Hair-raising real Indian ghost stories from famous tourist destinations

all of us who travel, gain experiences, most of which we never want to forget. But have you ever had an experience so terrifying that you can neither talk about it nor keep it to yourself?

18 www.entertainmentmagazine.ca August 2023 GhoST SToRIES

GhoST SToRIES

If your answer is ‘none’, you’re either kidding or have been very lucky because there are people who claim to have experienced things that have almost scared them to death.

You still don’t believe? Well, you might want to read these hair-raising experiences of seven different people from seven famous tourist destinations in India.

The umbrella Man - shimla “It was a holiday in school and a friend and I had planned to chill at the Mall Road and have some snacks. However, by the time we reached Mall Road, it was already 7 pm. We had coffee, enjoyed clicking pictures and had amazing momos at a restaurant on The Ridge. At 9 pm, we started walking back to our respective homes. I had barely walked a few hundred metres when it started drizzling. I was at a section of a road which was very quiet and had no shops but some of the streetlights were still on.

As I walked further, I saw a man with an umbrella walking a few feet ahead of me. I thought it would be a good idea to ask if he would allow me to join him if he was going the same way. I walked faster but it seemed that I wasn’t fast enough. So I started jogging but I still couldn’t catch up with him. “Hello!” I shouted loudly and the man turned around. His age must have been somewhere in the late 60s but what surprised me was the fact that despite having an umbrella, he was completely drenched. He started walking again and this time I walked slowly. Perhaps, I didn’t want to be near him anymore.

He slowed down too. I walked

even more slowly and so did he. Finally, I stopped. There was complete silence. He had also stopped. I could feel the fear suffocating my thoughts. Just when I thought that I may not live long enough to share this experience, I heard a siren blaring and a police vehicle stopped behind me. They asked me what I was doing here alone. When I told them this story, they said I was alone. There was no one there with an umbrella and that I should stop sleepwalking.” -

Not an Earthquake - Dharchula

“I had just arrived at Dharchula from Panchachuli and was going to stay at a guest house in Dharchula for the night. Surprisingly, the guest house I was staying in had no other guest. I had my dinner and went off to sleep at around 10:30 pm.

Suddenly, I could feel the bed shaking and started escalating, seconds later. I

jumped out of bed, ready to put on my slippers and run out as I was sure it was an earthquake. But utter darkness surrounded me and the shaking stopped. It was completely silent. I turned the lights on and walked out of the door. It was raining and completely dark. No one was awake. I rushed down the stairs towards the reception area to ask the men there about the earthquake.

Two of them were awake and were watching a cricket match. “Nothing shook here. We didn’t feel any earthquake” they said when I asked them. I was sure the bed was shaking. What kind of earthquake was that? Or was it even an earthquake? Well, I couldn’t sleep after that and ended up watching TV the whole night.”

The sea Has Hands - Dumas Beach

“I had heard many horror stories surrounding the Dumas Beach in Surat. I am not a daredevil but I am an adventurer who loves to travel. So, there I was, at the Dumas Beach on Christmas eve last year. It was around 7 pm and I was enjoying long-exposure photography when I suddenly heard someone screaming. I had noticed a few children playing in the water a while ago but most of them had left. I waded into the water to see if anyone was in trouble.

I could hear a child crying. I had waded in deep enough to start swimming. Suddenly, I felt a strong push by a pair of hands on my back and I

plunged into the water. Even though I knew swimming, an unlikely fear of drowning overpowered me. Perhaps, I was in shock with everything that had happened in the last minute. I managed to swim back to the beach only to realise how far into the sea I had wandered in from there. It was hard to believe how it could happen. Moreover, the cries had died down.

I don’t know whether it was real or something beyond the realms of what I could see but I was convinced I hadn’t waded so far into the sea that I had to swim for a good minute to get back to the beach.” - Abhinandan Sharma, Software Engineer, Delhi.

Good decision - Kashedi

“It was January 3, 2018. I was driving back to Ratnagiri from Mahabaleshwar after enjoying a solo holiday. It was around 10 pm and I was enjoying driving on empty roads. Suddenly, I noticed a lady waiting alone at a bus stand near Kashedi and I slowed down a bit, stopping eventually. She looked old, tired and had a bag which she grabbed and hurried towards my car. Something told me to be ready to accelerate soon.

She knocked at my window asking me to roll it down, which I did no more than 2 cm. “My husband threw me out of the house and I am all alone.

My family lives about half an hour from here. Will you give me a ride? Please, I am no ghost”, she pleaded with an intriguing smile on her face. She was pale and had unkempt hair. “I am not going that way, I am sorry”, I lied and started accelerating. “Good decision”, she yelled from behind and these words still send chills down my spine till date.” - Anonymous

Diagnosis

4Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG): An ECG is a quick and painless test that records the electrical signals in your heart. It can spot abnormal heart rhythms. You may have an ECG while you’re at rest or while exercising (stress electrocardiogram).

4Holter monitoring: A Holter monitor is a portable ECG device you wear to continuously record your heart rhythm, usually for 24 to 72 hours. Holter monitoring is used to detect heart rhythm problems that aren’t found during a regular ECG exam.

4Echocardiogram: This noninvasive exam uses sound waves to produce detailed images of your heart’s structure. It shows how your heart beats and pumps blood.

4stress test: This type of test involves raising your heart rate with exercise or medicine while performing heart tests and imaging to check how your heart responds.

4Cardiac catheterization: In this test, a short tube (sheath) is inserted into a vein or artery in your leg (groin) or arm. A hollow, flexible and longer tube (guide catheter) is then inserted into the sheath. Using X-ray images on a monitor as a guide, your doctor carefully threads the catheter through the artery until it reaches your heart.

