets it to some degree if they live long enough, but women ages 50 and older are twice more likely than their male counterparts to break a bone because of this “brittle bone disease.” You can keep your bones stronger if you: 4 Eat lots of fruits, veggies, and foods high in calcium. 4 Take vitamin D. Older bodies absorb less of it from the sun. 4 Lift weights or do exercises that use your own body weight (walking, push-ups, squats). www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Dehydration is the lack of water in the body, which contributes to feeling symptoms of fatigue. It is important to have a daily minimum consumption of 3-4Litres of water as water is essential for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. CARBOHYDRATES Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy we

can obtain. Carbohydrates, when ingested, are further broken down to produce energy that we use as fuel to carry out metabolic functions. inger Camila Cabello labels her relationship with singer Shawn Mendes as built on “sweetness and tenderness”. She says she is lucky to have a “nurturing partner” like him. “I probably have a nurturing attitude because I also like being nurtured. I’m lucky that my partner is the same way. There’s a lot of sweetness and tenderness,” Cabello said, reports femalefirst.co.uk. She added: “I think we’re both sensitive. I’m really lucky to be able to surround myself with tenderness; it’s really important to me.” The couple keep each other grounded and are always on hand to help each other through rough patches with their mental health. She added: “(He) would tell me like, ‘Dang, I have these kinds of thoughts or whatever.’ I think that him talking about it has been a really big step in transforming that relationship with his body. I certainly feel obsessive, (like) I need to go to the gym, I need to do this, I need to lose weight quickly. I’ve felt like that. That’s the societal voice in your head.” Cabello has encountered her own struggle with body image, and addressed her critics in a TikTok video. Now, the ‘Senorita’ crooner said that posting the video was “so liberating”. Speaking to Bustle magazine, she said: “I actually felt so liberated when I posted that. After that, I went to the airport and so many women were coming up to me like, ‘I saw that TikTok and it resonated with me so much.’” She added: “I actually feel my body insecurities went down after I posted that because I was like, ‘No matter what pictures come out or what people say, I’m now controlling the narrative.’” Source: IANS

odern lifestyle and increasing dependency on the use of frozen and fast foods, plus the use of preservatives to keep foods fresh may be adversely affecting the health of people. The busy schedules leave us very little free time to look after our health. Whole family works to make the ends meet and after a hard day’s work there is hardly any enthusiasm to cook fresh food at home. Even if we do, we rely on the freshness of foods available from our grocery stores that may be as a result of preservatives or genetic modification. This is probably why we are seeing more and more of us ending up in hospitals with some hard to cure diseases, resulting in financial difficulties. Statistics (from Heart and Stroke foundation Canada) show that heart failure in on the rise. 50,000 Canadians are diagnosed with heart failure each year and 600,000 are living with it. And according to Canadian Cancer Society statistics, nearly 1 in 2 Canadians is expected to get cancer. These are just 2 of many critical diseases that make us think about their impact on us and our loved ones when faced. Insurance industry amongst many different kinds of insurances, offers Critical illness insurance plans that can help people cope up with the hardships faced by people in such instances. Critical Illness Insurance Critical Illness Insurance is insurance protection that guarantees a payment of a tax-free lump sum benefit in case the insured suffers from a critical illness. This benefit may be used to pay for insured’s treatment, pay regular bills and help his/her loved ones who may have to take time off their work for looking after the insured. Eligibility Criteria The insured must survive for 30 days after the diagnosis of critical illness. This period can increase up to a maximum of 180 days in certain cases. Critical illness should be www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

diagnosed by your family physician. The insured own declaration does not constitute a valid claim. Based on physician’s certification/ statement and supporting medical record, the insurance company pays a lump sum payment depending on the coverage purchased. Positive features You can insure yourself for the benefit amount as per your own needs/priority/ circumstance and are not bound to spend the benefit amount entirely on your medical treatment. On the other hand, people having surplus sources of income feel that they have enough money to cover for their treatment during times of medical emergency. So, they don’t feel ‘the need’ to buy any insurance. But if they are insured, they would be able to leave their capital untouched for further growth instead of being drained away for medical treatment. Thus, by investing only a small fraction of your monthly income in critical insurance, you can save yourself during times of illness. You can call at

