its semiquincentennial, a word worth remembering for your next trivia night: It means our nation is turning 250 years old.

Milestones like this are a good opportunity for reflection—on where we’re going and where we’ve been. When our Founding Fathers drafted the Declaration of Independence, they signed a powerful promise: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Celebrating 250 years is a meaningful time to question whether we have lived up to these ideals. Doing so doesn’t diminish what we have achieved; it’s how we learn from the past and build a better tomorrow. America has always been a work in progress, and it’s crucial that “We the People” can work together.

In this issue, travel writer Susan Kraus takes us inside the Smithsonian Institution. With more than 150 million items on display throughout its 21 museums, the institution offers a meaningful look at American history. Most importantly, admission to the museums is free; after all, its archives belong to the people.

We also meet Pantaleon Florez III. Writer Rochelle Valverde chats with him about his work as an educator, ethnobotanist and owner of Maseualkualli Farms in North Lawrence. By cultivating seeds passed down through generations and reviving traditional Mexica farming practices, Florez is reconnecting with the values of those who came before him.

His work on Maseualkualli Farms—“the people’s farm”—is another reminder that looking back at history is about reclaiming our ancestors’ ideals.

High Society Electrifies Lawrence Lawrence has long been a bastion for roots music, hosting such events as the city’s annual Kansas State Fiddling & Picking Championship in South Park or the monthly Americana music showcase at Northside Social. But the stunning debut of the quartet High Society at the end of 2024 suggests the city might also become a home for electric blues.

High Society’s shows have been packed with fans hankering to hear some soulful bends and searing cries. With Will Dinkel on bass, Jason Slote on drums, and Eric Mardis and Michael Hamm on guitar and vocals, the band plays both original songs and popular covers, from Bobby Rush’s “Chickenheads” and BB King’s “The Thrill Is Gone” to Junior Parker’s “Mystery Train.”

“We’ve played together in different configurations over the years,” Mardis says. “[The idea for] High Society started in early 2024, after Michael and I schemed to put something together again.”

This scheming led the foursome to put together a list of blues songs to learn and rehearse before their official debut as High Society.

“It’s exciting!” Hamm says. “Blues and bluesstyle music are so fundamental and influential to every other style of Americana music. I feel like we’re keeping our music minds and ears open when deciding new songs to play, when writing originals, and in our approach to performing.”

“Our guitar styles are very complementary, and this rhythm section is so killer,” Mardis adds. “The group is a joy.”

Dinkel and Slote agree that guitarists Hamm and Mardis are the driving force behind High Society, using this new project as an outlet for a lot of the guitar-focused material they’ve stacked up over the years. Slote, in particular, has fantastic musical and production suggestions, Dinkel adds.

“I tend to just sit in the back and enjoy the ride,” Dinkel jokes.

But everyone in the group brings something of value to the table.

“Eric and Mike are extremely talented and creative and have crafted really great songs that are super fun to play,” Slote says. “Those two have written all of our originals so far, but we all contribute to the process, composing instrumental parts and sharing ideas about arrangements.”

“It’s definitely a group effort, with much of the set order coming together during rehearsals,” Hamm says.

The World, Bound in Words A KU scholar traces the surprisingly bookish origins of the phrases we use every day

In

the preface of his newest book, author Jonathan P. Lamb invites readers to turn over a new leaf. He’s not asking readers to alter their way of life, but, literally, to turn the page—what we also call a leaf.

This play on words immediately gets to the heart of How the World Became a Book in Shakespeare’s England (Cambridge University Press, 2025), which examines the influence of books on how people talk about the world.

“We tend to use book metaphors all the time, often without even realizing we’re using a book metaphor,” Lamb says. “When we say, ‘turn over a new leaf,’ we’re not necessarily imagining a book. That’s just how we talk about personal reformation. But in Shakespeare’s time, people were well aware they were using book metaphors.

The book metaphor was alive.”