4During cardiac catheterization, the pressures in your heart chambers can be measured, and dye can be injected. The dye can be seen on an X-ray, which helps your doctor see the blood flow through your heart, blood vessels and valves to check for problems.

4Cardiac computerized tomography (CT) scan: In a cardiac CT scan, you lie on a table inside a doughnut-shaped machine. An X-ray tube inside the machine rotates around your body and collects images of your heart and chest.

4Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): A cardiac MRI uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed images of your heart.

4Control your blood pressure: Ask your doctor for a blood pressure measurement at least every two years. He or she may recommend more frequent measurements if your blood pressure is higher than normal or you have a history of heart disease. Optimal blood pressure is less than 120 systolic and 80 diastolic, as measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).

4Check your cholesterol: Ask your doctor for a baseline cholesterol test when you’re in your 20s and then at least every five years. You may need to start testing earlier if high cholesterol is in your family. If your test results aren’t within desirable ranges, your doctor may recommend more-frequent measurements.

4Most people should aim for a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) level below 130 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 3.4 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). If you have other risk factors for heart disease, you should aim for an LDL level below 100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L). If you’re at very high risk of heart disease — if you’ve already had a heart attack or have diabetes, for example — aim for an LDL level below 70 mg/dL (1.8 mmol/L).

4Keep diabetes under control: If you have diabetes, tight blood sugar control can help reduce the risk of heart disease.

4Exercise: Physical activity helps you achieve and maintain a healthy weight and control diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure — all risk factors for heart disease. If you have a heart arrhyth-

mia or heart defect, there may be some restrictions on the activities you can do, so talk to your doctor. With your doctor’s OK, aim for 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.

4Eat healthy foods: A heart-healthy diet based on fruits, vegetables and whole grains — and low in saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium and added sugar — can help you control your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol.

4Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight increases your risk of heart disease. A body mass index (BMI) of less than 25 and a waist circumference of 35 inches (88.9 centimeters) or less is the goal for preventing and treating heart disease.

4Manage stress. Reduce stress as much as possible: Practice techniques for managing stress, such as muscle relaxation and deep breathing.

4Get treatment for depression: Being depressed can increase your risk of heart disease significantly. Talk to your doctor if you feel hopeless or uninterested in your life.

4Practice good hygiene: Regularly wash your hands and brush and floss your teeth to keep yourself well.

Also, get regular medical checkups. Early detection and treatment can set the stage for a lifetime of better heart health.

Celebrating the Independent India

Independence Day is an annual observance in India that marks the country’s freedom from British rule, granting India its sovereignty on August 15, 1947. This day not only signifies India’s independence but also serves as an opportunity for the people of this diverse country to come together and celebrate their shared identity as a nation. The Observance comprises flag hoisting ceremonies, parades, and various activities across the country, which show respect and gratitude to those who fought for India’s freedom.

The British East India Company began its rule in India in the early 17th century, with the establishment of trade posts and eventually expanding its territorial control. The Indian Rebellion of 1857, also known as the First War of Independence, marked the beginning of the Indian freedom struggle. It took nearly a century of continued resistance before India finally gained independence in 1947.

The significance of India’s Independence Day resonates with the people of Canada, as both countries share a similar colonial past, and their respective struggles for freedom ultimately led to the formation of strong democracies. Moreover, the Indo-Canadian community, consisting of over 1.3 million people, plays a vital role in strengthening the cultural and economic ties between the two

countries.

In Canada, the Indian Independence Day is celebrated by numerous Indian community organizations and cultural associations. Events such as cultural programs, flag hoisting ceremonies, and social gatherings are organized in major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal to display national pride and unity. These events foster a sense of belonging among the Indo-Canadian community, and also serve as a platform to share and educate others about the rich history and heritage of India. India’s Independence Day is observed annually on August 15th.

5 ways to deal with your child’s junk food consumption

Be it the first time they grab your finger or the first few steps they take, each development makes your heart leap with joy. But, with each new step, parents are also constantly worried about their health and well-being. Parenting is often challenging and takes ample hard work and responsibilities, especially for the new parents as the formative years of children hold the utmost importance to shape their lives. One of the biggest worries of a parent is to make their kids eat nutritious and

healthy meals that help them to grow. However, Kids often get fussy and demand junk food with unhealthy fats and added sugars. They also increase children’s chances of developing childhood obesity which causes multiple risk factors for many health complications in later life.

Dr. Pallavi Rao Chaturvedi, a parenting coach, educator, and founder of Get set Parent shares few ideas to raise your kids in a junk food-free environment:

Be an example for kids to follow: Children often imitate their parents and look up to them for everything. Hence, it is very important to make sure you are setting a good example by choosing nutritious, homecooked meals over fast food. Show them that healthy eating can be delicious and can make all the difference.

Converse and educate: Teach your kids about the importance of a balanced diet and explain the negative effects of excessive fast-food consumption. Help them understand the nutritional value of whole foods and the consequences of consuming a lot of processed foods.

Involve them in meal planning and preparation: Get your children actively involved in meal planning and preparation, ask for their suggestions, and try to implement them. Let them pick out fruits and vegetables at the grocery store and help in the kitchen. This will give them a sense of ownership and make them more likely to enjoy healthier meals.

limit fast food as a treat: Instead of completely saying no to fast food, consider it as an occasional treat rather than a regular meal option. Set clear rules about how often it can be consumed, such as once a week or for special occasions.

Make healthy snacks accessible: Keep a variety of healthy snacks readily available for your child to choose from. Stock the pantry with options like fresh fruits, cut vegetables, whole grain crackers, and yogurt. Limit the availability of processed snacks and sugary treats.

