From the Editor The magazine you have before you is a true demonstration of Good Deeds every second and every day. It’s a remarkable achievement if we say so ourselves, but it’s particularly a joy given the climate of the world today.

The inception of Good Deeds Magazine is to motivate, inspire and be a catalyst in your pathway of purpose. We are thrilled to have a publication to speak to your mind, body and soul. In this issue, we focus on well your well-being and wholeness. Yes, there is finally a publication that focuses on you.

Having a strong support system is a must in your purpose. With tenacity, hard work, and a positive attitude, we can do anything. We have taken the mantle to pave the road to opportunities and a real voice to shout from the mountain-top that Good Deeds occur every second of every day. Thank you for entrusting us with this task. Building Confidence & Self-Esteem One Child at a Time

I

have to admit, I’ve always known that my specifically designed path would lead me right to my purpose. Some people call me strong, but the truth is, that’s not always the case.

Being strong is over-rated.

Courage, on the other hand,

is paramount. I’ve always been courageous.

As far back as I can remember I’ve always felt comfortable talking to people; either one, or hundreds. My mother once told me that I was born

talking. Can you imagine that? Words have always attracted my attention…they create a visual picture in my mind and come to life in true color. Reading books is still my favorite pastime.

I have never been afraid to speak up, but I know what that fear looks like on the face of a child.

Imagine sitting in class avoiding the teacher’s attention so she won’t call on you. Keeping your head down, and even though you know the answers to her questions, you’re praying she doesn’t call your name.

But she does, and now you have to stand in front of the whole class to answer the question. Your throat is dry, your hands are sweaty, and you just want to run out of class and go home. Thoughts run through your head.

They will laugh at me, I will open my mouth and nothing will come out, I’m going to forget the answer.

Have you been there before?

so fearful that she literally got sick…and yes, the class laughed. It’s what kids do when they don’t really understand what just happened. I knew what happened, and I never forgot the look on her face as she ran out of the room.

Since then, this scene has played out more times than I care to count. As a child, when I saw the pain and fear of speaking publically on the faces of so many of my classmates, I felt helpless.

I didn’t know what to do.

However, as an adult, I soon discovered there was a lot I could do. It is through these discoveries that Every Child has as a Story was born.

Did you know that low communication skills put our children at risk?

At-risk students struggle with communicating their needs, ideas and feelings.

Low communication skills lead to diminished selfesteem and self-confidence.

These deficiencies are problematic areas for at-risk students. These children eventually shut down or 6

act out inappropriately.

By specifically addressing these areas of deficiency in at-risk students, Every Child has a Story has developed programs to move students age eight and up from being at-risk to being successful not only in school, but in life, as well.

Our after school programs are making a difference.

Three out of four parents agree that afterschool programs give them peace of mind about their children when they are at work.

Research shows that with consistent participation in high-quality, focused afterschool programs, students have better attendance and work habits, improved behavior, grades and test scores compared to their non-participating peers.

They also have an increased likelihood of moving on to the next grade level and graduating. Afterschool programs help reduce the achievement gap between students from lower income families and those from families with higher incomes.

This means increased and

enhanced self- esteem and self-confidence.

So, how do you build confidence and self-esteem in children?

We do it one child at a time. Every Child has a Story believes that a healthy self-esteem and rocket confidence is a child’s birthright. It’s a superpower every child needs to maneuver life’s peaks and valleys. Developing the ability to use words to convey a clear message to another is the first step towards activating that superpower.

Our premier program, Speech Crafters Speech and Debate Club, addresses the development of oral communication skills. The curriculum is structured by levels in which each child moves at their own pace.

They learn how to develop a speech and present it with confidence. The debate program allows kids to constructively argue points based on facts and not opinions. This process helps develop conflict resolution

skills where children learn that violence is not necessary to solve a conflict. They learn to think for themselves and speak clearly in an easily understood manner.

Spirituality and religion are thought to be one in the same by many people. People that believe they are the same tend to allow their beliefs and prejudices about religion prevent them from understanding the true meaning and value of being Spiritual. Although all religions acknowledge spirituality as being of faith, there are some definite differences. Religionis a set of specific beliefs and practices, shared by a community or group of people.

Spirituality- is an individual practice that relates to a sense of connection with something bigger than ourselves, while developing beliefs around the meaning of life. You can be “Spiritual� without being religious or participating in organized religion. Spirituality is about seeking a meaningful connection with something bigger than yourself, which can result in positive emotions, such as peace, contentment, gratitude, and acceptance.

Spirituality focus on having a sense of peace and purpose in life. It can be combined with yoga and meditation. Using these methods or a combination is beneficial in reducing stress, anxiety, and high blood pressure. Spirituality can be expressed in many ways; examples are faith and acts of kindness through forgiveness of others. Like your sense of purpose, your definition of spirituality may change throughout your life, as you adapt to your own experiences and relationships.