You can add features, as a Rider to policy, like ‘Return of premium on Death’, ‘Return of Premium on Expiry of Policy’ etc. You are the beneficiary for the Critical insurance but, you can nominate a beneficiary. However, you must name a beneficiary for ‘Return of premium on death’ rider. EXAMPLE: A 35-year old non-smoker female purchases critical illness coverage of $100,000 Plan Term-75 with, refund of premium on death and refund after 15 years riders. Under the policy, she will pay a monthly premium of $149.40 totalling to $1660.00 annually. In the duration of policy, if she makes a claim for an eligible critical illness, she will receive a cheque of the full face amount of $100,000. Any time after 15 years, she can apply for a full refund of premium paid to date. Unfortunately, if she dies after (say) 6 years of purchase of policy for any reason, her family will receive a full refund of paid premium amount of $9960. Thus, in all situations, the insured/claimant has nothing to lose. It is a ‘forced investment’ for the benefit of the insured. While the insured is protected from unfavourable financial effects arising from the insured illnesses, it is also a saving for future that can be used as he/ SEPTEMBER 2021

hether you want to make a lasting impression or seal an important deal -- Identify the intention behind the meeting in order to dress sharply for it. Depending on the clients you are going to meet, it’s also essential to look for any guidelines that might be set for the meeting’s dress code. In case there aren’t any guidelines, its best to tread cautiously and use your best judgment to dress appropriately. To help you get dressed for your next big business meeting, we have put together some really helpful and simple tips: 1- When in doubt, go for business casuals Business casuals are a combination of classic office formals, and trendy modern prints and designs. For women, business casuals include well-fitted chinos, knee length pencil skirts, tailored shirts, and of course a dapper blazer that hugs your shoulders nicely. 2- Find the perfect blouse The perfect blouse for a business meeting is the one which flatters your upper body, but at the same time isn’t too revealing. A silk blouse

or a close weave sweater would be the most apt for a business meeting. When you are buying a new blouse, go for rich hue patterns on silk or solid colours. 3- Make sure you aren’t exposing too much skin One of the biggest faux pas you can make while dressing for a business meeting is showing too much skin. You should avoid wearing sleeveless blouses and check the length of your skirt from all sides as well. Dressing inappropriately can be easily mistaken as a sign of unprofessional and incompetent behaviour. 4- Match your trousers with your jacket While it’s safest to wear a two-piece suit to a meeting, if you have bought trousers separately, then make sure its colour compliments the colour of the jacket you are going to wear. Bright or printed jackets go well with dark trouser. 5- Wear perfectly fitted clothes Whether you are wearing a formal suit or a complete business attire, it’s important to make sure that your clothes fit you perfectly. It can look rather inappropriate if your clothes are too tight on you. At the same time, lose clothes might make your colleagues think that you borrowed them from someone and didn’t want to put any effort into dressing for the meeting.

When you are buying business attire, make sure it suits your body shape. A suit is a perfect fit for you only when the trousers end right before the shoe line and the shoulders sit square. 6- Pay attention to details Just wearing a fitted suit is not enough, you also need to pay attention to details to make sure you look sharp as ever. The clothes you will be wearing should be clean, fresh, and well ironed. When you are getting ready, make sure to check for any creases, lose buttons, or stains. At the same time, your nails shouldn’t be too long or have any bright or funky nail paint. Instead go for lighter and nude shade nail polishes for a business meeting. 7- Your shoes can say a lot about you When it comes to shoes for a business meeting, comfort and confidence is everything. While a high heeled shoe may look a lot better, if it’s not

so comfortable that you can easily wear it for a few hours, then it’s best to replace them with a pair of classic low-heeled shoes. It is also not necessary for your shoes to be black. Just make sure to go for a subtle colour that matches with the rest of your outfit. 8- Your business attire is incomplete without the right hairstyle All the effort you take to create the perfect look for your business meeting can quickly go down the drain if you don’t pay attention to your hairs. Women should make sure their hairs are brushed and not unruly. It’s best to tie the hair up in a loose ponytail or bun. With these simple dressing tips, you will be able to ace your business meetings successfully. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Fashion trends that made comeback in 2021

F

ashion trends are forever changing. What is in trend today may be a complete no next year. Ashima Sharma, a fashion designer and founder of Ashima S Couture, shares some yesteryear trends that have been revisiting the fashion arena. She adds that the pandemic has made one comfortable with experimenting so try these styles out:

with a flowing skirt or jeans. The simple reason is that people rather wear a one or cold shoulder top in place of a half or full sleeve t-shirt to avoid rolling up their sleeves.

