BOARD’S MESSAGE F

ebruary is an important month in the Sun City Summerlin year. It is when our annual election process for the Board of Directors takes place. It is the results of the election process that forms the Board for the governance of our community Association. As such, it is very important for our homeowners to be informed, evaluate candidates, and elect a suitable group of Directors. Previous messages in the Link have detailed some of the qualities of a good board member (refer to the November 2023 issue, page 4) so we don’t have to rehash those now.

In late January a ballot envelope was sent to all homeowners of record. Each address in Sun City Summerlin has a ballot, and each allows for three votes for the three open positions. Included with the ballot and return envelope is an insert which contains the candidate statement and flyer noting their candidacy. All ballots are confidential, but to ensure security and one ballot for each home, there is a code tied to the address. Replacement ballots can be obtained at the Mountain Shadows Administration Office and will cancel the original ballot.

In addition to the candidate page in the election mailing, all candidates had a page in the January Link. And there were two community functions where homeowners could meet the candidates, ask questions, and find out more directly from those running. (A recording of the meeting is also available on our website.)

Ballots can be mailed in. Or they can be placed in the large ballot box found next to the Monitor Desk at Mountain Shadows. This locked box is not opened until the Election Committee does so on counting day, February 28. All ballots are scanned, counted, and verified by the Election Committee. The only involvement of staff is to provide computer support. In addition, the process is open to the public and can be viewed on Zoom.

There are approximately 7,781 eligible ballots which could be returned. Over the past few years, we have averaged about 3,000 voters casting ballots. Frankly, that is a disappointing result! Less than half of our homeowners are determining the future of how our HOA is governed.

In general elections our community has an outstanding record of voter turnout. And for that you must go to a voting location, stand in line, and cast your vote. Or it can be mailed in with an absentee ballot. For our election, it is simply marking a card with your choices and dropping it in the mail or the ballot box. We have made it as simple as possible.

Bottom line – we are asking all our homeowners to please take part in the important process of electing our Board Directors. If you haven’t done so already, please dig that election mailing out of your pile, fill it out, and send it in. Your participation is greatly appreciated.

Remember, the Board works for you! If you don’t participate in voting, how can you expect to be represented.

In the January issue we ran an article regarding the important matter of providing emergency responders easy access to your home. The article was well received and recognized as important to our community. Additional information has been provided, and we would like to clarify a few points.

One of the suggestions was to utilize the commercially available Knox Box, which contains a key to the house. Fire Station 107 of Las Vegas Fire/Rescue was quite helpful as to how we should approach this matter. The Fire Department recommends using certified Knox Boxes which are keyed for the local jurisdiction. All City of Las Vegas stations have a master key which allows access to a home’s box. However, this is a fairly expensive option, and may discourage some homeowners from proceeding.

A simple and economical solution is to install a combination lock box, as shown in the Link article. Fire Station 107 suggests that any resident who bought such a box contact them with the combination and the City of Las Vegas can attach it to the 911 information for the address. Thus, when a resident calls 911 their address pops up on the computer and any special information is provided to the responding units. The combination can also be provided to your emergency contact so that they could give it to responders as needed.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS Vote Now for Sun City Summerlin Board of Directors As you read this article, you should have received your packet in the mail to vote for your choice of candidates running to serve on the SCSCAI Board of Directors. If you have not received your large, white envelope with the red marking “SCSCAI Election Materials Enclosed, Time Sensitive”, please contact the Administrative Office at Mountain Shadows, 9107 Del Webb Boulevard.

There is one envelope per property, not per resident.

The envelope contains everything you need to know about the 5 candidates running for the Board. There are statements to acquaint you with their qualifications and experience as well as a disclosure statement required by Nevada State Law, which states that the candidate is a member in good standing with the Association and has no conflict of interest in serving on the Board. Each candidate participated in a Residents’ Forum sponsored “Meet the Candidates” evening on January 10 and a recording of that event is linked on the SCSCAI web page for your review or in case you missed it (see link below*).