Choose healthier alternatives: When eating out, choose restaurants offering healthier options or a wider range of choices. Look for places that have salads, grilled options, and fresh ingredients. Encourage your kids to make healthier choices by explaining the benefits of those options.

Remember that changes in eating habits may not happen overnight. Be patient, consistent, and supportive as you work towards improving your child’s eating habits and patterns for a better and healthier tomorrow.

Build a capsule wardrobe and reduce fast fashion consumption

Be it Marie Kondo’s wardrobe-focused tidying technique or Matilda Kahl’s choice to wear one outfit to work for three years, the trend of dressing up consciously and having a capsule wardrobe is gaining traction. Before we get into how to build a capsule wardrobe, let’s know what it entails.

A capsule wardrobe is an edit of clothing that has a long shelf life, is thoughtfully curated, and is interchangeable to make multiple outfits! A capsule wardrobe, in essence, helps you in creating an array of looks with a selected number of pieces.

The term capsule wardrobe was coined in the 1970s by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called Wardrobe. Faux believed that a capsule wardrobe com-

prises a few essential pieces. These can be supplemented with seasonal additions.

Capsule wardrobes in this day and age are having a revival, largely due to an increase in public awareness. The consumer today is much more aware of the harmful effects of fast fashion on our planet and all living species.

A key tip to build a capsule wardrobe and reduce fast fashion consumption, Surabhi Chopra, founder of Surabhi Chopra Label says, “Clothes are often our armor that we do every day, or they are a means to celebrate festivities. The thought of having fewer pieces in your wardrobe can often be overwhelming. Therefore, start with an analysis of your lifestyle. To create a capsule wardrobe, you need to know what your personal style is

and what pieces will be most useful for the kind of lifestyle you lead. Try asking yourselves questions like, ‘Do I need work-specific clothes? Do I need more travel clothes? Do I need more formal wear?’ Consider all your needs so that you are better able to stick to the capsule wardrobe without any impulse purchases.”

“The second step is to declutter your wardrobe. Most of us have a habit of hoarding clothes. Therefore, take out everything you have in your closet and analyze every piece in accordance with your style and lifestyle. Remove the pieces that you haven’t worn for a long time or the ones that don’t suit you or aren’t your size. Donate, sell, or recycle these items. Then sort the rest into categories like bottoms, denim, tees, blouses, etc.”

“The final step is to curate timeless pieces that are interchangeable. Have 25-30 items for every season. The basis of a functional capsule wardrobe is versatility. It includes interchangeable garments that can create multiple looks for our everyday lives. Once you have sorted your pieces and feel that some basics are missing, invest in those items. Ensure that what you do is sustainable and long-lasting. Have basic tops, versatile jackets, etc. Neutral colors can be a great bet, as they are great for creating cohesive looks for any season and occasion,” adds Surabhi.

While building a capsule wardrobe, it is imperative to have quality pieces that are both fictional and versatile. Do not invest in pieces that will lose their charm after a few wears. The only way to combat fast fashion is to invest in clothing that is useful, practical and suits your lifestyle. A versatile piece of clothing can easily pair with other pieces, be styled in different ways, and be worn in different contexts. Think about the item’s weight, fabric quality, silhouette length, and, most importantly, how easy it is to maintain and wash. For an occasional treat, if you feel that for a particular occasion, you cannot use any of the garments in your capsule wardrobe, then renting something boring can be a great idea!

Although remember that a capsule wardrobe should be built slowly over time. Fast fashion fuels impulse purchases and rapid discards with its low prices and changing trends. This waste finds its way to landfills, where it results in low wages for the workforce and a heavy toll on the environment due to unethical and unsustainable manufacturing practices. It is estimated that the garment industry contributes to almost 10 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, purchasing clothes just for the sake of trends or impulse comes at a price for the environment.

You will undoubtedly have some leftovers the following day if you think that having too much food is preferable to having not enough. Therefore, if you intend to store them, keep them in the refrigerator to prevent the growth of bacteria that could become dangerous to your health.

But hold on, have you ever questioned whether the food you are reheating is still edible? Well, given that they frequently lose their nutritional content when reheated, several of the foods we eat on a daily basis might not be as safe.

And as long as you are aware of which items you should never reheat, that isn’t necessarily a negative thing.

sEAfooD

Fresh seafood usually tastes better than frozen seafood. But given that this preservation method is more tightly regulated by food safety organizations, purchasing it frozen may be safer.

But what should you do if you prepare a gourmet meal, like seafood paella, and there is

Foods you should avoid reheating

to that of the spinach.

You run the risk of receiving a dose of toxins instead of all the wonderful advantages of this vegetable in its raw or lightly cooked form if you put the leftover beetroot stew or curry in the oven, microwave or hob.

MusHRooM

White and brown button mushrooms, for example, may be okay to eat raw, but the majority of the other mushrooms should absolutely be cooked. Again, the next day, you absolutely should not microwave them. Unless you put it in the fridge quickly enough after cooking.

simply too much to eat? Once more, as soon as it has slightly cooled off, place it in a refrigerator.

RICE

The same is true of rice, another common component of dinner. You can safely reheat the dinner the following day if you store it in the refrigerator as soon as it has cooled off a bit. If you don’t and leave it out on the counter for too long, the Bacillus cereus bacteria may begin to grow.

sPINACH

Even the best foods can turn toxic if they are prepared

improperly. When consumed raw, spinach is tasty and incredibly nourishing. But when softly melted over oil in a pan, it creates a really lovely side dish or even a beautiful sauce.

