Christian Char acter Awards Announced Summit Christian Academy (SCA) is pleased to recognize students who consistently exhibit exceptional Christian character through the Christian Character Award program. The purpose of this award is to encourage students to pursue their potential toward attaining the highest level of personal and academic development, as well as Christian character. The achievement of Christian Character at SCA is one of the most prestigious recognitions within the school. Elementary Christian Character recipients for the second quarter are second grade student George Hupp, son of George and Jessica Hupp, and fourth grade student Faith Holt, daughter of Ryan and Heather Holt. Junior high students Abigail Gleason, daughter of Dustin and Natasha Gleason, and Ryan Sare, son of Scott and Rachael Sare, received the Christian Character Award for first semester. Winners of the first semester Christian Character Award for High School were senior Kasey Newsome, daughter of Christian and Danielle Newsome, and senior Brennan Ferguson, son of Brandon and Chantele Ferguson.

Message from SCA Head of School
A
s I shared with the SCA community in late March, Academic Dean Dr. Kimberlee Gill will be stepping down from her SCA role Chris Hahn at the end of May. She will be using her gifts and talents as Chief Academic Officer at Resurrection Christian School in Loveland, Colorado. Dr. Gill has served as a leader at SCA since 2004. During her tenure, she led the elementary school as principal, and briefly as preschool director, before being named Academic Dean in 2015. Many of the programs that are foundational to the SCA experience were introduced, developed, enhanced, and expanded under her leadership. Examples include the curriculum review/adoption process, all subject area philosophies and curriculum maps, and gifted programming. She forged partnerships with Summit Technology Academy, off-campus fitness facilities, speech and occupational therapy providers, resource support from the Lee’s Summit School District, the Watch
D.O.G.S. program, and the internship programs. Her school cultural enrichment programs included things such as 6th grade celebration, DEAR Day, elementary academic competitions, Virtuosity!, Writers’ and Math Corners, Switch it Up Day, and the elementary talent show. She was responsible for development of the Devoted Parent editing and publishing, 1st-12th entrance testing, the crisis manual and 3-year first responder conference, development of the Health Clinic, and greatly expanded resource services. Under her guidance and design, SCA launched eCampus and online learning, SCA one-toone technology initiative and Smart Board integration, school career counseling and the procedures for academic advising, legislative and advocacy leadership at the state and federal level, broad expansion of dual credit courses, summer and AP courses, learning commons academic support, and many other things as well. In my 32 years of Christian school ministry, Dr. Gill is one of the most professional, passionate, and gifted servant-leaders I have worked with. Her legacy of leadership is large and will be missed.
Dr. Gill shared with the Board of Education, “It has been the joy of my heart to serve the students and families of SCA over the past 17 Dr. Kimberlee Gill years. May God continue to direct and accomplish His perfect plans through you all. I am wholly confident in God’s provision for SCA’s future.” Please join me in giving thanks for Dr. Gill and her ministry among us. Join me in praying for her as she completes her time with us and prepares for what God has in store for her and her extended family in Colorado. Please know that I am still very open to hearing your SCA story, your experiences, and your hopes for our future. We are in the homestretch of completing the 202122 school year! First Gr ade Students Compete in Goody, Goody Gumball Competition First grade students were challenged in their annual “Goody, Goody, Gumball” reading competition, prompting students to get excited about reading. They received a gumball sticker for every 30 minutes they read. Together, the 68 first grade students read a total of 18,705 minutes. The top two winners from each class received a gift certificate to KD’s Books in downtown Lee’s Summit and gumballs. Elementary Yearbook Students Visit H&H Color Lab One of the SCA Core Values is Igniting Leadership. We work to provide a culture of servant leadership that is sparked by a sense of individual purpose. With competency, credibility, and compassion, we add value to others and influence the marketplace of ideas. The Elementary Yearbook Team visited H&H Color Lab to learn about the yearbook and photography process. What a fun, experiential learning opportunity for these students!
Jr. High Student Council Attends the Mayor’s Char acter Breakfast
SCA Jr. High Student Council students were invited to the 2022 Mayor’s Character Breakfast “Building Your Field of Dreams.” The event featured a presentation of character awards to community members, and keynote speaker Joel Goldberg (TV broadcaster of the KC Royals). Goldberg spoke about how pressure can challenge us to grow,
and asked all participants how they can invest more in their communities. “This event was a great opportunity for students to see local community members getting recognized for their character (generosity, responsibility, cooperation, citizenship, integrity, appreciation, respect, perseverance, compassion, kindness, family, and
leadership). I hope that the students enjoyed the event and I am proud of how they represented themselves and the school. I look forward to seeking out new ways for us as a student council to invest in our community at SCA,” shared SCA Jr. High Student Council sponsor Kelly Montgomery.

