T First ever memorial to

celebrate and honour farmworkers unveiled in Abbotsford

he Golden Tree Monument honoring the lives of three farm workers who were killed in an accident in 2007 was unveiled in Abbotsford last month.

Mr. Charan Gill, PICS CEO along with Mr. Gurpreet Pabla, (PICS legal advocacy program) who have been an integral part of the conceptualization and building of the monument were present at the unveiling ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Gill said that the tree will forever be a reminder for everyone that we as a society need to continue to lobby for basic human rights of farm workers and also to constantly review the progress we’ve made for better working conditions for farm workers in BC. “When the news of the death of the three farmworkers came in, it not only deeply saddened me but also

made me angry that despite years of advocating for the rights of farm workers, precious lives were still being lost,” said Mr. Gill.

Mr. Gill also recognized Raj Chauhan, Sarwan Boal, Judy Cavanagh and Harinder Mahil who in 1976 had started the farmworkers movement and thanked BC Federation of Labour who worked tirelessly to build this beautiful monument.

Mr. Gill also expressed his gratitude towards the families of the victims who despite the tragedy in their lives gave the committee the courage to carry on the work and not rest till the goals were met.

The Golden Tree monument is designed by local artist Dean and Christina Lauzé, stands as a legacy to Amarjit Kaur Bal (52), Sukhvinder Kaur Punia (41), and Sarbjit Kaur Sidhu (31), the three women who were killed in 2007.

Salman Khan receives 10,000 love letters from fans

alk of fan frenzy, and this one will be a tough task to repeat. Salman Khan, who was recently in Ahmedabad to promote his upcoming film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, was gifted 10,000 ‘love letters’ from his fans from all over the city.

Salman was attending a navratri get-together in Ahmedabad and just when it was time for him to leave, a kid approached him with a huge red box, containing the letters. A source close to the star said, “Salman was

pleasantly surprised by the gesture and thanked the audiences for showering him with so much love.

At home too in Mumbai, the post office in Bandra near his house is flooded with sacks full of letters for Salman.”

Salman will soon be seen as Prem in Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, opposite Sonam Kapoor. The film brings back the hit duo of Sooraj-Salman, after a gap of 16 years. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is slated to release on 12 November

Why is there a surge of

children needing braces?

Have you ever heard the following: Why do kids these days need braces, we never had any problems?

his by far is the most common question that a parent asks during an orthodontic visit at Aura Orthodontics. It is usually followed by “If I have good teeth, what happened to my children?”

Let me just preface this by saying the answer is not straight forward because there are several factors that determine how our teeth look and why braces are needed. The following will explain some of those different factors and the roles they play in answering this question.

Let’s begin with the nature versus nurture debate. The nature part of this discussion is our genetics that we receive from our parents and the nurture part is the environment that we are brought up in. For genetics, a large part of the way we look, including our teeth is determined by our parents – regardless of what the problem is - if our parents had crooked teeth, an overbite, an underbite, spacing or crowding – then we will most likely have the same problem. If our parents don’t have any of these problems, then neither should we, right? Not necessarily…

This is where the nurture part of the discussion comes into play. When I say environment, I don’t mean the trees, the land or the w e a t h e r.

I am talking

about the factors that we expose our teeth to on a daily basis – the oral environment. For example, our dietary habits, which include sugary foods like candy and soda, our brushing habits, and fluoridated water to name a few of the important ones.

In some areas of the world, people have fluoridated drinking water - which means fluoride is put into their water.

At very low levels, fluoride has been proven to help prevent cavities. When we don’t have fluoride in our water (like in Vancouver, Surrey, Delta or Abbotsford) – this preventative effect is not there. Additionally, many children these days are exposed to a diet high in refined sugar, with lots of sticky foods. These sticky sugars constantly ‘attack’ the baby teeth and create large cavities. This poor diet, in combination with poor brushing habits and low fluoridation can lead to large cavities, which then require big fillings or an early removal of baby teeth.

Baby teeth are important for many reasons – one of which is holding space for our adult teeth. When baby teeth are lost early, the adult teeth lose their ‘guide’ and they erupt into the mouth in a variety of different positions. The bad news is that this is one of the main reasons we see crowding in our kids today – because of early loss of baby teeth. The good news is that this problem is easily prevented with less sugar and better brushing. When baby teeth are lost early – it is very important to see your orthodontist to maintain space for adult teeth. This is why at Aura Orthodontics, we recommend that a child’s first screening be completed by age seven.

