PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The term compliance encompasses a wide variety of regulations and issues, especially in an HOA. It applies not only to homeowners, but to the Association’s Board and Managers. When we think of compliance, thoughts that come to mind are landscaping, exterior painting, and nuisance issues. But that is only a part of it. For HOA’s, Nevada is one of the most regulated states in the country. Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 116 outlines all the do’s and don’ts for association governance. And it is 170 pages of small type!

HOAs sometimes suffer from a negative reputation that may not be deserved.

Although many of us love living in our community, there remain those that do not.

Those that are unhappy may not be aware of what is truly involved in, or be required to, successfully operate an association.

There are specific things in NRS 116 that govern how our HOA must operate.

These include the Board’s fiduciary duties, the CC&Rs, bylaws, document handling, and much more. The Board has an obligation and duty to maintain common area elements, protect property values, maintain health and safety standards, and always act in the best interest of the community.

Homeowners need to do their part when it comes to compliance and safety within the community. They have a stake in sustaining the community. Not only should they maintain their own property, but they are the eyes and ears of the community. The Board and staff cannot be everywhere to see everything going on, especially in a community of 7881 homes. As a homeowner, if you see something that may need attention, you should make the Executive Director or the Board aware of the issue. We have an “Eyes of Summerlin” hotline text number (702-449-4025) for reporting issues. Then appropriate investigation and/or action can be taken. So, if you see something – say something!

Our staff plays an important part in the operation of Sun City Summerlin. In addition to day-to-day operations, they provide the Board with the needed guidance, recommendations, and assistance with industry professionals to help the Board make decisions in the best interest of the HOA. They stay up to date with changes in the state statutes as well as local regulations and ordinances.

Compliance and safety in Sun City Summerlin should be on everyone’s mind. When everyone does their part and plays by the rules, it makes for a well-maintained, safe, and enjoyable community - rather than just a group of homes.

Ribbon Cutting for the Library, Gratitude Garden & Tennis Courts Wednesday, October 4, 2023, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Come join Executive Director, Mitzi Mills, SCSCAI Board Members, the Library and Tennis Club and staff for the ribbon-cutting ceremonies to celebrate the new library location and bookcase display at Mountain Shadows, the Gratitude Garden commemoration, and the opening of the remodeled Tennis Courts. The library ribbon cutting ceremony will start the event, immediately followed by the ribbon cutting to commemorate the Gratitude Garden. Look for your special brick in the Gratitude Garden or find out how to purchase one for yourself or a loved one. The Gratitude Garden brick order sheets are located at all Social Monitor stations, or you can go online at https://4everbricks.com/donors/scscai/. Next, a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the opening of the remodeled Mountain Shadows Tennis Courts with the Tennis Club. Community Garage Sale Coming in October

F P AARP Income Tax Program Needs Your Help AARP sponsors an important program in Sun City Summerlin to prepare income tax returns for residents. Each return is prepared by a trained counselor and reviewed by an experienced volunteer to assure a high standard of quality service. This program e-filed over 675 returns last year. We need your help.

Volunteers should have some knowledge of income tax rules and some computer skills. You will be required to attend a oneweek tax course and pass an open book proficiency exam. You will need to contribute at least four hours weekly during the tax season. Mountain Shadows will be open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from the beginning of February until April 15th.

What Does Autumn Mean Here we go! The autumnal equinox takes place in the Northern Hemisphere on Saturday, September 23rd – the first day of fall and what’s not to love? The grandchildren are back in school; football games begin; pumpkin spice is added to just about anything; gardens are being put to bed, and we all start to gear up for the Holidays.

But each season of life elicits certain feelings about how we perceive a season.

Being a season that contains both abundance and solemnity, autumn is a highly symbolic season as presented in a number of myths, legends, and festivities over the years.

According to Greek mythology, Persephone, daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, returns to the underworld during the September equinox every year. During the time that Persephone is in the underworld, Demeter is so sad that she deprives the earth of crops until spring when her daughter returns to her.