Athletics Tr ansition from Winter to Spring by Lance Quessenberry Athletic Director As we transition from the winter to the spring sports season, I want to look back at our winter season and the blessing God provided. First, Coach Lee and the Girls Swim team had an outstanding year which produced their first event to be considered for the state meet. These ladies keep competing and get better each year. We can’t wait to see what they do next year. Next, our Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams were in similar situations with new coaches and learning new systems as they built a solid groundwork for the future. Both teams had up and down seasons, but the foundations for both were set in place. It is going to be fun to see their growth in years to come. The Varsity Wrestling team continued
their growth, not only in numbers, but also competition level. They had great accomplishments as a team and individually, with the most notable one being Jeramiah Smith. Jeramiah finished 4th in the Class 1 State Tournament at the 160lb level. We look forward to the continued growth of this program and how God uses Coach Thomas and his athletes. Lastly, the Cheer and Dance teams both did outstanding jobs as they continue to improve each year. Coach Ray and the Cheer team seem to get better each week as they set the tone for the atmosphere of each game. Coach Pace did an outstanding job with the Dance Team in her first year and we look forward to their continued growth and improvement. Before we wrap up the winter sports, I want to say a special thank you to all
the seniors for the winter sports. It has been a pleasure to watch you the past four years. You made an impact Lance Quessenberry competitively, but more importantly, you made an impact spiritually. You made huge positive contributions to each of your respective programs, and we are forever grateful. Spring sports started on March 21st, and the competitions for our Varsity Baseball, Boys Golf, Girls Soccer, and Track and Field teams promise to be exciting. Check out the athletics calendar on the school website and make plans to see our spring athletes complete. Thanks to all of you for your support!

Varsity Wrestling Returns to State Tournament

by Greg Thomas, Head Coach Junior Jeramiah Smith highlighted the wrestling season as he won the district championship for the 160lb weight class and then went on to place 4th in the Class 1 State Championships. Smith led the team in most categories throughout the season including a new school record of 181 takedowns to go along with his 42-8 record. Other key members of the team were juniors Memphis Hinton (132lb), Dalton McBroom (195lb), Grant Self (145lb), and freshman Gabe Harris (138lb). All young men had good seasons and will help SCA to become a top-level program very soon. The team needs a few more mentally, physically, and spiritually tough athletes to raise the bar!
Baseball Promises an Exciting Season by John Gage, Head Coach Varsity Baseball is excited for the upcoming season and the chance to defend their conference, district, and sectional championships from last year. They return seven starters and have eight seniors returning for their final high school season. The seniors include two All-State players in Garrett Ferguson (Missouri State commit) and Morgan Wilkins (Dordt University commit) along with Eli Guffey, Nate Bartlett (Truman State commit), Mason Holt, Sean Garrison, Hudson Harris, and Josh Freed. Other returning starters are sophomores Fischer Ethridge and Xander Zumwalt with newcomer Isaac Truesdale rounding out the rest of the starting lineup. The Eagles return to Kauffman Stadium this season where they look forward to playing St. Varsity Baseball placed 1st in the Marshall Invitational on April 1-2. James Academy on April 25. The team is selling Royals vouchers to earn the privilege of playing at “The K.” Tickets are available in the View Level, Outfield Plaza, Field Plaza, and Field Box seating. They can be purchased at the front desk of the secondary, from a baseball player or coach, and online at the QR Code.

Varsity Dance Team Holds Mini Dance Camp
Girls in grades K-6 participated in a Mini Dance Camp led by the Varsity Dance Team.

Varsity Dance held their annual Mini Dance Camp fundraiser for girls in kindergarten through 6th grade this past February. Participants in the camp played fun games and learned a dance routine, which they performed during halftime at the Varsity Girls’ basketball game against Van Horn the following week. Girls in K-2nd performed together and 3rd-6th grade girls performed with the high school dance team. Then they all came together for a grand finale! The camp gives members of the dance team the opportunity for leadership and fellowship while interacting with younger students. “It was amazing to teach and perform with many of SCA’s young dancers! The whole dance team felt proud to watch them master the camp dance and perform it at the high school game with confidence,” said Junior Dance Team Member Lydia Conner. The Varsity Dance Team performs during fall and winter sports seasons. Tryouts for the 202223 school year will be held in April.

