To all of our friends and neighbors: We would like to welcome you to the 55th Sumter County Fair. We strive to have a traditional fair with activities for every member of your family. We have made some new renovations to Old McDonalds Barn this year and our thanks to Parker Fencing, T&D Concrete, Evans Hardware, and so many others who have lent a hand to make this happen. So stop by, stay awhile and visit. We hope you will enjoy these changes. To the great Sumter Fair Board who spent so many hours planning and creating your Fair, I thank them for all their hard work. Why Our Products Are Cheaper:
Because Canada's drug prices, along with our global affiliates, are regulated by their government, the pharmaceutical industry negotiates with the government to keep prices affordable. Here in the U.S., there are no government price controls. Therefore, the pharmaceutical firms set the drug prices to profit more. For this reason, the same drugs cost up to 70% less when purchased from Canada and our global affiliates.
Nationwide Shipping Available *Prices above do not include shipping and handling. Shipping and handling only $9.95. **All prices above are for generic drugs and are subject to change.

Fun rides coming to the 2010 Sumter County Fair ROSE DAVIS EXECUTIVE EDITOR It’s Sumter Fair time and with it comes the return of more midway rides and games, according to Reithoffer Shows, midway providers for the Feb. 26 March 6 Sumter Fair. Reithoffer will bring more than 20 rides to Sumter County with kiddie rides for younger fairgoers and rides for thrillseekers. Reithoffer Shows is a fivegeneration midway provider that began in 1896 when founder Julius Reithoffer started the show with the purchase of a steam-driven carousel. Reithoffer has been providing midway rides and games in Sumter for five years, according to Barbara Kane, fairgrounds manager.
“We invite you and your family to come out and enjoy the rides and all the fair has to offer,” said Kane. They are bringing many fair favorites with kiddie rides and thrill rides. They have the Dutch Wheel, the biggest portable Ferris wheel in the country. Kids Day will be held on Friday, Feb. 26. The fair opens at 3 pm; all students with a student ID card can enter the fair free and can purchase a $15 armband to ride on the midway until the fair closes. Reithoffer will also provide midway games, water games, kiddie games and food concessions during the nine-day Sumter Fair. The Sumter County Fairgrounds is located less than a half mile from the County Road 48/State Road 471 intersection in Bevilles Corner and two miles north of the world renowned Webster Flea Market. Adult admission to the Sumter fair is $5 for adults ages 13 and up, $3 for children ages 6 to 12 and under age 5 is free. There will be armband specials each day.

Make some memories at the Sumter County Fair
ROSE DAVIS EXECUTIVE EDITOR
If you close your eyes and think back to the first time you saw or heard the sound from your county fair, you will quickly recall the fun and excitement associated with fair time. The 55th Annual Sumter County Fair begins Friday, Feb. 26 at 3 pm at the fairgrounds located two miles north of Webster off State Road 471. “We are excited about the fair and we look forward to all the fun events for Sumter residents. The first day is Kid’s Day that will set the tone for an exciting fair that continues through Saturday night March 6 with a variety of events, entertainment and shows,” said Sumter Fairgrounds Manager Barbara Kane. “I’m in my seventh year at the Sumter Fair. The fair is important to me. I think it is knowing even after all the years people still enjoy becoming part of the fair it is heartwarming,” Kane said. The fair has something for everyone. Rides, fireworks, animal shows and exhibits to name a few. “A county fair is not just a place to get on the rides and pig out on fair food. It really is so much more. I see more of it every year, I see kids that were just little people and all of sudden they are grown up. I see youngsters making commitments in showing and selling their animals, the first timers, heart bro-
ken when the animal is sold. But this to is a lesson but hopefully one that was well learned and will be with them through the years. It doesn't matter what age you exhibit something at the Fair and you win a blue ribbon there is no denying just by looking at them - it is a moment. This Fair is a representation of our community and children, it is us and who we are and you can see that through all the exhibit halls,” Kane said. Through the effort of volunteer support and county support the fair comes around each year. A 14 member fair board made up of volunteers work to make the events as much fun as they can. “I have seen a lot of different board members through the years good, bad, indifferent, but this board is one of the better ones. They are committed to the youngsters and they try to make things right which is not always easy but when it is all said and done they have made the right decisions. I guess we would not be on the 55th year if we were always wrong,” said Kane. “The fair is for the community, please come and be part of it,” Kane said. The highlight of the fair is the annual youth swine and steer shows. The youth livestock shows began at the fair in Bevilles Corner in 1955. The livestock shows are a huge part of the annual fair. On Friday, Feb. 26, a fireworks display will highlight the first day of fun. During Kids Day the fun