Most importantly, in the packet you received via mail, you will find the yellow ballot you need to vote. There are three Board positions open, each with a three-year term and the top vote recipients will be elected to the Board. Please read the instructions on the back of the ballot carefully so your vote will be counted. Note that you MUST use the ballot envelope to return your ballot and you should NOT write anything on that envelope – no return address. Do not cover the bar code as it is needed to validate your ballot. To ensure privacy, the envelope will be separated from the ballot before counting.

All ballots must be received at Mountain Shadows no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. Please make sure that you mail your ballot in time for it to be received by the deadline, or you may hand deliver it to the Administrative Office at Mountain Shadows and place it in the ballot box. Ballots must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

Counting of the ballots will take place at the Annual Membership Meeting starting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. The new Board will take office at the 9 a.m. meeting on Thursday February 29, 2024. Ruth Mintz – “My husband and I moved to Sun City Summerlin while Del Webb Corp. was still a big part of the board operation. Through the years, leadership has changed and not always for the best, so when I was asked to join the Election Committee a few years ago, I felt it was a chance to make sure I was a part of the fair and equal election process.

Having been an election worker in a Chicago suburb, I was very aware of the work involved. I am pleased to say that it has been a pleasure working with this dedicated Committee as well as with Mitzi and her wonderful staff.”

Melanie Spector – “I am honored to be a volunteer on the SCS Board Election Committee. I have been on this Committee for 4 years, and I am pleased to be able to use my background in non-profit organizations and administration to assist the democratic process of our community. While it is my pleasure to serve, I really consider it my civic responsibility to participate in making SCS the amazing place it is today. We are blessed with wonderful volunteer/staff management in our community, and I am honored to do what I can to help. My thanks to everyone for participating in this vital function of SCS.” Sofia Castille – “My husband and I looked for several years for the perfect place to live our best lives. Information and Sign-up Instructions for AARP Tax-Aide Program AARP volunteers will again provide free Federal income tax preparation. The program will run from February 1 to April 13. This service will be offered in the Mint Room at Mountain Shadows on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays. Our hours are from 9 a.m-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.

Lately I’ve been feeling like time is really speeding up; that we have access to so much information it has become overwhelming. I was always thinking about the next course of action to take, running to do lists in my head, thinking of past actions or people and future actions to be taken.

How many thoughts do you think pass through your brain on a given day? A recent Cleveland Clinic study stated, “Your brain is a three-pound universe that processes 70,000 thoughts each day using 100 billion neurons that connect at more than 500 trillion points through synapses that travel 300 miles an hour.” Wow! What can we do to slow life down for the quality of our lives to be more peaceful and manageable? According to my research, the practice of mindfulness may be a tool one can use to achieve such a goal.

What is mindfulness? It is a mental training practice that teaches one to slow down racing thoughts, let go of negativity and calm both your mind and body.

One of the leaders who started teaching mindful meditation in 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn, said being mindful is “not about mastery, it’s about being good enough. For what? For whatever it takes for you to live the life that’s yours to live, with a degree of happiness, kindness and a sense of belonging, a sense of meaning and purpose.”

There are different methods to practice learning how to be mindful throughout your day and/or meditating on mindfulness. Also, it turns out that there are significant benefits from doing so.

These benefits include reduced stress, improved immunity, better sleep, lower heart rate, more attention to details and listening to others, to name a few.

Briefly described here are steps to mindful meditation: Ÿ Take a seat. Ÿ Set a time limit. Ÿ Feel your breath moving in and out of the body. Ÿ Notice when your thoughts wander off your breathing, allowing them to come and go as if they were simply clouds moving across the sky free of any judgment. Ÿ Be kind to your wandering mind and have patience with it. Ÿ Close with kindness to yourself and gratitude.