Fifth Gr ade Students Perform in Annual Musical A long-standing tradition at SCA is the 5th grade musical. Students have the opportunity each year to try out for the production and perform on the stage through singing, dancing and acting. This year, fifth grade students performed Danny & The Shacks. This biblical production recounts the adventures of Daniel (Danny, as he is called in the 21stcentury version of the story) and his bandmates, The Shacks (better known to Bible scholars out there as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego). The crew embark on a roller-coaster-thrill-ride of experiences as they encounter King Neb, his golden statue, some crazy Babylonians, the fiery furnace, and of course, the infamous lions’ den. Through it all, the powerful truth of God’s Word and the importance of being obedient and faithful to His teaching comes through loud and clear in a storyline so fantastic and faith affirming, it could only come from the Word of God. What a wonderful tradition to carry on at SCA as we continue to fulfill our mission to inspire students to achieve their God-given potential.
Elementary Talent Show Lets Students Shine on Stage Two Core Values at Summit Christian Academy are Igniting Leadership & Cultivating Community! Both of these values are critical to the mission of SCA- to inspire students to achieve their God given potential! One way we do this is through the Elementary Talent Show. Students have the opportunity to lead and share their talents on the stage of SCA through song, performance, musical instruments, dance, theatre, movement, gymnastics and many other ways of showing their God given abilities. As part of the elementary talent show, the students learn the importance of cultivating community. Through the collection of Mommy Bags at the talent show, students will be donating these items to Resource Health (formally Rachel House). These items will be blessing new moms who chose life for their babies! We are so thankful for the opportunity to continue sharing God’s light at SCA through the incredible partnership with students and L-R: Members of elementary STUCO Jasmine Stringfellow, Abbie families! Instrumental Musician Luke Fleming Earns All-District Orchestr a Senior Luke Fleming auditioned and was selected to the All-District string orchestra. District orchestra is not divided by school size, and SCA auditions in a very competitive district. The district orchestra performance in January was conducted by Dr. John Rutland from the University of Central Missouri.

Vocal Musician Hudson Harris Earns All-State Recognition & Performs at Missouri Music Educators Association Conference
S
enior Hudson Harris has been named to the Missouri All-State Choir for the 2021-22 school year. Each school in the Kansas City Metropolitan District is eligible to select 32 students to be part of the KC Metro All-District Choirs. For 2021-22, 463 students auditioned. Auditions included the performance of a solo and sight reading. The top 150 scores comprise the KC Metro All-District SATB Choir. From those 150 students, all juniors and seniors were allowed to audition to be in the Missouri All-State Choir. The highest 32 scores from the 150 were selected to be part of the Kansas City Metro All-State Choir. These 32 students recently joined Missouri District qualifiers and performed at the annual Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) Conference held at Senior Hudson joined Missouri District qualifiers to perform at the annual Missouri Music Educators Margaritaville Resort (formerly Tan-Tar-A Resort). SCA Student Artist Selected as Missouri Senate District 8 Winner Sophomore Jisue Kim has been selected as the Missouri Senate District 8 Art Contest winner. Her artwork was selected by Senator Mike Cierpiot to represent District 8 in the Missouri Senate Hall Student Art Exhibit. A copy of her artwork will hang in the Senate hallway gallery from March 2022 through February 2023. Look for Jisue’s original winning artwork on display by the Summit Christian Academy Administrative Conference Room. “It is such a blessing that Jisue's incredible talent is being recognized and representing Missouri Senate District 8,” shared Secondary Art Teacher Ms. Jana Jurkovich. Sophomore Jisue Kim’s District 8 contest winning artwork will hang in the Senate gallery through February 2023.

