‘Disco Dancer’ W musical planned for release around Diwali ork on the project, helmed by composer duo Salim-Sulaiman, started last year and initial plans were to launch the musical in May 2020. However, it had to be stalled in March due to lockdown, and a new date of release is now being planned around Diwali.

“We are restarting Disco Dancer.

Some of us are vaccinated and some of them need to. Things have changed a lot right now and we want to restart it when everyone has taken the first dose. We are almost ready to release it, but things are a bit preliminary. We are hoping to release it near Diwali,” Salim Merchant told in an interview.

“The Mithun Chakraborty-starrer evergreen dance musical blockbuster “Disco Dancer” is being made as a musical, and plans are to release it around Diwali this year.

Talking about why they decided on “Disco Dancer”, he said: “It was Mithun Chakraborty’s biggest film.

All the songs of this films are massive hits, whether it is ‘Yaad aa raha hai’, ‘I am a disco dancer’, ‘Goron ki na kalon ki’, ‘Jimmy Jimmy’, ‘Auva auva’ -- musically, it has a lot of amazing songs.

In terms of the music style, which is disco, it can never go out of fashion. It’s still present right now and people still move to it, dance to it, enjoy it, listen to it. It has a classic touch.”

Arjan Bhullar: MMA champion with fighting passion honed in Indian wrestling tradition His great grandfather landed in Canada over a century ago, and the passion for wrestling in the family of Punjab origin has produced a world champ.

I

t’s a story that will find resonance in many Punjabi households. A youngster leaves home in search of better opportunities and lands in Canada. He takes his family there in the next few years, and reminiscing about their roots becomes a constant theme. The Bhullar family in Richmond in that sense is like any other from Punjab that emigrates to the destination familiar to people from the northern Indian state.

Unlike most who seek a livelihood in Canada, this migration has produced a world champion. Arjan Bhullar last month

became the first Indian origin MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter to win a world title. He knocked out AmericanFilipino Brandon Vera, champion in the division since 2015, claiming the ONE Championship heavyweight title in Singapore this week.

“My whole family has been into wrestling, even before my birth.

I also tried team sport but it was the one-on-one sport that attracted me. I liked to take responsibility for my actions.

If you train hard, you get your arm raised, you improve and you go on to the higher level,” Bhullar says.

“I have known wrestling since I was in diapers. We had a wrestling arena at home.

We were 10 boys. Everyone wrestled. Lot of memories, and I was able to reach a higher level,” he says in a video call.

Bhullar’s victory is culmination of a cherished dream of his family that made Canada its home in the early 1900s. Bhullar’s great grandfather was the first to leave the Indian shores, and worked in a railway com-

pany. In the 1950s, he took his sonin-law (Bhullar’s grandfather). It The desperation was such that he had to leave his wife behind and missed the birth of his son (Bhullar’s dad Avtar).

Only in early 1970s would Avtar move to Canada from his village near Jalandhar, to meet his father for the first time. He completed his high school in Canada and initially worked in a saw mill. All through those years, the family’s love for wrestling remained intact. At least once a year, Bhullar’s father would travel to India to test himself against the best in dangals (mud-pit wrestling), which has a huge fan following.

Avtar even formed the Bhullar Wrestling Club to encourage children in the community to take up the demanding sport. Bhullar, who was born in Canada, was a natural in wrestling. He was national champion from 2008 to 2012 in the 120kg category. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, in the land of his family, Bhullar won gold, notching up victory over India’s Joginder Kumar in the final. At London in 2012, he became the first Canadian of South Asian descent to compete at the Olympics.

“Anytime you are first at something, it’s always special. I have had many firsts in my life. It’s a life I chose. I don’t think apart from combat sport I could have anything else,” Bhullar

says.

“When you are a kid you look for inspiration, hope. Sometimes you search that in other people. I found my inspiration in my dad. I guess my achievement will be an inspiration for more kids in my community here.”

After the 2012 Olympics, Bhullar quit wrestling. “I thought I had played the sport all my life. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to learn other techniques and fight in different ways. It led me to MMA. I took my time to learn the nuances and then got going.”

