joy. Sundance
and art,
We believe in the natural world and this land. There is no greater balm for our humanity nor any equal for the beauty nature displays and inspires. Sundance provides abundant proof. We believe in the creative spirit. This is humanity’s greatest attribute and our way forward. It needs to be nurtured and inspired— Sundance affords both the physical and mental space for this work. We believe in coming together. Community gives us something greater than ourselves— connection, power, gathers people for recreation united by nature and its call. Welcome.

The Land
All nature is doing her best each moment to make us well— she exists for no other end. Do not resist her.

We acknowledge that this land is the ancestral home of the Noohchew Ute People and the other tribes of Utah, the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute and Navajo. We recognize and respect the enduring relationship that exists between many Indigenous peoples and their traditional homelands. We appreciate their stewardship and aspire to preserve and conserve the land we now know as Sundance Mountain Resort.Sundance Mountain Resort is located at the base of 12,000-foot Mount Timpanogos, in Provo Canyon, Utah. The 2,600 acre resort includes 1,862 acres of land preserved through a conservation easement and restrictive covenants, including the 316 acre Redford Family Elk Meadows Preserve. Nature benefits our heart and mind, our body and spirit. At Sundance Mountain Resort, well-being and creativity are tied to the land. Every experience here is rooted in sustaining the whole person. The North Fork creek flows throughout the resort to the North Fork of the Provo River. Stewart Falls is nestled within the protected wilderness. Snowmelt and precipitation sustain the land. Water is life. Here is physical and mental open space—— to explore, discover, relax, create, and find [or lose] yourself. Somewhere awaits an experience which belongs to you and we are committed to helping you find it.

Mount Timpanogos—the second highest peak of the Wasatch Range—rises to an elevation of 11,752 feet (3,582 meters) above sea level.
Today Sundance Mountain Resort
Provo Canyon runs between Mount Timpanogos on the north and Mount Cascade on the south. Through forces of erosion, the Provo River has carved out the canyon over time. Up to the 1900s The Ute People The Noohchew Ute People called the mountains throughout Utah and Colorado home. Their lands were rich with fish and game. The Toompahnahwach (Mouth of the Headwaters) Ute Band resided in the Wasatch Mountains. The Utes had great fisheries in what is called Utah Lake today. Most Noohchew spent the summer on the mountain tops and the winter in the lower lands. Provo Canyon, Provo River, and Mount Timpanogos would have been both beautiful and fruitful homes.
“Timp” is comprised of rocks formed 300 million years ago when most of central North America was submerged under a shallow sea.
The Mountain and Canyon Sundance Mountain Resort is located within the Wasatch Mountain Range, seated in a valley between Mount Timpanogos to the west and the North Fork Ridge in the north east.
1899–1969 The STEWART FAMILY The Stewarts, a family of Scottish immigrants, homesteaded about 2,200 acres at the turn of the 20th century. In 1944, the second generation of Stewarts developed the mountain into a small ski resort called Timp Haven. 1969–2020 The REDFORD FAMILY
As our story continues, we evolve with a renewed appreciation of the land and our ongoing commitment to unspoiled and authentic experiences where art, nature, and community unite to inspire people, voices, and ideas.
The Sundance story
In 1969, Robert Redford began to acquire the land now known as Sundance Mountain Resort and envisioned the careful growth of a community that balanced art, nature, and recreation. Redford wanted “to develop a little and preserve a great deal.” Sundance Mountain Resort is rooted in environmental conservation and artistic experimentation.

RopeMorning:drop on the Outlaw Express and Red’s all the way up for first tracks down Bearclaw. Great start to a full day of skiing. Mom kept up with the kids, but I’m always catching up on my snowboard. Major refuel at Bearclaw Cabin—— nachos with family at the top of the resort with 360° views—— what a moment, Martin Family top ten. Back to our favorite runs for the afternoon—— Bearclaw, Wild Flower, Bishop’s Bowl, Maverick, and for me, Stampede. Can’t wait to come back tomorrow, although Mom is thinking she might want to check out an art studio class.
PizzaDinner:delivered to our room for the kids so Mom and I could have a date night at The Tree Room! I could eat the Pepper Steak every night. But it was the Native American Art from Robert Redford’s exceptional collection that inspired——the woven wall hanging was incredible.
Late Aprésafternoon:skiatthe Owl Bar. Once more, spectacular views, and the drinks even better——hot chocolate and cold beer [not together].
WeEvening:wentback to grab the kids for our full moon snowshoe adventure at the Nordic Center. I know, the never ending amazing day. A totally different experience exploring the wooded trails by the light of the moon——we even saw elk, fantastic.
EarlyBreakfast:rise and full breakfast at The Foundry Grill——we shared the buttermilk pancakes, as well as a scramble and a hash for the protein.

