Anchored at SCA Summit Christian Academy’s (SCA) school year is well underway. While 2020 has started out differently in many areas, we are thankful that we were able to come together for in-person classes.

“Having served as the Head of School for the past 21 years, each year is different and unique, but 2020 has certainly had challenges,” shared SCA Head of school Linda Harrelson. “While the world we live in is different, we serve a God that is unchanging and steadfast. That is why our theme for the year ‘Anchored’ is so appropriate.”

SCA will also be engaging with families and stakeholders through the SCA Annual Fund. The fund provides money needed to support SCA each year. Funds donated

to the Annual Fund and Corporate Partnership program will go to support enhancements of the school as well as the ability to continue offering excellence in all areas of the school.

Donations to the “Anchored” Annual Fund campaign can be made online through the summit-christian-academy.org website by clicking the Support SCA tab, then Contribute Online from the drop down. Or if you prefer, a check payable to SCA can be sent to either office to the Development Department’s attention. All financial donations to the SCA Annual Fund are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Elementary Chapel

by Charissa Sanders “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” Hebrews 6:19a.

God is a God of promises. We can see this in the Bible from the very beginning. In Hebrews 6, the writer reminds the readers of Abraham and the promises God made to him. God made a special covenant with Abraham. God also made a new covenant with believers in Jesus after His death, burial, and resurrection. In this new covenant, we have the promise of Jesus, Our Hope. In Jesus, we have salvation, forgiveness, belonging, and love. That is God’s promise to us that is firm and secure.

Elementary chapel is scheduled each week on Thursday mornings. During our elementary chapel times, we have

been unpacking this truth that Jesus is our anchor. While our chapels are by video right now, we continue to hear impactful messages from covenant church pastors and school leaders about how to hold onto Jesus as our anchor no matter what is going on around us.

During the month of October, we will be shifting our focus to one of many promises that God has made to us— that God loves us. I know that this is a simple promise, but with it comes such a deep level of assurance and meaning.

We will challenge your students to anchor themselves to God’s love and live in that joy and peace each day.

Students Gather for SCA’s See You at the Pole SCA students, faculty, staff, and families gathered for See You at the Pole on September 23. See You at the Pole is a nationwide initiative encouraging students to unite in worship and prayer before God. This student-organized and led event included students from across the campus.

One SCA teacher shared, “I get to spend every day in person with a group of children who pray and will lead their generation and change the world.”

Fourth grade students pray at See You at the Pole. The students gathered together one class at a time, various times throughout the day so that they could do so in a safe manner. Students prayed for each other, their families, teachers, faculty, staff, leaders, and the nation.

Physical Education in Sixth Gr ade, More than Just Gym Time Sixth grade PE is off to a great start! Students are blessed with the opportunity to use the amazing facilities at EXOS – formerly Boost Fitness.

“Every Tuesday and Thursday, sixth grade students travel to EXOS and are trained by a sports trainer,” shared PE teacher Mr. McGregor. “We have been going over linear movement, proper form, and dynamic warmups. Trainer Ryan Ruble does an excellent job of interacting with the kids and leading them to achieve their goals.”

This high level of physical fitness provides students with the ability to learn the proper technique when exercising to help reduce injury.

Early education or early childhood is a term that refers to the period from a child’s birth to kindergarten.

Early education is vital for children to learn how to interact with others, including peers, teachers, and parents, and begin developing interests that will stay with them as they continue to grow.

Early education is not only learning about necessary skills. It is time when children learn critical social and emotional skills, and partnerships are formed between the child, their parents, and teachers.

When partnerships are created successfully, it lays the groundwork for continuing throughout the child’s education.

Did you know here in the SCA Early Education Department, we have curriculum guides, scope and sequence, and daily lesson plans? We use curriculum guides to create effective lesson plans that focus on the objectives and goals we have for preschool and prekindergarten students.

Working Through Challenging Season

by Lance Quessenberry Athletic Director

God has been so good! As we’ve walked through the fall athletic season together, the thought of God’s goodness has popped in my head many times. He Lance Quessenberry has blessed SCA with so many amazing people to work through this challenging season.