Pigs are not dirty. They can't sweat, so they roll in the mud to keep cool.
Pigs make funny sounds like grunts and squeals.
A pig can run a seven-minute mile.
Domesticated pigs eat ground up corn, soybeans, wheat, and grain sorghum. Laurian Keen with “Yummy”
The skin on pigs is pink, but the hair can be different colors.
Hogs do not overeat. They eat until they are full. The heaviest hog in history, Big Bill, weighed 2,552 pounds.
Hogs are smart animals. They learn to push a lever in the barnyard to get a drink of water or a dish of food. They have been taught to tumble, race, pull carts, dance and hunt. Pigs are brave. One pig named Priscilla saved a boy from drowning. She is in the Pet Hall of Fame.
Hogs have a total of 34-44 teeth.

Fair Food Favorites at the Sumter Fair
Corn Dogs: hot dogs dipped into a corn-based batter and deep-fried. Most corn dogs are served on sticks to make them easy to eat with one hand. The thick batter obviates the need for a bun. Varieties at carnivals and fairs may be foot-long or longer.
sugar, with added food coloring, into thin wisps; the machine operator collects the wisps onto a paper cone and presents the buyer with a seemingly huge confection that is mostly air. Watching the production of cotton candy is almost as entertaining as
dairy, often containing bananas for consistency and as a flavor base. Perceived as a healthier alternative to sweet snacks. Fried Candy Bars and Cakes: Yes, nearly anything yummy and sweet may be made even more appealing by coating it in batter and deep-frying it. Deep-fried Snickers bars are a widely enjoyed favorite, as are batter-fried Twinkies .
* The nation's first state fair was held in Syracuse, New York in September 1841.
Funnel Cakes: Originally associated with Pennsylvania but popular throughout the United States, the funnel cake is made by dripping a long stream of unleavened batter through a narrow funnel into hot oil, quickly producing a crunchy and visually impressive confection. Funnel cakes are typically served covered with powdered sugar or hot fudge. Fried Dough: Popular at fairs in various forms and under various names: Elephant Ears (also Oliphaunt Ears), Flying Saucers, Doughboys. Usually made with a yeast dough that has been allowed to partially rise; frequently covered with powdered sugar. Curly Fries: These use special cutters to cut individual potatoes, often including their peels, into long continuous strings that are fried golden brown. Cotton Candy: a popular food at fairs and seaside resorts for more than 100 years, cotton candy is made using a special machine that spins
eating it. Candy Apples: Apples covered with a hardened sugar syrup, usually served with a stick. Caramel Apples: similar to candy apples, but covered with a sticky caramel coating which may then be covered with nuts. Snow Cones: Simple cold treats created by dripping flavored syrup over shaved ice. Served in a paper cone.
Smoothies: A thick, usually fruit flavored cold beverage, often non-
* Fairs and food have always gone together. The word fair is derived from the Latin “feriae”, meaning feast. * We call it Cotton Candy these days but it was better known as Spun Sugar when it was first invented. * Elkanah Watson, called the father of agricultural fairs, gave state fairs their start. A wealthy New England farmer and businessman, he showcased his sheep under the great Elm tree in the public square in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1807.

