Financial institutions across Florida are being staked out by fraudsters looking for innocent people to trick into criminal activity. If you are ever at an ATM or ITM and a stranger approaches, DO NOT ENGAGE.
Scammers come up to people using ATMs or ITMs asking them to deposit a check for them. They will try to pull your heartstrings with a story about why they can’t deposit it and why they need the funds urgently. They will even offer to let you keep some of the money if you make the deposit. However, these checks are fraudulent and this is an attempt to steal money.
Never accept money or checks from strangers! Suncoast and other financial institutions are working with law enforcement to apprehend these fraudsters. But the best way to avoid being scammed is to not engage with anyone who approaches you at an ATM or ITM.
