SCA Announces Chris Hahn as Next Head of School The SCA Board of Education is excited to announce that Chris Hahn will become the next Head of School, effective July 1, 2021.

Mr. Hahn was selected from an extensive pool of diverse and talented candidates after a thorough six-month search process that engaged SCA parents, alumni, staff, faculty, and the SCA board of education.

“At every step in the process, we were inspired

by Chris’s commitment to Christ first and foremost, his demonstrated love of learning and children, his relational approach to leadership, warmth, vision, and most importantly, his deep alignment with our mission and core

values,” shared SCA Board President Don Bisbee.

“SCA is at a unique point in our growth. After a year of almost full capacity at all grade levels, SCA is on course for another record-setting 2021-22 school year,” continued Bisbee.

“SCA is supported by a strong community of creative and engaged students, committed parents, and inspiring teachers who are called to serve at SCA. We feel that Chris is who the Lord desired and provided to SCA! He is an effective communicator, collaborator, has a high energy level, and a passion for the education of children. Chris & Tricia Hahn have adult children, a daughter, Whitney, who is a second grade teacher in Abilene, Texas; a son, Tyler, who is graduating in May from Texas A&M; and a son, Brent, who is a freshman at Grand Canyon University.

The SCA Board of Education is excited to announce that Chris Hahn will become the next Head of School, effective July 1, 2021.

Mr. Hahn will join SCA from Prince of Peace Christian School, a pre-K-12th grade school in Carrollton, Texas, where he has served since 1990. He began his career at Prince of Peace as a teacher, coach, and athletic director. He eventually served as principal and administrator, and then as Headmaster since 2003.

At Prince of Peace, he played an integral role in all aspects of school life: from hiring and mentoring new teachers and staff to implementing the school’s strategic plan. He has worked closely with the Prince continued on p. 3

Stewards Holds Seder Celebr ation as Part of Tabernacle Unit Passover is one of the most widely observed holidays, and some families have traditions that have been passed down for generations. The core of Passover is telling the story of the Exodus from Egypt. The seder is a festive meal that can be at the center of any Passover experience shared with family and friends.

Students in the STEWARDS class enjoyed a seder celebration, led by Lone Jack Baptist Church Pastor Jerry Tharp and SCA Dad Jimmy Woodall.

They shared a beautiful experience as they saw Jesus demonstrated in the Passover story! Students recalled the bittersweet story of the Israelites in STEWARDS students participate in a seder meal during their Tabernacle unit. slavery in Egypt, with a New Testament peek into the deliverance that God offers all of us through Jesus. The students also enjoyed the seder festival dinner.

“It truly was special,” shared STEWARDS Teacher Mrs. Epema, “I pray it will leave an indelible mark on the heart of the students who are in this program.”

STEWARDS is an SCA program for students who demonstrate academic giftedness to the extent that continued educational growth and stimulation can best be served in an environment beyond typical grade-level curriculum.

Message from your Head of School Celebrating Easter is a great reminder of why Christian education Linda Harrelson matters. What Jesus did on the cross and the hope of the resurrection is the most important truth we can teach our students. Helping them live their lives in light of that hope is where our teachers and coaches shine.

They are disciplers. The SCA faculty come alongside our parents and their churches to train, mentor, and grow followers of Christ. Parents, you couldn’t ask for a better partner to help fulfill the command in

Deuteronomy 6 to teach and train your children.

This is why I get excited each spring when new families begin enrolling at SCA. These new families are gaining a partner. And we have the opportunity to disciple and impact more children for Christ. I am so thankful for the impact on my family as I know you are on yours.

I pray that our new families quickly feel the partnership and difference that SCA brings.

Obviously, this will be the last spring for me, so it is particularly special. As I prepare to pass the baton to the next Head of School, Mr. Chris Hahn, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the Head of

School Search Committee for their hard work over the last few months.

The committee was comprised of the SCA Board of Education, faculty, alumni, and parents from our school community. Under the leadership of Board Member John Kliewer, they spent months systematically working through many candidates. Through this process, the Lord revealed the next leader for our school.

Thank you for answering the call to pray for the Search Committee and the process. I ask for your continued prayers as I work with Board President, Don Bisbee, and Mr. Hahn to assure a smooth transition of leadership.

