As one of the statement areas in the home, attention to detail is imperative and kitchen designers and manufacturers are heeding the call to ensure the kitchen is a focal point.

DESIGNS AND STYLES If you are in the process of creating a designer kitchen, you can consider a few styles and designs. Here are some of the highlights that kitchen specialists are seeing.

“Understated yet sophisticated, today’s kitchen offers a refined design through the use of subtle texture contrasts and design elements combined with what we call ‘layering’ to ensure an experience of pared-back authentic luxury,” says Craig Dexter of nuuma.

Melanie Stein, managing member at EuroCasa Africa, points to modern and minimalist designs that allow the kitchen to flow seamlessly into the rest of the living area. “With this design style, the kitchen is an integral part of the home and family life. It is not just a working area, but it also fully integrates with everyday living.”

The kitchen island continues to evolve. According to Jenna Buys of twelve: “Due to open-plan modern living, the island will remain an anchor of the kitchen; not just a functional piece but, more than that, a design element that can really make the desired statement.”

Sculptural minimalism with rich, tactile warmth is also in.

“Think soft curves, fluted textures and integrated lighting that highlights natural materials, and consider extended seating areas that add to the social atmosphere of the kitchen,” mentions Kaylee Sterling, manager at Sterlings.

MATERIALS TO INSPIRE When it comes to kitchen materials, the market is expanding with designers looking to add a luxury tactile experience in this space.

“We have developed and continue to curate bespoke and exclusive

materials for the kitchen using stone, leathers, metals, timbers and glass,” highlights the design team at blu_line. And, as home owners are looking more towards having a personalised home, kitchen customisation is growing in demand. “Our X range allows for freedom of customisation through the use of the ultimate luxury materials,” the team adds.

Kayley Brazer, marketing manager at Casarredo, points to glass, wood and aluminium finishes. Cutting-edge materials elevate both aesthetics and functionality and Valcucine, for example, utilises sustainable materials like glass and aluminium, offering durability while taking the environment into consideration, she says.

There is a shift towards wellness-centred kitchens where space and light are optimised, Sterlings.

Marble, steel, melamine and lacquers are the materials used in the VVD Kitchen, designed by Vincent Van Duysen for Molteni&C, and illustrate how kitchen companies are placing emphasis on materials to ensure longevity, durability and aesthetic appeal.

Sustainable materials will become more and more popular as well, and Fazlin Oosthuizen, head designer at Blend Africa, notes the shift to eco-luxury. “Recycled stone, sintered surfaces like Dekton and brushed metallics bring both style and sustainability.”

FUNCTIONALITY AT ITS HEART Today’s kitchen is a space where functionality and aesthetics are in harmony and designers are creating spaces where both these elements work hand in hand. To ensure functionality remains a top priority, Doga Zaifoglu, architect’s associate at Linear Concepts, recommends bespoke storage and mentions custom storage solutions tailored to each client’s lifestyle. “These solutions incorporate innovations like motorised shelving, hidden pantries and integrated organisational systems,” he says. Kitchen designers are also creating kitchens that feature

an ergonomic layout where workflow efficiency and ease of movement are prioritised. Another imperative feature in kitchen design and functionality today is integrated technology that allows appliances to be incorporated seamlessly into the design, boosting functionality and aesthetic appeal.