The Romans honored the harvest festival in a celebration known as Cerelia. This festival dedicated to Ceres the goddess of corn was marked with offerings of pigs and first fruits of harvest, music, parades, games, sports, and a thanksgiving feast. This Roman festival follows a story similar to the Greek origin of seasons, with Persephone being known as Cerelia, Demeter as Ceres, and Hades as Pluto.

The Chinese and Vietnamese associate the full moon of the equinox with a good harvest. This association began during the Shang Dynasty, a time when they harvested rice and wheat in plenty to the extent that they began making offerings to the moon in a festival they term as Harvest Moon Festival. and releasing of lanterns in the streets, and the consumption of round pastries known as moon cakes.

The Buddhists of Japan return to their ancestral homes every spring and fall to celebrate their ancestors in a festival called “Higan.” Higan means “From the other Shore of Sanzu River.”

Crossing this mystical Buddhist river is believed to represent crossing into the afterlife.

The British held and still hold harvest festivals on the Sunday nearest to the harvest moon in fall. This festival was later taken to America by the earliest English settlers and was adopted as the Thanksgiving holiday celebrated in November.

During the French Revolution of the 1700s, the French, in a bid to rid themselves of religious and royalist calendar influence, initiated a calendar that paid respect to the seasons of the year.

This calendar which started at the midnight of the autumnal equinox and had each month named after a naturally occurring element would later be abolished by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806.

The Jews celebrate Sukkot, the harvest festival, in two celebrations namely Chag ha Sukkot which means “Feast of the Tabernacle” and Hag Ha-Asif which means “Feast of Gathering.”

The Welsh celebrated the autumnal equinox in a feast called Mabon. Mabon according to Welsh mythology, was the son of the goddess earth mother. To this day, there are still factions who celebrate Mabon.

As Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, "The only constant is change." We are reminded that our bodies, minds and surroundings are constantly developing, and that life, too, moves forward.

CELEBRATING

By Gail Abrams / Link Labor Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the holiday into law designating a day of rest for workers nationwide.

Two labor union leaders are credited with proposing the holiday: Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor and Matthew Maguire, the secretary of the Center Labor Union of New York.

New York State first introduced a bill recognizing the achievements of workers, followed by Oregon. In 1887, four additional states, including: Colorado, Massachusetts, New

Jersey, and New York signed a worker holiday into law. In the late 1880s, three more states jumped on the bandwagon.

By 1894, a total of 23 states agreed to adopt the holiday.

September 5, 1882, marked the first Labor Day parade held in New York City. To this day, parades are an annual tradition, followed by barbecues, picnics and fireworks.

Many of us find ourselves working on Labor Day. Why? It is the American spirit that drives us to achieve and maintain a good standard of living for our family.

This Labor Day 2023 let’s pay tribute to the American worker. Celebrate the American work ethic and our way of life!

Honoring Residents Corner: Chris & Dave Klee by Gail Abrams / Link

hris and her husband Dave grew up on the south side of Chicago. They met in Chris’ senior year in high school.

Dave was two years ahead of Chris and they attended different high schools. They met in October of 1960, Chris graduated in June 1961 and, they married in November 1961. It will be 62 years married in November!

Dave was an apprentice printer when they met working for the Chicago Tribune (he worked there for seven years). Then, he went to work for the Hammond Times (in Hammond, Indiana for seven years). In January 1967, Chicago got 29 inches of snow in 24 hours. When they could find the ground in the front lawn, the For Sale sign was put up, they sold their home and moved to San Diego, CA., where they lived for 37 years.

Before moving to San Diego, Chris was a stay-at-home mom, raising their 3 kids (two girls and one boy). In Chicago, Dave worked for Arts & Crafts Press (the company published phone books) and Chris was a school secretary until they started their own print shop. In the beginning, they ran their print shop out of their garage and later as their business grew, moved into a storefront for the next 27 years. With the arrival of Kinko’s, their business dropped off and Dave went to work for the School District and Chris went to work for the City of Poway, starting in the recreation department and working her way up to Executive Assistant for the Director of Redevelopment.

Dave and Chris moved to Sun City Summerlin in 2004 and knew just two people: Chris’ mom and her neighbor! They moved here to take care of Chris’ mom after her dad died suddenly. Chris’ mom lived for eight more years, and they shared some wonderful years. “We are happy that my mom and dad bought here,” says Chris.