Christian Char acter Award Recipients Announced SCA is pleased to recognize students who consistently exhibit exceptional Christian character through the Christian Character Award program. The purpose of this award is to encourage students to pursue their potential toward attaining the highest level of personal and academic development as well as Christian character. The achievement of SCA’s Christian Character Award is one of the most prestigious recognitions within the school.

The elementary school’s Christian Character Award recipients for the second quarter are second grade student SueAnna Wright and fifth grade student Gregory Breshears. The students were recognized in a virtual ceremony.

The Junior High Christian Character Award recipients for first semester were 8th grade students Emma Coats and Elijah Davis.

Mr. Hahn has a BA in Elementary Education from Concordia University, and a Master of Arts in Education Administration from the University of North Texas.

SCA Students Receive National Speech and Debate Association Academic All-American Designation SCA is pleased to announce that five speech and debate students have been awarded the designation of National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA)’s Academic All-American award. This award is given to the top 2% of speech and debate students in the nation. This is the largest number of students to receive this recognition in a single year from SCA. Students receiving the award are seniors Austin Wilson and Ryan Wagy, and juniors Zachary Akeson, Kandace Gill, and Kaitlyn Gregg. This is Austin Wilson’s second year to receive the award, making him SCA’s first two-time AAA. Speech & Debate Goals Set...Goals Achieved!

The first goal for speech and debate was that no one compete at a tournament without winning at least one of the four preliminary rounds they would debate.

This proved not to be a problem for the nine debaters on the team. Not only did they accomplish this goal, but the team won 166 rounds at a pace of two of every three rounds they debated. This resulted in sixteen trips into elimination rounds and seven first place finishes. Juniors Zachary Akeson and Kaitlyn Gregg were first in Public Forum Debate twice.

Junior Kandace Gill took first twice in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Senior Maycee Nicholson also had a first place finish in Lincoln-Douglas. In Policy Debate, Seniors Ryan Wagy with Austin Wilson had two first place finishes.

The debaters also were successful in their individual speech events. Junior Zachary Akeson led the way as he competed in the finals 12 times for his two events, Oration and International Extemporaneous Speaking. In those rounds, he finished in the top three eight times, and first place five times. But Zach was not alone. Other team members

made finals 17 times, with five of those resulting in top three finishes.

Unlike most other activities and sports, speech and debate competes against all classifications. The members of the team expect to square off against the likes of Rockhurst, Pembroke Hill, Lee’s Summit West, Lee’s Summit North, Blue Springs, Grain Valley, and others at tournaments that could have 30 plus schools participating.

Not all members of the team compete together at every tournament because of involvement in other functions and state participation limits but, when they were able to assemble as many as possible, another goal was to finish in the top ten in the team sweepstakes. Another goal met! Twice, even while being the smallest school competing at the tournament, SCA finished not only in the top ten, but in the top five. In January, the team set a school record at the Smithville Tournament for their highest finish in an open classification tournament by coming in second place, behind only Liberty HS in the 26 school field. In February, the Eagles were fourth of the 39 schools at

the Neosho Classic.

Another goal was to qualify members of the team to state and nationals. This would again mean competing against schools larger than SCA since neither MSHSAA or the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) divide schools by classification.

Another goal met! At the state qualifying tournament, SCA saw Zachary Akeson make finals in International Extemporaneous Speaking, and Maycee Nicholson in the final round of Original Oration. Advancing to the State Tournament in April are Ryan Wagy in Radio Speaking, and Maycee Nicholson in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. The National Speech and Debate Tournament, the world’s largest academic competition, will once again include members of the SCA team as Ryan Wagy with Austin Wilson took first place, while going undefeated, in Policy Debate at the Show-Me District Tournament. Joining them will be Zachary Akeson, who finished first in International Extemporaneous Speaking. These three may be joined by other members of the (continued on p. 5)

Goals Set...Goals Achieved! (continued from p.4) team as there is one more qualifying tournament set for April.

Three years ago, when Coach Mark Harris took over the program, a goal was set that each graduating senior be awarded the NSDA honor of Academic All-American. Students become eligible after completing five semesters and by meeting the standards set for grades, ACT score, and points earned through their speech and debate results.