You shouldn’t subject it to heat again after the first time. Use any leftovers in a salad or simply consume them cold. Nitrates are abundant in spinach, and when they are heated to a high temperature, they can transform into nitrosamines, the majority of which are carcinogenic.

EGGs

We all know that eggs are a great source of protein, but repeatedly heating fried or boiled eggs can be dangerous. Eat fried eggs right away, but if they’ve been kept for a while, don’t reheat them; instead, just eat them cold because high-protein foods contain a lot of nitrogen. Reheating could cause this nitrogen to oxidize, which would then cause cancer.

BEETRooT

Beet-containing cooked meals also fall under the category of foods that shouldn’t be heated up again. The narrative is same

Mushroom proteins can be harmed by enzymes and bacteria that begin to grow at room temperature if they are not stored appropriately. An unpleasant stomach may result from this.

CHICKEN

You already know how delicious hot chicken is, but if you are preserving the curry for the next day, remember not to reheat it constantly. When this staple is heated from the refrigerator, its protein makeup is completely altered. The digestive system may experience issues as a result. Be careful not to heat it at a high temperature.

PoTAToEs

Have you ever noticed how poorly leftover cooked potatoes taste? Maybe you haven’t since the flavor would merely blend in if you fried them again in a skillet or heated them along with other dishes. But if you give it a shot, I’m confident that you’ll never want to eat leftover potatoes again.

Long-term room temperature storage of cooked potatoes can result in the growth of clostridium botulinum bacteria. Eating food contaminated with these bacteria can have very serious implications.

Nolan masterfully conveys Oppenheimer’s triumph & tragedy

Duration: 180 minutes

Director & screenplay: Christopher Nolan

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh IANs Rating: ****

The life of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the most respected leader of the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb during World War II, has been the subject of a number of biographies, but history hasn’t been kind to him. His story still needs to be chronicled.

The epic biographical thriller ‘Oppenheimer’, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, gives us a fatalistic view of nuclear weapons, and the trauma that they entail. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2005 biography ‘American Prometheus’ by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film is about the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who pioneered the study of the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project, thereby ushering in the Atomic Age.

During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints Oppenheimer, along with a team of scientists, to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. The mission gets completed on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, and it forever changes the course of history.

The film begins with a reference from Greek mythology to Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods and gave it to men. For his action, the gods condemned him to being chained to a rock and tortured lifelong.

Thereafter, it shifts focus back and forth giving viewers a peek into the multifarious elements, namely, politics, the effects and limitless possibilities of science, the annihilation that war could bring, and Oppenheimer’s unbridled passion.

The narrative investigates the character of power, and how, if not balanced out, it could lead to shadowy Catch-22s without so much as an explanation for any conclusion in sight.

Interestingly, the three-hourlong film is not about the bomb as much as it is about the U.S. government’s decision and the subsequent bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and gives us a glimpse into all the paperwork that justified the morality that was ever questioned.

In the film, the physicist (Cillian Murphy) after starting his initial research as a young boy takes to quantum physics, and goes on to lead the Manhattan Project for which he was denounced and even scorned by the government. But being who he was, he neither compromised on his values and principles, nor did he stop dreaming.

Considering the biography ‘American Prometheus’ took 25 years to be completed and is a 600-page tome, encapsulating all of it in three hours is rather unfair. But then, Nolan strives to tell us how condemnable the development of nuclear weapons and their existence can be. It is also a story deeply germane to what the invention eventually does to change the history of the world. Oppenheimer spent his remaining years opposing the militarization of the very weapons he invented, and destroyed himself in the bargain.

Filmed in a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, including sections in IMAX black-and-

white film photography, the film has utilized extensive practical effects and minimal computer-generated imagery.

Not made in a linear narrative, the protagonist’s life is shown in three main acts that are interwoven together. There are scenes from his college life, and later, two separate hearings, and of course, the process of creating the atomic bomb itself.

An important scene based on an insignificant meeting between Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) is almost missed until it appears that it is central to the narrative.

In a track shown there are different aspects of his life filmed. In one, there is a lot of criticism that Oppenheimer faces. Viewed from the perspective of Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.), a senior member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, the encounter sparks intrigue, leading him to obsess over its content.

An agitated Strauss holds a serious grievance against Oppenheimer for seemingly badmouthing him to Einstein in a conversation he views from afar at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, and publicly dismisses his bete noir’s concerns regarding the export of isotopes.

By exploiting these allegations at a hearing intended to remove Oppenheimer from any position of political influence, he makes sure Oppenheimer’s security clearance is revoked. Alongside, Oppenheimer’s perceived communist ties and

affair with fellow physicist Jean Tatlock (played by Florence Pugh) lead to his public fall from grace.

Strauss’ personal grievances against Oppenheimer get exposed, but it also leads to the physicist’s downfall. This section named ‘Fusion’ is in black and white, and is followed by another ‘Fission’.

Switching back and forth between black and white and color, Nolan tries to depict the difference between the objective (black and white) and subjective (color) points of view. As the two distinct storylines both Fusion and Fission offer different perspectives. But if one is not clued into these strategic divisions, it could leave one confused.

Nolan also doesn’t adhere to dates and details of traditional biopic storytelling; instead, he dives headlong into the advent and fallout of the nuclear arms race.

The entire mood is sombre and often leads to bleak moments that spell morose historical facts. But what is noteworthy is that it is an absolute delight to watch, more also as an adaptation that is not -- as it seems --fictionalized even one bit, so faithful to the original biography it appears to be. Not having read the book could be both advantageous and act as a detriment to one’s complete understanding of the film.