In his book, Lamb gives thousands of examples of how the invention of the printing press created a printsavvy culture, forever altering how Shakespeare and his contemporaries spoke about the world—and how we still speak about it today. When we utter such sayings as “I see your point,” “bound up with one another,” “out of sorts,” “uppercase” or “stereotyping,” we are unknowingly using bookish language.

Lamb, a professor of English at the University of Kansas, has lived and worked in Lawrence for the past

15 years. He is an early modernist whose research and teaching focus on Shakespeare, history of the book and digital research methods. He is also the author of Shakespeare in the Marketplace of Words (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

“One of the things that I love to talk about when I teach—that really matters to me as a professor and scholar—is that the past is not this kind of neutral, dead, boring thing,” Lamb says. “The cultural past, including but not limited to Shakespeare, is incredibly rich and much more proximate than we often realize to our own time and the kinds of questions we’re asking.”

Lamb began research on this book in 2018. With a team of graduate student researchers, he spent two years finding and documenting around 5,000 examples of bookish language from the early modern period. Lamb notes that this work would not have been possible without library resources such as Early English Books Online.

Among these thousands of examples, a particularly fun one comes from a character in John Fletcher and Philip Massinger’s play The Elder Brother, who wants a pie “in folio.” Here, “folio,” a term for the largest common book size, is used playfully.

“What he means is he wants a really big pie,” Lamb says. “Or someone could be a liar ‘in folio,’ which means they’re a really big liar.”

After completing the research phase, Lamb began writing the book in 2022, a process that took about a year and a half. When asked about his favorite part, Lamb grins and says that he is pleased with the book as a whole, and recommends certain chapters for readers with specific interests.

Readers interested in race should turn to chapter 7, “When Print Was White.” To explore the Book of Nature, a prominent metaphor that frames the natural world as a divine text, read chapter 6, “The World Is a Book.” For an analysis of sensory language, including phrases like “getting a taste of a book” or “I see your point,” see chapter 5, “The Bookish Sensorium.” As for the most fun chapter, Lamb says chapter 3, “Book Size and Information Management,” really digs into book metaphors, including his personal favorite: “bound up with.”

Although his book is academic in nature, Lamb notes that you don’t need a PhD to read it. “It’s not like a scientific article where you have to know all the insider codes,” he says. “I was trying to write for a broad spectrum of readers.”

Laura Mielke, professor of English and chair of the English Department at KU, says the scale of the examples in the book makes it both fun and impressive.

“He writes a book the same way he teaches a class. There’s sophisticated scholarship … but it’s interwoven with references to things about life today,” Mielke says. “He has witty asides. He likes to end a paragraph with a sentence that makes you either scratch your head or laugh a little. So you learn a lot from this remarkable project … but you also just get to be in this playful, productive mode with him as he explores.”

read A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was then that he decided to change his major from computer science to English.

“Computer programming is about getting things as precise and as unambiguous as possible.

Shakespeare’s language is the exact opposite,” Lamb says. “He’s still incredibly precise when he uses words, but those words are never straightforward or easy, and the language is hard. Looking back now, I realize what I really came to love about Shakespeare is how hard it is.”

Shakespeare’s comedy about love and mischief made such a big impact on Lamb that he always includes it in his “Introduction to English Studies” syllabus. As for which of Shakespeare’s other works he recommends, he thinks more people should read Love’s Labour’s Lost.

“It’s a great play because it’s a comedy, but it doesn’t end in marriage,” Lamb says. “Lately, I’ve started to think about Love’s Labour’s Lost as Shakespeare’s first and best attempt to understand what we call entertainment value.”

Lamb is currently working on a critical edition of Love’s Labour’s Lost, which uses a lot of bookish language, for Cambridge University Press’s new series of Shakespeare plays. He expects it will be published in 2027 or 2028.

For aspiring writers, Lamb stresses the importance of making the time to work on your craft.

“It seems like the people who publish books just put in the time,” he says. How the World Became a Book was written in only a year and a half because he wrote every day.