Chris shared an article from the June 2017 LINK Magazine (page 33) regarding the Golf Ambassador Committee. Eight couples were involved. The concept was customer service driven: To provide a friendly “welcome” to prospective residents interested in moving into our retirement community that offers golf amenities. A resident couple would meet with prospects on a

Saturday morning, pay for their golf, take them to lunch, and then show them around the community. Chris and Dave felt “accomplished” if someone then decided to buy a house in the community. It made prospects feel at home, that this is a very welcoming community!

Chris’ interests are golf and spreading a positive message for the sport. Chris serves on the Golf Oversight Committee.

Chris has served on the Women’s Golf Board for 16 years and is currently Handicap Co-Chair for Women’s Golf. Both Chris and Dave are Tournament Chairpersons for the Guys and Gals Golf Club. There are 188 members. Normally, Dave and Chris play one Sunday a month and average 100 players. It is a friendly, social event.

Dave played some golf before moving here. Chris learned to play here. Chris recounts why she started playing golf: “During a trip to Whistler, Canada, Dave and I traveled with another couple. The two husbands played golf as did the wife. However, she sat out because I did not play golf. I felt bad because she did not get to play on my account. She told me: “You need to

learn to play golf.” Once home, Chris called Fred Gallegos, the golf pro at Eagle Crest; it was March. Chris arrived for her first class. The wind was blowing at gale force speed (at about 40 miles an hour). She asked the golf pro if they should cancel and reschedule. Fred Gallegos said: “Why?” He said: “If you are going to worry about the wind, don’t bother learning how to play golf in Vegas!” “I learned how to play the game and love it,” says Chris.

Dave and Chris golf 2 or 3 days a week, play pool, and cards with friends. “We are so happy here. We pinch ourselves every day,” says Chris.

Dave says: “Here in our community, we have residents from all over the country. I don’t know if it is golf that is the ‘glue’ that joins us all together. This is a very tight-knit community because of the golf.”

We Can Spread Positivity

Spreading positivity is the one of the simplest and most powerful gifts we can share with others – and its benefits are exponential! One of the most important ways we can increase our well-being and positivity is by recognizing what is within our control (and changing it if it doesn’t make us happy), and accepting the things that are not.

Here is a great quote by Elvis Presley (NOT “Don’t step on my blue suede shoes”): “When things go wrong, don’t go with them.”

Sometimes a reminder of our ability to be positive and to spread it to others can go a long way. Here are some ideas I have collected along the way.

1. Smile. So simple, but so effective. Offering a smile makes you appear approachable, and is often infectious. Imagine being responsible for making tens of hundreds of people smile, simply by starting the chain!

2. Pay Someone a Compliment. How often do we not compliment someone when we see something we love or admire? Just think how great you feel on the odd occasion somebody approaches you simply to pay you a compliment?! A compliment can light up someone’s day… and yours.

3. Give the Benefit of the Doubt. Giving people the benefit of the doubt makes them feel better. Bonus: it will make us feel better too – on multiple levels. You’ll feel benevolent AND gain their warmth and gratitude. Nine times out of ten, people do not set out to hurt us. You might call it wrong very occasionally, but wouldn’t you prefer to feel happier 90% of the time, over being right 10% of the time?

4. Forgive. Remember, forgiveness is not to exonerate them – it’s to allow us inner peace. THIS IS THE BIGGIE… it may be difficult but can have huge rewards.

5. Don’t Complain. It is easy to complain… and then for it to become a habit. But we can make an effort not to focus on the things that cause us to complain. People who moan all the time are draining to be around and thus are often short of people who want to spend time in their company. In contrary, simply by being positive you spread positivity – and people will love you for it.

6. Be a Good Listener. Offering a good ear is a really valuable asset that you’ve probably noticed is quite special 4 2 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

7. Practice Gratitude. When you practice gratitude, everything else falls into place and being positive becomes easy. Gratitude helps you to reframe things so that life feels good, and when you are content, being positive is simply an extension of that.