Bell Bottoms Bell bottoms are a trend from the ‘70s and ‘80s which have recently made a comeback. They exhibit a retro summer style for fashion divas. These trousers are ideal for those who want to make their legs look longer and slimmer. For a perfect office look, you can match it with a black or a neutral colour trousers with a white shirt and a short vest. Keep the blouse untucked for a casual look. For an everyday style, combine ethnic bell bottom pants with a boho top. Asymmetric Dresses or Asymmetrical silhouettes Nowadays the fresh asymmetrical trend is sweeping the fashion arena. experimenting with ways of wearing asymmetrical dresses. The rule of fashion is ‘not to follow’ the rules. One needs to play with colours and silhouettes to create a style. You can never go wrong with the classic one shoulder asymmetrical dress, which works from day to night. Cold shoulders Owing to the Covid-19 vaccination drive, the cold-shoulder is back with a bang. This entirely flattering and adaptable silhouette can be teamed

Animal prints always make a comeback with the latest fashion twist. Prints like leopard, zebra or even tiger are steadily taking the spotlight. Wearing animal prints is like experiencing the energy of exotic lands and their climates. Halter necks The 2000 trend is back in 2021 with a makeover. The strap around the neck now has a modern spin. The halter neck blouse usually works for every style and body type. If you’re into minimal fashion, then it is better to go for a neutrals or black. By: Puja Gupta

How to Prepare for Your First Job Interview

a new look. You need to look professional, sharp, and smart. Pick out formals with subtle colours and avoid dressing too casual. Also, you shouldn’t wear any loud colours or clashing patterns to ensure your clothes aren’t a distraction.

oing for your first job interview is like a right of passage -- Like the first day to school or college. It is understandable to be nervous about the whole ordeal. But the more prepared you are, the more confident you will feel during your interview.

Check for any stains or wrinkles before you go for the interview and keep accessories to the bare minimum. Personal grooming is just as necessary -- Get a sharp haircut and trim your nails. Even if the company you are interviewing for has a casual dress code, its still best to wear semicasuals like khakis and collared shirts.

To help you ace your first job interview, we have put together some helpful tips: 1- Get to know the company and the job

role Before you start preparing for

the interview, it’s important to do your homework to get a complete understanding of the company, its culture, and the job you are interviewing for. Start by researching about the company, its reputation online, and the key stakeholders. You should also get a clear understanding of the products and services that the company offers and its key target audience. After getting the scoop on the company, you need to research about the job itself -- The responsibilities, tasks, and duties that it entails. The experience and skills required by the ideal candidate should be your main focus. The more information you have, the more prepared you will be to answer questions and impress the interviewers. 2- Look the part For your first job interview, you need to look the part and show the interviewers that you truly fit into their company. It isn’t the time to experiment with

20

3- First impressions go a long way Imagine the poor impression made when a job candidate arrives late to an interview. To avoid this disaster, make sure you know exactly where the interview will take place. Also, you should have a good understanding of where to park. In general, show up about 15 minutes early for the interview. And if you can, do a practice run to the site of the interview so that you can get your timing down. When you go inside for the interview, speak clearly with confidence when you introduce yourself. Don’t forget to check your posture and make eye contact with the interviewer. At the end of the interview, shake the interviewer’s hand and thank them for giving you their valuable time. Let them know that they can contact you in case they have any additional questions. 4- Avoid weaknesses that are actually strengths Don’t be that person who lists their strengths as their weakness, like ‘I work too hard.’ The interviewers will see right through you. Instead, pick out a real weakness that you can easily address. It’s also advisable to modify your answer according to the job role you are interviewing for. Though, avoid being brutally honest and mentioning any major weaknesses like -- ‘I am often late to work.’ www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Men can ace their style with bracelets too! M en’s jewellery can be a tricky subject. While women can pull off a whole range of ornaments from bling to baubles, not all men feel comfortable donning more than a watch, a class ring, or some discreet earring.