On another note, if you look back by 40 or 50 years – how many people had braces? The obvious answer is not that many. Next ask yourself, how many of your grandparents have dentures?–Is it accurate to say that probably quite a few. Braces do not necessarily prevent dentures.

However, it has been proven that orthodontically straightened teeth have a much better

chance of lasting a patient’s life.

Straighter teeth have several benefits that allow us to maintain them for the long term. For example, they are easier to clean, which helps to prevent cavities. Additionally, straight teeth can help maintain bone support.

If teeth are crooked, biting causes an unhealthy transfer of force to the bone.

In fact, the teeth and bone have a very close relationship, similar to that of a fencepost and the ground. Imagine a fencepost in the ground. If you hit the fencepost on its side with a hammer ten times a day, eventually the fencepost will tilt over and fall. Also, the ground that was supporting the fencepost will be soft and become weakened.

The same is true with crooked teeth the bone will become weakened after years of unhealthy forces and teeth can become loose. Oppositely, if you hit the fencepost on its top, it will not damage the post or the ground. The same is true for straight teeth when they transfer healthy forces to the bone. Overall, for this reason straighter teeth tend to last longer.

Today, braces are far more socially accepted than they were in the past.

Again, think back to 20 to 30 years ago and imagine how many people had braces. The fact is that it was not that common back then. With recent advances in technology, treatment is much easier – smaller braces, clear braces, Invisalign and other totally clear options. And as a result, braces are becoming more and more common.

This is true for both children and adults.

Additionally, more kids these days receive orthodontic treatment because it is becoming less socially acceptable to have crooked teeth.

Unfortunately we see this all too often at Aura Orthodontics where a young child is ashamed to smile because of their teeth. It is sad but true that in schools, on playgrounds, in offices and social circles people are

ridiculed for crooked teeth. Braces are simply becoming more accepted than crooked teeth because they are considered a pro-active approach to treating crooked teeth. This leads us to our last reason.

As individuals, we all want to achieve our highest potential. Reaching this level requires hard work, determination, confidence and selfesteem. We must perceive ourselves positively if we are to attain this level of accomplishment. As I have seen in my patients, the transformation from low self-esteem and confidence to high self-esteem and confidence after treatment – is priceless. To be able to smile without fear of ridicule, to be able to express oneself and to feel confident is important for children and adults alike. With braces becoming more widely accepted, it is what makes transformations like this possible.

To summarize all the points that we discussed; we are seeing braces more often these days for the following seven reasons: 1. Poor diet and brushing habits can lead to an early loss of baby teeth.

2. Most families delay the first orthodontic consultation until a child is in their teens, which is far too late. The first orthodontic screening should be completed by no later than age seven.

3. Orthodontically straightened teeth are much easier to maintain and therefore remain longer in the mouth. Overall, this adds to the list of benefits and reasons why one should pursue orthodontic treatment.

4. Socially, braces are more widely accepted than ever before. So much so, that in some instances, having braces is more acceptable than having crooked teeth.

5. New technology has improved the appearance of braces (i.e. smaller, more aesthetic, clear treatment options).

6. Orthodontic treatment has a positive effect on confidence, selfesteem, and personality development.

7. Straighter teeth are more aesthetically pleasing.

n ancient India the birth of a girl child was hailed as auspicious. An old Indian proverb lies down that a home without a daughter is like a body without soul. The coming of a daughter in the house was compared with the advent of Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and Saraswati, the Goddess of fine arts. The usual blessing of a father at the time of his daughter’s marriage was: “May you excel in learning and public speaking”. No ceremony was considered complete without presence of women. The belief was that “No home is complete without a woman.”

The situation, however drastically changed during the later years when India was subjected to frequently foreign invasions. The invaders brought along practices that made women suffer badly; infanticide and ‘Purdah’ became prevalent.

Sending a girl to school became risky. There was, therefore, a sudden decline in female literacy and the position of women in society.

The problem of female fetus is widespread in urban centers. With the help of new techniques it has become possible to determine the sex of the

unborn baby or the fetus, and if it is found to be a girl child then, this is followed by abortion. Clinics offering such services have come up in many countries despite of being illegal. There are severing laws against the misuse of parental diagnostic techniques, which are meant only for detecting abnormalities in the unborn infant. The doctors, however, violate this law. Not a single case has been filed so far under the law, which forbids such an unethical practice.

To day, the problem is quite widespread in the northern states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajastan. There

is the knot that ties the family together are pockets of Tamil Nadu where killing a girl child is practiced traditionally.