Five outstanding students have earned the distinction this year, with a sixth to be awarded in April. Austin Wilson leads the way, earning the award for the second time. He is joined by Ryan Wagy, Zachary Akeson, Kandace Gill, and Kaitlyn Gregg.

Joining them in April will be Maycee Nicholson. The All-American Award places these students in the top 1% of all

speech and debate students in the nation.

These students are the six that were eligible this year…goal met!

Finally, Coach Mark Harris was notified in March by the NSDA that he would be receiving a national coaching award; his eighth diamond. Coaches are given diamond awards based on years of service and results achieved by their students. In his 40 years of teaching and coaching, Coach Harris’ students have advanced to 39 national tournaments. Twelve of his students have been in final rounds at nationals, including a national champion in 2002. Also in 2002, his team won the Stennis National School Championship and the NSDA School of Excellence award. He has also coached students to 38 state tournaments

is three states, with state champions in every speech and debate event. Since the NSDA’s founding in 1925, only 15 coaches have reached the level of 8th diamond.

Based on the points earned during his years of service, he presently ranks 8th on the all time list. Because he holds high expectations for his students, and has worked to help them achieve their goals, he will be honored in June at the National Tournament.

And so as the year winds down, the Eagle Speech and Debate Squad looks to finish as it is written in Philippians 3: 13-14…”Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it on my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

International Students Kick Off New Unit at the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art In English for Academic Purposes (EAP), international students visited the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to kick off their new unit of cultural exploration of identity through inductive investigation of art. Students learned how God gives us an identity through Jesus, and reflected on what we would want others to see if they investigated us the way we scrutinize art. The experience brought about new vocabulary words and high-level thinking opportunities, and prepared the students to showcase their own art project at the SCA International Experience.

Junior to Compete in Rotary Speech Contest

Junior Zach Akeson won first place in the SCA competition of the Rotary Four-Way Speech Contest.

Zach will compete on March 25 against the winners of each of the Lee’s Summit Public Schools.

Junior Kaitlyn Gregg earned second place and freshman Karinton Newton earned third place.

Did Someone Say Pie? While PIE is ALWAYS a good idea, some of our secondary geometry and algebra students celebrated with PIE (YUMMY) for a belated Pi Day. Families contributed pies to be eaten during class and students learned many amazing facts about the number Pi and its history. While many of our students are really gifted at enjoying and eating PIE, many are also gifted with reciting the digits in Pi. Yearbook Club Visits H&H Color Lab

Elementary Yearbook Club students had the opportunity to tour the H&H Color Lab where the school’s yearbooks are produced. L-R: Sixth grade students Abbey Rapley, Camryn Meyer, Lucas Brownlee, Matthew Brownlee, Elena Michaels, and Isabelle Thompson.

The SCA Elementary Yearbook Club students recently had the opportunity to visit H&H Color Lab in Raytown, MO. The sixth grade students had the opportunity to experience firsthand how their hard work creating the elementary school yearbook transforms from computer software into a physical book.

H&H Color Lab has been in business for 50 years and produces all of SCA’s school photos, sports photos, and yearbooks, as well as custom photographs and keepsakes for professional photographers and clients all over the world including the Kansas City Chiefs. Coowner Amy Drum provided the students with a tour of the facility that included the printing machines, specialized equipment for stapling and fusing spines, shipment center, and computers. Students received education on the printing and production processes and had the opportunity to meet several H&H craftsmen and ask questions about how images transfer to different materials.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for students to talk with professionals and see how their projects can be used in the real world,” said SCA Elementary Art Teacher and Yearbook Club Director Suzanne Turner.

A Look Back Brings Thanks

by Lance Quessenberry, Athletic Director Thankful is the word that comes to mind when I think about the 2020-21 winter sports season. It could have gone many different directions, but, in the end, all our teams were blessed to complete their seasons with a minimal number of canceled competitions. Many schools had to cancel entire seasons or quarantine entire teams for multiple weeks. We were fortunate enough to only have a couple individual cases. We are thankful for this as it allowed our athletes, coaches, and families to experience and create lifelong memories.