There was a time when men used to shy away from the very idea of jewellery. Vikings wore jewellery. Kings wore jewellery. Pretty much every significant man in history wore silver and gold. However, in recent times, there has been an attitudinal change and men have embraced jewellery as well. If you still haven’t heard of the Salman Khan bracelet, you’ve been living under a rock. Jewellery is always about balance and this is for everyone. Don’t wear an oversized rock on your ear or a chain that’s thicker than your throat. The jewellery you wear should add to your confidence levels. You also need to decide what to wear when. If you work in a conservative office, don’t wear a dangling earring in one ear. Opt for a subtle chain or tie-bar instead. Tribal designs fit the bill and make a strong impression, as do geometric styles. In the world of fashion accessories for men, bracelets are gaining popularity. When blended with creativity, they ooze not only style but also meaning. Another great thing about this piece of accessory is that it can be teamed up with any outfit. Below are some suggestions by Ashish Vijay, Co-Founder and CFO -- Miorah. com: BEADED BRACELETS: These bracelets are simple, classy, and sophisticated. Comfort comes with simplicity and they can easily be paired up with casual and formal wear. Beads in bracelets can be according to one’s zodiac sign. bracelets. CHARM BRACELETS: A charm bracelet is extremely popular as it can be personalised. These bracelets signify a story or something related to the wearer’s life. Charmed bracelets can be paired with casual wear or some trendy formals to look your best. The reason why these are popular is that you can change your bracelet’s charms whenever you want to. It is easy to take them off and change the entire look. SILVER BRACELETS: Bracelets are made in all types of metals, but silver is a top pick, especially with men who wear them with religious belief. One can also engrave quotes by God or something personal on these bracelets. By: Puja Gupta

How to Build Trust in Friendships

rust is one of the most important foundational blocks of friendship. It allows us to open up to our friends and safely share our lives with them. At the same time, betrayal of trust can feel devastating in a friendship, or any relationship for that matter. When you betray a friend’s confidence by sharing something they told you in confidence, it can put a dent in your relationship with them. That is why, it’s important to be clear with your friends about what trust means to you, so that you are both on the same page.

There are several ways to build and demonstrate trust in a friendship, including: 1- Be more dependable

important social media update, it is still going to be there after your conversation with your friend is over. Also, resist from giving unnecessary advice unless you can really help your friend.

Instead of just being available to your friends on your own convenience, go out of your way to show them that you actually care for them and talk to them when they are going through a tough time.

4- Be considerate

2- Be kind Friends can make mistakes, give them some room for error and be kinder. If they change or cancel plans, call them up or text them to make sure that everything is alright at their end, instead of assuming that they are just ignoring you. If they say something which hurts you, be honest with them about it and let them know exactly why you felt hurt. 3- Be completely present When your friend is talking to you about something important, give them your full attention by putting your phone down and try not to interrupt them. If there is an

While it’s important to bring your walls down around your friends, sharing too much intimate information about your life in the early phases of your friendship can be rather overwhelming, for both you and your friend. Take one step at a time and move slowly instead of rushing into a new friendship. 5- Have integrity Show your friends that you are the type of person who can be trusted with private and intimate information. True friends never gossip behind each other’s backs. Even if it’s a small detail that your friend shared with you, do not discuss it with others unless you know your friend is alright with it. It’s best to talk to your friends about this and be clear about boundaries. You should know

what is to be shared and what shouldn’t be shared in order to strengthen and maintain your friendship. 6- Be interdependent Trusting friends are able to ask each for help even when they are vulnerable, desperate, or scared. Open yourself up more to your friends, it will also help them to open themselves up to you as well and reach out to you when they are facing a problem. 7- Be reciprocative Friendships can often go sour if one person is always on the receiving end of things. You need to be more reciprocative in friendships and respect each other mutually. For instance, if a friend takes a day off to spend time with you and invite you to their house, you should do the same for them as well. By following all these simple tips, you will be able to build trust in friendships and have friends who stay by your side through the thick and thin.

Here’s what you need to know about Salmonellosis in dogs

I

n this month’s article we will be discussing a canine infection known as Salmonellosis. Not only is this a contagious infection amongst dogs but

it is also known as a zoonotic bacterial disease, which means that dogs can also transmit it to their human owners as well. Salmonellosis can infect both

canines and felines; however, in this month’s article, we will only be discussing its effects on dogs. In canines, it can lead to more serious conditions, such as septicemia, gastroenteritis and even abortion. Clinical disease is characterized by two main conditions: enteritis and systemic septicemia (typhoid). There are various types of Salmonella based bacteria. In fact, there are over 2000 different strains. Dogs who are very young of age or have compromised immune systems are at most risk from this disease. The most common route of transmission is fecal-oral. Providing your dog with a diet consisting of undercooked meat or raw meat is one of the most common ways for your pet to contract this disease. In most cases, dogs and cats are both known as asymptomatic carriers of this bacterial disease. This means that they do not often show symptoms of being infected. Yet, if symptoms are present, then as an owner, you would most likely see diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, weight loss, fever, shock, dehydration and lethargy. Less commonly, you may also see mucus in the stool, fast heart rate, skin disease or abortion. If any of the symptoms listed above are seen in your furry companion, it is highly advised that you take your pet to the nearest veterinarian as soon as possible. If your veterinarian feels this

