Snapzleek

Self-defence spray with reliable and intuitive operation, offering discreet everyday protection for women.

Note: Independent project.

Sleek Protection in a Snap.

Fear is especially evident among women.

The fear of crime disproportionately burdens females, restricting their ability to pursue life, liberty, and happiness.

Snapzleek aims to enhance women's sense of security by providing a self-defense spray that's dependable in critical moments, especially when facing potential threats and fighting back is the only option.

Research showed women focused on areas outside the path more often than men, reflecting their broad experience with fear of crime, particularly personally violent or sexual crimes resulting from stalking, prowling, or loitering in poorly lit areas. (https://doi.org/10.1089/ vio.2023.0027)

Intuitive launching and accurate aiming in extreme panic

Completely orientation-insensitive: operable with either hand, never upside down.

1. Grab Deter and neutralize the threat in a snap.

Other self-defece sprays: Prone to failure in panic

2. Point & Snap

Protection with vivid colors

Snapzleek's symmetric 2-unit design allows users to further personalize and tailor the color of their own Snapzleek, making it uniquely theirs.

Other self-defence sprays: mostly black with a masculine appearance.

Discreet and Sleek

With its discreet, sleek design, Snapzleek blends seamlessly with a woman’s attire or belongings.

Attach on bag or purse with retractable lanyard.

Initial release: pastel rainbow, black and white, camouflage.

Shooting mechanism

The innovative mechanism enables Snapzleek’s intuitive, orientationinsensitive launching with just a snap of the thumb.

Internal details

Snap one of the four tabs on the cap with either thumb toward either direction.

The cap will pop up and stay at 90° firingready position.

Snapzleek features a symmetric, dual-cartridge design that aligns the shooting direction with the long axis of catridge, ensuring the spraying nozzle is easily directed toward the attacker.

Push the cap over 90° and Snapzleek will fire.

M3*8 self-tapping pan head screw

The cap engages with the nozzle pressing mechanism in its 90° rotated position. The cap remains securely in its closed position, held in place by a spring that pushes it against another part.

When the cap is rotated further over 90°, the nozzle is forced down and release the spray agent.

Clear PET plastic.

20ml cartridge filled with paralisant pepper spray and paint.

No undercut on any part: all plastic parts are suitable for injection molding mass manufacturing.

Ideation

Various intuitive interactions were explored. Snapzleek is designed to be discreet, sleek, and cute, making it more appealing for female users to carry daily without feeling any stigma.

The completely orientation-insentative option was selected.

Mechanism & Assembly testing

SLA 3D printing parts were ordered, with the CAD model continuously updated throughout the iterative process.

• Configuring the size and clearance of parts

• Operation smoothness testing

• Assembling process testing

Tanky

The Urban All-terrain Walking Augmenting Shoes

Note: MSc Integrated Industrial design major project. Individual work.

Redesign of a novel personal electric vehicle

Tanky is a redesign of the Moonwalkers with the aim to improve the comfort and stability on urban pavements such as cobbles. Moonwalkers are a pair of novel "walking enhancing shoes" that was released in 2023. It's adaptive AI drivetrain controls DC motors to increases users' walking speed up to 2.5 times without the need of any remote controller.

My benchmark product: The Moonwalkers walking augmenting shoes by Shift Robotics.

Exploring the brief

This project has an open brief. Therefore, I chose the topic I am interested in - personal mobility. After conducted a series of research and selection, the brief converged from "A product that improves the commuting experience for public transportation users." to a more refined "Redesigning walking augmenting shoes (Moonwalkers shoes) for cobblestone surface."

Preliminary research about commuters' needs. Qualitative data collected from online forums and research papers.

Surveying 5 types of personal vehicle products available, including folding ebikes, folding bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards, Moonwalkers shoes.

Improving the commuting experience?

→Needs of commuters:

• Portability is criticalless stress for transit, parking, storing.