8. Always Look for the Silver Lining. This is slightly different to being grateful. It’s easy to be grateful for obviously wonderful things – it’s not difficult for us to be grateful for our family and our home, for example. Finding the silver lining in challenging or unhappy circumstances is much harder, but still important. The silver lining can lead to gratitude and stops us from becoming consumed with negative feelings.

9. Altruism. One of the very best ways to spread positivity is simply by being kind and generous with our time, if we’re able.

One of the biggest benefits of this, perhaps surprisingly, is actually for the benefactor. The quickest, most effective route to happiness and fulfilment is through altruism. (Which begs the question, is anything, ever truly altruistic?)

Another great quote… by Booker T. Washington: “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.”

Amazing Aging: A Fresh Start

By Skye Baloo, Resident Happy September Everybody! For us here in the desert, fall heralds new beginnings! Some of you will have been travelling to visit family, friends, grass, mosquitos, oceans, lakes and forests.

Others will have remained here, opening car doors with oven gloves and baking mac ’n’ cheese in your mailbox.

As we move into September, we remember why we call Sun City Summerlin home again. While winter grips the rest of the country, we get to embrace life anew.

Towards the end of this year, the ‘Amazing Aging’ class will begin. In readiness, it’s time to reflect on your summer, and look forward to amazing times ahead.

Let’s begin with reflection; how WAS summer for you? How were family and friend gatherings? What was wonderful and what did you want to run a million miles from? If you stayed here in Vegas throughout the summer, locked in a tumultuous relationship with your air conditioning, how was it for you?

Are you a child of the sun, or was it tough hibernating from the heat? What connections do you need to foster as the seasons unfold?

The wonderful thing about aging is you get to be clear on what you want, what you need, and to embrace it as best you’re able. CLARITY is the key to the happiest of times in these wonderful seasons ahead!

Grab a pen and paper and scribble down 3 things you’d like to move towards this fall, and 3 things that you’re happy to put distance between. Then strategize how you can begin to make each of those things happen. Finally, never leave the scene of a plan without scheduling a TIME and a DAY to begin the wonderful things. Whether it’s spending more time on the phone with family back home, or embracing neighborhood walks as the temperatures drop. Plan a time, a day, and be specific! Oh, and don’t forget to check your mailbox, you never know what might be cooking in there!

“You Oughta Be in Pictures...”

Not always!

School Picture Day is Sept. 14th – if we hear “You Oughta Be in Pictures”, ask yourself: “have they seen any of our school pictures?” They were often accompanied with anxiety - girls trying to find just the right outfit, and young men searching drawers for that elusive clip-on tie. Early in life, we found school pictures were not the most flattering way to capture our youth. If any of us still have those, we look back and wonder “what were we thinking?”...

In grade-school, the haircuts were abominable – bangs were askew, those home perms were atrocious, and the boys’ George Gobel crew cuts were crooked. Smiles were forced making us look like “Chuckie” dolls and borderline frightening. Some showed teeth missing and all we got for them was a quarter under our pillow! Still, our parents proudly passed them out to family and friends with good intentions. If we thought, even at that age, things would get better – we were in for a big surprise – they sometimes did not! We became teenagers.

Did they get better in High School? ... Not always. We were now adolescents which came with even more compromising pictures. The teased hairdo looked as if our head exploded; putting on make-up had not yet been mastered resulting in that ‘Gloria Swanson’/Sunset Boulevard look. Young men were literally faced with shadows of a mustache not quite in full bloom. I had a classmate who thought he would rid himself of that look by using his Mom’s ‘Nair’ to eliminate that mysterious shadow.

The result: he looked like he was melting! Of course, we ALL faced those ugly red bumps that came with growing up, affectionately named ‘zits’. They were the norm for almost all of us and Clearasil became a ritual, right after brushing our teeth. Again, pictures were passed out to family and 5 0 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

friends with parental pride.

Today, Grade Schoolers look as if they’re already in High School, sporting purple streaks in their hair and facial piercings. Gone are the days of youthful innocence. Most carry cell phones worth hundreds of dollars with some costing more than my first car. High School parking lots are of full of cars newer than many of ours. Not sure they even bother with school pictures today – with social media, they seem to be posting pictures of themselves multiple times a day when all we had was a Brownie camera which required having the film developed and waiting...

