PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

T

The Board has approved the FY2025 budget as recommended by the Finance Committee. As you may recall through previous correspondence and our budget hearings, we have all been made aware of a shortfall in our Reserve Funding.

The Reserve report which has now been adopted by the Board was not presented to us in writing until March 15, 2024. Due to the short timeframe in which a new budget had to be developed and presented we did not have all of the information available to us to deliver a solid plan for handling our Reserves long term.

As such and knowing that we need to raise our funding for Reserves we have approved a budget for FY2025 which includes a contribution from each home of $188.16 for Operating Expenses and $19.15 for Reserve Funding on a monthly basis. On an annual basis this equates to $2487.72 per home. At this time no monies have been allocated for New Capital.

The FY2025 budget will provide us with the time to develop a solid plan to fund our Reserves properly going forward. A task force of four individuals with extensive financial backgrounds and a thorough understanding of the Association assets, as well as Reserve studies has been put together to develop a financial plan that will provide a path to place us where we need to be over the next five years.

In addition to the long-range plan being put together by the task force the Board passed a resolution to increase the New Owner Reserve Assessment (NORA). This will require an amendment to our Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs) by a vote of the owners.

The resolution is to set the NORA at $5,000 with an annual increase equal to the Cost-ofLiving Goods and Services index. This index includes the cost of gasoline which was a major factor for the large increases we have seen in product over the past few years.

We sell on average 500 plus homes per year. This change will increase our NORA income by $1.5 million per year and increase annually, due to the cost of inflation mentioned above.

This is equivalent to $16.06 per month/household being contributed to Reserves through NORA. NORA, is only collected at the time a home sells.

If the amendment to NORA passes, it will reduce the burden placed on each of our owners to fund the Reserves going forward. It will require that two thirds of our households (not two thirds of the votes collected) vote and approve of this amendment. This means that we will need 5,214 yes votes to amend the CC&Rs properly.

It is very important that you as a current owner fully understand the above two paragraphs. We must capture this additional $1.5 million annually to put towards our reserve deficit. Failure to pass this vote to amend our CC&Rs to adjust our NORA income, will require that in addition to the normal annual increase to your assessment going forward, there would need to be an additional $16.06 per month/household assessed in order for us to fulfill our fiduciary responsibility in regards to properly funding reserves.

We as a Board are asking for your support. It will help us obtain proper Reserve Funding and free up additional Capital for new projects and improvements within our community.

In closing, the weather is great this time of year so get out and enjoy your amenities of choice. Enjoy a meal and a beverage at The Summit or Tavern at The Falls. Both of our restaurants offer Happy Hour specials and host many fun events. Enjoy watching our Vegas Knights in the NHL playoffs with some friends at The Summit. We are ranked number 3 in the nation for Age Restricted Active Jeff Rorick, President Adult communities. Let’s strive to climb to the top.

WHAT IS A SON

By Patti Tripp, a Single Mother / Link When I was a little girl, I didn’t say to myself, “When I grow up, I want to be a single mother”. With 50% of marriages ending in divorce, that statistic never entered my mind back then. But that’s how it worked out for some of us. Through the years, I was the Mom who taught her son how to throw a football, and why he should NOT adjust his retainer with a pair of needled nose pliers, or simply how to grow into a good man. Not sure why I had even written this back then, but as my son began to grow up and tower over me, I thought about the life we shared. He could be a pain, and a handful, but he was MY handful. A Mother’s love knows no bounds, even though, be they boys or girls, they can drive you right to the edge! But then, Mothers are a unique breed, we even sometimes surprise ourselves. After losing him, it didn’t change the fact that I was and always will be Greg’s Mom, and proud of it. And so, to every Mother, and especially the single Mothers, allow me to share a moment of love...no matter what!

"WHAT IS A SON” A warm tiny hand she holds in her own.

These few precious moments he's hers all alone.

Then diapers and feedings and colic and such she may sit there exhausted; it all seems so much.

Popsicles, root beer, peanut butter and jam. . . her reading now limited to Green Eggs and Ham. There's dirt in his pockets and gum in his hair.

He can't go to sleep without saying his prayers.