Junior High sports had a strong season as they were able to compete in most of their competitions. The Wrestling team did very well in their meets. The Girls’ Basketball “A” team finished 2nd in the Crossroads Conference while the Boys’ Basketball “A” team finished 1st in the

Crossroads Conference and completed a perfect 13-0 season.

Girls’ Swim finished their second season in the program’s young history by competing in 12 of their 13 scheduled events. Even though they fell short in producing the program’s first state qualifier, they were very competitive in all their meets and have shown that the Girls’ Swim program is on the rise.

Wrestling was very blessed in their schedule as well. They were able to compete in 15 of their 16 scheduled meets. The program had a young group this year with a new coaching staff.

However, the team still produced multiple individual conference champions and the entire team qualified for sectionals. Even though they did not have a state qualifier, they had multiple wrestlers who just missed the opportunity. We look forward to those wrestlers returning and taking

Girls’ Basketball was probably hit Lance Quessenberry the hardest by cancelations due to COVID-19. Even though no one on our team was affected, opponents had to cancel six games. The team was still able to play 20 games and finished the season with a 7-13 record.

With no seniors and only three juniors, the team was young, but they received a ton of excellent experience that will only help the program going forward.

Lastly, Boys’ Basketball made up all but two of their cancelations and had one of the greatest seasons in the program’s history. They won all three regular season tournaments in which they competed, won the Crossroads Conference championship, and finished 3rd in the MSHSAA Class 3 State Tournament.

This finish tied them with the 200809 team who also placed 3rd in state.

Their 22-5 record included some great experiences for the team and gave our SCA community many great memories they will never forget.

Again, we are thankful God gave our teams these opportunities this winter.

They represented SCA and Christ well throughout the season, and we can’t wait to do it again next year. Thank you to all who made sacrifices to make everything happen for our teams. Our SCA community is amazing!

Varsity Baseball to Compete at Kauffman Stadium Varsity Baseball kicked off their season in a strong way by going 4-0 in the Raytown Tournament to win the championship. They defeated Raytown South, Harrisonville, Truman, and Oak Grove to claim the 1st place title.

The Varsity team will once again compete at Kauffman Stadium on April 27 when they will take on Battle High School. Admission will be free for this game and all SCA fans are encouraged to attend!

Live Performances February 26 was a momentous night for the elementary music department. We had our first live musical event since last school year! It was such a thrill to welcome a limited number of guests into the commons for the annual “5th Grade Performances.”

Each class performed a theatrical piece-either a reader’s theatre or a play-and a song they sang and performed on Orff instruments. Both pieces were tied together by a biblical theme.

Mrs. Bacon’s class performed “Ungrateful,” a play about remembering to thank God for all the blessings He bestows 5th Graders "play" (left to right, front to back) soprano xylophone, alto upon us. xylophones, egg shakers, and triangles along with a piece arranged for Orff Mrs. Hurley’s class performed “Tell the World,” a play that instruments. The remainder of the class sings with the instrumentarium reminded us that our excuses are not valid in the eyes of God. then switch places so all have an opportunity to explore both.

He wants and needs us to share the Gospel. We just have to take that first step and go!

We were in stitches after laughing with Mrs. Kates’ class as they comically presented “We Don’t Have a Clip,” a play reminding us that God sometimes works in mysterious ways and sometimes in ways that literally make us laugh!

“Use it or Lose It,” a reader’s theatre presented by Mrs. Lucht’s class somberly, yet sometimes sarcastically, reminded us that if we don’t use the gifts and talents God gives us, we may very well lose them.

The energy of the crowd interacting with the students was palpable and the Holy Spirit was moving! We heard many “Amens” as the students proclaimed God’s truth.

Sophomore Wins Missouri Senate District 8 Art Contest for Second Consecutive Year SCA Sophomore Yuna (Alyn) Shin was selected as the Missouri Senate District 8 Art Contest winner for the second year in a row by Senator Mike Cierpiot. She will represent District 8 in the Missouri Senate Hall Student Art Exhibit.