26

SEPTEMBER 2021

may be a case of Salmonellosis, then he or she may conduct a few simple tests to rule out any other questionable conditions. This will aid in determining if the Salmonella spp. bacteria is present. Generally, dogs may not show any symptoms, but gastroenteritis can be seen at times. A complete blood count, biochemistry panel and blood culture can help narrow the disease your dog is experiencing. A urine sample and fecal sample may also be collected. Once diagnosed officially as Salmonellosis, your dog will be primarily treated for the main conditions it presents. These conditions would be dehydration, blood infection, sepsis, etc. There are a selective number of antimicrobials available that can be prescribed to your pet if considered fit. To prevent this condition, it is crucial to pay attention to maintaining good hygiene for your pet and its living environment. A well-balanced diet with proper nutrients is also very important. Overcrowded locations such as animal pounds and shelters should also be avoided, since they can provide for a higher risk spread of most diseases.

Create your own meditation corner at home

T

oday more people are aware of their anxieties and are open to conversations around mental health. They genuinely want to lead a better and more meaningful life. Practising mindfulness and meditation have gained popularity in recent times, so it is essential to set up the perfect corner for it in your home. Keyur Zaveri, Sr Director of Design, Furlenco share some ways to help you create your own peaceful meditation area, where you can set aside some time for yourself every day:

Choose your spot Pick an area in your house that is away from ambient noise or disturbances from other appliances, such as your TV or workstation. You can dedicate a whole room to this, or select a cosy corner where you can sit or lie down with ease.

Create a vibe Get rid of any mess that’s currently in your spot and find a place to put everything away. Creating a personal vibe for your meditation spot helps you distinguish this area as yours and yours alone. Once you start practising this, it becomes easier for you to maintain the sanctity of the space and not use it for anything else. A sleek diwan, with ample in-built storage and a display unit that you can adorn with plants, books, and other decor elements, is one such piece of furniture ideal for this setup. Get it on rent and this experience of setting up the space becomes even more stress-free. All you have to do is pick the ideal product, pay a nominal rent, and use it for as long as you want.

Make it comfortable Certain elements add a special touch to your chosen corner and

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

remind you what purpose it serves. Add comfortable cushions and rugs for you to sit or lie down when practising breathing exercises. You can either roll up the rug and tuck it away with the cushions once you’re done, or leave the arrangement as is. A compact sofa-cum bed could be a perfect solution to do so while enjoying the flexibility to move things around. Use it anyway it works for you - like a bed, a sofa, or just floor seating.

Listening to the sounds of nature, such as running water or birds chirping, may also help. And these are just some of the ways you can get started on the journey to creating a

safe haven for yourself - the kind you want to rush to at the end of a long and tiring day. By: N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Include sounds and fragrances The most tried and tested method of practising mindfulness is to become aware of the sights, smells and sounds in your immediate surroundings. You can add potted plants, dreamcatchers, crystals, beads, or even calming artwork if it helps make the space more inviting. Light a few scented candles and play soothing music while you meditate.

or prescription creams to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Anti-aging products might contain ingredients like retinol, alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHA and BHA), and vitamins A and C. These ingredients help eliminate dead cells and boost skin regeneration, so you can enjoy a smoother texture.

rom the last decade, the beauty industry has witnessed a boom in anti-ageing and wrinkleremoval solutions. Many new products and procedures emerge daily to cater to the rising needs of “looking picture perfect” among millennials. The blue light from screen time, unhealthy eating practices and ineffective lifestyle choices make our skin and overall health suffer, thereby ageing us in the process. Therefore, it becomes essential to start an anti-aging regimen even after you’ve started showing signs of fine lines and wrinkles. When should you start anti-ageing treatment?