Soon bookbags and buses and homework besiege the evening - timeout - gotta go, little league!

It used to be hugs could make everything right.

She'd kiss away tears, tuck him in every night.

Now he's closing the door when he's taking a bath.

No more baby teeth smiles, braces show when he laughs.

His room is a mess - not a thing in its place.

He's wearing a ponytail, growing hair on his face.

He stays out past midnight, spends a fortune on mousse.

He reads Playboy; just when did he quit Dr. Seuss?

He's dressed up, a tuxedo and off to the prom.

She considered suggesting - ‘you could take your mom!’

It’s time to grow up and she has to let go.

But why do it now, can't he just take it slow.

He stands six feet four, his shoes a size twelve.

It seems like just yesterday this toddler from hell had consumed all her time, all her energies, too.

She had raised him alone, with so much to do.

His room is now empty, the posters are gone.

The house is so neat, things are where they belong.

She can't understand just where time has flown, one minute he's helpless, next minute he's grown.

But she'll always be there for him, not knowing when he'll need someone, turn to her, and see his best friend.

Now both of their lives have taken direction.

To go separate ways, yet maintaining connection.

For a while, all they really had was each other.

And what is a son? Well, try asking a mother.

RESIDENTS’ FORUM Ice Cream Social Residents’ Forum is pleased to host one of our most popular, and definitely sweetest events. It’s our Ice Cream Social. On Wednesday, May 8th, at 7 p.m. come join us at Desert Vista Community Center to enjoy a scoop of ice cream with all the toppings. Mark your calendars, forget about the calories and come and have dessert with your neighbors. See some old friends, meet some new ones, just have fun.

We’ll also be hosting our 50/50 raffle that night, maybe you’ll be one of the lucky people to go home with some extra moolah. Tickets are 6 for $5 so bring some cash with you.

Make sure and bring your Resident card to show at the door.

What is National Senior Health & Fitness Day® ?

National Senior Health & Fitness Day® is an annual health and wellness event for older adults. The 31st annual event is set for Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at the Desert Vista Ballroom from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. More than 100,000 older adults will participate in these local health events across the country. The goals of National Senior Health & Fitness Day® are to promote the importance of regular physical activity, and to show what communities and organizations are doing to improve the health of older adults.

What Will Older Adults Do During the Event?

Communities and organizations throughout the country will host senior-related health and fitness events at retirement communities, YMCAs/health clubs, senior centers, park districts, hospitals, houses of worship, local aging groups, and other community locations. The local health and fitness activities will vary widely based on the community or organization hosting the event and the interests of the local seniors they work with. Activities will be non-competitive and may include walking events, low-impact exercises, health screenings and health information workshops.

Nevada Senior Games Since 1980, the Nevada Senior Games have provided an opportunity for people in the second half of their lives to be competitive athletes and have assisted seniors in reaching their health and fitness goals. The games offer Olympic-style events that demonstrate the positive aspects of aging and provide motivation and inspiration. Senior athletes come from all over the state and country to participate in the multi-sport competition specifically for adults age 50 and over. The Fall Games take place in September and October featuring competition in about 20 sports. Fall Games registration will be available on Wednesday, May 29th, at National Senior Health & Fitness Day®!

Meet Faith Franck!

87 years old-Super Ager Faith moved to Sun City Summerlin in 2016 from San Francisco area where she was an IT Network Administrator. She has been physically active her whole life growing up in Manhattan where she walked an average of 5 miles a day.

She plays duplicate bridge, swims, skis, and does Pilates and Gyrotonics.

Faith says she is very lucky to have good genes. Several of the women in her family have lived to 102 and 103. She says that staying physically and mentally active is what keeps her feeling good. I usually fly the flag that covered his coffin (military funeral). And whenever I'm asked to say grace at family dinners it always ends with: God bless all soldiers, sailors and airmen away from their families and in harm’s way. I have celebrated Memorial Day as far back as I can remember.