FFA members big part of Sumter Fair The FFA program started in 1928 by vocational education students in Virginia. These young men realized that there was a need for bonding between agriculture students to allow for them to share common ideas, new technologies, and interests. Here is a brief history of your FFA organization: 1917 - The SmithHughes Vocational Education Act was passed. This act provided funding for the first agriculture classes! 1920 - Henry Groseclose and his students form the Future Farmers of Virginia club. 1928 - The first National FFA Convention was held in Kansas City, Missouri. At this time there were only 5 chartered FFA States! Leslie Applegate was elected as the first National FFA President! At this time, FFA membership was restricted by gender to males only. 1929 - The FFA colors, National Blue and Corn Gold were adopted 1930 - Mr. EM Tiffany wrote the FFA creed 1933 - The blue corduroy FFA jacket was adopted as part of the official dress uniform. 1935 - New Farmers of America, a similar organization for African-American was formed.
1965 - The New Farmers of America merged with the Future Farmers of America! 1969 - FFA opens membership to fe-
males 1976 - Julie Smiley is the first female elected as a National FFA Officer 1982 - Jan Eberly is elected the first female National FFA President 1988 - The Future Farmers of America changes it’s name to the National FFA Organization 1999 - The National FFA Convention moves from Kansas City, Missouri to Louisville, Kentucky. 2006 - The National FFA Convention moves from Louisville, Kentucky to Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1928, the Future Farmers of America brought together students, teachers and agribusiness to solidify support for agricultural education. In Kansas City’s Baltimore Hotel, 33 young farmboys charted a course for the future. They could not have foreseen how the organization would grow and thrive. Today, the National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Now, the organization is expanding the nation’s view of “traditional” agriculture and finding new ways to infuse agriculture into the classroom. The FFA motto: Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve. In 2010, there are 506,199 FFA members, aged 12-21 in 7,429 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. FFA chapters are in 11 of the 20 largest cities, including New York, Chicago and Philadelphia . The 75th National FFA Convention was host to 51,338 members, advisors and supporters.

A CUT ABOVE GOES GREEN! A Cut Above has become Bushnell's first "green" hair salon. The salon, which has been serving the area for over 10 years, kicked off the New Year by adding an organic hair-care line as an alternative to their current supply of top-of-the-line products. A Cut Above now offers Organic Color Systems; a complete line of certified organic products. The line includes natural lighteners, semi-permanent and permanent colors and perms. Aside from the benefits being eco-friendly, the products can ease the effects many suffer after long-term use of colors and perms over a number of years. They contain no ammonia, hazardous fumes, plastics, parabens or thioglycolates, and are therefore less irritating to the skin. Also, they are not manufactured with animal products and are never tested on animals. Organic Color System products stay true-to-color and they contain natural ingredients such as almond seed oil, chamomile and jojoba. A Cut Above offers a selection of Organic Color System's products for home use to help you care for and maintain your color and style. A Cut Above will continue to offer their traditional line color systems, as well. Paul Mitchell and Matrix hair colors, perms and products remain both reliable and popular. A Cut Above is a local salon with a warm, friendly environment that is lo-
cated across from Wal-Mart on West Highway 48. Owner/operator Bitsi Prevatt, stylist/colorist Shirley Ratliff and nail tech Megan Taylor are excited to start off the New Year with a new, "green" styling system which offers a viable, safe alternative to traditional colors and perms while also remaining eco-friendly. A Cut Above is a full service salon; open Tuesday through Saturday. Call 352-7934247 for appointments and/or special requests. Walk-ins welcome.