When I see my old school pictures, I wonder why my Dad even bothered. I didn’t grow out of that ‘look’ for years!! My Son found an old school picture of me once and his comment - “Mom, you look like one of those kids Sally Struthers could feed for 30 cents a day!” Perhaps, we STILL don’t like our pictures – just take a look at the one on your driver’s license! So, maybe our old school pictures were not all that bad.

At my 20th reunion, a man came in who looked familiar, but every woman in the room stopped in mid-sentence.

WOW – he was gorgeous, and he did NOT look like that in High School! But then, neither did we. Thankfully, there was a metamorphosis ahead. Those zits have been replaced with ‘smile lines’! Growing up, getting ready for school pictures usually meant getting out the Clearasil; today, just leaving the house means getting out the BenGay! So, if someone hands you a school picture, remember to smile, say how lovely it

Tara prepares to rip one to right center!

Your Sun City Summerlin Softball Club, now in its 24th year, welcomed 24 new members this past season, including its first two female members in many years. Marcy Gazarek joined the club last summer after participating in club off-season games for several years. Soon after, Tara Belloni signed up after practicing with the Saturday morning women’s group for a few weeks.

Marcy was raised on a farm in Northwest Ohio and began playing softball at age 8 in her county league. She played softball until her freshman year in high school when she began focusing on track & field. She returned to softball in an evening Summerlin co-ed league after moving here 12 years ago with her husband, Mike, the club’s current President.

Tara also grew up in Ohio, near Cleveland, and began playing softball at age 10 and well into her 40’s, primarily in local co-ed leagues, including Las Vegas. Upon retiring from her nursing career, she moved to New Zealand for 12 years leaving softball for rugby (not really) before returning to Las Vegas four years ago and resumed playing.

Marcy played this past season on the National League’s Sun City Summerlin’s “Raiders” team, batting lead-off and was among the best outfielders in the league. Using her track skills, Marcy was called upon by her manager to pinch-run for 5 2 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

teammates nearly every inning, ending the season among the league’s run-scoring leaders.

Tara also played the outfield for the league’s Sun City Summerlin’s “Orange Crush” team, emerging as its top outfielder and batting in the middle of the lineup. She also was called upon to run for teammates on the bases and, in another first, stepped in and managed her team for the final three weeks, leading them to a second-place finish in the league tournament.

Past Club President Bob Stonemetz commended both ladies for their “outstanding on-field performance and ‘sportspersonship’. Great additions to the club!”

Both ladies appreciated how they were welcomed and respected by their fellow members, citing the friendly competition and socialization on (and off) the field. The ladies should also be credited for a general clean-up of “game” language. Speaking of language, they introduced new words to the Pinnacle Field. After an inside-the-park bases loaded home run, an umpire remarked to Riley, Marcy’s 3-year- old grandson “Ga-Ga hit a grand slam!” And Tara was overheard to say “honey” to her ballplayer boyfriend on a number of occasions. Both players are returning for a second season, awaiting the outcome of team drafts for their league and team assignments.

The 2023-24 season’s Opening Day is Monday, September 25th. Four teams will be in action, with the first game starting at 8:30 a.m. At 10 a.m. the club will pause to conduct a ceremony recognizing our club leadership and sponsors, and to thank our community leaders. A second game will follow, and a concession stand opens at 10 a.m. Mark your calendar and “take me (you) out to the ballgame…”.

SECURITY PATROL There is Only One “You”

Ready to take your call!

Your Sun City Summerlin Patrol wants to help you stay safe in your home, on the streets and in your community. We want you to know you have a friendly voice on the phone when you have a concern that we may be able to help resolve. The dispatchers will answer your call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If the patrol is not the solution for your issue, we will try to direct you to the right person for help.

There are a few things you can do to assist our patrol members. Please keep our phone number handy or better yet, program it into your phone. 702-254-2303. It is in the LINK, on the outside of the patrol cars, and on your Sun City Summerlin map. Share this phone number, 702-254-2303, with your friends and family who may live far away. This could be a lifeline in case of an emergency.