He also reminds writers to consider their audience, which is something his students occasionally forget.

“A switch turns where they realize they’ve been writing to the ether. They’ve been in their own head, and they actually have to start to imagine an audience,” Lamb says. “People read books … imagining those people …, that’s really important.”

Lamb imagines his readers laughing, being moved, critically thinking about his book’s claim, and enjoying “confronting the strange familiarity of a culture that could otherwise seem so foreign.”

Louis’ Legacy The passing of Louis Copt last spring left a void in Lawrence’s art community, yet his vision and influence remain

L

ast spring, Kansas lost both a great artist and a remarkable person. Louis Copt, an acquaintance and collaborator of mine, was well known in Lawrence for his painting. An energetic and vibrant personality, he primarily painted in oil on canvas, focusing on prairie themes and landscapes. He died at the age of 76 in May 2025.

I am grateful to have known him and his wife, Phyllis Copt, for many years.

When I was writing about Louis’ prolific career, Phyllis graciously shared the archive of videos, articles and photographs she had gathered over the years. In reviewing them, I quickly saw how highly Louis was regarded in Lawrence and beyond. Faced with such a legacy, I began to question how to do him justice. One thing was for certain: Louis was deeply involved in the Lawrence community and cherished its people and this place.

Reflections Creative from an early age, Louis grew up in Emporia near the Flint Hills, where he was drawn to the beauty of the prairie. His best-known series, paintings of prairie fires, stems from this personal connection. Phyllis remembers chasing the smoke from burns to watch the flames with Louis. In his

obituary, Phyllis wrote, “To him, they weren’t just dramatic and beautiful. They were a metaphor for renewal and resilience.”

Today, Louis’ work can be found in numerous private and public collections—you may have even passed one of his public murals without realizing it.

Most recently, the Spencer Museum of Art added one of Louis’ paintings from 2020, Fire Reflections, to its collection, making it the museum’s first painted portrayal of the prairie fire process.

“Louis brought greater awareness to Kansas as a historic landscape, elevating the understanding of the ancient practice of prairie burning into something that Kansas students could recognize and appreciate,” says Spencer Museum curator Susan Earle. “He had a magnetic personality … bringing together his love of Kansas barns and fields with his talent.”

The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art in Manhattan has also acquired several of Louis’ watercolors. “Louis was a painter who understood the prairie inside and out,” says Marianna Museum director Kent Michael Smith. “His work never treated Kansas as a backdrop or a symbol. It was a lived place shaped by weather, fire and time. Through his careful attention to light and horizon, he gave visual form to the rhythms of the Flint Hills and helped generations of viewers see familiar landscapes with renewed respect.”

Louis graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor’s degree in art in 1971, the same year he and Phyllis were married. A lasting symbol of his artistry is the wedding ring he designed and made for her. He crafted the unique piece using Phyllis’ high school ring and a pair of 14-carat gold earrings. On their 25th wedding anniversary, when the couple had more savings, he added a diamond to the original band.

“He could do about anything,” Phyllis says.

“He never lacked for ideas and was always problem solving. He would try something new or different. He had fun with it.”

After graduation, he worked as a photographer for the Emporia Gazette before traveling the world with Phyllis—they visited Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

When Phyllis earned a teaching job in Lawrence, she and Louis moved there in 1976. Prior to becoming a full-time artist, he worked for Maupintour, a Lawrencebased travel company, where he handled advertising and marketing, and led art tours. Soon, he left the corporate world behind.

He left to study Chinese watercolor and calligraphy for a summer semester with Professor Diana Kan at the Art Students League of New York. Kan helped Louis design his “chop,” a unique seal traditionally used by Chinese artists to sign their work. Under Kan’s tutelage, he spent many hours refining his brush technique and building a portfolio.

“He was so prolific,” says artist and sculptor Lori Norwood, who is also the Copts’ good friend. “Every day, no bones about it, he would get up and paint.

He had a sense of curiosity and excitement, and a willingness to experiment without fear. He approached [his art] with pragmatic determination.”