Music by Ludwig Goransson remains understated; Cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema is one of the film’s biggest assets.

The ensemble cast is exemplary. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular character, with Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife, Katherine ‘Kitty’ Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, Oppenheimer’s military handler, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, to name a few, are all a delight to watch. The supporting cast also includes Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.

Six food plating and presentation suggestions by experts

The artistic procedures of food plating and presentation turn a basic meal into an aesthetically pleasing and mouth-watering masterpiece. Mastering the art of food plating can take your culinary creations to new heights, whether you’re a home cook seeking to impress your guests or an aspiring chef looking to hone your talents. Food is not only the important stargazing factor but its plating plays an important role too. The way food is presented on a plate can enhance its visual appeal, stimulate the appetite, and even elevate the perceived taste. Chefs and culinary professionals understand the importance of thoughtful plating techniques to create visually stunning dishes that captivate diners.

Celebrity chef and founder of Palate Culinary Academy, Rakhee Vaswani, author and consultant celebrity chef Ananya Banerjee give six food plating and presentation suggestions that will help you take your culinary creations to the next level.

Choosing the right plate: In food plating and presentation, choosing the appropriate dish is crucial to improving the whole eating experience. Your culinary masterpiece is shown on the dish as a canvas. The dish’s visual appeal might be enhanced or diminished depending on its color, shape, and size. To attain the proper composition and balance, various dishes call for different plate styles. How the components of the meal are organized and divided depends on the size and shape of the plate. The star components of your cuisine might be better emphasized with the right platter. A textured or patterned plate can offer visual interest without detracting from the major pieces, as opposed to a plain white plate, which allows brilliant colors and detailed details to stand out.

Balance and Composition: Balance and composition are fundamental elements in food

plating and presentation, contributing to the overall visual appeal and aesthetic harmony of a dish. It produces a visually appealing appearance that grabs guests’ attention right away. You can ensure that the varied flavors and textures are evenly distributed around the plate by attaining balance and composition. Effective harmony and composition highlight the dish’s star ingredients or focal points. You may direct the diner’s attention and highlight the star elements by placing the important items in strategic locations, which will result in a visually compelling presentation.

The placement of the components on the plate should convey a sense of movement and flow, leading the eye from one piece to the next. As diners explore the many flavors and textures on the plate, this visual journey makes the dining experience more engaging and interesting.

Attention to detail: Attention to detail is of utmost importance in food plating and presentation as it elevates the overall dining experience and showcases your professionalism and commitment to excellence. Every component on the plate is expertly arranged when even the slightest details are paid attention to, which improves the dish’s aesthetic attractiveness. It indicates your commitment to making an enticing presentation that is aesthetically stunning.

Your culinary product exudes

quality and precision when you pay attention to the little things. You show your dedication to delivering a superior dining experience by meticulously arranging each ingredient, garnish, and sauce. Your culinary identity and brand are cultivated by paying attention to detail consistently throughout all of your plating endeavors. It creates a distinctive look and guarantees that each dish you serve adheres to a strict aesthetic and quality standard.

utensil Placement: Utensil placement is an often overlooked yet essential aspect of food plating and presentation. Utensils that are arranged properly add to the plate’s overall visual harmony. The diner’s comfort and practicality should come first when placing the utensils. The diner will be able to easily switch between different components of the dish if the utensils are placed in a convenient location and within easy reach.

Keep in mind that utensil placement may change depending on the cuisine served, the setting, and individual preferences. In order to achieve a polished and aesthetically acceptable presentation, it is important to establish a balance between aesthetics, practicality, and cultural factors.

layers & Heights: Using layers and heights in food plating and presentation is a powerful technique that adds dimension, visual interest, and sophistication to a dish. The use of layers and heights enables

cooks to express their artistic flair and originality. It gives you the chance to try out various plating methods, set-ups, and presentations, turning the dish into a gourmet masterpiece. In order to generate visual contrast on the plate, several pieces are layered with contrasting colors, textures, and shapes. Contrasting layers give the meal interest and excitement while also adding to its visual appeal.

use Edible Garnishes: Using edible garnishes in food plating and presentation adds a touch of artistry and enhances the overall dining experience. Edible garnishes offer the chance to enhance a dish’s bright colors, textures, and visual appeal. They can improve the plate’s presentation, making it appear more alluring and delicious. In addition to adding to the aesthetic appeal of a dish, garnishes can also improve its overall flavor profile.

A burst of freshness and aromatic notes can be added with fresh herbs, microgreens, or edible flowers. The possibility to add contrast and balance to the dish is provided by garnishes. By introducing various colors, shapes, and textures, they can provide a contrast to the primary elements.

For instance, delicate, vibrant green herbs can be used to contrast with hearty, earthy proteins, or red chili flakes can be used to provide a splash of color to a creamy white sauce. The significance of meal presentation and plating cannot be emphasized. Food has the ability to stimulate our senses and produce life-changing experiences in addition to merely sustaining our bodies. A basic meal may be turned into a piece of art that satisfies the senses and provides amazing culinary experiences by paying attention to every detail, from the arrangement of components to the choice of colors and textures.

What do green flags in a relationship look like?

we spend a lot of time trying to catch red flags so that we don’t get hurt or know when to leave a relationship. However, do we know how to point out what the green flags look like? Green flags are positive indicators that identify a healthy and successful bond.

shahzeen shivdasani, relationship expert and author of the book love, lust, and lemons helps one to identify what green flags should you be noticing:

open communication: For any relationship to work, effective communication is key! How well do the two of you communicate your wants and needs? How do you handle conflict? In every situation, if you are both willing to communicate openly and honestly with each other, then this a definitely a green flag and a quality that will help you both deepen your bond

Trustworthy and dependable: Trust is

another key component. A lot of people find it extremely hard to trust someone completely. It can be baggage that stems from experiences where they got their heart broken. For a relationship to thrive, both parties have to be able to trust each other and be reliable. This will strengthen your connection and create an environment that feels secure and safe.