How long should you meditate? Research neuroscientist Amishi Jha discovered that twelve minutes of meditation, five days a week “can protect and strengthen your ability to pay attention.” For some readers just starting out with this practice, even five minutes working up to twenty minutes eventually would be a good start.

On a daily basis, observing your thoughts without judgment is mindful practice. Are you thinking of the present moment or of the past and future events? Focus on what you are doing right now, in this minute, whether it be taking a walk observing your surroundings, petting your animal, or chewing your food.

There are many resources from respected leaders in this field on YouTube for further information.

From my experience it does take some patience as in the beginning I found myself drifting off into thoughts quite frequently. But with practice, I continue to see that it does get easier to do.

Cian Coey is currently the lead female vocalist for Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas. She has also performed lead vocals and toured with Meat Loaf and Dweezil Zappa. Cian joined Meat Loaf’s band (The Neverland Express) in 2014 and has toured the US and Canada with him and performed in his two Vegas-based show runs as well. After Meat Loaf’s last tour, Cian joined Dweezil Zappa and toured with the band until 2020. Cian resides in Las Vegas, where she performs the lead female singer role in RAIDING THE ROCK VAULT and sings in various cover bands. February is chosen because it is a time when many people reflect on matters of the heart, including love and relationships. It is a fitting opportunity to also emphasize the importance of heart health.

How to Promote Heart Health Improving heart health involves making conscious choices to reduce risk factors and adopt heart-healthy habits. Here are some ways to promote heart health during Heart Month and beyond:

History of Heart Month Heart Month has a long history dating back to the 1960s when it was initiated by the American Heart Association (AHA) in the United States. Since then, it has grown into an international observance, with various countries and organizations participating in heart health awareness activities.

Activities like walking, cycling, and swimming can help improve cardiovascular fitness (see page 35 for Heart Health Walk). Ÿ Quit Smoking: If you smoke, seek support to quit smoking. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. THE QUILTING CLUB

PROUDLY KEEPS THE TRADITION OF QUILTS OF VALOR® ALIVE

By Gail Abrams/Link The Quilting Club was established in 1992. Last year, there were 76 members. Residents are encouraged to visit the quilt room and join the club. Presently, Diane Lais is President of the Club and Carole Nelson is the Chairperson for Quilts of Valor® (QOV).

Diane and Carole, both club members for 9 years, explain the steps that go into creating a QOV: All club members participate in the design of a QOV. The quilt usually measures 55” x 60-70”. Quilt kits are given out to club members. The quilt kits contain star blocks. The stars in the blocks represent the Military. They are always three colors: red, white, and blue. Once the star blocks are made, they are combined into a quilt top and sewn together. Carole then gives the quilt to Louise Davenport (Director of Valor Quilters of Nevada).

She does the “long arming” (explained below). Once completed, the quilt is returned to the club and a label is attached (detailing who made each part of the quilt). The QOV recipient will receive a certificate detailing his/her name and rank. In addition, the recipient’s name and rank is sewn on the label of the quilt. It can take 2-3 months to complete a QOV. There is no cost to the recipient for the QOV. “Long Arm” is the quilting process that is done by a “long arm” machine that sews together a large area of cloth.

Diane and Carole welcome Sun City Summerlin residents to come forward with the name of individuals who may qualify as a QOV recipient. The Quilting Club has been involved for 10 years with QOV. The ceremony honoring a Veteran is very moving. Louise Davenport reads the text on the certificate. Then, she calls out the Veteran’s name to recognize him/her. Louise and members of the Quilting Club take the quilt up to the recipient, wrap him/her in the QOV and say: “Welcome Home.”

One of the QOV recipients was a male member of the club. He was in his 80’s when he joined the club after his wife passed (she was a club member). One day, he stopped into the club quilt room with quite a few quilts that his wife had not finished. Low and behold, the club members taught him how to quilt! He was a club member for 10 years, well into his 90’s.