Nurturing and developing your spirituality may be just as important as eating healthy and exercising.

Taking time to reconnect with what you find meaningful in life can enhance your sense of connection with something more substantial than yourself.

Now let’s discuss why spirituality is necessary and some of the benefits. There is scientific evidence indicating spiritual practices are associated with better health and wellbeing.

Meditation- has been known to help regulated difficult emotions and relieve stress.

Research conducted by brain researchers’ shows meditation increases the brain’s density, which can reduce pain, and enhance the immune system.

Meditation has been proven helpful for people suffering from depression, anxiety, and chronic pain.

Journaling is another often overlooked, practice that can help you become more aware of your inner life.

Your “inner life” is your selftalk. What do you say or think about yourself? Are

your thoughts negative?

Journaling along with Mediation can quiet the inner voice so that you can feel more connected to your higher self. Studies show that writing during difficult times may help you find meaning in life’s challenges.

Yoga is an old spiritual practice that aims to create a sense of unity within the practitioner through physical postures and breathe expansion. Yoga has been found to reduce inflammation and stress,

decrease depression and increase feelings of wellbeing.

This list is just a brief description of the many practices that have been associated with spirituality.

Many spiritual traditions encourage participation in a community. Spiritual fellowship, such as attending a meditation group can be a source of support and may provide a sense of belonging, security, and community.

Lord, I know I am! Just think about it! After all the trials, tribulations, and tests, thanks be unto God that we don’t look like what we’ve been through. Shout hallelujah! Now if there is one thing that I can attest to, it is the fact that, I AM A SURVIVOR! I AM MORE THAN A CONQUEROR! I AM AN OVERCOMER! I can declare ALL of this NOT because of my righteousness (or shall I say UN-righteousness) BUT HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS! AND HIS GLORY! When I Peel back the pages of my past, I realize and recognize how GOD SNATCHED ME out of the enemy’s hand. Has God ever snatched you out of something that was meant to devour you? Oh yes, my brothers

and sisters, when Satan said YES! I got her/ him right where I want them, GOD STEPPED DOWN from eternity into time to reverse the curse of your circumstances! When Satan said YES, God said NOT SO! ISHOP T.D. JAKES is a leader, a visionary, provocative thinker, an entrepreneur, and author. He served as a senior pastor of The Potter’s House; a global humanitarian organization and 30,000-member church, located in Dallas, Texas. Bishop T.D. Jake’s mission is carried out through four distinct channels; global humanitarian outreach, inspirational conference, series media and entertainment ventures and self-leadership forums. On an interview with Good Deeds Media Network, he talked about his new book “SOAR” he said that It is different from other books, and he was a bit intimidated at a time, but he overcame his fears. He is very proud and glad to be called to ministry, and he also owns businesses; and produced films partnering with Sony Pictures and television, and is also into real estate.

He pointed out that the

problems of our community are not in regards to faith, but to work. People don’t have jobs, opportunities, and so do not reach their goals. He wrote Soar to unmask the other part of him to people and give them tips and tools on how they can enhance their skills, go into entrepreneurship and reach their dreams. He never had a book to be on The Times list for long, 13 weeks straight on New York Times bestsellers list. And he was amazed that people allowed him to speak to that part of their lives.

Advising on family matters, he stated that family is a difficult task and every family is different. You have to evaluate your family; do the pros and cons. In the family, if you have problems in one area, it bleeds over the other. You have to think about all that before you get in. On the other hand, if you can find a family member whose skill set matches with yours, and committed

to you, then there’s a trust among you that you cannot buy. Don’t allow people to push you into hiring them, because they are your cousins and need a job when they cannot do the job. And if you ever have a problem with them, you have to look ahead and see what that problem is going to be like. It is not how did you get in, but it is how will you get out of it.

One of the reasons he wrote the book SOAR is that many African American women and minority women, in particular, are going into business more readily than any other people. And the two reasons they are going out of business are due to lack of access to capital, and lack strategy for sustainable business. The book shares some tips and tools that would help people to have longevity in their business.

If you do not have a lot of money, you have to build according to scale. You might not be able to do it in

the opulent way that you wanted to do it or on the scale that you wanted to do it. You may have to do it as a hobby while you are working a fulltime job. Start with what you have and then put the profits back into the business and build the business until it gets up on its feet. Once you have a history, and you have marketability, you can then attract financers, but you cannot attract financers around an idea that you have no empirical data to justify. Most people who have money, want to look at what you have done first before they put their money behind your next step effort.

