Welcome.
We believe in the natural world and this land. There is no greater balm for our humanity nor any equal for the beauty nature displays and inspires. Sundance provides abundant proof.
We believe in the creative spirit. This is humanity’s greatest attribute and our way forward. It needs to be nurtured and inspired— Sundance affords both the physical and mental space for this work.
We believe in coming together. Community gives us something greater than ourselves— connection, power, joy. Sundance gathers people for recreation and art, united by nature and its call.

The Land
Sundance Mountain Resort is located at the base of 12,000-foot Mount Timpanogos, in Provo Canyon, Utah. The 2,600 acre resort includes 1,862 acres of land preserved through a conservation easement and restrictive covenants, including the 316 acre Redford Family Elk Meadows Preserve.
Nature benefits our heart and mind, our body and spirit. At Sundance Mountain Resort, well-being and creativity are tied to the land.
Every experience here is rooted in sustaining the whole person.
Here is physical and mental open space—— to explore, discover, relax, create, and find [or lose] yourself. Somewhere awaits an experience which belongs to you and we are committed to helping you find it.
The North Fork creek flows throughout the resort to the North Fork of the Provo River. Stewart Falls is nestled within the protected wilderness. Snowmelt and precipitation sustain the land. Water is life.
We acknowledge that this land is the ancestral home of the Noohchew Ute People and the other tribes of Utah, the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute and Navajo. We recognize and respect the enduring relationship that exists between many Indigenous peoples and their traditional homelands.
We appreciate their stewardship and aspire to preserve and conserve the land we now know as Sundance Mountain Resort.
All nature is doing her best each moment to make us well— she exists for no other end. Do not resist her.
Henry David Thoreau
The Sundance story
300 Million Years Ago
The Mountain and Canyon
Sundance Mountain Resort is located within the Wasatch Mountain Range, seated in a valley between Mount Timpanogos to the west and the North Fork Ridge in the north east.
Mount Timpanogos—the second highest peak of the Wasatch Range—rises to an elevation of 11,752 feet (3,582 meters) above sea level.
“Timp” is comprised of rocks formed 300 million years ago when most of central North America was submerged under a shallow sea.
Provo Canyon runs between Mount Timpanogos on the north and Mount Cascade on the south. Through forces of erosion, the Provo River has carved out the canyon over time.
Up to the 1900s
The Ute People
The Noohchew Ute People called the mountains throughout Utah and Colorado home. Their lands were rich with fish and game. The Toompahnahwach (Mouth of the Headwaters) Ute Band resided in the Wasatch Mountains.
The Utes had great fisheries in what is called Utah Lake today. Most Noohchew spent the summer on the mountain tops and the winter in the lower lands.
Provo Canyon, Provo River, and Mount Timpanogos would have been both beautiful and fruitful homes.
1899–1969
The STEWART FAMILY
The Stewarts, a family of Scottish immigrants, homesteaded about 2,200 acres at the turn of the 20th century. In 1944, the second generation of Stewarts developed the mountain into a small ski resort called Timp Haven.
1969–2020
The REDFORD FAMILY
In 1969, Robert Redford began to acquire the land now known as Sundance Mountain Resort and envisioned the careful growth of a community that balanced art, nature, and recreation. Redford wanted “to develop a little and preserve a great deal.” Sundance Mountain Resort is rooted in environmental conservation and artistic experimentation.
Today Sundance Mountain Resort
As our story continues, we evolve with a renewed appreciation of the land. The resort honors our ongoing commitment to unspoiled and authentic experiences where art, nature, and community unite to inspire people, voices, and ideas.

Dominating the skyline to the west, Mount Timpanogos presents a magnificent example of a glacier-sculpted bowl formation. The Cirque showcases grey-to-tan sandstone layers interbedded with black-to-grey limestone layers.
In addition to the omnipresent cobble along the river, geologic specimens and formations abound throughout Provo Canyon, including black and brown shale you’ll see throughout the resort.

The Rocky Mountain Montane Forest is characterized by coniferous trees such as pines, firs, and spruce, and deciduous trees such as aspen, oak, and maple. This forest occupies an elevation range of approximately 5,500–10,000 ft.
The most important environmental factor that controls or that impacts plant community composition in the Rocky Mountains is elevation—— predicts that certain plant communities remain somewhat constant over long distances.

The Power of Art and Nature
Stewardship
We recycle cardboard, paper, glass, aluminum, and plastic on-site.
In a perfect fusion of our artistic and environmental purposes, artists in our Glassblower Studio transform recycled glass into art pieces, vases, wine glasses, dinner plates and pitchers—— used and sold throughout the resort.
We set aside 1% of all resort revenue for the environment, education, and the arts in the immediate areas and communities around Sundance Mountain Resort. The funds go to non-profits like the Sundance Nature Alliance and other organizations addressing environmental issues and promoting stewardship in Provo Canyon.
The most pressing issues of global climate change are pressing concerns here in Provo Canyon on the south east slope of Mount Timpanogos—extreme weather, air and water quality, deforestation and biodiversity. Like much of the American West, wildfires impact the air we breathe and the land on which we live, work, and play. For alpine communities like Sundance Mountain Resort, drought, shrinking snowpacks, and warmer winters are existential challenges, not just recreational or economic concerns.
Sundance Nature Alliance
Sundance Nature Alliance is an environmental nonprofit organization committed to protecting the land by igniting curiosity and inspiring residents and visitors to love, learn, and act to protect our natural world. By preserving, conserving, and restoring the water, land, and biodiversity within and beyond the resort, Sundance Nature Alliance is securing a future for our community of residents and visitors to find beauty, inspiration, and adventure in the great outdoors.
Over half of the 5000 acres of land within the Sundance Community is protected from development. Throughout the land, we insure the health of our watershed through advocacy for the Provo River and support biodiversity by restoring ecosystems, establishing protected areas, and arresting habitat destruction.
programming
Through our stewardship and programming, we bring people together with the land. Join us for one of our programs and see how you can be a part of a community united by love for this land, invested in our environment, and inspired to act on behalf of our planet. Appreciate the land through Voices of Nature—our guest artist series.
Connect to the land through Art in Nature—our art workshops.