The tribes, the Toda, The Kallar and the Gounder, earlier lived in war zones are facing torture of army solider. They started to kill the girl child in order to keep the population of women down and thus save them from rape by invading armies. In Rajasthan also, a girl child is looked upon as a curse because her father has to lie low before the father of boy at the time of match finding.

Upon attaining puberty, a girl is considered to be a security risk, a

likely source of trouble for the family’s honor and reputation. Then there are economic reasons for her killing.

She is a liability for her parents from the cradle ceremony to the marriage.

There has been not let up in the dowry system, which breaks the back of the parents. In some communities there is a dirty superstition that is a daughter is killed, the next child will be a son. In China also, the eldest male child inherits the property look upon the male child as their protector and supporter in old age. This gender-bias leads to the killing of girl child.

The greatest tragedy is that women themselves permit the death of their daughters as mercy killing.

Imagine a world without women!

Doesn’t it seem horrific? A world without women would be lacking of some serious talent. The stage for the New York City Ballet would be bare.

Tennis rackets would just be lying on the court at the US Open. There would be less laughter, without actresses like Amy Poehler and Cameron Diaz.

Imagine your home without your mother, sister and daughters; wouldn’t life be incomplete without them? Who would you marry your sons to if there were no girls?

If you got the message, spread it as much as you can and make sure nothing as such is practiced around you.

n Wednesday, October 14, Kids Play organised an anti Drugs and Gangs Presentation at Taj Convention Centre with over 400 attendees. The audience varied from the age group of 10 to 25 years.

Kids Play along with Odd Squad Productions Society, a non-profit organisation which creates multimedia presentations to deliver a message across a large area made it clear through their presentation that if one considers indulging in this sort of negative behaviour, the consequences are frightening.

Their goal is to create awareness with the help of communication tools like the usage of graphic images, videos of people residing in the downtown east side and portraying present ruined lives of gang members due to crime and drug addiction etc.

“The success of our KidsPlay anti Gang and Drug Presentation is overwhelming.

We are truly grateful to the parents, teachers and coaches, who took out the time to bring these youth to a powerful and impactful presentation.

Words cannot express gratitude to the organizations which stood with KidsPlay in this collaborative venture”.

anjha Vehra is an international women’s association. Sanjha Vehra means a common courtyard and has been in operation since 2002. It began with a group of women who started a kitty party, which they decided to continue each month, but with a specific purpose.

Sanjha Vehra provides a safe and inviting place for South Asian women to gather together to exchange ideas and discuss issues relating to their participation in Canadian Society.

They continue to meet every month to discuss how to advance the purposes of the organization.

In 2005, the Sanjha Vehra began their annual fundraiser in support of raising funds to help researchers for breast cancer. Why breast cancer research?

Five of the founding members of the Sanjha Vehra Women’s Association were diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. Every year since then, the Association continues fundraising as a tribute to these survivors’ honour.

This fundraising event is always held in October.

Annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser

of the 11th Annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser held on Friday, October 23rd 2015 in Dhaliwal Banquet Hall.

The event turned out to be better than last year as most of the tickets were sold. The banquet hall was packed, and people were buzzing with excitement, moving from one end to other. The nametags on the tables helped with sitting arrangements. There were vendors at the one end selling saris, suits, jewelry and mehndi lady decorating young ladies palms and on the other end was the buffet table. The MC of the evening was Gurmeet Attwal, a great personality with multiple talents and very well known for her service for Mamta Foundation. The highlights of the event were performances by Bhangra group from Shane Punjab, a dance performance by Manu Hairan, Adityas Bollywood Dance School, Kohinoor Boys Bhangra, monolog presentation about mammogram by

Gulshan Perhar of Indo- Canadian Senior Centre and more.

There were door prizes for early birds and raffle tickets. All the participants got gifts from Millstream Natural Foods, Dhaliwal bakery and Manohar bakery.

Balwinder Hairan got an award for volunteer of the year because of her hard work and was presented by Sukhbir Mangat.

“Again, we wish to thank all our supporters, and everyone else who donated funds for this great cause.

We really appreciate your support and cooperation and thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.

Without our volunteers, we could not have achieved this. We hope to have same support again form everyone for our future fundraisers,” said the organisers.

By Dr. Hakam Bhullar TRIBUNAL RULING: BC Veterinary Organization Systematically Discriminated Against Indo-Canadian Vets VANCOUVER Indo-Canadian Veterinarians have faced the most extreme form of racism and prejudice at the hands of College of Veterinarians of BC (CVBC), formerly known as British Columbia Veterinary Medical Association (BCVMA), the very same organizations that is in place to govern them.