Ageing skin is often characterised by dullness, sagging and wrinkled skin. Profhilo, a new skin bio-remodelling procedure, is a remarkable way of giving mature and ageing skin a new lease of life. Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid-based skin procedure that works to galvanise the skin’s ability to generate collagen and elastin -- the two scaffolding proteins critical to skin’s firmness and elasticity. Hyaluronic acid is a hydrophilic substance found naturally in the skin, the presence of which is critical to the health of the skin’s extracellular matrix and its ability to hold on to moisture. As we age, our skin loses its natural reserves of hyaluronic acid resulting in dull, dry and lax skin. There is endless information on the internet about the anti-ageing skin care. According to the beauty experts, one should start the antiageing skin treatment in their late 20’s or early 30’s to push off wrinkles as long as possible. One should

keep in mind that wrinkle-removal products delay more wrinkles from showing up, but it won’t make the ones that are already there disappear. So, the earlier you start, the more protection you will get in delaying the ageing process What Should an Anti-

Aging Skin Care Routine Look like? One should start working with the dermatologist or beauty expert to build an effective anti-aging skin care routine depending upon your own beauty goals. The skin professional will first assess your problem areas and make recommendations based on your unique needs. Your custom regimen might include following products and procedures: Sun Protection: Protecting from the harmful UV rays of the sun is the first line of defense in slowing down the aging process. The most important reason for wrinkles and dark spots on the skin in your 20’s and 30’s is due to the excessive sun exposure. You should immediately consult your dermatologist about skin care for sun damage, which can include treatments like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser therapy, and retinoids. Topical Creams: Your dermatologist may recommend over-the-counter

Laser Treatments: Laser treatments actually stimulate the skin’s natural production of new skin cells and collagen. The treatment also helps individuals in reducing the age spots, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines following this treatment besides increasing the production of skin cells and collagen. Your skincare specialist will be able to guide you on how many treatments you’ll need to achieve the best possible results. Dermal Fillers: With age and loss of collagen, our overall facial volume decreases. This is where dermal fillers come into play to restore this volume. The skincare specialist will go for dermal fillers to fill in wrinkles, where it appears the most, including around the mouth and under your eyes. It also helps in increasing the cheek volume. Dermal fillers generally last between six months and a year. Microdermabrasion: This procedure can be another effective wrinkle treatment and can also address melasma, age spots, and sun damage. In this treatment procedure, your skincare specialist will use an instrument to spray fine particles of a chemical substance onto your skin. This will enable the skin to regenerate, which can fade some signs of aging. By: Jaishree Sharad

A Girl in a Whirl

My mom’s demise I got a phone call from my dad that mom’s sugar was very high. I had asked her to take care of her diet but she never did so. She had to be hospitalized. My mom was serious. Doctor told me that mom’s both kidneys had failed. Learning that, I burst out crying. I had only miseries and miseries in my life. My problems had put her in such bad shape. Just a few days of happiness I had, another storm of troubles was there to lash my life. I asked my mom-inlaw to get my air-ticket booked for India. I couldn’t sleep all night, just kept crying and crying. I called Marvelous College to ask why I was unable to attend my classes. I left Canada and reached India. Dad told me that mom’s vital organs were failing one-by-

Our premonition came true. The next morning, mom left all of us for heavenly abode around 11 A.M. I couldn’t have even a few words with my mom. I was badly deserted. My mom’s dead face was flashing before my eyes again and again. “O’ my sis! Where will I see you now? Your children need you so much yet. You hadn’t seen any happiness yet. You left your whole family in the darkness. Why did you do so? You didn’t have mercy on your children at all!”, our mom’s second or third cousin made us cry a lot with her mourning. Many close and far- relatives kept visiting us to express their grief over our mom’s death. I had lost not only my closest friend, but also a part of my soul. ‘Bell Bottom’: A brilliant narrative with great performances

Duration: 123 minutes Director: Ranjit M. Tewari Cast: Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, Huma Qureshi and Lara Dutta Rating: ***1/2

everything when duty calls. He is in top form looking slick and suave in his retro look and for the most part holds the movie with his acting skills. He does justice to the character he plays. The bond between the mother and son is sweet.

‘Bell Bottom’ features Akshay Kumar as a RAW agent, who pulls off the impossible mission of recapturing a hijacked plane and landing it safely on Indian soil with all the passengers alive, without any bloodshed. It is slick and stylish all along. The Akshay Kumar character, Anshul, is driven not only by the call of duty, but also because of a personal loss. His mother, an asthma patient, played by Dolly Ahluwalia, had died when an Indian flight had been hijacked by the Pakistanis. She had lost her life because she’d been denied life-saving oxygen by the hijackers. Akshay Kumar’s character therefore is focused, determined and goal oriented. The film stars Vaani Kapoor as the