WeMorning:tookthe Outlaw Express to Mandan Summit——whoever said “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey” got it right. But Mountaintop Yoga was more than worthy of the trip up—— incredible workout with inspiring views of Mount Timpanogos and the surrounding valley. We left the mountain both centered and pumped. Ready for more.
Late morning/Early afternoon: Off the mountain, we made our way to the horse stables for a guided ride on the Stewart Falls trail. Our trek to the falls included unparalleled views of the Wasatch Mountains and Mount Timpanogos, not to mention the wildflowers blooming. I’m an avid hiker, but being on horseback got my eyes off the trail ahead of me and on the world all around me. After our ride, we grabbed burgers and tacos from the food truck and ate out under the shade at the picnic tables.
Late afternoon: From a horseback ride to a thrill ride on the Sundance ZipTour. After a training session, we headed back up the Outlaw Express for the Maverick Tour. We soared above the trees for almost a mile but it went by fast! I’m hooked. Next time, I’ll come back for the full Bearclaw Tour and the Full Moon

WeLunch/Afternoon:grabbedsandwiches, drinks, and sweet treats from The Deli and headed off for some birding. Even before getting out on the trail, I spotted some American Dippers [good barometers of healthy waters!] near the pond. Sightings on our hike included Chickadees and Steller’s Jays, a White-breasted Nuthatch, and Hummingbirds. Ray swears he saw a Western Tanager, but I have my doubts——more of a summer bird. Late afternoon: It was hard to decide between a massage at the Spa, or a class at the Art Studio. Glad I went with throwing a pot——incredibly relaxing and rewarding to create something to take home. Ray went to the Fly-fishing Shop, where he got to try his hand at fly-tying!

WeDinner/Evening:passedbythe Rehearsal Hall on our way to dinner and saw a wedding inside and on the deck overlooking the pond. What a beautiful venue! It added to the romance of our own evening at the Tree Room, cozy by the fireplace with delicious food and wine. After dinner, we went to the Owl Bar for a cocktail and live music. To complete our day, we saw a Great Horned Owl on the walk back to our room.
John Burroughs
NowMorning:that we’re retired, Ray’s dream is to become a professional fly fisherman, so we drove 5 minutes down the road to the Provo River for a morning of guided fly fishing. Our guide was knowledgeable and personable, skilled and patient. The waters were easy to wade and between us, we caught three large Brown trout and one Rainbow trout. The views were breathtaking, as expected. But I was surprised by how I responded to the flow of the river and the rhythm of casting. Maybe it’ll be more than just a tag-along activity for me.

Global Climate, Local Solutions Provo Canyon
The most pressing issues of global climate change are of great concern here at Sundance Mountain Resort—air and water quality, deforestation and biodiversity, drought and wildfires. Like much of the American West, wildfires impact the land we hike and the air we breathe. For alpine communities like Sundance Mountain Resort, drought, shrinking snowpacks, and warmer winters are existential challenges, not just recreational or economic concerns. By protecting our winters here in Provo Canyon, we’re addressing global climate impacts on lives and livelihoods. By conserving and preserving the lands within and beyond our resort, we’re securing a future for our community of guests and residents to find beauty, inspiration, and adventure in the great outdoors. By investing in our environment and facilitating stewardship, we’re protecting the myriad species and natural features that make Provo Canyon our home. Water conservation and quality throughout the resort is paramount to operations. Our drinking water comes from local mountain-fed springs—— pure, refreshing, and safe. No plastic water bottles here!
The resort is powered entirely by renewable solar energy generated in Utah. The sun powers our chairlifts, lodging rooms, restaurants, and other buildings!