The provincial Liberal government from the days of Gordon Campbell and now Premier Christy Clark has stood by and supported the “discriminating” CVBC, despite mountains of evidence against the power structure of the CVBC. But in the face of great personal and financial hardships, including depression and hellish nightmares, Dr. Hakam Bhullar and his IndoCanadian Vets for Justice have finally won a huge vindication, a moral, spiritual and historical victory at the BC Human Rights Tribunal, which has ruled that the BCVMA-CVBC targeted the foreign trained doctors and ran a campaign to discredit them while standing by the biased members of their governing board.

“I note that none of those who engaged in making racedbased comments or relaying such comments were sanctioned for doing so. The BCVMA’s Code of Ethics is clear that members should not engage in race-based negative commentary about their colleagues.

Despite this clear provision, the BCVMA allowed such commentary to continue, thus suggesting that it believed such commentary or could reasonably be perceived as condoning such commentary, Tribunal Judge Judy Parrack wrote in her decision.

“I accept that the BCVMA took no steps to directly investigate the allegations after hearing these rumours by pursing its own disciplinary complaint. I find that it strains credulity to assume that such rumours had no adverse impact on its views of Dr. Bhullar and the other Complainants. Further, it was clear that the BCVMA relied on unsubstantiated rumour to create a list of those facilities that would be subject to unscheduled inspections, which were predominately those of the Complainant group, discussed below,” Parrack further ruled.

“I agree that Dr. Bhullar would have perceived the BCVMA as targeting him throughout this investigation and that it expended significant resources in doing so.”

The human rights decision came after the longest hearing in the

history of BC Human Rights, lasting 380 days and costing the Indo-Vets more than $1.5 million and the CVBC more than $7 million, is on its way, taking nearly three years alone for the decision after the last submissions were made by both sides in May 2012.

The case pitted Drs. Arminder Brar, Hakam Bhullar, Bhupinder Johar, Paramjeet Sidhu, Omparkashrkash Parbhakar, Dalbir Benipal, Tejpal S. Bhatia, Jogpreet S. Jagpal, Manjinder Hans, Prvitar Bajwa, Rameez Sharma, Naresh Kumar Joshi and Sarjit S. Grewal (Complainants) against the British Columbia Veterinary Medical Association and their former administrator Valerie Osborne.

The discriminated Vets were collectively awarded close to $300,000 by the Human Rights Tribunal. The Tribunal ruled that

“Race-based stereotypes played a role in BCVMA’s dealings with the Complainants, including negative generalized views about the credibility and ethics of IndoCanadians in relation to their veterinary practices. Persons of influence in the BCVMA held such views, and the BCVMA knew this or ought reasonably to have known this, but largely ignored and condoned the expression of such views. A poisoned relationship developed between the BCVMA and the Complainants, which the BCVMA blamed entirely on those individuals claiming they were “playing the race card”.

Here are some key findings of the tribunal: * I find that there was no credible evidence that Dr. Bhullar had control over the visas of the Indo-Canadian veterinarians that worked for him.

These veterinarians came to Canada as fully educated veterinarians and on the points system. Although English was their second language, they were able to obtain their CQs and, if they chose, were licensed in other provinces or in various states; *I find that Dr. Bhullar did not take advantage of his business partners. I find the allegations made

by Dr. H, which were unsubstantiated as Dr. Hans did not testify, to be based solely on his experience, which is unknown to me. It is true that Dr. Bhullar went into business with many Indo-Canadian veterinarians and sold his interest to his business partner for a profit. There is nothing inappropriate about this and in fact many would see this as an appropriate business model. In my view, making a profit does not equate with inappropriate business practices. If this were the case many institutions would be subject to the claim of inappropriate business activities; *In summary, I find that Dr. Ashburner made inappropriate

comments, some of which promoted stereotypes based on race, or comments that could reasonably be considered as such. The real issue, however, is the lack of action on the part of the BCVMA, which preferred to assume that Dr. Bhullar would have altered the Ashburner Recording and the Transcript(s) of it instead of conducting a proper investigation into its veracity and Dr. Ashburner’s conduct.

“This has been the most difficult and most damaging to me personally and professionally part of my life. geing is a natural phenomenon which everyone has to go through, but consuming dark chocolates or blueberries can help slow down the process with better results, says an expert.