My dad was in the Army Air Corps during the Second World War as a maintenance officer on the military version of the DC3 called the C-47 in the far east, mainly China and India. Even though he was not a combat soldier he saw things that impacted him throughout his life. This is because I watched my roommate and squadron mate as their plane crashed into the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam. They were never recovered. Additionally, I received notice of my best friend thru flight training on a different carrier that was shot down at low altitude and crashed into the Gulf of Tonkin, never to be recovered. Along with my personal losses, it is a day of reverence for every man and woman who gave their lives for our freedom. God bless those that went to defend our country and never returned. - Bill Knobloch Because of today’s very tumultuous times in the world and we are so very far removed from being touched by war losses, it is our duty to talk about, share and remember those that have gone into combat and fought to give us the freedoms we have today. Celebrating Cinco De Mayo

By Gail Abrams / Link Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on the fifth of May. In the U.S., the holiday commemorates the Battle of Puebla. The single battle was fought on May 5, 1862, between Mexican and the French forces of Napoleon III. The battle was significant given the sheer number of French troops (roughly 6,000) fighting against the Mexican army of about 2,000. Mexicans refer to this historic event as the Battle of Puebla (the small town where the battle ensued). The Mexican Army defeated the French troops. The victory helped bolster the morale of the nation and a shared sense of patriotism.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican American culture with parades, food, mariachi music, and folkloric dancing.

In Mexico, particularly in the City of Puebla, the holiday features military parades and reenactment of the battle.

Honoring Residents Corner: Terry was born and raised in a small town in North Central Massachusetts. She married her high school sweetheart after four years of college. Her husband Jim, served in the Army and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. They have two sons: Jason and Joshua.

Jim began his career as a junior salesman at one of the tool companies in town. More promotions came and the family moved to New Jersey, North Carolina, California and then to Illinois. There, Terry worked as a library aide at her son’s high school. Terry was encouraged to get her Master of Library Science. She went to Rosary College and got her

home.

Terry volunteered at the Springs Preserve as a docent, and then worked in the zoology department preparing meals for the animals. When COVID-19 hit, she left that volunteer position and never went back.

Terry and Jim volunteered with Sun City Patrol in 2018 as drivers. Then, she joined the Recruit Committee and became the Driver Scheduler in 2019. In the spring of 2021, Terry cross-trained as a Dispatcher. That fall, Terry became Head Trainer and Driver Trainer. She went on to serve as Watch Commander in the Summer of 2021. Terry ran for the Patrol Board in 2021 for the first time and she is now serving her second term as Assistant Chief.

“I always feel better when I help somebody” says Terry. The Patrol gives Terry the ability to help others and feel good. Terry has over 6,400 hours with Sun City Patrol!

No sooner had Terry graduated with her Master’s degree than her husband was promoted to VP of Sales and the family moved back to their hometown. Their son Joshua started his sophomore year in the high school where his parents graduated! Terry began her career as the school librarian for middle school and then elementary school.

Jim was offered a new position and they moved to Pennsylvania. Terry became assistant librarian at a county library in Scranton, PA. A couple of years later, Terry was asked to be head of children’s services. Jim then moved the family back to Illinois. There, Terry was head of youth services at a public library.

By this time, Joshua was living in Las Vegas. Terry wanted to move here to be closer to her grandbabies. When Terry retired, they moved to Sun City Summerlin in 2011, and Jim, as President of a tool company start-up, was able to work from

Terry volunteers at her grandkids school library. She is also the Battle for the Books Coordinator for their school. Terry has 3 grandchildren (ages 16, 14 & 11). Her other son lives in Michigan.

Terry recently joined the Canasta Club and Friends of the Summit. She keeps busy with grandma duties.

Sadly, Jim passed in 2020. Their favorite hobby was going to concerts and shows. In their travels they attended many concerts. They especially loved rock & roll. Jim and Terry created a spreadsheet: They attended over 500 concerts and shows!

When she first moved here, Terry got to know the streets in the community by walking. Jim would drop her off at the Pinnacle, or at Smith’s gate, or at Sun Shadows, and she would find different ways of getting home. What a great way to get to know Sun City Summerlin.

Community Conversations: Costs Squeeze Restaurants The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article that related in detail how significantly product and labor costs have impacted the restaurant industry. The first line of the article was “A $16 bacon cheeseburger may not be enough to save your neighborhood bar and grill.” It went on to give several examples of small, local operators who are struggling to survive in today’s world.