The club has fun events scheduled during the year. In May, they have a picnic. Their recent Holiday Party was a great success. Diane organizes a tea party for new members. She is planning a Chairperson Appreciation Luncheon to thank members who chair different functions within the club.

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Being The Best That We Can Be

The Over-55 Active Adult Planned Community phenomenon first emerged in the U.S. in 1954 with about 200 homes being built on a remote 325acre farm in Youngstown, Arizona, about 25 miles northwest of Phoenix.

The over-55 retirement concept had taken root and, as the Barbara Davidson, Director, Greatest Generation “came of Community Standards age”, the Del Webb Sun City Arizona community sprouted in 1960, producing the longest running restricted-age community in the U.S. On the opening weekend over, 100,000 visitors viewed the striking new community and by 1978, nearly 25,000 homes had been built in the desert.

The Sun City Arizona community kicked off the spread of Del Webb’s empire and in 1989 Sun City Summerlin opened its temporary sales office in Summerlin, offering the first 400 homes for sale. The rest is history, and those original 400 homes soon increased into the 7,781 Las Vegas Valley residences we know today.

Now over 30 years old, Sun City Summerlin has consistently maintained a top-tier position on the list of the best over-55 communities in the U.S., which is a huge accomplishment considering the availability of emerging concepts, features, and amenities. It is estimated that about 5,000 over-55 communities exist in the U.S. today, bringing with them a very competitive marketplace.

Maintaining a leading position in this environment is no small feat and Sun City Summerlin has repeatedly risen to the occasion with upgrades and improvements to its extensive ame-

nities and the ongoing attention paid to the maintenance of facilities and landscaping.

Importantly, Sun City Summerlin’s status as a premier community has been greatly enhanced by the continuing interest and attention that Owners pay to their own homes and yards, and that will be a critical element to our future success.

My friend and I had just finished enjoying a McRib over lunch when a gentleman came over and asked “Are you ladies done? Let me take your trays and put your trash in the bin for you”. Never saw him before, but thought, what a kind, unexpected gesture - what a nice thing for someone to do for strangers! Perhaps all is not lost...

Just what would it take to do something nice?

It needn’t cost money, so doesn’t come with a price.

You could hold the door open, and let someone else through when the person ahead just let the door slam on you.

You come to a stop sign, just hold back for a minute.

You don’t have to be first – you’re not racing to win it.

Make a kind, simple gesture when it isn’t ‘expected’.

Send a card to a friend to make them feel re-connected.

You find a stray shopping cart adrift in the lot, so put it back in the rack, clear that blocked parking spot.

If a trash can is found in the street end of day, move it back on the curb, out of any car’s way.

At the checkout, move items up close to the clerk – there’s a chance they’ve already faced their share of jerks.

Forget about email and forget sending a text, try talking in person - a “conversation” comes next!

We all know there’s someone who’s just sitting at home a phone call might help them feel NOT so alone!

Say “Bless You” if a stranger should happen to sneeze.

Maybe use words more often like ‘you’re welcome’, and ‘please’.

Has the world that we live in made us so out of touch – that just being thoughtful doesn’t matter that much?

You may not get ‘thanked’, but simply do it because they may pay it forward or just give them pause.

Be they younger or older, just do something nice.

It will make you feel better without thinking twice.

It may become second nature, and just make you smile, and turn into a habit not done once in a while.

A small act of kindness leaves its mark, so you see – so, if you read what I write – here’s a “Thank You” from me...

Winter, spring, summer, fall; sound familiar? Those were the seasons most of us lived through in a former life. Now we have F1, rodeo, fireworks, ice hockey, and football (to name just a few). Las Vegas does have a fascinating procession of spectacles year-round. BUT, if you are ready to put a little more structure in your life, consider membership with the Sun City Summerlin (SCS) Patrol. We will train you for a position of your choice, driver, dispatch, or information officer. These could lead to promotions into leadership positions.