Although he painted primarily in oils and watercolors, he was also skilled in a range of other media, including pastels, lithography, acrylics, glass and resin.

“I was especially a fan of his watercolors,” Norwood adds.

This talent is especially evident in his later studies of the classic Kansas barn. When asked about these paintings, he said they were inspired by his grandparents’ barn, where he spent much of his childhood.

“Louis wasn’t an isolated person. He was super involved in this community. He was a fixture,” Norwood says. “When I think about his work, it is layered with this understanding. It’s never just a picture I am looking at out of context; it’s about us.”

At his celebration of life, Louis’ son, Nate Copt, recalled a quote that had hung over his father’s easel for as long as he could remember: “The price of success is eternal vigilance.”

“It summed up the way he worked, the way he lived and the passion he brought to everything he did,” Nate said at the celebration. “He believed in showing up fully, doing the hard work and staying committed to what mattered. That vigilance shaped his art, his relationships and the example he set for me and so many others.”

This commitment to his craft defined Louis as an artist and led him to be named the Governor’s Artist by the Kansas Arts Commission in 2011.

Although I knew a single article could never fully encompass all of Louis Copt’s accomplishments, I learned that his life and work inspired others to live fearlessly. I remain hopeful that the fire Copt so masterfully painted will forever burn bright.

The Lawrence Farmers Market is the oldest operating farmers market in Kansas. For half a century, it has set up shop in various parking lots to provide Lawrencians with locally sourced fruits, vegetables, flowers, honey, eggs, meat and more.

Despite its overwhelming success over the years, it’s currently facing many challenges. Disruption from construction projects and downtown events has contributed to unreliable parking, limited bathroom access and few storage options.

war is being fought in the Kansas River from Lawrence’s Bowersock Dam to where it empties into the Missouri River.

The enemy? Silver carp. This fish native to Asia is threatening the natural biodiversity of the Kansas River, its tributaries and possibly its nearby lakes. The invasive species also threatens eastern Kansas’ multimilliondollar recreational fishing and boating industries, as well as the boaters themselves.

Liam Odell, an invasive carp biologist at the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), says silver carp can weigh up to 20 pounds in Kansas waters and travels in tight schools that can number into the hundreds. They often jump out of the water when startled by passing motorboats, reaching up to 10 feet in the air. Odell has seen silver carp bloody the faces of unsuspecting boaters.

In past interviews, Duane Chapman, a former fish biologist with the United States Geological Survey in Missouri, has talked about watching silver carp knock people off boats. These leaping fish have been responsible for many broken jaws, broken ribs and even concussions.

Unfortunately, total eradication from the lower reaches of the Kansas River is probably impossible because of their huge populations in the Missouri River, Odell says. Instead, biologists’ goal has been to reduce the number of silver carp where they already swim and keep them from moving further up the river.

“We’ve basically drawn a line at the Bowersock Dam and don’t want them to get past there,” Odell says.

“To date, no silver carp have been found above the Bowersock. We’ve already removed around 100,000 pounds of silver carp from the lower reaches of the Kansas River.”

Large silver carp populations above the Bowersock Dam would give these fish an opportunity to swim through tributaries to the dams of some of Kansas’ largest and most popular lakes, including Perry, Tuttle Creek, Milford and Wilson. Those lakes and their state parks annually draw millions of anglers and recreational boaters.

“It could be very serious the first time somebody on a Jet Ski collides with a big carp while going 30 mph,” Odell says. “We don’t want the same problems other states are already facing.”

moving into the lakes. Playing loud sounds into the water has also been effective, and scientists are monitoring lake water samples for silver carp DNA. In the meantime, many boats on the Illinois and Ohio Rivers have been encased in strong metal cages to protect occupants from jumping carp.

The Enemy During the 1970s, America’s aquaculture industry imported four species of carp—silver, bighead, grass and black—to the United States to remove impurities from their waters and their wastewater treatment plants. But things didn’t go as planned; the fish soon escaped confinement and found their way into the Mississippi River.

