Inclined Chamber of Timeless Music: Sonic Tales…… of the Aged

We understand time as linear but perceive it subjectively. Inclined Chamber ofTimeless Music is both a lens through which to read the passing of time and an instrument to provide comfort to the loneliness of contemporary life in Tokyo. Through creative collaboration between the elderly and contemporary musicians, it facilitates new inter-generational connections that may have otherwise been lost. Sound and time are experienced by negotiating the two overlapping axes of the project. The Garden of Recital allows music and audio to echo from the chamber below. The archive connected offers the elderly a place to record their music tradition, stories and the young, a place to discover it.

MECHROPOLIS

unfilmed/unbuilt narrative architectural spaces

MECHROPOLIS is a decaying industrialized city. Though being inhabited by robots, it is not mechanical or lifeless. Looking through Josef and Berta’s recollection of memories, the city is about spaces being manifested by the emotions of the characters, questioning, ‘To what extent, is it a reality? Or a fantasy?’. Based on the popular point-and-click adventure game “Machinarium” by Amanita Design, MECHROPOLIS explores the spaces engaging with the emotions through projection-like images overlaid with rusty and oxidized materials showing the organic decay and traces of time. Taking inspiration from the original game and real metaphors from David Summers’ “Real Spaces”, spaces of MECHROPOLIS are visualized to emulate the retro futuristic steampunk style playing with the shape language in conveying the atmosphere and emotions of the characters.

Sydney Fish Market proposal

From the late 1800s until around the mid-1900s, Sydney’s Black Wattle Bay has been both the assembly site and the waste disposal site for the industrial factories. A significant amount of chemical and industrial waste was disposed into the by for long periods of time causing the Bay and its biodiversity to be severely damaged. Extensive disposal of chemical and hazardous waste throughout the history of the bay has not only polluted the local water but also the marine life ecosystems around the site.

The Agri_Aqua Culture is a networked fish market, with its system of collection and distribution of the products on the site. A range of agricultural and aquacultural components with essential administrative systems to efficiently operate the fish market is key in the network to enable the production-processing distribution cycle. Secondary selfsustaining systems play a crucial role in backing up the main network, to stand strong if any shortcomings are encountered. The Agri_Aqua Culture aims to establish a self-sustainable environmental network that helps provide a better environment for biodiversity, restore marine wildlife ecosystems, promote environmental awareness, and reach out to not only locals but also global markets for organic vegetational, livestock, and marine produce of the sustainable fish market system.

Lonsdale Office-Hotel Tower

Located in-between Lonsdale Street and Little Lonsdale Street, and beside Merriman Lane, is the Lonsdale Office-Hotel Tower. It is a design proposal for a 46-level building that accommodates two podium levels for retail, 26 levels for office, 13 levels for hotel and a rooftop bar with sky pool and entertainment facilities. The building setback facing Lonsdale Street provides an active street frontage with a covered podium, allowing access for office lobby and on Little Lonsdale, a hotel entrance, and a pick-up/drop-off zone due to its lower traffic volumes.

The key design concept of the project is sculpting of the building mass to break up Melbourne’s strong wind force that may cause wind vortices. Vortex shedding is minimized by allowing 7500mm corner chamfers at either one or two corners on different zones (typical office and hotel levels) of the building.

The tower’s envelope design considers passive sustainability strategies, activation of street frontage on the ground level and introduction of a unique aesthetic to Melbourne CBD. The envelope is consisted of a double-glazed unitised curtain wall system on all sides and an additional second outer skin on the North and West facades. The North façade is made of a 16.75mm photovoltaic glass system with a solar amorphous silicon layer at 20% transparency, ensuring the efficiency level of solar energy generation in relation to cost, while maintaining unobstructed views from the indoor spaces.

Supported by glass fins, the double-glazing laminated glass system of the crown is incorporated as the safer option for over-head application and aims to maximize views and provide the occupiable roof top terrace with partial protection from the environment, especially against the upwind forces. The glass façade helps making the crown stand out more prominently as a design feature that houses various public amenities including a sky bar, restaurant, swimming pool and gym. Illuminated at night, the crown’s unique form becomes a dynamic beacon contrasting against to Melbourne CBD’s typically flat high-rise rooftops.