• Easy maintenance

• Better be motorised

Analysis and comparism of the 5 types of personal vehicles based on portability, road safety, ease of maintenance, comfortness...etc.

Moonwalkers walking augmenting shoes scored the highest.

→ Redesigning Moonwalkers shoes is the path forward.

Refining the design challenge

Detailed reseach and critique of the Moonwalkers shoes were conducted to identify the pros and cons, or underlying design opportunities of the product.

Prototyping and Testing

Model of the Moonwalkers and Tanky's wheels are made at 1:1 scale. Both designs are tested on the same controlled cobble surface. Performance are captured by a bespoke arduino accelerometer/gyroscope data logger; then compared with each other after data processing.

New brief: A Moonwalker-inspired walking augmenting shoes for rough urban pavements like cobbestone.

Research of relevant technology and performance requirement of the for developing Tanky's wheel system.

Prototype of Tanky's wheel system

Model of Moonwalker's wheel system

Each wheel design was tested 30 times on the same track.

Optimised Arduino accelerometer/ gyroscope data logger.

Raw accecleration/ gyroscope data collected every 2 millisecond in each test.

Data processing with python. Obtaining pitch/ roll data, plotting, statistical summary...etc.

Plots and aggregate data ready for analysis and comparism.

Results

Tanky is able to significantly reduce and smooth out the impact the user feels when walking on cobbles. Providing users with a more comfortable and confident experience when walking on rough pavements.

Accelerations (ax, ay, az) - depicting impact force

* Both designs are tested on different surfaces iteratively for 30 times. It's observed that with Tanky, the standard deviation of vertical acceleration is on average 343% lower, and the maximum vertical accleration is 242% lower.

* Plots above are randomly picked out of the total 120 tests to demonstrate that unlike Tanky, Moonwalkers' vertical accelerations on cobbles are significantly higher to its own values on flat grunds.

Tanky can decrease the overall fluctuations of tilting and vibration when walking on cobbles, reducing the chance for the user to have an ankle sprain.

Pitch & Roll angles - depicting stability

pitch (side tilting) on cobbles

roll (front-rear tilting) on cobbles

* Both designs are tested on different surfaces iteratively for 30 times. It's observed that with Tanky, changes in both side tilting and front-rear tilting are less dramatic

Finalising the design

After verifying the performance of the airless tires + tank track design, further design tweaks were made. Focus group discussion was held to gather user aesthetic preference and opinion.

The design of Tanky was finalised with cost estimation and updated Product Design Specification documentation.

Several potential flaws were discovered after tested with the physical model. Changes are made in the CAD to reflect those discoveries.

Focus group discussion provided valuable user opinions regarding the product aesthetic preference.

Cost estimated to be around £500. Both offthe-shelf parts and manufacturing cost are considered.

ect Draw/ Pin

Maximum convenience in all paying scenarios for all users with Draw - coin sorting case/ Pin - modular wallet.

Cash payments are common

According to government data*, 37.9% of spending in Taiwan are still done by cash in 2023. Therefore, everyone still carriesboth cash and cards when going out, making wallet an indispensable accessory for different payment scenario.

Phase I - Draw focused on making coin accessing and receiving faster and easier, since “coin economics” like night markets and street foods are important parts in Taiwanese people’s life.

Phase II - Pin focused on designing an open source modular leather bifold wallet that adapts and evolves, empowering users to develop the wallet that best suits their habit.

Everyday shopping scenario require different methods of payment, some are strictly cash-only.

User Survey for Phase I - Draw(n=50)

• Despite innovative wallets are widely available, almost all of them either make users store coins in a simple pouch compartment, or tell users to find another container.

• 45% of participants store their coins in another container or their pocket; separate from their wallets.

• On average, people carry 7.7 coins with them when going out.

Ideation and prototype of the coin sorting case

• Coin case is a relevant product with actual need.

• The container should be able to contain at least 8 coins with various sizes.

Mechanism verified with 3D printing.
