At Summit School we know that curiosity is the basic fuel of learning, and Inspiring Learning is both who we are and what we do. Through your philanthropy you support foundational learning, endless exploration, and joy in the journey–all while celebrating the fact that every child has a voice that matters. Thank you.
We are grateful for the many families who have supported Summit students, teachers, and programs this year with generous gifts designated to a variety of strategic priorities. The Seeding Possibilities Comprehensive Campaign has infused our campus with energy and excitement and brought in tremendous resources to strengthen our programs, enhance our facilities, and invest in the future of Summit School.
You’ll have an opportunity to read more in this publication about the campaign priorities and strategic initiatives, the progress on the new SEED Center, the creation of 21 newly endowed funds, the additional planned giving donors, and the success of this year’s annual fund campaign.
Your support is vital to our culture of philanthropy, where parents, grandparents, alums, faculty and staff, former parents, friends, and community members unite to help all students develop their full potential.
It has been an extraordinary year and the future is bright indeed for Summit School. We are deeply grateful for your support! Thank you.

Michael Ebeling, Head of School
Summit School thrives thanks to the steadfast dedication and generosity of our community. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I offer our sincere appreciation for your support throughout the 2024-2025 school year.
Once again, the Summit community rose to the occasion— supporting Every Eagle, Every Day through all of our vital fundraising efforts. Thanks to your generosity, we exceeded our annual fund goal for The Summit Fund, and we are well on our way to realizing the bold vision of our Seeding Possibilities Comprehensive Campaign. Your support fuels our mission and ensures that Summit continues to build strong academic foundations while nurturing curious, confident learners.

As is standard practice with most independent schools, tuition covers only part of the cost of a Summit education. The remainder is made possible through an annual draw from our endowment, co-curricular program revenue, and generous contributions to The Summit Fund and other fundraising initiatives. I’m continually inspired by the enduring generosity of the Summit community—a hallmark of our school for more than 90 years. Your continued support helps ensure a strong and sustainable future for Summit. Thank you for all the ways you invest in our school—today and for generations to come.

During the past several months, the Seeding Possibilities Campaign has infused our campus with energy and excitement. Students, teachers, families, and friends have been inspired by renderings displayed throughout the hallways of the future SEED Center—our forthcoming hub for Science, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Design.

We’ve had the opportunity to engage Summit alumni, families, and friends to share the exciting initiatives of the campaign. From hosting alumni events in cities like Washington, D.C., and Charleston, SC, to inviting families to Doughnuts and Dump Trucks —where young Eagles could view the construction site up close—we’ve created meaningful ways for our community to connect with the vision. Older students and families had the chance to experience a Virtual Reality walk-through of the new SEED Center with Design Teacher, Cam Whitley.

Demolition of the Upper School science building (originally built in 1971) began in June, creating a tangible buzz across campus as we look ahead to August 2026, when we will unveil a brand-new, state-of-the-art, 10,000-squarefoot SEED Center. This innovative space will offer students dynamic learning environments designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary learning across all divisions and grade levels.

10,620 SQ. FT. OF INNOVATIVE LEARNING SPACE

73,000 kWh $10,950 EACH YEAR SAVING ABOUT OF SOLAR POWER WILL BE GENERATED ANNUALLY—
The SEED Center will support the growth of our SEED programs and curriculum. Designed with adaptability in mind, the new Center will feature flexible classrooms and meeting spaces where students can learn, create, and engage.
It is important to note that the Seeding Possibilities Campaign is about more than just a new building. It represents a bold vision for the future of education at Summit—one rooted in innovation, collaboration, and transformative learning experiences.
The $17 million raised through the Campaign supports not only the $8 million SEED Center but also key strategic priorities, including the Center for Excellence and Innovation Endowment ($1 million), Summit’s Financial Aid Endowment ($1 million), our annual fund—The Summit Fund—and other strategic initiatives ($7 million).

The Center for Excellence and Innovation Endowment supports professional learning opportunities for our faculty and the broader educational community, positioning Summit as a leader in pedagogical innovation. By expanding access to high-quality professional development, we’re equipping our educators to thrive—and lead—in the classroom.
Through the campaign, we also aim to raise $1 million for our Financial Aid Endowment , helping ensure that Summit remains accessible to students from all backgrounds, including those in the Triad Division. At Summit, every student benefits

from a diverse and inclusive learning environment. This endowed fund strengthens our commitment to making a Summit education available to families for whom full tuition may not be feasible.
The remaining $7 million of the campaign supports The Summit Fund—our annual fund—and other strategic priorities that sustain and enhance the Summit experience. We are deeply grateful to our Summit Fund donors, whose consistent generosity bridges the gap between tuition and the true cost of a Summit education.
Through the Seeding Possibilities Campaign, we are investing in the growth and success of every student— creating a campus environment where innovation, creativity, and excellence thrive. With the visionary leadership of our Campaign Co-Chairs, Alyson and Ben Baker ’89 and Libby Whitaker Kelly ’91 and Jonathan Kelly, as well as the dedication of our Honorary and Campaign Cabinets, we are proud to share that we have reached 96% of our fundraising goal. We are deeply thankful to all who have supported this transformative effort and look forward to reaching our goal with the continued support of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends.