A list of five super foods that can actually make a difference to our body system.

Olive oil: It is a good source of MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acids) and omega 3. A serving of olive oil will give you the daily dose of healthy fats. Cooking in olive oil damages the structure of olive oil and it converts it into a saturated fat. Olive oil is also excellent source of polyphenols which are strong antioxidants which are needed to balance the free radicals.

Broccoli: Broccoli is a good

source of Vitamin C and also dietary fibers.

It belongs to the edible green plant in the cabbage family. It is rich in beta-carotene and selenium. These ingredients make it a perfect super food.

Dark chocolate: Dark chocolate with high cocoa content can actually be very beneficial. It contains minerals like iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium. It is also an excellent source of antioxidants, which will help us prevent the damage done by free radicals. Cocoa beans, from which chocolate is made, have a higher antioxidant capacity than any other food, and the high concentration of antioxidant flavanols in cocoa beans helps reduce inflammation of the skin caused by exposure to UV light.

Yogurt: It is an excellent source of protein and calcium. It helps us to prevent from muscle and bone loss.

Also it provides us with billions of good bacteria in our stomach. These bacteria help us to break down our food and also help us to get rid of

toxins. Make sure to have at least two servings of yoghurt, for best results take it at room temperature.

Red wine: Red wine if taken in moderation is an excellent anti-ageing drink. Red wine contains a compound called resveratrol, which contributes to a lot of health benefit. White wine doesn’t have as much resveratrol as red wine because resveratrol is found primarily in the grape skins. Some researches have shown red wine to slow down the cellular ageing.

If taken in moderation it is really helpful. The antioxidants and nutrients in red wine can help prevent heart disease by protecting the arteries and the lining of blood vessels. Males can have two glasses of wine per week and females can have one glass wine per week.

new study has revealed that family dinners, which are good for teenagers’ mental health, can also protect them from cyberbullying. Frank J Elgar, PhD, of a McGill University, Canada, and his colleagues measured five internalizing problems (anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicide ideation and suicide attempt), two externalizing problems (fighting and vandalism) and four substance use problems (frequent alcohol use, binge drinking, prescription drug misuse and over-the-counter drug misuse).

It was found that nearly 19% students reported

they had experienced cyberbullying in the previous 12 months. Cyberbullying was associated with all 11 of the internalizing, externalizing and substance use problems.

But family dinners appeared to moderate the relationship between cyberbullying

and the mental health and substance use problems.

With at least four family dinners per week, there was a four-fold difference in the rates of total problems between no cyberbullying victimization and frequent victimization.

y Joy knows no bounds, as I came to know that a new restaurant captioned above has come up --for foodie’s denizens of Surrey and its hinterland -who have an ardent/ refined interest in Indian cuisine as a priority.

As I was tearing down the road in my automobile to attend the opening ceremony on October 11, the name Sapphire - a precious gem -flashed into my mind. Wow, an entirely different name to tickle the taste buds of our community.

As I approached the dim musical entrance with feeling of glowing generality, I found the 6600 sq. feet sprawling space pegged at 6500 plus sq. feet and what a scenic view.

I was greeted by owner Directors and restaurateurs Mr Gurminder Beniwal and Mr Gurpreet Gary Sandhu. As I settled for a exploratory talk with both promoter Director co- owners, I found them cool, calm and composed though a little excited with eustress lurking through their body

language, as their dream project see the light of the day.

When asked what the USP [unique selling point] of this brand new restaurant is, Mr Beniwal hastened to add that “we serve quality and quantity at inexpensive price.

Our motto is to sell more at a reasonable price with quality par excellence so as to serve our community. Every week you will have new modified dishes to satisfy the taste buds and healthy too”.

As I delved deep into the menu items to my pleasant surprise, they have very competitive prices and full range of vegan and non-vegan items viz., snacks, appetizers, main course [vegan/non vegan], deserts, beverages and a Bar with 10 type of beers on the tap – a kind of first in the city.

On staff front, the team of 25 is spearheaded by well experienced GM Mr. Prabhjot Sandhu.

Being from hospitality and food and beverage industry, both the directors have a vivid vision of a recipe to dole out excellent customer service and Zaiqa of our community.

A very roomy Banquet Hall for a party of 80 to 100 people capacity with utmost privacy is a treat to watch and feel all the stuff under one roof. More so it has a comfortable parking space and in the heart of the city.

This brand new bistro also has live singers, group band music, east Indian entertainment, DJ service and live sport matches to put the foodie at ease.