Emotional support: Another important green flag to pay attention to is how well the two of you support each other. During tough times, do you feel heard and understood? Do you feel they give you empathy and compassion? Do they celebrate your successes? In a well-functioning relationship, you should always feel supported. This lets you know that you and your partner can handle life’s many challenges.

shared values and goals: In a thriving relationship you will notice that the couple sees eye to eye. Of course, there will be things they don’t agree on. However, how they view life and what they want from a partnership should align. When core values are the same it points towards a strong foundation that can grow in harmony. This helps with understanding one another more easily and also being able to compromise where needed.

Gratitude: Couples that take the time to complement one another for doing something for them, big or small, cultivate positivity. If they demonstrate

kindness and appreciation, then that is a green flag. Gratitude boosts an emotional connection and maintains a sense of mutual respect and love.

Personal space: Do they give you your space to grow? A really important green flag is also having a life outside of your relationship. It could be work, hobbies, or catching up with an old friend one on one. In a healthy bond, you let your partner have their space when required. Balancing your autonomy as well as your relationship will ensure that both parties feel fulfilled.

Adaptability: All relationships have their challenges. Partners who are open to change and can adapt demonstrate the qualities of a lifelong partner. How did they approach unexpected challenges? Are they willing to be flexible? Are they willing to address issues with you straight on and find a solution? Relationships thrive when couples can work through the hard times together when change might be required.

Just remember, relationships should make you feel safe and loved. If you are not experiencing any of the above green flags then this may not be the relationship for you. Stay attentive so you can identify these positive signs as they indicate that a bond is strong and can flourish. After all, there’s a reason even traffic lights allow you to move forward at that color.

Reality tV star kim kardashian spoke of her joy at being able to bring her son Saint and his friend to see Lionel Messi, a seven-time Ballon d’or winner, make a typically magical Inter Miami debut before he gave Saint a signed shirt as a gift.

Kim Kardashian has expressed her gratitude after Lionel Messi’s heroics on his Inter Miami debut gave her and son Saint West a night to remember, reports mirror.co.uk. The Reality TV star had a pitchside seat alongside sporting royalty including the MLS club’s co-owner David Beckham, basketball icon LeBron James and tennis legend Serena Williams. The 42-year-old star appeared to be enjoying the action as she witnessed a slice of US sporting history alongside her son and his friend. Around 27,000 packed into DRV PNK Stadium and waited until the 54th minute of proceedings to see former Barcelona hero Messi enter the fray alongside his ex-teammate Sergio Busquets. With the game seemingly heading for a 1-1 draw, Messi stepped up and curled in a stunning free-kick deep into stoppage time to give his side victory.

Saint, who is seven-years-old, was heard chanting his idol’s name alongside his pal, as the legendary Argentinian made his way off the pitch. The youngsters then had the honor of meeting Messi as he made sure to stop for a selfie with the pair. Clearly, the significance of the meeting was far from lost on Saint’s mum also, who made sure to capture some footage as a memento for the future. As part of the video released by Kardashian on her Instagram page, she simply captioned the memorable moment with the words: “Best days of their entire lives.”

Incredibly, the superstar’s generosity did not stop there either and he also signed an Inter Miami shirt for the youngster, with his mum also sharing a picture showing the jersey on social media. With Saint having sported a Herons shirt, with Messi on the back, for the game it is clear that this will have been a welcome addition to his collection of shirts. Messi was not the only football legend the children met during what was an extraordinary day for them at DRV PNK Stadium, with former Manchester United midfielder Beckham also having stopped to chat with the two boys. Johnny Depp sells his signed self-portrait for charity

The 60-year-old ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star came up with the idea for ‘Five’ in the studio of his close friend, social caricaturist Ralph Steadman in 2021, and it wasn’t until this year that he got the courage to share the artwork with the world, reports aceshowbiz. com.

He said in a press release, “It’s not the most comfortable thing doing a self-portrait. If the piece resonates with even just one person, this art has purpose.”

The $200 donation will go to Mental Health America, a leading community-based

non-profit charity dedicated to the promotion of mental health, well-being and illness prevention. Johnny

hailed the organization as “a wonderful facility and an extremely deserving cause; they do a lot of great work there.”

The art itself is a nod to a Christian Dior Parfums photograph in 2015 for the ‘Edward Scissorhands’ star’s Dior Sauvage fragrance shoot by creative director Jean-Baptiste Mondino.

The luxury brand has remained committed to ‘The Tourist’ star, even after his high-profile court cases, including against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Johnny commented, “He’s got a great eye. The great

thing about shooting with Jean-Baptiste Mondino is he will never look at any of his photographs or any of his work where the subject’s eyes aren’t somewhere else, or you see something behind the eyes, and Mondino is kind of a master of that kind of thing.”

Johnny returned to the world of music following the defamation trial with ‘Aquaman’ actress Amber, 37. As he awaited the verdict on his US defamation case, which ultimately went in his favor, the ‘Cry-Baby’ star performed shows with late rock legend and longtime friend, Jeff Beck.

All you need to know about dementia in dogs

This syndrome correlates with the aging of the dog’s brain, which causes them to eventually lose their sharp awareness of their surroundings, learning capabilities, responsiveness and even memory.

Canines that are diagnosed with Dog Dementia will then begin a long-term treatment of supportive care for this condition. Such care will consist of improving your dog’s living environment and health in order to maintain an ideal condition for improvement.

