The working kitchen in today’s modern home is where the heavy lifting happens. “The working kitchen acts as the high-performance engine room. It separates heavy culinary prep, appliance noise and post-meal clutter from the main living zone. This allows the primary kitchen to remain an unblemished, social gallery space while the actual culinary choreography happens seamlessly out of sight,” explains Doga Zaifoglu, marketing manager at Linear Concepts.
INTUITIVE DESIGN
For the working kitchen to function at its best, proper planning of layout and design must be considered. “The working kitchen should be planned as an extension of the overall design language, with careful attention to flow, proportion and functionality,” says nuuma’s Craig Dexter. “Efficiency is essential, but the space should still reflect the same level of consideration and luxury found in the main kitchen,” he adds. Christél Ferreira, sales manager at Proreno Kitchens, elaborates on the layout of this space, mentioning
SCULLERY VS WORKING KITCHEN

“Traditionally, a scullery is a smaller space used primarily for washing dishes, laundry tasks and additional storage. It typically includes a sink, dishwasher and storage, but is not designed as a full food-preparation or cooking area. A working kitchen, on the other hand, is a fully functional extension of the main kitchen. In addition to storage and cleaning facilities, it often includes dedicated preparation space, additional appliances and in some cases a second hob or oven.”

She also notes that storage planning is particularly important, with consideration given to pantry requirements, appliance storage, cleaning supplies and waste management.

Material selection in this space is crucial, as the correct materials will ensure longevity and durability in the working kitchen. materials that are durable, easy to maintain, moisture-resistant and practical. For countertops, she suggests porcelain or granite. “Porcelain is highly resistant to heat, scratches and stains. It is easy to clean and suitable for busy households and avid cooks. Granite is also extremely durable and heat-resistant.” For cabinetry, Mbambo suggests moisture-resistant MDF with quality finishes. “Another material suited for this space is high-pressure laminate (HPL), which has excellent scratch- and impactresistance and is available in numerous finishes.”
Melanie Stein, managing member at EuroCasa Italia, mentions stainless steel as a material to consider. She says: “For demanding environments where hygiene is paramount, stainless steel
worktops are an outstanding choice, renowned for their durability, non-porous surface and ease of sanitation.”
ALL THE ESSENTIALS
While the working kitchen and everything included in this space will vary from home to home, a few elements are essential. “A sink, bin and dedicated preparation area form the foundation of any functional working kitchen,” explains Monique Da Costa-Kilian, national training manager at Easylife Kitchens. She adds that good storage is also important for pantry items, small appliances and everyday kitchen essentials. For homes with larger families, keen cooks or entertainers, she

Zaifoglu explains that when it comes to sinks, you should consider deep utility options, which are large undermounted sinks paired with professional pullout mixers to handle bulky cookware effortlessly. He also mentions intelligent task lighting. “Precision LED lighting flushmounted beneath cabinetry will ensure shadow-free workspaces.”