Sumter Fair & 4-H go hand in hand 4-H began as a simultaneous response to needs throughout the country, rather than as the idea of one individual. The goal of the program was to extend agricultural education to rural youth by organizing boys and girls clubs and through "learning by doing." 4-H is an informal, practical educational program for youth. It is the youth development program of Florida Cooperative Extension, a part of the University of Florida IFAS. The Florida Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development program uses a learn-by-doing approach to enable youth to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to become competent, caring, and contributing citizens of the world. This mission is accomplished by using the knowledge and resources of the land grant university system, along with the involvement of caring adults. 4-H is for all youth, wherever they live - on farms, in suburbs, in cities. 4-
H serves youth from all backgrounds and interests. It reaches both boys and girls through 4-H clubs, special-interest groups and short-term projects, school-age child care, individual & family learning & mentoring, camping, and school enrichment. Most 4-H members are from towns and cities and they participate in contemporary projects such as bicycle care and safety, consumer education, aerospace and model rocketry, public speaking, and animal sciences. 4-H offers membership without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, or handicap. 4-H club is a group of five or more youngsters guided by one or more adult volunteer leaders. A club can be any size—from a small group of kids from one neighborhood to a larger club consisting of youth from all over the county. 4-H Clubs usually concentrates on one or more projects such as gardening, woodworking, small animals, food

and nutrition, livestock, photography, etc. 4-H members build leadership by electing officers and conducting their own business meetings; work together on community service activities; meet new friends; and most important, have lots of fun. Youth, grades K-12, can be 4-H club members and enroll in many different 4-H projects. Members 8-18 may exhibit their completed work to be judged for awards. Youth, grades K-2, can be 4-H Cloverbud members. 4-H Cloverleaf is a noncompetitive learning experience. Usually, Cloverleaf members are in separate clubs where they sample a variety of 4-H projects. Older 4H members also have special opportunities, such as serving on a county-wide 4-H teen council. 4-H in Florida began in 1909 in several counties in north Florida. 4-H became an official part of the Cooperative Extension Service, along with agriculture and home economics, at about the time Cooperative Exten-
sion was officially established by the US Congress in 1914. The term “4-H Club” first appeared in a federal document in 1918, and by the mid- 1920s, 4-H was well on its way to becoming a significant national program for youth. 4-H is an American idea that has spread around the world. Throughout its long history, 4-H has constantly adapted to the ever-changing needs and interests of youth. Florida Cooperative Extension, of which 4-H is a part, receives funds from a cooperative partnership of three levels of government: Federal (via the Science and Education Administration of the US Department of Agriculture), state (via the University of Florida), and county (through the county Board of Commissioners). 4-H also receives support from private sources. Sumter Fair, a place for fun and memories When I think about the annual county fair all types of memories flood my mind from the first time I rode the ponies as a child to getting stuck on top of the Ferris wheel and wondering why did I do this. The annual Sumter County Fair will light up Bevilles Corner for nine nights of fun beginning Feb. 26. Lights, music, rides, games and visiting with old friends make the fair a fun event and a time for making memories. There are plenty of reasons to attend the Sumter Fair. There’s more to the fair than midway rides and spending too much money on games and fair food. It gives everyone an opportunity to see and appreciate the hard work that goes into making the fair a reality. There are a variety of exhibits and booths – local churches, public schools, arts and crafts, plants, animals and community projects. Several free concerts are planned along with several livestock shows and there are new additions in Old MacDonald’s Barn.
Rose Davis EDITOR
Sumter County school students, FFA and 4-H members from across the county have spent months planning for the livestock shows at the fair that include dairy, goat, steer, hog and other events. They all deserve community support. There are so many people who work hard preparing for the annual fair. Members of the Sumter Fair Association are volunteers; they give up their free time to organize the fair for the community to enjoy. They even make it easy for everyone to attend the fair at least once by having Sumter County Appreciation Day where everyone can attend the fair without paying gate
admission on Wednesday, March 3 - what more could you ask for? There’s something for everyone who takes the time to visit the fair, from the smiles on the faces of children as they take their first merry-go-round ride to watching the exhibitors win the top prize after months of hard work with their steers and hogs. There are paintings, photographs, ceramics and many more things to see. For animal lovers there are rabbits, chickens, cows, hogs and much more in the barns. I’m excited that another fair week is here and I look forward to seeing my friends and neighbors there. Please take one evening to visit our county fair; it’s a short drive for a lot of fun. In case I don’t see all of the fair board officers, directors and members who work to bring the fair to Sumter County, thank you. I’m sure Sumter folks appreciate your hard work - I know I do. See you at the fair.