There are a few other items you need to put on your “to-do” list. First and foremost, please fill out an Emergency Contact form or, as we call it in patrol, “The Famous Blue Sheet”. They are available at patrol headquarters at the end of the Desert Vista Community Center parking lot by the pickle ball courts.

Or ask for one at the Administration Offices in Mountain Shadows Community Center.

(Theirs may be a white sheet.) Please remember to use at least one local person as an emergency contact. It is difficult to just have your sweet kiddos in another state when our first responders need help. If you are a renter OR HAVE RENTERS in your property, please help to have them on our information data base also.

phrase “Welfare Check”? There may be an occasion where we have the need to request Metro, our Las Vegas Police Department, to do one of those on your property. They do not have legal permission to enter your home without certain information about your usual lifestyle and normal day-to-day habits.

So please become friendly with your neighbors to whatever extent you feel comfortable. It is hard to fathom, but just the fact that you go out to pick up your mail every day at 3 p.m., and the across the street neighbor hasn’t seen you do that in two days, may very well save your life.

Fill out and don’t hide the important paperwork in the “Vial of Life” packet. This is also available at headquarters and should contain pertinent information on you, your medications, your insurance, and how to contact family if needed.

We will keep discussing the importance of lighting at night around your home, illumination on your address numerals, and trimming shrubbery so it is not a hiding place. Then there is that little voice in your head, reminding you to please be careful when you venture out of your house. If you are walking, please use the sidewalks (actually, that is the law). Look both ways before crossing any street. Follow the speed limit (oh yes, another law) and for goodness sake STOP at stop signs (one more pesky law).

A Handy Tip If You Lose Your Doggy!

Dogs’ sense of smell has been estimated to be up to between 1,000 to 10,000 times better than humans can. Therefore, if your dog goes wandering please use a treat like bacon, cooked liver, etcetera, when you are searching. Your fur baby may smell you before he/she hears or sees you.

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Setting The ‘Standards’ The Sun City Summerlin Development Standards are a fundamental piece of our governing documents. They are integral to our CC&R’s and are presented as the architectural and landscaping guide that is designed to maintain our long-term visual character, curb appeal and home values, just as envisioned by the Del Webb Company over 30 years ago.

Since the original document was presented to new Sun City Summerlin buyers in the late 80’s, the Development Standards have been updated several times to keep up with the everevolving tastes and likes of a discerning community.

Such is with the latest version of the Development Standards, which was approved by the Board of Directors on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. The newly approved version is a monthslong effort of the Architectural Review Committee, the Community Standards Office, the Board of Directors, and Residents, to adjust to our changing times and tastes.

The Development Standards, as a governing document, can be restrictive by its very nature, something that we must all appreciate and understand. Such Standards are not unique to Sun City Summerlin but are an integral part of living in any “Common Area Community.”

The basic principles of the Development Standards remain intact as the solid foundation of Sun City Summerlin’s residential “look and feel,” although there are many hundreds of wellthought-out refinements that have been incorporated into the new version.

The fact remains that we are a desert community with a style, natural colors and a “character” that is greatly influenced by where we live. Tile roofs, stucco walls, wrought iron fences, desert landscape and desert decor are here to stay. At the same time, new influences continue to creep into our environment, and it is those influences that the new Standards work to address, while living within the appealing confines of the Southwest Mojave Desert, including our attention to conserving precious water.

As the new Development Standards are distributed to Owners, we encourage all to take a few minutes to read the words and appreciate the real intent of this important document. Keeping it accessible for future reference and guidance with important landscape and exterior home projects is an idea that we strongly encourage.

Finally, the Development Standards are designed to keep us on track with the visions of Del Webb, whose over-55 concept began here and has spread far and wide across our country. It’s hard to argue with the success of that grand idea, and the rules that were put in place, when we consistently rank in the top Barbara Davidson, Director, Community Standards tier of all over-55 communities…Keeping us there is the goal!

The Aquacize Club provides exercise in water that is healthy, low impact, easy on your joints and covers all muscle groups.