Bhullar took a three-year break from competition until his first MMA fight at the Battlefield Fight League in 2014. He spent time at the American Kickboxing Academy in California to improve his striking power. In 2017, he became the first fighter of Indian origin at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He has a 3-1 win-loss record there. He joined the ONE Championship in 2019.

“I want to defend the heavyweight title now, for sure. I am also looking for opportunities in professional wrestling (WWE). The hard work is the same everywhere. It’s the technique that is different. I am 35 and still strong enough to move ahead.”

Students at L.A. Matheson raise $7,000 to support Guru Nanak Diversity Village

P

rogressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society is proud of youth at L.A Matheson Secondary School in Surrey who have decided to dedicate the next 4 years for fundraising towards Guru Nanak Diversity Village (GNDV). L.A. Matheson students and teachers chose to actively fundraise during April to celebrate Vaisakhi and Sikh Heritage Month, raising $7,000 in just 3 weeks! This is just the beginning and the efforts are going to continue over the next four years to raise more funds.

Inspired by the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s principle of “Seva – Selfless Service”, the youth took the initiative to contribute their efforts in a meaningful manner and also involved their families and friends to support GNDV. PICS Society currently delivers an Adult Day program, Senior Independent and Assisted Living Facility programs. This culturally-sensitive long-term care facility is a step towards that direction and will bridge the gap between existing culturallysensitive programs by providing

long-term care services to our seniors. Construction for the facility, to be located in Surrey, is to start in late 2022 and it will be operational with seniors residing by 2024.

“On behalf of PICS Society, I want to thank and commend the participating students and teachers of L.A. Matheson for choosing to fundraise for this important community project for our seniors,” said Satbir Cheema, President and CEO of PICS. “It is very heartening to see our youth taking this initiative and in turn raising the bar manifold for the rest of us.

GNDV is a $58.3 million provincially funded project, with $5 million to be raised through community contributions. This 125-bed, 3-storey long-term senior care home is a project for the community, by the community. “We hope the initiative taken by L.A Matheson students and teachers, will inspire others in the community to initiate fundraising activities towards Guru Nanak Diversity Village,” said Ankita Grewal, Fundraising Officer for Guru Nanak Diversity Village.

yoga off the mat and into your everyday life

oga is a powerful practice that works on both the body and mind; that is why it helps in transforming the whole personality and not just the physical body.

However, there’s a common misconception that yoga is all about complicated postures. That by doing a complicated backbend, or after achieving the full splits, we somehow become ‘better than we were before’. It limits the concept of yoga to something that you only do on the mat. It assumes that if you can’t do extreme postures, you can’t ever be good at or practice yoga.

Namita Piparaiya, Yoga and Ayurveda Lifestyle Specialist, Founder, Yoganama shares few ways you can extend your yoga practice into your daily life.

Moderation As we learned from Goldilocks, moderation is the approach of ‘neither too much nor too little’. Moderation can be followed in all aspects of life, such as diet, speech, exercise, possessions, and everything else. The opposite of moderation would be either overindulgence which is harmful.

Or completely denying ourselves to the extent of suppressing our needs which almost always backfires in the long run.

Moderation keeps you away from extremes and therefore is a very sustainable strategy as it takes up very little energy.

You experience this in a yoga class when you hold postures for a more extended

period. If you push yourself too much, you’ll come out of the pose before the time is up due to pain or extreme discomfort.

Equally, if you are lazy while practicing, you won’t benefit from the time you’re spending on the mat. Apply the right amount of effort, and you have a rewarding yoga practice that leaves you feeling recharged and refreshed. And the ‘right effort’ can be different for everyone; that’s why everyone’s yoga practice will look different.

Mindfulness Mindfulness refers to present moment awareness. It is a very powerful and wellresearched practice that can change the very structure of our brain. Mindfulness meditation makes us more rational, less impulsive, and even increases our grey matter. The good thing is mindfulness can be practiced anytime during the day and not just while you’re meditating. You can be mindful when you’re eating, when you’re brushing your teeth, when driving, and so on. All you have to do is become completely aware of the activity you’re doing by observing it in full detail.