Restaurants who made it through the COVID-19 years are now finding that traditional economics no longer work. They now endure surging food costs, labor issues, and supply chain shortages. Despite raising prices, many continue to struggle.

Traffic can be uneven, which can lead to paying staff during idle times. Large take-away oriented chains like Chipotle and fast-food outlets such as Burger King are doing well, while

knows, the cost of many food items has skyrocketed in recent years. Restaurants have been similarly impacted.

While large chains have some purchasing power, smaller individual operations may bear the full brunt of increased costs for their raw materials.

A few examples of how wholesale food items have increased since 2018: Vegetable oil up 75%, French fries up 86%, Onions up 188%, and Eggs up 297%. Ground beef prices have gone from an average of $3.60 to as much as $5.35. Chicken breasts have risen from $3.07 to as high as $4.75. Eggs from $1.77 to as much as $4.80! (US Bureau of Labor Statistics).

The food industry research firm Datassential reports that about 4,500 more independent restaurants closed than opened last year. They also report that one-third of consumers plan to dine out less over the next few months, while half will maintain their dining habits.

What does all this mean for Sun City Summerlin and its two restaurants? They are also responding to the operational pressures related above. Some price adjustments have been

As a percentage of sales, restaurants rely on labor more than other retail sectors, putting increased pressure on margins. The industry average is four to five times more per sales dollar than grocery, clothing, or general merchandise operations. According to surveys, labor costs have been rising faster and longer at restaurants than in the economy as a whole. Keep in mind that labor includes cooks, waitstaff, bussers, etc.

Labor Department figures indicate that average hourly earnings for all restaurant workers have gone from about $12 in 2015 to nearly $18 now. (A 50% increase.) In addition, employee benefit costs have risen significantly over the past several years.

Another major component of restaurant operations is the raw food product. As anyone who buys groceries

required. But they are also working very hard to provide a great value for our residents. As an example, the new Happy Hour menu has been widely praised and attracted more business at both locations. And the menus were updated recently to better reflect the requests of regular customers. The addition of music nights, karaoke, lobby bar for theater shows, and monthly dining specials has also been very positive.

As has been related on several occasions, Del Webb established the restaurants in Sun City Summerlin as part of the amenities of the community. Just as the golf courses, swimming pools, and athletic facilities, they are there for the convenience and enjoyment of our residents. The staff will continue to focus on providing good food at a value for all. If you haven’t visited recently, give them a try. If you are a regular visitor, thank you for your patronage.

We Are Here For A Reason

I remember seeing a tragic accident once and thinking, “Boy, was he in the wrong place at the wrong time!” That is an entirely different discussion, but the converse is definitely true... we are all here for a reason – we may never know what that reason is, but I don’t believe in accidents. I believe there is a reason that we are in this place... at this time... as things are.

Perhaps one of our goals in life is to figure out what those reasons are and what we can learn from all this.

Maybe we are here to be a caregiver for someone we love. Maybe we are here to accomplish something very special for someone or for the world. Maybe we are here to bring joy and happiness to an otherwise dismal situation.

Whatever our mission, we were put here for a reason. Even difficult or challenging events have a reason, a place in the universe for some (likely never known) reason. Our lives have meaning and importance and value.

When I was younger, I do not think I spent much time contemplating life’s meanings. I was too busy living... doing the things I was supposed to do.

Now, a bit older, with a lot more time, I find myself considering the deeper aspects of life, and I think I am learning a lot I never understood.

I have become good friends with an incredible man (and his amazing wife, Lilo) who just celebrated his 100th birthday.

Alex Kuechel survived the Holocaust in Germany and fortunately was able to go on to live a remarkable life in many ways.

He has been an inspiration, motivator, and guide to all who have ever met him. Over the years, Alex has educated countless children and adults on the horrors of the Holocaust. The Six Million+ were murdered and tortured by the Nazis and precious few escaped destruction. Alex is our mentor, our guide, 5 6 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

always possible. Alex is that messenger. He is a very special person with a very special purpose in life.

