hile many consider the bedroom as a sanctuary, the bathroom of today is gaining momentum as the ideal retreat in the home. With the inclusion of smart technology, spa-like features and an emphasis on materials, bathrooms now offer a luxurious and indulgent experience designed to leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

“Modern bathroom styles are all about clean lines, neutral palettes and a sense of openness,” says Nico van der Merwe, CEO of DADO Creations. He adds that a strong demand for sleek minimalist layouts with floating vanities, frameless glass showers and freestanding bathtubs is in demand, fulfilling the need for a serene, airy and spacious environment.
Kaylee Sterling, manager at Sterlings Living, mentions that when it comes to designs and styles, there is an uptake in spa-inspired bathrooms that feel like a retreat. She also highlights the open-plan bathroom that “blends seamlessly with dressing areas, minimalist layouts with concealed storage and sculptural freestanding bathtubs” as being called for.

resistant, burned wood (Shou Sugi Ban) can be used as an accent for warmth and contrast and recycled glass countertops will be included for a sustainable yet luxurious finish.”
Kirsten Stigling, sales consultant and interior designer at LAVO Bathroom Concepts, mentions physical vapour deposition (PVD) finishes on tapware. “Our suppliers are starting to use PVD, which is one of the hardest ‘coatings’ you will find in tapware. It is very durable and rust-resistant,” she explains.
Van der Merwe says natural and tactile materials are having a big moment – “sustainability and texture are driving the use of unique finishes and we are incorporating reclaimed wood, recycled glass and bamboo into vanities and flooring,” he says, noting that these materials not only reduce environmental impact, but also add authenticity and depth. Sterling says there is a growing appreciation for fluted stone, matt travertine and brushed metal finishes as well. She adds that décor tiles in slab format are also very trendy. “We have been increasingly using slabs to tile bathroom walls as they provide a more uninterrupted finish to the space.”
FUNCTIONALITY REMAINS KEY
When you are designing and creating your bathroom, it is imperative to consider functionality. You want a space that not only looks great, but also functions impeccably. Russell says a good bathroom layout makes everyday use easy and comfortable. “It is all about making sure there is enough room to move around, that doors do not get in the way and everything – from the vanity to the toilet and shower – is spaced out just right.”

Stigling agrees and stresses using your space wisely by ensuring you don’t waste any space. “For small bathrooms, maximise your floor space by using wall-hung toilets and vanities. Visually, this will make your small space look bigger.” You should also consider multifunctional fixtures, such as wallmounted taps, thermostatic showers and even LED-lit mirrors, that enhance functionality while ensuring a pleasing aesthetic. According to van der Merwe, anti-fog and anti-bacterial surfaces are also gaining in popularity for both hygiene and convenience. He adds that at the same time, the demand for age-in-place design is growing as home owners seek spaces that evolve with their needs. Due to this and to further enhance functionality, he explains: “We are seeing increased use of non-slip flooring, grab bars and low-rim bars, walk-in showers with zero-threshold entries and raised toilet seats with built-in bidet functions. These features are designed to be both functional and elegant, proving that accessibility can be beautifully integrated.”