If you’ve done a yoga class, you’ve undoubtedly experienced mindfulness. Yoga is a great mindfulness practice because all postures are done with

breath awareness. Even in Sun Salutations, you follow a specific breathing pattern. Each movement or transition is accompanied by an instruction to either inhale, exhale or hold the breath. When you hold a difficult single-leg balance like Natrajasana, you automatically become more mindful that you would lose your balance without awareness. In this way, yoga trains you to become aware of what you’re doing with the help of the breath or the difficult nature of posture. It is a great skill to start applying in your everyday life -- both in emotional moments or while doing banal tasks like washing dishes.

Equanimity Try doing a single leg balance when very angry or emotional, and you’ll likely have some trouble. In extreme circumstances, our inner emotional balance gets disturbed, reflecting in our physical state.

In yoga, you learn to bring your balance back by taking some deep breaths or doing some gentle kriyas to re-center the body and mind.

And you can employ the breath anytime during the day when you feel overwhelmed. It could be if you’re angry at your boss or had an argument with a colleague, have received a defective product, or are stuck in traffic! With Yoga, you’ve trained yourself in resetting your nervous system by using your breath. And that’s a skill that you can employ multiple times during the day to be stronger and more patient to deal with the stresses of modern life.

In fact, without this skill, you cannot sit in meditation because the mind would be highly distracted. That is why in yoga, you practice pranayama before meditation as the breath helps your thoughts settle down. After that, your meditation can be productive as you will have better focus and concentration.

With consistent and regular yoga practice, you learn the value of the right amount of effort that teaches you the concept of moderation. A new or challenging posture leads you to stay in the present moment and be more mindful. And by employing the breath, you learn to consciously relax and unwind even in stressful situations such as a challenging posture. In this way, you develop the mental stamina and fitness to navigate your everyday life.

Hamid: Irresistible piece on peace

The film’s only unconvincing moments are those that show the characters losing their equilibrium.

Hamid’s desperate desire for the return of his missing father, his unlikely phonefriendship with the trooper Abhay (what if Ritesh Batra’s “Lunchbox” was about a long-distance friendship between a fatherless child and a man seem to be in some way responsible for the little boy’s tragedy?) and his eventual realisation that the father he so anxiously awaits will never return, are mapped in a labyrinth displaying the pathway of pain and suffering into the human heart.

Adapting this poetic political parable to the large screen, director Aijaz Khan forfeits none of Kashmir’s scenic outdoor beauty, nor at the same time, does the film’s frames look like touristic brochure. As the story of little Hamid unfolds in a tapestry of pain

This is a film that Majid Majidi could have made. The blend of blood and innocence is the hallmark of the Iranian auteur’s filmmaking style.

Director Aijaz Khan has adapted Majidi’s style wholesale and then given it his own striking yet unostentatious twist.

and self-realisation, we are taken on a subtle tender yet revealing voyage into the valley of violence.

While the little boy Talha Alshad Reshi with his big questioning eyes is a naturalborn scene stealer, Rasika Duggal as an impoverished single parent struggling to come to terms with the immensity of her loss, is the portrait of supreme conviction and credibility.

Curiously the film daintily steers away from getting into the murkier aspects of the mother’s singlehood in a state ridden with predatory aggression. For better or for worse, this gem of a film wants to steer its boat away from the violence that stares little Hamid and his mother in the face.

Rounding out this resonant raga of hope, the narrative concludes with little Hamid receiving some expensive paint to colour the boat the boy builds by embracing his father’s craft of carpentry.

Red is the colour of blood and bloodshed.

But in this film it is also the colour of hope and positivity. It’s time to paint the Green Valley into postcard-perfect shades again.

Hamid brings hope. It’s an irresistible piece on peace, and one that every Indian must see.

in militancy and yet salvaged by redemptive twists of fate which perhaps would stump even God. Standing tall in this slender parable of strife and humanism is little Hamid, played with a instinctive gravity and artless wisdom by Talha Alshad Reshi.

Casting him is half the battle won. As little Hamid converses on his missing father’s cellphone with ‘God’ (who turns out to be a troubled CRPF trooper with a Bihari accent) the plot puts forward a sturdy yet subtle argument for dialogue, albeit on an artless “poetic” level, which for all practical purposes serves no purpose in the real world of stone pelters and human bombs.