Each school in the contest was able to submit 10 pieces of art to be judged. Senator Cierpiot reviewed the SCA Sophomore submissions from schools in Missouri Yuna (Alyn) Shin is Senate District 8 and selected one the winner of the work to represent our district. There Missouri Senate District 8 Art will be a photograph of the artwork Contest. hung in the Senate Hallway at the Capitol among the other selected artworks from all of the Senate Districts in the state.

SCA Vocal Musician Earns All-State Recognition Junior Hudson Harris has been named to the Missouri All-State Choir for the 2020-21 school year. Hudson auditioned and is one of only six tenors from the KC Metro area to achieve this honor. He joins other tenors from similar districts across the state of Missouri, as well as qualifying sopranos, altos and basses as members of the Missouri All-State Choir for the 2020-21 school year.

“I am so proud of Hudson for this huge accomplishment,” shared Fine Arts Coordinator and High School Choral Music Teacher Mrs. Trissa Lucht.

“Hudson’s God-given ability has been evident, and this honor only supports what we have known for some time. Hudson’s future is bright, not only because of his great musical talent, but also because of the humility and Junior Hudson Harris grace that he exhibits during is one of only six tenors these times of recognition. I am from the KC Metro thankful to have the opportunity area to be named to the Missouri All-State Choir. to be his teacher and fellow musician!”

Every year, 4th - 6th grade students have the opportunity to showcase the gifts and abilities God has given them at the Elementary Talent Show. The Elementary Student Council sponsors the event and works as stage crew, ushers, emcees, and concession stand workers; and students participate in open auditions, a dress rehearsal, and the show. This year, the acts were full of vocal and instrumental music and poetry. Student Council will donate the funds raised at the concessions to a charity of their selection.

Secondary Students Selected for KC Metro All-District Choirs Thirteen secondary choir members have earned a spot in the Kansas City Metro All-District Choirs for 2020-21.

The students selected include sophomores Olivia Truesdale and Catherine Cramer, junior Hudson Harris, and senior Ryan Wagy for Mixed Chorus; sophomore Keyler Quessenberry and seniors Annie Harsch, Mackenzie Madsen, Alysa Ward, and Grace Filer for SSAA Chorus; and sophomore Caleb Harold, juniors Brennen Ross and Elijah Burns, and senior Ben Schwab for TTBB Chorus.

Students submitted audio auditions and were selected by a panel of judges. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, these Honor SCA students named to the TTBB KC Metro All District Chorus (LChoirs are on paper only this year.

SCA International Progr am Director Meets with 31 Countries Kathy Tharp, International Program Director, spent three days holding 56 Zoom meetings with international student recruiting agents from 31 countries around the world. Nanette Flynn, who has been interning at SCA to fulfill hours for her K-12 Educational Leadership degree, assisted Mrs. Tharp with meetings and follow up.

“It was so interesting speaking with people from

various countries and learning about each country and how COVID has impacted them.

Some countries were barely impacted and other agents shared that student education has been minimal the past year.

There are still lots of students wanting to study abroad but parents are waiting to see how things will settle down,” shared Mrs. Tharp.

Take Aways from the Meetings and Webinars • New countries with strengthening economies sending significant numbers of international students are Vietnam and several countries in Africa, like Ghana, Zambia, Nigeria, and Uganda.

• Eastern European countries like Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Russia also have a good number of students

interested in study abroad.

China remains a strong sending country but has diminished numbers.

• While Brazil has a struggling economy, it remains in the top sending countries.

Although Spain’s economic growth was impacted by COVID, there are many students waiting to study abroad. (continued on p. 11)

International Experience...An SCA Tr adition Every February, secondary World Language students and teachers and International Students create an atmosphere where students and faculty can “experience” aspects of another culture. Sights, sounds, and smells transport participants to various countries around the world.

“I was so proud of my students for putting in so much effort to learn about Chinese culture and share their findings with their fellow students,” said Mandarin Teacher Michael Mayor. For one of the activities, Mandarin students created a Celebrating and menu and those interested in experiencing ordering had to ask for the food cultures from in Mandarin.

Health Office Notes Proper hand washing is still the best way to prevent the spread of germs.