Chapman says the escaped carp had little effect on the Mississippi River system until back-to-back highwater years made for perfect spawning conditions. The fish quickly spread.

Eating more than 20 percent of their body weight in plankton daily, silver carp competes with native fish for similar food sources. They also grow too large too quick—up to 12 pounds in just their first year— for most native predators to eat. Their dominating presence could lead to total collapse of important bait fish populations.

Billions of dollars have been pledged on the national, state and local levels to keep silver carp from getting into the Great Lakes. Scientists are currently trying electrical and bubble shields to block fish from

Silver Carp in the Kansas River Silver carp were first found in the Kansas River in 1991, near its confluence with the Missouri River. Then—as it remains today—most of the silver carp were concentrated below a low-head dam in Edwardsville, roughly 14 miles from the confluence and 37 miles from the Bowersock Dam. Silver carp have been seen trying to jump over the Bowersock Dam, but biologists say none have succeeded. Plans call for screen- or gate-like structures to be put on the north powerhouse of the dam to prevent jumping fish from making it over the north powerhouse. The fear is that anglers in the upper reaches of the Kansas River could mistake silver carp for young gizzard shad as they net bait for fishing and unknowingly introduce these problematic fish to new waters.

Biologists have gradually learned the best ways to remove silver carp from the Kansas River. In early 2022, a commercial fisherman was hired to use giant nets to remove the invasive fish. Biologists at the KDWP also used the technique but say it can be time-consuming because other species caught in the nets must be removed and released.

Biologists also used electrofishing, which sends electricity from a generator into the water. Stunned fish float toward the surface, where they are then scooped up. But Odell says it’s labor intensive to scoop individual fish aboard the boat and that many stunned fish revive and swim away before they can be netted.

Since late 2022, Odell and his helpers have tried a new method known as “electrified dozer trawl” that combines electrofishing with netting. A large johnboat (a flat-bottomed boat) slowly motors along, putting electricity into the water. A net hanging from the boat’s bow collects the stunned fish. Done properly, the catch is almost exclusively silver carp. On a cold November

afternoon, Odell and others netted 120 silver carp during a quick demonstration. The fish are quickly euthanized and dropped overboard.

“It’s good to keep a lot of that biomass in the river,” says Chris Steffen, aquatic invasive species coordinator with the KDWP. “Those fish took a lot of nutrients from the river. Putting them back puts a lot of those nutrients back into the water.”

Some states are finding uses for the invasive fish.

Private enterprises, with government help in Illinois and Missouri, are experimenting with turning silver carp into products such as pet food and fertilizers. Cut into chunks, silver carp are already a popular bait with anglers, especially those targeting gigantic blue and flathead catfish.

The state of Illinois even renamed silver carp “copi,” hoping to shift its claim to fame from invasive species to delicious table fare. Biologists are working with restaurants and fish markets to find culinary uses for copi, as it’s already one of the most popular fish eaten across Asia. Odell and Steffen have eaten the fish and say it can be good with proper preparation. Unfortunately, there are no markets for copi near the Kansas River.

“It would be nice if we could do something else, to put them to good use,” Steffen says.

“Unfortunately, the logistics of all of it just don’t work as far as the time and money for transportation.” Possible options continue to be explored.

Steffen and Odell say they’re pleased with the results of the intensive netting. They believe the river is healing as more and more silver carp are removed.

“It’s all anecdotal, but it looks like we have fewer silver carp,” Odell says. “We’re also seeing more gizzard shad. There was a time we almost couldn’t find any. Some native fishes also seem to be getting bigger, which means they’re getting more food.

I’m confident we’re seeing some positive changes.”