This will allow the Cognitive Decline to be delayed and not progress as quickly otherwise. Changes in exercise routine, playing time and also training, or needing to train again, will be introduced as well. Other adjustments that can be made to facilitate a dog with this condition is to provide night lights for your canine companion to navigate throughout the house easier in the dark. Place training pads near your dog so that there is a place for him or her to use the washroom in case of an emergency, where they cannot control their urination or bowel movement. Certain medications or behavioral treatments may also be advised by your veterinarian based on the individual case of your pet. Diet is also a key component to managing a better lifestyle. Certain supplements can also be added to the diet regiment in order to help with your dog’s cognitive function. Such as: Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Selenium, Beta Carotene, Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Omega-3 and Carnitine. Follow-up appointments with your veterinarian may be needed regularly.

Kajol on ‘Noyonika’: Woman has many facets, one can’t manage all

In today’s society, women are often burdened with the expectation of excelling in multiple roles, facing overwhelming societal pressure.

Women have always found themselves juggling various responsibilities, from being nurturing mothers and devoted partners to achieving success in their careers and managing household duties. Noyonika’s journey mirrors the experience of these women.

Talking about the same, Kajol said: “The great thing about Noyonika is that every woman identifies with her. As women, we are taught to be a good mother, a good wife, a good person and to fulfill all of these roles to the nth degree at every point in your life.”

“That’s where Noyonika was at, where she felt like she’s perfect at everything and at the same time when her world came crumbling down she realised that she can’t be good at everything, she cannot be a good wife and a good mother and a good person, there are so many facets and she cannot manage all those balls and she realises that it doesn’t matter at the end of day,” said Kajol.

She further said that Noyonika’s journey is what we all go through as women. “What we are juggling through as women, some come to it a little early in life and some a little later,” she added.

The gritty courtroom drama, ‘The Trial - Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha’ also stars Sheeba Chaddha, Jisshu Sengupta, Alyy Khan, Kubbra Sait and Gaurav Pandey in key roles.

Alia recounts how her tryst with acting started from school with theatre

actress alia Bhatt, who has been ruling the hearts of millions with her stellar performances, said on that her tryst with acting actually started from school.

The team of the recently released movie ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ -- lead pair of Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, and director Karan Johar -- were interacting with students for ‘India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Back To School’ series.

When asked about her school memories, Alia said, “I made some of the best memories in school... sometimes I like going back to my school days - hanging out with my friends by the water cooler, bunking class and what not. My tryst with acting actually started from there... I did theatre, took part in all possible competitions.”

“It feels great to be back to school, I feel nervous around my teachers and principal... I’d wish them good morning and stay out of their way, because I am actually very naughty at heart,” added Alia.

When asked if Karan Johar is like the character of Amitabh Bachchan from his movie ‘Mohabbatein’, or like Miss Braganza from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ when it comes to being a ‘principal’ of Bollywood, Alia said, “I think Karan is like Karan, there is no one like him. I think we need to create a new character for him.”

The trio engaged with over 50,000 students from 100 cities for the event through zoom call.

‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ marks the first collaboration between Ranveer and Karan. Also starring Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi in key roles, the film hit the theatres on July 28.

How to take care of your furniture during rainy season w

hile there is a constant call for the warm daylight and wide-open windows at one time of the day, but at the same time there is a strong urge to shut down the door and windows at the other. The entire shell of the space looks out for a fresh aesthetic that delves into practical, re-imagined layouts, along with an indulgent choice of décor that speaks for the vibe of the season.

The mood awakens our inner self to go in search of new design elements in the space. It offers an increased indoor time that only gives us more opportunities to revive the look of our space, preferably with colorful palettes and tidier statements that help us enjoy the slow, self-reflecting time we get. It’s the perfect time to sit back and fade into the ambience and make nothing but effortless ways to go with the flow of the season.

While it moves around leaving its hints of the humid air, it calls for exclusive care for our statement pieces. The unreliable weather and its take on the interior ambience may land us to make hasty decisions for our beloved pieces, especially the climate-sensitive finishes—for which we need to prepare ourselves with a material care routine. From quick fixes to smart spatial alterations, here are a number of things you can do to keep your material palettes well protected.

Looking out for the wooden elements:

Wood, being a naturally-sourced material, tends to absorb moisture and swell up—changing the aesthetic picture of wood which endears us to the material. There is a high chance for the wood statements to show up with visible cracks and cuts that make them further prone to termite attacks. As a counter to these cases, you can seal the

wooden floors, give a pesticide control measure to the built-in furnishings and add a layer of coatings and sealants to retain the originality of the wood. Much of this treatment should ideally be done before the monsoon season hits.

Making changes in the layout:

Walls become the gateway for every material damage that can come your way. Wooden installations turn dull and worn-out, wrought iron furnishings turn red with rust, copper accessories turn green and every other material has its own way of falling into the ill effects of moisture when they share close proximity to the easily-moistened walls creating damp corners and surfaces. Changing the layout of the space by introducing ample clearance between the walls and the furniture can save the day in such a situation. Try bringing more of island furniture setups that create a point of focus—the sofas, tea tables and floor lamps can come together as the central elements and create a stage for your best pieces. Well ventilated rooms can further help in moisture build up inside the house.

Embrace romanticism with the colors

Bringing romanticism in the monsoon style is another way of looking at the season’s character. You can take it forward with vivid natural colors, floral patterns and soft textures in a number of interior elements. Go for dainty wallpapers, textured flooring, canopy beds, arched closets, clustered luminaires, curved chaises, embroidered cushions, plush rugs and more that bring a charming yet restful mood into the space.