Patrons FOR TOMORROW
The Patrons for Tomorrow Society is an integral component of Summit School’s philanthropy program established to recognize those who include Summit School in their estate plans. Planned gifts from our Patrons support the school’s long-term strategic planning initiatives, enhanced programs, capital improvements, and help sustain Summit’s financial stability for current students and for generations of students to come.
John C. Whitaker III ’94 added Summit School to his philanthropic legacy plans and joined the Patrons for Tomorrow Society during the most recent fiscal year. In reflecting on his time at Summit, Whitaker said, “Over the years, I’ve come to better appreciate how lucky I was to start life with a Summit School education. It’s not just that Summit helped instill a lifelong love of learning; it also provided a healthy environment, with wonderful classmates (to whom I still feel close) and teachers whose kindness, dedication, and rigor impress me even more so in hindsight.
“Mr. Pettit’s geometry, Dr. Westmoreland’s Latin, and Mr. Seaver’s biology courses remain among the most enjoyable and challenging experiences of my life. I graduated from Summit, especially after those three intense years in junior high, nothing but confident and prepared.
“Few things feel as meaningful now as supporting Summit as it puts future students onto paths where they too can blossom and thrive. My father John C. Whitaker, Jr. ’52 was among Summit’s first pupils; my sister Dr. Elizabeth Whitaker Kelly ’91 also attended, and her children have had excellent experiences there, too. Summit is part of our family and always will be. And as I’ve considered my own long-term estate planning, it’s natural that Summit would play an important role.”
PLANNED GIVING ways to give
WILL OR TRUST
Make a bequest or gift through your estate by including a provision in your will or living trust. This can be in the form of cash, stock, real estate, or other assets and be designated as a percentage or fixed amount.
IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER
Transfer funds directly from your IRA to Summit. If you are a donor aged 70½ or older, gifts up to $100,000 are eligible as part of your required minimum distribution and are not included in your gross income.
BENEFICIARY
Name Summit School as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. You may designate the amount as a percentage of the assets or as a specific dollar amount.
CUSTOMIZED
Ask your trusted estate advisor about other planned giving vehicles, like a Charitable Lead Trust or Charitable Remainder Trust, that fit your philanthropic and family legacy goals.
Planned giving can help you realize important tax benefits while making a significant contribution to the school. We welcome you to join the Patrons for Tomorrow Society, ensuring Summit School remains strong for generations to come.

Faculty Support and Professional Development
Blanco Family Endowed Fund – 2024
The Blanco Family Endowed Fund, created by Kristie and Jonathan Blanco ’88, supports Summit’s CEI Endowment for the Triad Division and Orton-Gillingham Training and professional development. The endowment is dedicated to funding opportunities including continuing education, specialized training programs, workshops, and other initiatives that enhance instructional quality and foster leadership development.
Cullinan Family Endowment Fund for CEI – 2024

John E. Allen, Jr. and Gloria Allen Scholarship Endowment Fund
ESTABLISHED TO HONOR A BELOVED COACH
At Summit School, everyone is an educator. We believe that the single biggest variable in student success is the quality of the classroom teacher— or coach, in this case.
Thanks to the leadership of Lauren and Jim Dunn, parents of Kevin Dunn ’17, Summit raised more than $75,000 to establish an endowed scholarship fund for financial aid in honor of Coach John Allen and his wife, Gloria. In addition to the establishment of the scholarship, the Athletic Center basketball court, where Coach Allen has coached hundreds of girls basketball players, has been named in his honor.
Lauren and Jim shared with Summit’s Development Office many memories of time spent with John and Gloria throughout the years. “The John and Gloria Allen Scholarship is not only a celebration of an incredible coach, but of an extraordinary couple whose quiet service and deep faith have touched more lives than we’ll ever know.
“Coach Allen has been a part of our family since Kevin was in sixth grade. From the court that now bears his name, to our driveway during COVID, to the sidelines at Wake Forest—his presence has been constant, faithful, and life-changing. As parents who have coached and played, we understand how rare it is to find someone like Coach Allen—demanding yet loving, firm yet fair, always focused on making better people, not just better players. We’ve been blessed to witness that firsthand.”
Kate Quadland ’18 played for Coach Allen at Summit and shared, “It is not often that one gets the chance to be so inspired and mentored by an incredible individual at a young age. Coach Allen’s teachings go well beyond the basketball court as they are also life lessons. Coach Allen instilled a sense of confidence in me that has allowed me to become a leader in various spaces between

school and in my community. Without his guidance and teachings I truthfully would not be where I am today.”
The endowment fund will provide needbased financial aid to students who would not otherwise have access to an independent school education. This initiative is a testament to Coach Allen’s profound impact on our community and the lives of those he has guided and reflects his commitment to the holistic development of students.
True coaches don’t just teach the game— they shape lives. We are grateful to the Dunn Family and to the following donors who made a contribution to the Coach John E. Allen, Jr. and Gloria Allen Scholarship Endowment Fund:

A Lifelong Commitment to Summit
Summit School is proud to recognize C. Barbour Strickland III, Class of 1967, for his extraordinary dedication, generosity, and decades-long engagement with our community. A loyal supporter and active alum, Barbour has been a steadfast advocate for Summit, sharing both his time and resources to enrich the student experience.
Barbour makes it a priority to visit campus whenever he’s in town—often stopping by to reconnect, walk the halls, and attend reunions and Galas. His leadership as president of the Alumni Council from 2022 to 2025 helped deepen alumni engagement and strengthen connections among Summit graduates near and far.
Barbour’s lifelong passion for the arts has become a meaningful bridge between his own Summit experience and the opportunities he helps create for today’s students. When Summit received a donation of nine works of art by fellow alum Anne Kesler Shields ’47, Barbour didn’t hesitate to volunteer. He offered his expertise to frame and help install the pieces, which now hang proudly in the Arts and Technology building and in the Lower School Library.
After learning about Summit’s Arts Week— a special week when Upper School student artwork is displayed throughout campus— Barbour made a generous gift to support the event for the following year, ensuring it would continue to celebrate and spotlight student creativity.
Most recently, he made a lasting investment in the future of the arts at Summit through the creation of The C. Barbour Strickland III ’67 Endowed Fund for Visual and Performing Arts. This endowed gift supports the school’s rich Visual and Performing Arts programs and curriculum for students of all ages.
Barbour shared his reasons for giving annually:
“As a proud Summit alum, I’m grateful for the strong foundation the school gave me—academically, personally, and socially. Starting in four-year-old kindergarten and continuing through ninth grade, Summit was a place where I felt supported, challenged, and inspired. I give each year because I value the role the school played in helping shape who I am, and it feels good to give back to a place that means so much to me.”
His decision to make an endowed gift was deeply rooted in his personal connection to the arts:
“I made an endowed gift to support the visual and performing arts at Summit because those experiences really stuck with me. I still remember art classes with Ms. Moore, music with Mrs. Hopkins, and being part of school plays—they were some of the highlights of my time there. The arts became a big part of my life after Summit too. I was an art museum director, owned a custom picture frame shop, and served on the boards of numerous arts organizations. I’ve always felt that the arts are an important part of a well-rounded education, and this gift is my way of giving back to a place that helped spark that passion—and my hope that future students get to enjoy those same creative experiences.”
Whether attending reunions, offering ideas for alum programming, or supporting the arts, Barbour embodies the very best of Summit’s alum spirit. We are profoundly grateful for his leadership, generosity, and enduring belief in the power of a Summit education.

Summit School’s biennial Gala, Cultivate Our Campus In Bloom, was held on April 26, 2025 under the leadership of parent cochairs Missy Butler and Katie Woltz. A robust group of volunteers transformed the Athletic Center into a delightful spring setting and welcomed nearly 400 people for an evening to remember. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we exceeded our $350,000 fundraising goal. We are grateful for all of our sponsors, patrons, attendees, and winning bidders. It was wonderful to gather as a community to celebrate Summit’s legacy and bright future.

THE POWER OF Annual Giving
Carrie Fulton Schrum ’10
Consecutive years of giving: 10
Every year, hundreds of donors make gifts to The Summit Fund, the annual fundraising campaign that supports the school’s operating needs. These gifts— whether they are $20, $100, $500, or higher—reflect a deep belief in the power of a Summit education.
Carrie Fulton Schrum ’10 has been making an annual gift to Summit School for 10 years in a row and shared the following about why making this annual donation is important to her:
“I look back so fondly on my time at Summit. Not only did I leave the school after the 9th grade prepared to take on my upcoming educational challenges in high school, I had gained lifelong friendships, built my leadership skills and participated in all sorts of activities like musicals and sports with my peers (though neither were necessarily my strong suit!).
“My 9th grade year really stands out to me as a favorite. We had an amazing slate of teachers—Mrs. Albertson, Mrs. Welch, Mr. and Mrs. Capps, Mrs. Giljames, and Mrs. Chapman.
“Summit gave me a true meaning of self and also embedded in me the importance of giving back, and ever since I’ve been able to give it’s been important to me to pay it forward to thank Summit educators and staff for all they have given to me.
“It can feel overwhelming to make a gift when you may not have a huge amount to give, particularly for students or those entering the workforce. I encourage everyone to give—even just a little bit—because it’s not about the amount, it’s about engaging with a community and showing that you care. Plus, it feels good to give back to a place that is shaping the lives of our next generation of leaders in Winston-Salem and beyond!
“Both of my younger siblings attended Summit, as well as my aunt Betsy Fulton Saye ’84. I loved how many siblings, cousins and extended families were sprinkled across grades at Summit. My Summit friends truly are my lifelong friends—I was just married in September 2024 and Margaret Carlson ’10, Ellie Holmes Stewart ’10, and Bessie Rose Woltz ’10 were all my bridesmaids! I have already told them that we will be sending our children to Summit together one day.”