‘For the Increase and Diffusion of Knowledge’

The Smithsonian museums are not just buildings of artifacts, but institutions built on an ideal to share our nation’s history and culture with everyone

In

1835, respected British scientist James Smithson bequeathed more than $500,000 to the United States—the largest gift the nation had ever received—to establish the Smithsonian Institution. The bequest was unexpected, as Smithson had never once visited the U.S. This gift was contingent on a unique clause in his will, written in 1826, which named his nephew as the primary beneficiary. It stated that if his nephew should die without an heir, the estate would go to the U.S., “to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.”

After Smithson died in 1829, this improbable condition was met when his nephew died just six years later without producing an heir. Why Smithson left such a legacy, trusting a foreign government to follow his wishes, has never been explained. But today, the Smithsonian Institute remains the world’s largest complex of museums and research and educational centers: 21 museums, 14 education and research centers, and the National Zoo. Nearly all of its museums are located in Washington, D.C. Open 364 days a year, closed only Christmas Day, they are free to the public.

responsibility to ensure that history and science—truth and facts—are presented without censorship or bias.

Discover Your Wonder Visiting the Smithsonian museums during my recent trip to Washington D.C. left me with a feeling of wonder. The buildings themselves are imposing, almost overwhelming, but the staff inside is helpful and welcoming. So much expertise, experience and planning have gone into creating these continually evolving exhibits designed to engage visitors. I left each one with more knowledge, yet aware that there is always more to learn.

It was raining during my visit, and although I hadn’t prioritized visiting the Asian art exhibits, I ducked into the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art to escape the bad weather. Sitting alone in the small Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room, filled with images, ornate altars, statuaries and ritual items, immersed in the sounds of softly chanting monks, remains one of my favorite memories at the Smithsonian.

My daughter’s dream of seeing the pandas at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo finally came true during this visit. To my surprise, I found myself just as excited as she was.

It Belongs to Us On our last day, we took the metro to the intersection of 8th and G Streets to visit a holiday market. Live music, food trucks and dozens of booths were in full swing on a street adjacent to the National Portrait Gallery, a Smithsonian museum not located on the National Mall. We shopped, ate, listened to music and walked around the gallery.

The entrance opens into a massive, covered atrium filled with trees, tables and chairs. There, two dozen women sat in a long circle talking, knitting and embroidering. This wasn’t a structured class, but a gathering place for women to learn from one another. In other circles, I spied book clubs and similar groups. Even more people filled the small tables, working intently on open laptops. None appeared to be tourists.

The courtyard was, in essence, their backyard. They carried a sense of ownership, as they should. It’s a part of the Smithsonian, and these amazing spaces belong to everyone.

Smithsonian Strategies It’s impossible to see all of the Smithsonian museums in a week. For your first visit, focus your attention on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Twelve museums reside on this stretch of land, including the Museum of Natural History and the Air and Space Museum. Visit si.edu/ visit/museums for more information.

Although entrance to any Smithsonian museum is free, a few do require a timed-entry pass, which can be reserved online. Don’t wait until the last minute to book these. Make reservations for what you want to see as soon as possible, and adjust your reservations later if your schedule changes. Pro tip: The morning rush thins out by mid-afternoon.

Smithsonian museums prohibit open food and drink containers in their galleries. Because cafeterias can be pricey, often running $60 to $70 for a family of four, my advice is to stash some granola bars, pack sandwiches inside clear baggies, and bring sealed water bottles. Staff check bags at the door, but these items are usually not a problem.

Hunker down and enjoy a food break in a designated space for eating, like a cafeteria or courtyard.

I was delighted to find Amelia Earhart’s memorabilia at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. During my visit, I also learned about Jacqueline Cochran, Erin Sills, Joan Cuneo and Alice Huyler Ramsey. How had I never heard of these amazing women whose broken records echoed Earhart’s?

I discovered quite a few artists at the Smithsonian American Art Museum as well, including Emery Blagdon and Domingo Ulloa.

Blagdon was a Nebraska farmer who spent decades filling a shed with more than 400 different practical materials and “earth elements.” He called it The Healing Machine and believed these components could heal pain and illness when aligned with the phases of the moon. He did not see himself as an artist, but his work is now considered folk art.