The saturated air of monsoon becomes a breeding ground for termites or other décor predators that are waiting to devour those wooden consoles and metal seaters handpicked by you. Certain varieties of polishes and paints can come and

Rainy season brings with it a dual feel when the exterior feels fresh and renewed but the interiors feel clogged with moisture.

season

become a second skin for the furniture to not only keep the pests at bay but also reimagine the look of your favorite pieces. Bring out the textured wood tables in a classic walnut brown, handwoven wicket seaters in a boho white and the antiquated wrought iron luminaires in a caviar black. You can also bring in some cheerful palettes to balance the dull monsoon mood with fresh corals, understated peaches or even bold neons as per your taste.

Retaining the fresh look in the fabrics: The interior textiles owe their radiance and freshness to the air around them. The still air of the season gets heavy with dampness and simply refuses to flow through the fabric, making more room for trapped air. This particularly affects the denser fur rugs, heavier velvet drapes and others that have rigid layers of weaves that are known to be fungi-favorites. While the easier way is to replace these fabrics with fresh breathable ones like sheer cotton, you can still choose to retain their fresh face with regular vacuuming rituals, linen spray routines and other that help them stay dry. You can also take the upholstered pieces closer to the window, balcony or any other space that invites good sunlight to keep them warmer and tidier. To exaggerate the warmth, more of white can be brought in the handloom door curtains, tasselled macrame décor and other light-hued elements that reflect light and make the most of every ounce of warm light you get. Monsoon gloom is something no one wants to fall into. You can escape it by keeping the space bright and open to natural light. Try going lighter with the curtains and drapes—drop your valences and other layers and go for neat trims of sheer cotton or organza silk that come with a beauty of their own as it lends a breath of fresh air in the spaces.

Adding resilience to the spatial layers:

Walls, floors and ceilings are

equally falling prey to the heavy downpours. The damp patches, withering surface finishes and the foul smell from the infestation become almost unavoidable when the space is left as such. Try giving an added layer of protection like textured tiles on the balcony floors that also help you have a skid-proof walk on the balcony or a fresh set of blinds, a row of moisture-absorbing plants or a simpler runner by the doors, French windows and balconies to mark the dry envelope of the interior. The indoor moisture levels shouldn’t ideally be more than 50% and this can also be prevented by using dehumidifiers allowing the indoors to remain crisp and fresh.

Add a dose of fragrance to the still air

The petrichor of the seasons can be ethereal and overwhelming at the same time. The changing nature of the interior materials and the mere absence of regular airflow can affect the sense of smell and bring the interior game down a notch. This is where the scented candles in vintage candle stands and reed diffusers in exquisite glassware come into play. You can also go straight for a dehumidifier to counter the dampness or take the green route with moisture-absorbing houseplants like a flowering peace lily or a scented purple orchid in textured ceramic planters.

Sink into the mood with relaxing furniture

Monsoon time is a reminder of comfort. Embrace it with relaxing furniture pieces that make a statement with their ergonomic backrests and inclined silhouettes. You are free to include more of hefty recliners, cocoon

swings and more that give a cozy vibe without being loud and characterful. You can also go for bean bags, floor cushions, fluffy beddings and more that adapt to your posture and keep you snug inside out. Try accessorizing these with windchimes or dreamcatchers that sway with the wind and keep the hygge vibe alive.

Make a minimal, spruced-up statement

The season is all about going light with everything. You would want to go back to minimalism styles that celebrate the voids and make more room for the air to flow through. It is time to bring boxy statement seaters, sleek line-profile tables, freestanding wireframe lamps, floating open shelves and more that show off their lean profiles and seamlessly blend into the space.

Prioritize your shades

Indian monsoons are seen as beauty and rage, all in one frame. This is the time when the windows call for all those outdoor shades, indoor blinds, multi-layered curtains and sheer shutters designed to watch over your space. The cloudburst and drizzles are cloaked in all different forms—intricate finespun drapery, clean-lined bamboo louvres, woven jute rollers and quilted curtains have a unique take on the interior persona. The sheer choices befit the spaces overlooking good vistas and lighter shower, while opaque alternatives become the first choice for a rougher micro climate. With an aesthetic overlay of motifs, botanical prints or chintz patterns, these shades are everything we need on a rainy day.

Keep things dry and free

from clutter

The palettes are easy to get muddled with the still air of the season. Ward off the damp patches with drier, spruced up finishes that comfort you inside-out, amidst the stubborn gloom from the outdoors. Mattified textures, dainty brush strokes and uniform palettes signal the counterpoise of austerity in the space. Furniture pairs break up for accommodating a decluttered layout and there is more room for standalone bespoke pieces, esthetically spaced-out for an airy ambience. Humidifiers further promise a dry vent while rugs and carpets vow to guard the floors. More air and less drear makes a stunning monsoon home.

The once-in-a-year experience can be overwhelming and indulgent at the same time. It is the time for introducing an artisanal coffee table along the balconies, relaxing reading nooks along the window bays and a closeknit furniture setup staged in the living. Share the cheer with your plants that love the overdose of moisture, bring them closer to your seats and give a whiff of rejuvenating scent from the flowering, aromatic houseplants. Snake plants, Boston Ferns, jade, palm and other hydrophilic greens soak up the excess moisture, leaving ambient indoors. More of interior indulgence comes from a dose of nostalgia reflecting along the souvenirs lining the shelves, lore hidden in the artistic centrepieces and everything bespoke. Listen to the mood and go with a free flow of choices that rewrite all the thumb rules in design. The sensorial connection with the outdoors tops the list.
