“Everyone from the front office to the procedure chair were on point and made everything a great experience. It was my first time getting sedated and they made sure that I was comfortable and good throughout the whole thing.”
Sedation in dentistry is a technique used to help patients relax and feel calm during dental procedures. It involves administering sedative medications to ease anxiety, reduce discomfort, and make the entire experience more pleasant. There are various forms of sedation, ranging from mild (conscious) sedation to deep sedation. Many patients report having no memory of the dental procedure, creating the best dental appointment they never remember! Our goal with sedation is to ensure that you receive the care you need without fear, stress, or discomfort, making your visit as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Reduces Anxiety and Fear: Many people experience anxiety or fear when visiting the dentist. Sedation helps alleviate these feelings, allowing you to undergo dental treatments without stress or discomfort.
Minimizes Discomfort: Sedation can significantly reduce the discomfort associated with dental procedures This is particularly beneficial for patients with a low pain threshold or sensitive teeth
Enables Multiple Procedures: With sedation, dentists can perform multiple procedures in a single visit, saving you time and reducing the need for multiple appointments
Improves Cooperation: Sedation can be especially helpful for some children or individuals with special needs who may have difficulty sitting still during dental treatments
Enhanced Comfort for Long Procedures: For lengthy or complex dental procedures, sedation ensures that you remain comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire treatment
Prevents Gag Reflex: Sedation helps control the gag reflex, which can be triggered during dental procedures, ensuring a smoother and more efficient treatment process
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A mild form of sedation inhaled through a mask. It helps you relax while remaining awake and responsive.
Oral Sedation: Involves taking a pill before and during the procedure. The level of sedation can range from mild to moderate, making you feel drowsy but still conscious.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation: Administered through a vein, it works quickly and provides a deeper level of sedation.
By choosing sedation, you can transform your dental visit into a more pleasant and stress-free experience, ensuring you receive the care you need without the associated anxiety or discomfort.
Preparation: Minimal preparation needed; you can eat lightly before the appointment.
Administration: A small mask is placed over your nose to inhale the gas.
Effects: You’ll feel relaxed and may experience a light, euphoric sensation.
Awareness: You remain fully conscious and can respond to the dentist’s instructions.
Recovery: The effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed, allowing you to drive home and resume normal activities shortly after the appointment.
Preparation: You may need to fast for a few hours before taking the medication.
Administration: You’ll take a prescribed pill about an hour before the procedure.
Effects: You’ll feel drowsy and relaxed, with some patients feeling slightly groggy.
Awareness: You remain awake but may have a limited memory of the procedure. A two hour appointment may feel like 15 minutes!
Recovery: You’ll need someone to drive you home as the sedative effects can last for a few hours. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day.
Preparation: Follow specific instructions from your dentist, which may include fasting.
Administration: A sedative is administered through an IV line in your arm or hand.
Effects: You’ll feel the effects almost immediately, becoming deeply relaxed.
Awareness: You remain semi-conscious but may not remember much if any of the procedure.
Recovery: You’ll need a ride home and should rest for the day, as the sedative effects can take some time to fully wear off.