Ulloa’s painting Bracero depicts Mexican laborers enlisted by the United States to fill agricultural labor shortages during World War II. The program stands as a reminder that the United States has welcomed migrant workers and valued their contributions to our culture and economy, but they have not always been treated humanely. Seen today, this painting invites reflection on whether a similar—more humane and accountable—model could be functional, fair, and much less costly than sweeping deportations.

F

or Pantaleon Florez III, a walk through Maseualkualli Farms is a journey through time. Here, the corn is not the common yellow type, but heritage varieties such as Centli Guamare, a speckled white-andpurple corn from the central highlands of Mexico.

His connection to it spans millennia and is a direct link to his Mexica ancestors.

“It’s 5,000 years of my ancestors’ work,” Florez says. “Five thousand years of continued cultivation and of keeping it isolated from other varieties to maintain the lineage.”

Centli Guamare, collected in Guanajuato, Mexico—the homeland of Florez’s greatgrandfather—was the first crop to enter the seed stewardship program Florez operates at his farm in North Lawrence. Since 2018, the approximately 1-acre site has grown and collected seeds from a half dozen other Indigenous Mexican crops.

These seeds include Centli Chapalote, one of the most culturally relevant maize varieties in Mexica history. (Mexica were the Indigenous Nahuatl-speaking people.) It produces glimmering brown, tan and yellow kernels that are popped for popcorn and ground into a sweet cornmeal for pinole. Centli Pozolero Rojo is a vibrant red corn traditionally used in Mexico to make hominy and pozole. Centli Michoacán is a corn with a kaleidoscope of colors, including white, yellow, redpink, blue and deep black cherry. Chícharo Verejón is a type of snow pea, and Hirsuta Tlalcacahuatl is a low-oil, high-sugar variety of snacking peanut.

Along with growing produce and collecting seeds, Florez, a farmer, ethnobotanist and educator, aims to pass down the cultural knowledge of farming so that this life-sustaining skill, like the seeds themselves, will not be lost to time. His work on the farm and as an educator is his way of bringing that knowledge home, not just for this generation, but for those that follow.

Reclaiming Agriculture Before returning to Kansas, Florez, a Topeka native, spent almost three years apprenticing under two farmers at Spiral Gardens, a community food security project in Berkeley, California. As California became more expensive, Florez saw an opportunity to bring everything he’d learned back to his home state. Through Common Ground, Lawrence’s urban agriculture program, he leases the acre for Maseualkualli Farms for $100 per year.

In addition to collecting seeds, Florez shares the skills needed to cultivate one’s own food. His work at Maseualkualli Farms, he explains, provides more than nutritional, homegrown vegetables—it offers a sense of personal agency through the shared, community-connected act of growing food.

“We need more people to get back into [growing their own food] collectively versus having many small farms that compete against each other,” Florez says. “One of the things that I’m envisioning is more people getting back into agriculture, not necessarily as a business, but as part of life.”

Toward that end, Florez has undertaken multiple projects. He created an apprenticeship program based on a beginner-farmer curriculum he developed for Douglas County, and the farm hosted its first apprentice in 2025. In 2019, Florez worked with two undergraduate researchers on a U.S. Department of Agriculture–funded study about ancestral Mexica farming. In November 2025, Florez gave a talk for the National Humanities Center about reclaiming agriculture as folklife. Since 2022, in a role literally connected to the next generation, Florez has shared agricultural knowledge with thousands of students each year as the Farm 2 School coordinator with the Lawrence school district.

Florez says that reclaiming agriculture for what it is—a part of our culture—is about increasing food security and, ultimately, food sovereignty. He points out, for example, that the percentage of people who are food insecure, or who lack consistent access to nutritious food, has remained relatively steady for 30 years, despite assistance from vital programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).

Without access to land and some degree of control over the food supply, Florez says communities will always be left vulnerable.

“If you don’t have some kind of say in how your food system works, you’re going to get whatever is being given to you,” Florez says. “And that’s oftentimes not enough.”