Aquacize Club members can choose from several different class times and locations. Classes last about 45 minutes. Blooming Success:

The Rise of the Sun City Summerlin Garden Club The Sun City Summerlin Garden Club, sparked by current President Dave Maiero's interest in gardening, is fast gaining traction. Unable to find an existing club in the community, Maiero took initiative to establish one, quickly garnering support from likeminded residents, Linda Day Harrison and Kenneth Snauwaert included. Their goal: provide a platform to share ideas, discuss techniques, and learn from guest speakers via recurring meetings and hands-on workshops.

Since its approval by the SCSCAI Board of Directors and first meeting attended by 65 people, and the second meeting with over 100 in attendance, the club has actively pursued partnerships with local organizations, schools, and businesses. They aim to host educational events and participate in neighborhood projects to increase the neighborhood's engagement with nature. The club officers hope that the club's activities Plant Swap table. The fabulously decorated Harpsichord visited the Starbright Theater for the club meeting in June this year. Due to the September closing for the remodel of the Pinnacle and the Starbright Theater, there will be no concert in September. Golf, Men’s Niners Golfers of all levels are welcome to enjoy weekly tournaments held on each of our three courses in Sun City Summerlin. Tee off times range from 7-8 a.m., Thursday mornings, depending on the time of year. We have individual play tournaments, scrambles, and best ball events. We also host events at courses throughout the Valley and play out-of-town tournaments twice a year. Presently, we have a two-day trip set for Mesquite on October 16 & 17. The Sun City Volunteers: Helping You Is What We Do Interview with Joan Soltz, Board Member

By Gail Abrams / Link Sun City Summerlin Charities, Inc. d/b/a Sun City Volunteers is a tax-exempt, 501 (c)(3) charity. The group was started in 2007. They are an all-volunteer group of Sun City Summerlin Residents who provide transportation and around-the-home handyman services for neighbors. Currently there are 25 volunteers. Since COVID-19, the group is about 50% less in the number of volunteers.

Since 2007, volunteers have provided over 10,000 transportation, handyman and referral service calls in support of residents. “We meet the needs of the community the best we can,” says Joan. “We are funded solely by contributions. Also, we accept donations for services provided (volunteers do not accept tips).”

The group of volunteers assist residents with medical appointments and some light grocery shopping. In addition, the handyman volunteers help residents with miscellaneous “little fixes” including changing smoke alarm batteries, replacing heating/cooling filters, changing exterior/interior light bulbs, replacing hinges on kitchen/bath cabinets, and resetting landscape water timers.

“We need drivers and handymen,” says Joan. “We are looking for people who are willing to volunteer to give us a few hours a week or a month to help neighbors. With your help, our group will be able to offer our services to more residents in the community.”

Joan became a volunteer six years ago because someone helped her replace the hinges on her kitchen cabinets. “He did such a good job for me, that I became a volunteer as a driver,” says Joan. Now, Joan is a driver, an office person, and a Board member!

“We appreciate your help, anytime you can give it!” concludes Joan. The wonderful thing about this organization is that you can volunteer whenever you want for only what you can do. You can sign up to do early shifts or late shifts.

National Senior Games: SCSCAI Pickleball Club Champions

By Tom Popek, Resident Nancy Popek, a SCSCAI resident and member of the Sun City Summerlin Pickleball Club, recently competed in the National Senior Games held in Pittsburgh, PA, July 9th – 12th, 2023.

Nancy medaled in each of the three events she competed in. She won a Bronze Medal in Women’s Doubles ‘70s (3.0).

Nancy then teamed with Rady Mejia (also a SCSCAI resident and member of the Sun City Summerlin Pickleball Club), to win a Silver Medal in Mixed Doubles ‘75s (3.0).

Nancy capped off her National Senior Games experience by winning the Gold Medal in Women’s Singles ‘75s (3.0).

Stained Glass This glorious abstract rainbow was recently created

by Monica Beumer. It now hangs proudly in her neighbor’s yard where it can be looked at and admired every day. This piece has mostly straight lines and yet the way it was assembled, your eyes are drawn into it. You too can create a project like this if you would like.

Table Tennis We are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. All Sun City Summerlin residents are welcome to play with us for two visits as guests before joining the club. Annual membership dues are $10. Playing Table Tennis has many great health benefits such as improved coordination, balance and reflexes. It’s a great way to get in shape and make new friends.