International
Students Tr avel the World at International Experience Event SCA’s annual International Experience was full of activity as students moved through the rooms getting their passports stamped along the way. Mrs. Moyer’s French students created a Parisian café atmosphere and students enjoyed café au lait and croquet monsieur. They also sampled snacks from French-speaking places around the world like France, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, and Louisiana! Students created Mardi Gras masks and “laissezles bons temps rouler.” Students traveled to Spanish-speaking countries and experienced the crafts and history of Dia de los Muertos as they warmed up with mexican hot chocolate and tres leches cake. Other food to sample included churros, horchata, flan, beans and rice, and empanadas. Before students could enjoy the food, they had
to participate in a game with traditional toys and discover what makes the food of Spanish-speaking countries unique. Adventures in China awaited and students learned how to make their own dumpling and participate in a Chinese tea ceremony. World Language Chinese I students led participants in various Chinese games and taught them how to make origami and play Chinese chess. In order to get into the authentic Chinese restaurant created by Chinese II students, you had to first show your passport and work your way through the underground church experience put on by Chinese III students. One student commented on this impactful experience. “I did not realize how little of the Bible is available to those in the underground church. It’s crazy to
think that some of the Scripture they have has been reproduced solely from memory. I learned the story of one family who had a single page of the Bible and passed it around, caring for it like it was the most precious thing they had. Yet here we are with multiple complete copies of the Bible, and still many Christians do not appreciate it.” From a student working in the underground church experience, “I heard multiple times how surprised people were that being an underground Christian was so difficult. The code activity and the verse memorization, especially, make people stop and think about how much they knew about the Bible and how far they would be willing to go to continue practicing their faith.”

SCA Set to Welcome New International Students for the 2022-23 School Year SCA is excited to welcome new international students for the 2022-23 school year. With the world opening up again, international students are applying to SCA and American Buddies are being matched to welcome these students. One SCA Buddy shared, “I think the Buddy Program is awesome because it allows people who have never been out of the U.S. to build friendships with people from other countries. As buddies, it is important that we help international students make the transition as easy as possible. This program helps us all realize how similar people really are.”

four students from South Korea, one from Switzerland, and three from China. They’re all part of the family and we love it when they come ‘home’ to visit.” The SCA International Program was recently featured in an international newsletter published by iTEP, International Test of English Proficiency. After publication, a large exchange program organization in Vietnam reached out to SCA about a partnership. Recruiting materials have been created and sent around the globe. “And now we pray and ask God to bring the students He wants to attend SCA,” shared International Program Director Kathy Tharp.

SOAR Student Diversity Committee Hosts Connection Event One of the Core Values of SCA is Cultivating Community. We recognize that the SCA community extends beyond the walls of our school. Coming from diverse backgrounds, we unify around a simple statement of faith that binds us together. We acknowledge the responsibility of the parent, the role of the church, and the authority of the Holy Spirit in training students. SOAR Student Diversity Committee recently hosted NEXUS—a student connection event. Around the table, students shared the meaning of their name, if it had any ethnic origins, who gave them their name and if they had a nickname. Students then had a cookie decorating contest, judged be Head of School Chris Hahn and Eli Burns, SOAR Secretary. “If you look at your cookie and compare it to those around you, you’ll probably notice that they all look very different from each other,” shared SOAR President Brennan Ferguson. “Everyone’s decorated cookie is unique to its creator. As we enjoy our cookies together, let’s not forget how they remind us
of our unique differences and the value that we have in who God made us. We can always take comfort in the fact that we are made in the image of God, created for good works and are one in the body of Christ. These biblical truths have no impact if we do not apply them. Therefore, our mission here at SOAR is to promote diversity through biblical truths. These specific truths are especially helpful for facilitating healthy conversations about diversity.” Students then reflected on personal goals for this semester and how to make SCA a better school. What a wonderful way to learn about cultivating community and unity within the school!

CA will honor donors with gift commitments of $10,000 or more to the Tradition of Faith Capital Campaign for the new Fieldhouse & Activity Center in the same unique way as the previous two SCA capital fundraising campaigns. Bricks embedded in the floor of the secondary building entry will include these new donor messages. The engraving is designed entirely by each donor. It could be the donor’s name, favorite Scripture, family members, or a combination. Or it could be another message entirely. There are three sizes of bricks, corresponding to gift sizes of $10,000+,
$25,000+, and $50,000 or more. Bricks will be reserved based on a pledged gift commitment of up to three years. SCA will commence with the brick engravings when at least half of the gift commitment is received by the school. The initial engraving for this new campaign is anticipated during the summer of 2022. Gifts from the Tradition of Faith capital campaign are designated to cover construction costs of the new Fieldhouse & Activity Center currently under construction on the west side of the SCA campus. If you want SCA to honor your gift
commitment in this way, simply make a gift to SCA of at least $10,000 to the Tradition of Faith Campaign. If you have already made a Cordell Dick gift that qualifies for Director of Major Gifts a special message, SCA will be in contact with you to request your message.