That applies not only to food but also to the ways land is farmed and its environmental impact.

Farming Practices The corporate, commoditized food system breeds corn and other produce for maximum yield and herbicide resistance. Cultivating ancestral seeds, however, can help restore environmental balance, Florez explains.

Taking another look at Centli Guamare, the speckled white-and-purple corn, serves as a prime example. Its aerial roots secrete a sugary polysaccharide that attracts beneficial bacteria. These bacteria consume the sugars and, in turn, convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that is bioavailable to the plant. This symbiotic relationship allows the corn to self-fertilize, reducing the need for environmentally destructive nitrogen fertilizers—a trait lost in most modern varieties.

“If we were to adopt these older varieties of corn that still have that symbiotic relationship in their DNA, then we would have a reduction of nitrogen use,” Florez says. “That’s a cost savings on the farm, a reduction in synthetics being used on the farm and a reduction in nitrogen runoff.”

Maseualkualli Farms employs many other environmentally conscious farming practices, including dry farming to conserve water and develop more climate-resilient seeds, no-till farming to preserve soil health, crop rotation and minimal fossil fuel use. In addition to ancestral corn, peas and peanuts, Florez grows rhubarb, salad radishes, sunchokes and several types of greens, which he sells to local restaurants.

BOOST YOUR CORN’S HEALTH Nixtamalization is an ancient Mesoamerican process of enhancing corn’s nutritional value, flavor and texture. “Nixtamalization makes corn more nutritious by freeing niacin for absorption, increasing calcium content … and improving corn protein digestibility,” says Pantaleon Florez III, the owner of Maseualkualli Farms. Here are the steps Florez takes to nixtamalize his corn. Pro tip: To get really scientific, weigh dry corn and use 1% of that weight in cal.

INGREDIENTS • • •

2 cups dry corn 8 cups water 1 tablespoon calcium hydroxide (known as “cal”) (Buy at a local drugstore or La Estrella Mexicana.)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Rinse dry corn under cold water, removing debris and cracked kernels.

2. In a large pot, combine corn, water and cal.

Stir and bring to a gentle boil, simmering for 20 to 30 minutes.

3. Turn off heat, put a lid on the pot, and let it sit at room temperature for 8 to 24 hours.

4. Drain corn in a colander and rinse thoroughly under cold water, rubbing kernels to remove the loosened skins. Some will remain and that’s OK. 5. At this point, grind it for masa or simmer it for an hour or more to eat as hominy.

For Florez, it all comes back to education. He hopes to pass down both knowledge of sustainable farming and ancestral seed care and the power of discernment. This will empower current and future generations to make their own agriculture decisions suited to their homes and an ever-changing environment.

“I don’t want to hand them what I know and say that’s the truth,” Florez says. “Because we’re handing off the earth to the next generation, right? It’s not ours. We have to think in that five-, six-generations-out framework.”

The name of Florez’s farm, Maseualkualli Farms, embodies these principles. It means “the people’s farms” in Nahuatl, the language of the Uto-Aztecan people.

Although instilling this ancestral knowledge in future generations may seem like a heavy task, Florez says that it has ultimately left him feeling lighter.

“I won’t ever get to meet [my ancestors] in this life, but in a way, I am,” Florez says. “I’m meeting them where they were, meeting them in a way where they still are.”

New venues and local producers are turning Lawrence into a serious stop for stand-up

Pure Chaos Breck Gordon has definitely come across Kaufman’s radar. After quickly becoming a regular at both of Kaufman’s clubs, Gordon started hosting open mic nights at Comedy Club of Lawrence.

Before that, she founded Pure Chaos, a comedy and production team.

In 2021, Gordon started Pure Chaos in New York. When she moved back to Lawrence in 2025, she started running it here as well. Getting Pure Chaos going in Lawrence has been pretty simple, she says, thanks to her longstanding connections Comedy Club with downtown businesses of Lawrence and bar managers.