COVID-19 Policy Update If your child has COVID-19 symptoms, they can now return to school with a negative COVID-19 test. We NO LONGER require that they have separate doctor’s note stating they can return to school. Remember our policy of fever and vomiting free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication prior to returning to school! If your child wakes up and is ill-appearing, please keep them home at least for the morning and see how they are feeling. Please report all illnesses to the Health Office. Elementary ages are reported to 816-524-0185, ext. 206, and for secondary students, please report illness to 816-525-1480, ext. 359.

Spring Allergies Along with the beautiful weather and blossoming flowers comes our dreaded allergy symptoms! Parents, if your child is an allergy sufferer or has developed new allergies, please remember to give them medication before school. Many kids complain of headaches, itchy and watery eyes, scratchy throats, etc. It is hard for them to concentrate during school with these complaints. The health office does not keep allergy medication in stock. If your child may need allergy medications during the day, please fill out the appropriate medication permission forms (found in the health clinic or

we can e-mail them) and bring the form along with the medication to the Health Office.

Immunizations, Preparing for the New School Year Your child may be in need of immunizations prior to next school year. If he/she will be entering kindergarten, eighth, or twelfth grade, there are additional immunizations required by the State of Missouri. Please review the requirements with your child’s physician and send us updated records as soon as possible. After September 16, if your student does not have a compliant immunization record/religious exemption on file, or proof of “in progress” status, he/she will not be allowed at school. If you are choosing not to immunize your student for religious reasons, you must contact the Health Department or Department of Health & Senior Services for the proper cardboard form.

God Makes the Volcanoes

We love hands on learning at SCA! We want our students to not only learn, but LOVE learning and have fun doing it! We start our hands-on learning approach with our youngest learners. Recently, Mrs. Finch’s preschool class made homemade volcanoes as part of studying the letter V! With eyes wide as they watched the chemicals react, Mrs. Finch asked, “Class who makes volcanoes?” And the entire group responded, “God does.”

The term of one Board of Education member expires this spring. John Kliewer has served two terms on the Board. His youngest child, Griffin, graduates this year, joining sister, Jessa, and brother, Preston, as SCA alumni. John has served as Vice President for several years, on the finance committee, and most recently as chair of the Head of School Search Committee. John has been a valuable member of the Board and will most definitely be missed. Please join me in thanking John for his faithful service to SCA and the Board!

The 2021 Board Election will be held the last week of April with ballots sent by email to eligible voters.

The Board also has an open pastor position with three pastors interested in serving in this role. Please pray for the Lord’s hand over the open positions.

Cordell’s Corner: SCA is Financially Healthy A Look at R atios Some simple ratios indicate the financial health of Summit Christian Academy or any nonprofit organization. Following are three such ratios.

1) Operating Reserve Ratio. How about our financial security and liquidity? What is the size of our reserves? It’s a portion of a year or number of months.

Total unrestricted net assets are divided by total annual expenses that don’t include depreciation and amortization.

SCA’s average over the last three years was 89%. That’s a healthy ratio. That’s 11 months. The higher the ratio, the greater the financial security. But you may not want it too high. That may indicate funds are hoarded. Opportunities may be missed to expand the mission.

SCA is growing AND enhancing opportunities AND putting resources aside each year. That’s a recipe for great long-term financial success!

2) Program Expense Ratio. How much is spent on program versus operating and fundraising? Total program expenses are divided by total expenses. The average ratio over the past three years is 85%.

SCA’s high ratio is very positive. It shows strong commitment toward the core mission.

If this ratio is very high, it could indicate a reluctance to invest in infrastructure. For example, perhaps more funds should be spent on support service personnel or fundraising, in order to grow.

SCA monitors the expense mix between program and support services. Our goal is to keep this ratio high, but not sacrifice opportunities to expand program services.

3) Profit Margin Ratio. Do earnings exceed spending? By what percent?

If the ratio is really high, charges for services may be too high or there’s been great fundraising success.

On the other hand, the ratio may be too low. Charges may be inadequate or expenses too high, or perhaps the fundraising is inadequate.

SCA’s goal is to balance charges and expenses properly.

Charges must be reasonable and expenses appropriate.

Every financial decision impacts these ratios. Will you pray with us to discern God’s will in all of these matters? We want to expand and grow while staying healthy and strong.