There is remarkable beauty in nature with amazing symmetry and variety. There is unique harmony, balance and interconnectedness in all living organisms and their environment.

There is a delicate equilibrium which plays a role in maintaining the health and sustainability of all ecosystems. Many cultures hold to the belief that we are all here for a reason. The Native Americans hold to a holistic view of the world, where everything is interconnected and has a purpose, rooted in their

Lilo and Alex Kuechel traditions, values, and knowledge of life. The Hindu philosophy teaches “karma”, the idea that actions have spiritual consequences, balanced in all stages of life. Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Humanism – virtually all faiths understand that there is meaning, purpose, and value to our lives.

So, just as Alex Kuechel is living proof of having a purpose for his life, of being here for a reason... we all can realize that WE are here for a reason, as obscure as it may be at times. It might be worth taking the time to consider what OUR purpose is... in OUR lives. We are not just drifting aimlessly through our days without meaning... we have value, importance, incredible purpose to our lives. We are loved, valued, AND NEEDED. We are HERE FOR A REASON! What is YOURS?

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Being a Considerate Neighbor

Our article last month announced a new feature for the Community that would facilitate the Community Standards Department's processing of ARC applications and make proactive enforcement of the Governing documents possible. As we are working on implementing the Smartwebs software, we haven't stopped responding to complaints for alleged violations.

If you see weeds in the yards while walking your dog or your new neighbor keeps their trash cans next to your kitchen window and you are not comfortable talking to them, please call us, and we will address the issue.

If you have received a violation notice and have questions, or if the action you are required to take needs to be clarified, please call our office. We are here to provide information and support to everyone.

We also ask our fellow residents to look for weeds in their yards. With the much-needed rain we've been having lately, weeds grow uncontrollably. Please clean up your yard. If you are using professional help, please tell your gardener not to

blow leaves and debris onto the neighboring yards or the street but instead collect them for bulk trash pickup days. And remember the backyard. Even though it is not visible from the street, please do not stack the clutter, neglect the landscaping, or postpone the fence paint refreshment. Neighbors do not want to look at an eyesore while enjoying the weather on the back porch.

Also, look at the bushes and trees close to the property lines. Please trim branches encroaching into your neighbors' yards or growing over the street or sidewalk. We understand that upkeeping the yard can be challenging for some of you. But remember, most people are willing to assist, so ask your neighbor for help, depending on your relationship with them.

SUN CITY SUMMERLIN PATROL What Are You Doing Next Month???

What could you be doing next month? Maybe you could be doing the same thing as last month or maybe you could be finishing your training to be an important part of our community.

That is as a full-fledged member of Sun City Summerlin Patrol.

It is a new season, new friends, new goals and an opportunity to look amazing in a new uniform.

All Patrol members work in 4-hour shifts, so their duty is brief but so very important. The organization has a remarkable book of policies and procedures that guide each person during their assignments.

Important to everyone are the Dispatchers who tie all the details together. At the phone lines and on the radio during every shift, they pass along important updates as they keep meticulous computer records. Working with each shift is the Watch Commander, an experienced group leader with answers to almost any question that might arise.

Most every person going through Sun City Summerlin also passes by the Information Centers (I.C.’s) at each major entrance. These are manned by IC Officers 7 days a week, during daylight hours. They are prepared to give directions, answer questions about our community and keep in close contact with the Dispatchers at the Patrol Base Office. This office is located at the very end of the Desert Vista Community Center Parking Lot. Someone is always in attendance if residents need assistance.

In addition, there are all of the Trainers, Schedulers, Social Event Coordinator, Special Event Chair, Uniform Officer, and the list of support staff continues. There is a place for YOU in this amazing organization. Stop by the base offices or flag down a driver. It starts with a conversation and can bring you years of feeling fulfilled with helping to continue the tradition of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”.

The most visible members of Patrol are the Drivers, on the road 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. They travel Sun City Summerlin streets, watching over our residents, our pets, our homes and the community property. The best type of shift is a quiet one, give out a couple of bottles of water or directions to a person new to the community. Many of our drivers go out with a partner or spouse.