And yet in spite of the film blissfully burying its head in the clouds, there is a burning yearning for peace underlining the treacherous tranquility of the film’s surface.

I hope it made her look forward to her days in a way that only having a purpose or being brilliant at doing something makes you,” Kapadia writes.

TBK had come to a grinding halt after a nationwide lockdown was declared on March 24, 2020 because of Covid-19 and “we’re just about getting back on our feet” a year later, Kapadia writes, exuding confidence about the future.

“I do believe that the brand that we created because of a fight with Mom over a TV remote can survive a global pandemic. After all, #BOHRIFOODCOMA (the state in which some guests found themselves in after a meal at the TBK Home Dining Experience) is considered a pretty dangerous affliction by itself.

“Through this book, I hope to inspire you. I hope to make you laugh a little and I hope that you take away this, if nothing else -- if I can do it, so can you,” he maintains.

This confidence, in fact, grows out of one of the 10 “Samosa Gyans” that Kapadia offers in the book: More than failure be afraid of not trying your best.

Central to the TBK Home Dining Experience is the Bohra Thaal that Kapadia (then still with Google but quit soon after) and his mother devised. This is how it works: The average thaal is a large steel platter three feet in diameter placed slightly elevated on a square cloth mat called a safra around which seven or eight guests are seated, either cross-legged or somewhere between cross-legged and a padmasana.

Once all the guests arrive, the preplated thaal is placed before them with condiments that include pudina chutney, pineapple and boondi raita, aam chunda (a sweet raw mango preserve with chilli powder, kokum aloo, Bhavnagri nirchis, aamba halad (two types of fresh turmeric and black pepper pickled in vinegar) and a bowl of lemon wedges.

The food is served on the thaal coursewise, starting with a kharaas or a savoury item such as TBK’s now famous

Smoked Mutton Kheema Samosas. This may be followed by a Nariyal Kebab (tiny vegetarian kababs stuffed with mashed potato, spring onions and desiccated coconut).

Eating the samosa is an art in itself.

You bite off the top and squeeze in some lime juice and green chutney to get the full flavour of the smoked mutton kheema -- an experience that invariably has guests asking for more!

The kharaas is followed by a meethas or sweet dish (to help balance the gut), for instance, a Malai Khaja, a kind of Bohra Baklava.

Then comes the more serious food like the Raan in Red Masala -- a one kilo plus a leg of a goat marinated for over two days and cooked on a high pressure flame for a couple of hours.

The next up is the jaman aka main course -- it could be either Kaari Chawal

And, with the Home Dining Experience on firm ground, it was time to expand TBK’s reach with a second kitchen at Worli for the delivery business and five cloud kitchens in the suburbs that were each clocking 200 biryani deliveries a day -- collectively doing business of Rs 35 lakh a month by August 2019.

On the comeback trail since January, TBK is currently servicing from its Worli kitchen five to 20 pre-orders a day depending on the day of the week.

The extensive Ramzan special menu includes an Iftar Meal Box, Haleem with Khammi Roti, Mutton Paya with Sheermal Bread, Raan in Red Masala, and, of course, Smoked Mutton Kheema Samosas.

As Kapadia puts it in one of his “Samosa Gyans”: I might not be a billionaire, but I know I’ve achieved enough to inspire you to get off your seat.

Throughout time, salt (sodium chloride) has played a vital role in human societies. However, excessive salt consumption could result in serious health problems as it directly impacts the energy levels in one body. Salt is typically made up of the fire and water elements and a small amount regulates moisture level in the body which promotes better absorption of nutrients from food, regulates blood pressure and are vital to the functioning of the brain and nervous system.

Eating too much salt can have a range of effects. In the short term, it may cause bloating, severe thirst, and a temporary rise in blood pressure. In severe cases, it may also lead to hypernatremia, which, if left untreated, can be fatal. All you need to know about Separation Anxiety in Dogs

I

n this month’s article, we will be discussing a very common behaviour that is seen in many dogs and even cats. This behaviour is termed as, “Separation Anxiety”. This term can be linked to your furry companion if he/she is seen being destruc-

tive at home when left by themselves for a period of time. Such destructive manners may include barking, chewing, defecating, urinating, digging, clawing or escaping when left alone.