When he was asked about feeling,

fear, and emotion when starting a business, he said that everybody gets afraid when starting but that does not mean that you let fear drive the car. It may be a passenger, but it can’t have the wheel. Whether it’s fear or excitement over success, either one of them can be dangerous, if they get the wheel. You had a good month and all of a sudden, you go out there to enlist three more locations, slow down; this is not an emotion, this is a strategy. It is a rollout strategy that people who are strategic are far more successful than people who go 18

into business and are emotional.

So, whether that emotion is fear or exuberance, you don’t want either one to drive your next move. You want to measure your strategy, how far you expect to be in a year, how far you expect to be in five years. Was it the trend that you had in March of last year?

Just to see if it is just something you should expect for next March.

The more you can really do it mathematically and strategically, the more effective you are at doing it, he talks about that in the book. Bishop T.D. Jakes said

I don’t want to start it in a book and then get people out there and just leave them hanging. I want to continue to mentor and develop, so that this coming generation can really get rooted and grounded into the possibilities of what we want the future to look like.

Speaking on team building, he said that he is a great team builder. His leadership style is team-building.

He has done everything because of team building.

His team has done over 500 million dollars grossing at the box office in film and television and has done it with the staff of 12. So, you know, 12 people couldn’t have done it if they did not develop teams outside. They have partnerships outside and keep their overhead and payroll down. They do their business through partnerships because when you are doing a film, you need people when you are not doing a film you don’t need people. Regardless of what kind of business at your end, you are not greater than the team you have around you. In Black Panther, one of the great lines is when the father died, and he told the oncoming Prince who was about to be the king, he says, “you are a good man, and it is hard for a good man to be King” and on the next line he said, “surround

yourself with great people”.

Bishop T.D. Jakes advised that you should surround yourself with great people, not friends, not people you like, nor people you want to hang with, but people who soar on the level and think on the level of your dreams.

According to him, all leaders have blindsides.

And none is good at everything. This is what you should do as leaders, hire your weaknesses, that is, surrounding yourself with people who are good at what you are not good at. He said “I am not trying to make you become something that you are not, nor good at something that you are not good at, but I am saying it just because you are not good at it, doesn’t mean that you crippled your vision, generalize the growth of your organization because of your deficiency”. He also said that what he brought to the ministry was who he is; his father, grandmother, and grandfather were entrepreneurs and so,

he brought that part of himself along with him. He didn’t turn his church into a business; he has his own business, a none for-profit business, which has helped his church in the area of negotiating for; low-income housing, to relocate through 12 schools, to send rice into Kenya, or the hospitals they adopted in Nairobi. That ability to have a business acumen is a huge asset, whether you are for profit or not for profit organizations, he said.

In regard to being a natural and a spiritual father, he said I raised my children, and they are all grown and wonderful. They are humans, they are flawed, but I’m proud of them in that they have overcome their obstacles and have become productive. I learnt that it is not what you give to your children that makes them great, it is what you put in them. Secondly, no matter what you say to children, they are going to become what you model in front of them, whether you are an abusive or good husband, they will ultimately be synced by your own behavior. It is very important that fathers understand that their presence is very important, it is obvious that your sons need a model, but also for your daughters, because the first taste of masculinity most women have come from their fathers. if he was absent, abusive, or abandoned them, then it sets a precedence of their expectation and their attraction, and they keep trying to resolve the problem with their dad, all their boyfriends and so forth. Men, let’s take our rightful place, lead our families, do the job and do it well, it will come back and bless us a thousand times over.”

When he was asked how he would advise his younger self, he replied by saying that he would tell himself not to spend so many nights worried about things that were not worthy of his worry. And he would also tell himself to enjoy and trust the process and not to fear while he was building, growing, and developing, because he had never done it before; he is scared every day. If he had dismissed more anxiety that would be one thing. The second thing that he would tell himself is to shoot higher, sometimes he was cautious to a fault, and it doesn’t look like he was cautious, it looks like he was radical but could have done more or gone further if he had not allowed his caution to intimidate his vision.

He said “In retrospect, I realized that it’s up to us, how far and deep we go, and a lot of it is hindered because of our own inhibitions and insecurities. I was 22 when I started pastoring, at 30, I was on national television, and 38 when I came to Dallas. I was very young, and that feeling may be why I love young people, I know how tough it is to be trying to build your dream and then wrestle with your fears”.

t’s spring, and everyone is gearing up to receive it.

The fresh air, the beautiful flowers, the rain and all the beautiful things that the coming months have to offer, but there is something else that the spring months usher in that is not very pleasant – ALLERGENS.

e all love the cold weather, perhaps because we know how to handle it. Yeah, wear more clothes, cover up more, and drink more soups and teas, and stay indoors as much as possible. Well, this is not plausible with the warm/hot weather.

the warm/hot season after a long hibernation season of winter but how do we handle the warm temperatures and stay healthy too?
