Introducing Rugalia’s bespoke rug designs

Located in the heart of Cape Town’s vibrant Waterfront, this top hotel is defined by its attention to detail and refined atmosphere. Rugalia was commissioned to manufacture large-scale bespoke rugs, a project that required both creative adaptability and technical precision. The concept called for statement rugs to anchor the spaces. However, as the design process evolved, so did the brief. Through ongoing collaboration and refinement with Kerry McCann (hospitality procurement) the decision was made to merge these ideas. The final designs feature expansive rugs, enriched with delicate detailing and striking accent colours. These designs play a dual role, acting not only as design features, but also creating the illusion of continuity and serving as a guide for the eye. The results are seamless integration of form and function, allowing the pieces to guide guests naturally through the spaces in the hotel, while maintaining a cohesive

aesthetic. The development phase involved extensive back-andforth to achieve the perfect balance of colour, scale and detail of the designs.

DETAILED DESIGN

One of the rugs in the Michelin star-rated restaurant features a deep blue, which was selected to complement the area’s rich interior palette, where layered tones, warm wood finishes and copper accents come together to create a sophisticated yet inviting environment. The floral elements were carefully incorporated to soften the boldness of the base colour, adding a sense of movement and refinement to the overall composition. Once this design was finalised, Rugalia’s senior production team took over. Four of the company’s most experienced artisans worked collaboratively to bring the rugs to life, tufting each section with precision and care. Time constraints added an additional layer of intensity to the process, as the extended design approval phase placed significant pressure on the production timeline. Despite this, the team maintained an unwavering commitment to quality, ensuring every detail met the company’s and client’s exacting standards.

All the bespoke rugs were tufted in medium cut-pile, chosen specifically for its luxurious underfoot feel. This technique not only enhances comfort, but also adds depth and texture, allowing the intricate design elements to stand out while maintaining durability in a high-traffic environment. The installation marked the culmination of many weeks of design and craftsmanship. The rugs now anchor the spaces while subtly guiding the flow of traffic. In this acclaimed venue, the interplay between the colours creates a sense of continuity throughout the various spaces of this prestigious establishment. The completed installation is both functional and visually striking, embodying the level of detail that defines underfoot opulence. Projects like this highlight the power of bespoke design (which Rugalia is widely recognised for) to transform spaces, demonstrating how thoughtful craftsmanship can elevate not only the visual environment, but also the overall guest experience.