The common root cause to this problem is often seen to be distress. These

signs of distress can also be seen initiated once the pet comes to understand that preparations of leaving the property are being made by the person, who they are most attached. This can be seen as a triggering event to their Separation Anxiety. This anxiety, like human anxiety, can be portrayed through different set of emotions.

Your dog may show agitation, depression or anxiousness during this time.

The main goal we wish to achieve when treating a dog displaying signs of separation anxiety is to show your dog that it is ok to be left alone and that it can be enjoyable at times too!

When treating a dog with separation anxiety, the goal is to resolve the dog’s underlying cause of uneasiness by teaching him to enjoy, or at least tolerate, being left alone. This is accomplished by setting contributing factors in a way so that the dog experiences the said situation without feeling the accompanying anxiety.

this category of anxiety is: urinating/ defecating (which occurs in reciprocation of the owner leaving the pet alone); barking/howling; destruction of things (a dog may chew on objects or furniture, he may dig his nails into the front or back door of the house or destroy things in retaliation to being left alone); pacing (dogs may be seen showing restless behaviour of walking in circles or pacing back and forth); escaping (if a dog feels very anxious of being left alone in a confined space then his instinct will be to run away as soon as he sees the opportunity).

There are many causes to why a dog may experience separation anxiety, such as a change in schedule, location, ownership or absence of a family member (death or moving away).

It is important to have a visit with your local veterinarian if your dog is experiencing the signs above. Your veterinarian may conduct a few tests first to rule out any underlying medical issues before bringing attention to the possible cause of separation anxiety. Treatment for such a condition is very doable but requires complete compliance of the owner, in order to sufficiently help the pet. A method in behaviour medicine, known as Counterconditioning, will be applied. This method allows for your dog to replace the anxious feelings surrounding an event of being left alone into a relaxed state instead. In next month’s article we will discuss a more detailed lay out of what the treatment plan for separation anxiety looks like.

We went upstairs on the second floor of the Golden Temple.

Nancy felt very happy and started running hither and thither. Sunny held her while she was running towards a window.

“The windows are too low here.

You, sit somewhere, I’ll take care of Nancy.”, Sunny said. I looked at Sunny with great sisterly love.

“What happened, didi?”, Sunny asked me.

“I am seeing that our quarrelsome brother has become so sane.”, I said smilingly and began reading patth sitting near a window. Baljit and dad also sat beside me. After reading the patth, we had langar, the holy food.

We left Amritsar in our car.

We came out of the city. Dad bought some bananas with some salt. God knows why the taste of fruits and vegetables of Punjab was so good. Nancy loved that banana with salt. Then we left for Ludhiana.

“Dad, now tell me why you smiled at me in Darbar sahib.”, I asked dad on the way home to Ludhiana.

“I was seeing that god has made

We reached home and met mom. I gave Nancy a shower first, and then I had a shower.

Then we gossiped for a while and had our meals. After our meal, we all went out for a walk. After coming home, mom gave Baljit and me a glass of milk and we went to sleep.

“Baljit, don’t take me wrong.

I want to say that these English people consider liars very bad people. We have told lies to the

visa officer which is not good.

I think we should tell them the truth. They will surely give you visa.”, I assured Baljit truthfully as I had no bad intention for Baljit. He replied that he would think over it and let me know. I realized Baljit’s mental condition and stopped further discussion.

By reading gurbani, my heart was filled with so much love for everyone and everything that I was seeing god in everyone everywhere. Despite so many problems in my life, I was feeling a spiritual comfort and an eternal strength to cope with all of them. I always felt that some supernatural power was helping me every moment.

The next day, I went to the washroom. I was terribly scared to see dark circles under my eyes. I heaved sigh of sorrow. I was turning to be old. Gosh! My lovely face was looking so ugly.

NEW IMMIGRATION PATHWAY- A MAJOR HEADWAY TOWARDS PERMANENT RESIDENCY

C

anada set the most ambitious immigration goals in its history last year, aiming to accept more than 400,000 new permanent residents in 2021. With an aim to achieve the set targets, IRCC sent invitations to 27,000 plus applicants eligible under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) of Express Entry in the month of February 2021.