Our neighbors in Sun City Summerlin count on us to be available 24/7 to help or guide them to the proper help. Stop by or call our base of operations at the end of the Desert Vista parking area. The folks in the SCS Patrol are some of the very best you will ever meet. May be the most rewarding experience you will ever have.

Owners must register their contact information and microchip numbers with the microchip registration company and Animal Protection Services through the animal pet licensing program; if there’s a change in ownership, information must be changed within 30 days.

The new requirements do not apply to: Ÿ An animal whose owner has resided within the city fewer than 30 days Ÿ An animal brought into the city temporarily for a show or exhibition Breeders will be required to comply with the new ordinance.

They need to ensure that all dogs and cats offered for sale have been microchipped before being transported to a pet shop or sold.

Violations of the ordinance will result in a misdemeanor and upon conviction may be punished by a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment of up to six months or a combination of both.

In the next few months, our Animal Protective Services team will establish programs to encourage and facilitate microchipping.

Honoring Residents Corner:

Dorothy Schulze 100 Years Young

In my opinion, Dorothy has done a lot in her 100 years and has served as a role model for me.

Dorothy had to drop out of high school at 17 and yet at 30, studied for and got her American citizenship.

As a single mother for a number of years, she taught herself to sew and knit to make clothes for her two young children.

She met and married an Air Force officer and partnered with him in his military career. She facilitated the family’s many moves to duty stations in Hawaii, Europe and the East Coast and continued when her husband started a second career with CargillAg weighing grain trucks in Pasco, WA, until he retired as an Area Manager for one of the Nebraska grain elevators.

Dorothy’s fortieth decade was full of accomplishments and rich in experiences. Nearly drowning as a child, Dorothy learned to swim, got her GED and took classes earning a Cosmetology License, and with her husband, rode as a passenger on a decked-out Honda Anniversary Gold Wing motorcycle traveling from one coast to the other and up through Canada, the land of her birth.

In her 50’s Dorothy took up golf and tennis. She was lucky enough to achieve at least one Hole in One and possibly two on courses here in Sun City Summerlin.

While not one to be a “joiner”, she participated in the Just Sew Club because she delighted in making garments for new babies in local hospitals.

Dorothy became a widow in 2009. Even through grieving she continued her pattern of giving to others and for several years benefited the Nevada Partnership for Youth, Safe Nest and homeless youth at Cimarron Memorial High School.

While life didn’t allow her to pursue her dream to be a doctor, Dorothy raised children who were successful in their careers: a daughter who achieved her bachelor’s degree and retired as a Federal employee and a son who had his own martial arts studio and later retired from the Australian court system. She’s also a great-great grandmother.

A Cupcake and Coffee Event was held for her at the Tavern at the Falls on December 18 where 20 of her friends were able to join in the celebration.

Classical Music On February 26, at 7 p.m., the Classical Music Club will be presenting a program at the Starbright Theater featuring Sirocco Flutes. This is a flute choir consisting of 12 flautists, performing a wide variety of material, from classical to contemporary.

Gun Whether you are new to firearms, considering purchasing your first weapon, or are an old hand in shooting arts, the gun club is looking for you. Meetings are indoors and outdoors. Musicmakers We are a four-part harmony ensemble of singers and a group of musicians playing a variety of instruments. Regular choral sessions are Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-3 p.m. at the Pinnacle Music Studio. Instrumentalists are at 3-5 p.m. The choral group traditionally does two performances a year at the Starbright Theatre, in the late spring and around the holidays in December. Sun City Summerlin Patrol is a volunteer organization made up of residents of the SCS community. We are the eyes and ears of the community, providing 24-hour patrol of the Association’s roads. We’re here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Travel (Local) Sun City Summerlin Travel Club meets monthly on the second Wednesday, at 3 p.m. at Desert Vista, Room 5. All activities, including membership dues, are paid by CHECK. NO CASH.