The cars they drive are furnished by the Sun City Summerlin Homeowners Association and kept in tiptop shape by the Motor Officer and his/her helpers. The Wash Crew is a committed group, busy every week going through the vehicle, cleaning and vacuuming down to the tiny bits of dust on the floor. Each car has supplies in case of an emergency. Most importantly they have maps so new members don’t lose their way.

Supporting these drivers is the Patrol Board of Directors, elected by the membership. They have different titles than usual group officers with a Chief, Assistant Chief, and Personnel Officer, but also have the obligatory Secretary and Treasurer. These folks have so many responsibilities; it is Steve Douglass difficult to list them all.

mos recounts the history of the Guys and Gals Golf Club: “Sometime in the early 1990s, two couples who (we believe) were from CA migrated to LV. Their names were Ted and Linda Skelley and Jackie and Jim Manuel. They started playing golf every Friday afternoon. People noticed they were having fun and asked if they could join in. They established the Couples Club.

Years later, the Guys and Gals Golf Club was officially established on June 26, 1996.”

The Club’s motto: “If you can’t have funn, you’re not allowed to join!” Why 2 n’s? Because club members have twice as much fun!

They have close to 200 members with 90-110 signing up for each tournament.

“Our members are such an incredibly nice group of people, says Amos. If you had to hand-pick them, you could not do better!”

“The Club offers residents the opportunity to meet new people,” says Dave. Residents can socialize and the tournament and social events bring people together. Players are paired based on their skill level, which makes the competition as fair as possible. You can sign up as a foursome, or a twosome. If you are a single player, we try to find you a playing partner. “We offer everyone the same opportunity to win,” says Dave. Club members play 18 holes of golf in about 5 hours (100+ people). Amos, Chris, and Dave work with Shane Sanchez, Head Golf Pro at Palm Valley, to coordinate an entire year of play dates and times. Many Club members request the tournament schedule early each year so that they can plan their vacations and not miss any tournaments.

Valley and Highland Falls for 10 months of the year, and in July & August, when it is starting to “warm up”, they play at Eagle Crest (it is a shorter course, and they are in and out in about 3 hours). Many of our players socialize with lunch and a fine beverage after the tournaments.

Twice a year there are social events for the members – dinners to mix and mingle off the course. One follows the Golf Championship in April/May and one during the Holidays. Prizes for the Most Outstanding golfers are awarded, there is a raffle and music, good food and drinks are offered, and a good time is had by all. Both events are well attended. The Club’s officers, Sue Andrews (Treasurer), Christy Fleurat (VP), Kathy MacDougall (Secretary) and the Handicap Cochairs, Clint and Andrea King, work with the Klees and Amos to put on a successful event for the Club Members.

“A terrific group of people! We probably have members from 40+ states in our Club,” says Dave.

“This is a great, great community,” says Amos. “We have met so many nice folks, and we know that there are dozens more to meet!”

Aquacize What could be more fun than to exercise in the pool! It's low impact to joints. Club Members can choose from several different classes. Beginning May 1 there will be a 7 a.m. class at DV outdoor pool. The next General Meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on May 20th, at Desert Vista. We will be covering and voting on many topics: increasing the dues to $10, Operation Procedures, Budget, holding raffles at meetings, changes to Special Events and filling Hospitality Chair position. Basketball Please join us and help make basketball a community exercise option for everyone. Currently, our basket is at Desert Vista on a pickleball court. The court's hard surface, availability, and dimensions are extremely challenging. We’ve asked for the basket to be relocated to a knee-friendly surface at the end of a tennis court or a new court built over an existing underutilized outside area. The court is reserved for shooting on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 pm and Tuesdays & Thursdays evenings from 5-8 p.m. We currently play half-court games twice a week at a local gym. Bicycle The Bicycle Club does group rides starting at the lower Desert Vista parking lot on Tuesday and Thursday and Sun Shadows on Saturday. Sun City Summerlin Patrol Sun City Summerlin Patrol is a volunteer organization made up of residents of the SCS community. We are the eyes and ears of the community, providing 24-hour patrol of the Association’s roads. Members serve as drivers, dispatchers, and Information Center volunteers.