Moving forward, Canada launched six new streams, with over 90,000 new permanent residents planned. The new policy was launched on May 6, 2021 and it will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until the set number of applications are submitted and/or received, whichever is earlier. Temporary staff in hospitals and long- term care homes, as well as those on the frontlines of other essential sectors, as well as international student graduates from Canadian educational institutions, are eligible for this temporary public policy (TR to PR Pathway).

The list of new streams and their set target numbers are as follows: a) Essential workers: Stream A- Health Care Work-

ers with a quota of 20,000 applications Stream B- Essential nonhealth care workers with a quota of 30,000 applications b) International Graduates with a quota of 40,000 applications (40,000 target met within 24 hours) c) French Speaking Essential workers: Stream AHealth Care Workers (Unlimited) Stream B- Essential nonhealth care workers (Unlimited) d) French Speaking International Graduates (Unlimited) Workers need to have at least one year of work experience in a qualifying profession in Canada, be currently working in Canada, and plan to live outside of Quebec. International students must have completed their studies at a Canadian university or college within the previous four years to be qualified (not having graduated before January 2017), must be employed and intend to live outside Quebec.

Notably, French- language speakers will be able to apply through their own sperate route, which will be similar in any way except for the quota exemption.

It was not very surprising to see that the category for International Graduates with a quota of 40,000 applications took no less than a day to be completely filled. A lot of hustle-bustle was observed on the day the policy was launched which slowly returned to a normal steady pace the very next day. The other categories are still open and accepting applications and have not reached their specific targets yet.

This new policy however will help those with temporary status to prepare for their future in Canada, play a key role in our economic recovery, and help the economy rebuild better.

eliac disease, is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

If you have celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine. Over time, this reaction damages your small intestine’s lining and prevents it from absorbing some nutrients The intestinal damage often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating and anemia, and can lead to serious complications.

There’s no cure for celiac disease — but for most people, following a strict glutenfree diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

Symptoms The signs and symptoms of celiac disease can vary greatly and differ in children and adults. Digestive signs and symptoms for adults include: 4 Diarrhea 4 Fatigue 4 Weight loss 4 Bloating and gas 4 Abdominal pain 4 Nausea and vomiting 4 Constipation However, more than half the adults with celiac disease have signs and symptoms unrelated to the digestive system, including: 4 Anemia, usually from iron deficiency 4 Loss of bone density (osteoporosis) or softening of bone (osteomalacia) 4 Itchy, blistery skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis) 4 Mouth ulcers 4 Headaches and fatigue 4 Nervous system injury, including numbness and tingling in the feet and hands, possible problems with balance, and cognitive impairment 4 Joint pain 4 Reduced functioning of the spleen (hyposplenism)

Causes Your genes combined with eating foods with gluten and other factors can contribute to celiac disease, but the precise cause isn’t known. Infant-feeding practices, gastrointestinal infections and gut bacteria might contribute, as well. Sometimes celiac disease becomes active after surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, viral infection or severe emotional stress.

When the body’s immune system overreacts to gluten in food, the reaction damages the tiny, hairlike projections (villi) that line the small intestine. Villi absorb vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from the food you eat. If your villi are damaged, you can’t get enough nutrients, no matter how much you eat.

Risk factors Celiac disease tends to be more common in people who have: 4 A family member with celiac disease or

dermatitis herpetiformis 4 Type 1 diabetes 4 Down syndrome or Turner syndrome 4 Autoimmune thyroid disease 4 Microscopic colitis (lymphocytic or collagenous colitis) 4 Addison’s disease

Complications Untreated, celiac disease can cause: Malnutrition. This occurs if your small intestine can’t absorb enough nutrients.

Malnutrition can lead to anemia and weight loss. In children, malnutrition can cause slow growth and short stature.

Bone weakening. Malabsorption of calcium and vitamin D can lead to a softening of the bone (osteomalacia or rickets) in children and a loss of bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) in adults.

Infertility and miscarriage. Malabsorption of calcium and vitamin D can contribute to reproductive issues.

Lactose intolerance. Damage to your small intestine might cause you abdominal pain and diarrhea after eating or drinking dairy products that contain lactose. Once your intestine has healed, you might be able to tolerate dairy products again.