36

SEPTEMBER 2021

leading lady (Akshay Kumar’s wife). Her character has an amazing twist to her, which is revealed much later in the story. Lara Dutta plays Indira Gandhi and Huma Qureshi, a special agent working for the Dubai government. Akshay Kumar has nailed the look and nuances of a special agent, who lives a normal life but drops

Vaani Kapoor has a sweet but impactful role. She excels in playing a good-humoured character and looks stunning and brings a lot of freshness when on-screen. For Lara Dutta, this could be a career-defining role. She looks so much like Gandhi and excels in her performance. Huma Qureshi, especially when her real identity is revealed, will definitely blow you away. The narrative is gripping and every character comes with a back story or sudden twist, so the audience doesn’t lose interest. The massive scale of the movie is outstanding; the makers (Pooja Entertainment) have not shied

away from spending to make it larger than life and for achieving this in the middle of the pandemic is commendable. The editing in the first half could have been crisper, but the second half is so smooth and pacy that you wouldn’t know when the film ends. The special effects (VFX) could have been better. The movie was shot in Scotland, but never once do you feel any liberties were taken with the narrative’s authenticity. The production designer who recreated the 1980s deserves special mention. The songs are few but wellplaced. The ones that stood out were the gurudwara song ‘Khair Mangdi’ and the title track ‘Dhoom Taraa’, which just stays with you much after you leave the theatre. ‘Bell Bottom’ is a must-watch on the big screen.

Should you switch to ammonia-free hair colour?

A

it is important to know how these hair colours carry out the task of colours penetrating the cuticles of the hair fibre, moreover, it is important to check whether the alternative discovered is organic or not. When we developed our all-natural hair henna cream, we opted for Aminomethyl Propanol, which is an organic compound in a colourless liquid form. The ingredient suits the ethos of developing products with consciousness for all living beings.

wise man once said, “Gray hair is mandatory, we get it from our children”, the other option is, we can bid adieu to it if we want. There are many who prefer to don the salt and pepper or silver look but there are still those who do not shy away from using hair colour, not just to hide the greys, but to make a style statement. Clelia Cecilia Angelon, Founder and CEO, Surya Brasil, suggests why you should switch to ammonia-free hair colour. Role of Ammonia An alkaline chemical by nature, Ammonia has traditionally been added to various hair dyes to raise the pH level of the hair during the colouring process. As the pH level spikes, the cuticles of the hair fibre open up, letting the colour penetrate deeper into the cortex, which is the inner part of the hair. The natural pigment of the hair can also be lightened using Ammonia, making it fit for re-colouring. There is no proof of Ammonia disrupting our hormones or increasing cancer risks, but it has been found to cause conditions like throat, nose and eyes irritation, breathing difficulty, burns and even

38

SEPTEMBER 2021

pulmonary edema. Ammonia is widely considered moderately toxic as against more harmful chemicals and toxins. Usage and Subproducts Ammonia has even traditionally been used only in hair colours that categorise themselves as permanent hair colours, as the semi-permanent ones do not need to reach the cortex region. These colours merely provide a coating to the hair, hence they are considered less harmful on hair, scalp and skin.

Ethanolamine, Diethanolamine and Triethanolamine are chemical compounds that are often present in hair colours that claim to be Ammonia-free. The reality, however, is that these are sub-products of Ammonia and more harmful than compounds consisting of nitrogen and hydrogen Why Ammonia-Free The aforementioned facts are pretty much self-explanatory as to why one should immediately switch to ammonia-free hair colour. But

Some hair dyes contain monoethanolamine that comprises an alcohol. To ensure that is less harmful to the hair, it is added in less concentrated form and also combined with emollient oils. Hence, there is no qualm in saying that even traditionally ammonia has solved a great purpose pertaining to hair colour, allowing them to reach as deep as necessary, in the present times one should go for organic alternatives available readily in the market. While doing so would save the hair, scalp and skin from intense harm, it will add to a sustainable regimen in your personal care. By: N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

All you need to know about heart diseases Diagnosis

4 Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG): An ECG is a quick and painless test that records the electrical signals in your heart. It can spot abnormal heart rhythms. You may have an ECG while you’re at rest or while exercising (stress electrocardiogram).

Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

Risk factors Risk factors for developing heart disease include: 4 Age: Growing older increases your risk of damaged and narrowed arteries and a weakened or thickened heart muscle. 4 Sex: Men are generally at greater risk of heart disease. The risk for women increases after menopause. 4 Family history: A family history of heart disease increases your risk of coronary artery disease, especially if a parent developed it at an early age (before age 55 for a male relative, such as your brother or father, and 65 for a female relative, such as your mother or sister). 4 Smoking: Nicotine tightens your blood vessels, and carbon monoxide can damage their inner lining, making them more susceptible to atherosclerosis. Heart attacks are more common in smokers than in nonsmokers. 4 Poor diet: A diet that’s high in fat, salt, sugar and cholesterol can contribute to the development of heart disease. 4 High blood pressure: Uncontrolled high blood pressure can result in hardening and thickening of your arteries, narrowing the vessels through which blood flows. 4 High blood cholesterol levels: High levels of cholesterol in your blood can increase the risk of plaque formation and atherosclerosis. 4 Diabetes: Diabetes increases your risk of heart disease. Both conditions share similar risk factors, such as obesity and high blood pressure. 4 Obesity: Excess weight typically worsens other heart disease risk factors. 4 Physical inactivity: Lack of exercise also is associated with

42

SEPTEMBER 2021

many forms of heart disease and some of its other risk factors as well. 4 Stress: Unrelieved stress may damage your arteries and worsen other risk factors for heart disease. 4 Poor dental health: It’s important to brush and floss your teeth and gums often, and have regular dental checkups. If your teeth and gums aren’t healthy, germs can enter your bloodstream and travel to your heart, causing endocarditis. Complications Complications of heart disease include: 4 Heart failure: One of the most common complications of heart disease, heart failure occurs when your heart can’t pump enough blood to meet your body’s needs. Heart failure can result from many forms of heart disease, including heart defects, cardiovascular disease, valvular heart disease, heart infections or cardiomyopathy. 4 Heart attack: A blood clot blocking the blood flow through a blood vessel that feeds the heart causes a heart attack, possibly damaging or destroying a part of the heart muscle. Atherosclerosis can cause a heart attack. 4 Stroke: The risk factors that lead to cardiovascular disease can also lead to an ischemic stroke, which happens when the arteries to your brain are narrowed or blocked so that too little blood reaches your brain. A stroke is a medical emergency — brain tissue

begins to die within just a few minutes of a stroke. 4 Aneurysm: A serious complication that can occur anywhere in your body, an aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of your artery. If an aneurysm bursts, you may face lifethreatening internal bleeding. 4 Peripheral artery disease: When you develop peripheral artery disease, your extremities — usually your legs — don’t receive enough blood flow. This causes symptoms, most notably leg pain when walking (claudication). Atherosclerosis also can lead to peripheral artery disease. 4 Sudden cardiac arrest: Sudden cardiac arrest is the sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness, often caused by an arrhythmia. Sudden cardiac arrest is a medical emergency. If not treated immediately, it results in sudden cardiac death. Prevention Certain types of heart disease, such as heart defects, can’t be prevented. However, the same lifestyle changes that can improve your heart disease can help you prevent it, including: 4Don’t smoke. 4 Control other health conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. 4 Exercise at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week. 4 Eat a diet that’s low in salt and saturated fat. 4Maintain a healthy weight. 4Reduce and manage stress. 4Practice good hygiene.

4 Holter monitoring: A Holter monitor is a portable ECG device you wear to continuously record your heart rhythm, usually for 24 to 72 hours. Holter monitoring is used to detect heart rhythm problems that aren’t found during a regular ECG exam. 4 Echocardiogram: This noninvasive exam uses sound waves to produce detailed images of your heart’s structure. It shows how your heart beats and pumps blood. 4 Stress test: This type of test involves raising your heart rate with exercise or medicine while performing heart tests and imaging to check how your heart responds. 4 Cardiac catheterization: In this test, a short tube (sheath) is inserted into a vein or artery in your leg (groin) or arm. A hollow, flexible and longer tube (guide catheter) is then inserted into the sheath. Using X-ray images on a monitor as a guide, your doctor carefully threads the catheter through the artery until it reaches your heart.
During cardiac catheterization, the pressures in your heart chambers can be measured, and dye can be injected. The dye can be seen on an X-ray, which helps your doctor see the blood flow through your heart, blood vessels and valves to check for problems. 4 Cardiac computerized tomography (CT) scan: In a cardiac CT scan, you lie on a table inside a doughnut-shaped machine. An X-ray tube inside the machine rotates around your body and collects images of your heart and chest. 4 Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): A cardiac MRI uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed images of your heart. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