Buffet is not their forte as the management feels food lacks freshness being heated and reheated till it is sold out or dispensed with.

For an explorer of food a maiden visit to this brand new place is worth a visit, which entertains to the core. Also, as time progresses, an open air patio will be very tempting to enjoy fresh food in the basking in the glory of sun.

I feel a recipe is only a theme, which an intelligent chef can play each time with a variation with customers and community in mind.

T

he British Columbia Mainland Cricket League hosted its yet another successful season this year.

An award presentation ceremony to facilitate the participants was held at Crystal Banquet hall.

Over 300 players along with their friends and families attended the event to celebrate and recognise the achievements and accomplishments of participating players and teams.

A whooping total of 74 teams competed in a super exciting season which commenced in March and ended in September 2015. Along with the regular season, BCMCL also organized various other events like Preseason T20, Legends Memorial T10 Cricket Tournament, Clubs Six A Side, Miri-Piri Weekday T20, Intercontinental Six A side, and were part of Kids Play (JR Six A side), Big Bash, and western T20 (hosted by Cricket BC).

BCMCL season started in March with a Preseason T20 where Newton Surrey Cricket club bagged Premier Division and Ind-Can Cricket Club won the 1st Division.

Eleven Rocks took the Mid-week T20 trophy home (runner-up Surrey Kings), Cosmos Cricket Club won Club 6-a-Side, Inter-Continental was won

by Team India, and T10 title was taken home by Surrey United.

The presence of well-known community leaders and MP candidates like Sukh Dhaliwal, Randeep Sarai, Harpreet Singh, Kamal Sharma, Rajesh Ansal, Kal Dusanjh, and Ramandeep Dhillon made the event even more special.

BCMCL would like present special gratitude to Jimmy Hansraj for hosting the event keeping the evening lively throughout. “I pay my regard to the team that organized the awards night. A lot of work and time was put into organizing this evening. I am grateful to the committee members for their undying support. It’s ready to explode and not just in the mouth. The ‘bhut jolokia’ - recognised as the hottest of spices - will pack a punch when mixed with handgrenades to deal with terrorists, as trials

defence spokesperson said scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Tezpur in northern Assam were making a trial run of the hand grenades and other repellents by using the bhut jolokia.

“The chilli grenade is a non-toxic weapon and when used would force a terrorist to come out of his hideouts as the smell is so pungent that it would literally choke them,” R.B. Srivastava, a senior scientist and director of the DRDO, said.

The DRDO scientists had already carried out trials for the hand grenades mixed with the world’s hottest chilli and so far the tests have been satisfactory.

The bhut jolokia belongs to the capsicum Chinese family and is native to Assam. It is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as

the hottest of all spices.

The hotness of the bhut jolokia, measured in Scoville heat units was 1,001,304. It’s nearly twice as hot as Mexico’s red savina (577,000), the variety it replaced as the hottest. By comparison, a New Mexico green chilli contains about 1,500 Scoville units, while an average jalapeno measures at about 10,000.

“Work is on to develop other such things using bhut jolokia for effective utilisation by the security forces in dealing with riots and tackling insurgency and terrorists,” Srivastava said.

The non-lethal grenades devised by the DRDO could numb the enemy and immobilise them without seriously wounding or killing them.

“There are other applications as well, what we call women power. A specially made chilli powder could act as a tool for women to keep away anti-

socials and work in this regard is also on,” he said.

There were also plans to use bhut jolokia paste or powder in teargas shells for dispersing violent protesters or rioters.

“We are also trying for a scientific validation to find out if bhut jolokia could be incorporated into the food menu for soldiers in higher reaches to keep them warm. Physiological studies are on in this regard,” Srivastava said.

And the chilli powder would also be rubbed on the fences around army barracks in the hope the strong smell would keep animals out of bounds.

“The chilli paste could also act as a major repellent against wild elephants in some parts of Assam and other north-eastern states,” the scientist said.

report has claimed that frozen vegetables can often contain more nutrients than fresh ones.

Scientists from the Institute of Food Research claimed that produce which is frozen soon after being picked with have more

nutrients sealed in.

The research was carried out by the Institute on behalf of Birds Eye, the frozen food manufacturer.

Nutritionist Dr Sarah Schenker said: “The nutritional content of fresh vegetables begins to deteriorate from the minute

they are picked. This means that by the time they end up on our plate, although we may think we’re reaping the vegetable’s full nutritional benefits; this is often not the case.”