Our student athletes have had great attitudes as practice and game schedules change multiple times. They have adjusted their expectations as the norms of the past are no longer normal. The changes can cause anxiety and stress, but our student athletes have handled it with flying colors.

Coaches are another group who don’t like change to norms. They are well known for established routines that have made their program successful in the past.

Unfortunately, our coaches have had to adjust, and even totally revamp, the way they prepare their teams. To their credit, they have done whatever it takes to help their athletes learn mentally and prepare physically. Their “whatever it takes” attitudes should be commended and, as their director, I am proud to be working through this with them.

Our awesome faculty has been encouraging and helpful to our student athletes and coaches. They understand the challenges everyone is facing and have put in extra time when needed or communicated needed information to keep everyone on the same page. Thank you, faculty, for your extra efforts!

The administrative team is an amazing group. They have found ways to make athletic events happen even though we seemed blocked on every side. They have made

adjustments to provide teams what they need and to make practices, games, and events happen. The fall season that everyone has enjoyed would not have been possible without their leadership and guidance.

Lastly, our parents have been understanding when changes come at the last second. Even more, they have been thankful when games are able to be rescheduled, or we find a way to make an event happen. As an Athletic Director, I enjoy the hard work when I know parents appreciate what is being done – not only by our Athletic Department, but also by our coaches, faculty, and Administration. Thank you, parents!

Our philosophy during this time has been to keep kids doing what they love for as long as possible. If it takes wearing a mask, social distancing, limiting fans, rescheduling games, or even quarantining, we will do it! Providing our student athletes with these experiences and the opportunity to glorify God with their talents is all that matters. I hope all of you feel the same.

Cross-Country Team Starts Season Strong Varsity cross-country has had great success so far this year! The boys’ and girls’ teams won the first team meet at Midway on September 2. The top girl is Adriana McGregor with a current personal record (PR) of 20:12. She placed first in the Midway meet and consistently finishes in the top five. Lauren McCoy, Katie Coats, Georgia Baxter, Elise Welch, Mia Murkin, Charlotte Brownlee, Mara Reasoner, and McKinzie Parks are all contributing to the team’s success as well. top finisher for the boys’ team. He also finished 1st at Midway and his PR for the season is 16:49. Jacob Dean, Isaiah McGregor, Cade Zucca, Ryder Thompson, and Luke Stienstra are also putting forth great effort.

The cross-country teams attribute their success and unique atmosphere to the value they place on being close – like a family. Each day before practice, we read God’s Word and pray. Coach McGregor reports

Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.” The team has had a unique year with all that is going on in our culture.

SCA Announces Homecoming Court Nominees and King & Queen SCA recently announced the 2020 Homecoming Court nominees and King & Queen.

Homecoming King was announced at the Pep Rally held during homecoming week and Senior JoJo Cunningham is the 2020 SCA Homecoming King. Senior Mady Gaw is the 2020 SCA Homecoming Queen and she was crowned queen during half-time of the Homecoming football game.

SCA won the game 41-0 against University Academy. The game was played at Walton Field on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Elementary Music Makes a "Key Change" The 2020-21 school year has been full of “changes!”

Elementary music is still being taught with a “sing, say, move, play” approach but, like everything else, some adjustments have been made.

“Singing and speaking activities have been limited.” shared Elementary Vocal Music Teacher Mrs. Bounds “However, we have increased our movement and playing (instruments) portion of this method. I have also added listening and evaluating music, as well as music performance and some music history into the curriculum.”

“Students are responding very favorably to the new activities and material,” Mrs. Bounds shared. “They are enjoying as well as appreciating the more diverse music knowledge that is being covered and learned.”

Kindergarten – Students recently had their first listening lesson through the song “Ballet of Chicks in Their Shells,”

by Russion composer Mussorgsky. They started with looking at the “chicks” artwork and moved about the music area like chicks do. The students were taught to learn the different sections of the music and move appropriately with each section. Finally, they learned the instruments that were played during the piece and watched professional musicians perform it. A coloring activity was also completed that showed their aural and visual recognition of the instruments from the music.

First Grade – Students started the year listening to “Viennese Musical Clock,” by Austrian composer Kodaly.

They viewed clock artwork and looked to recognize the clock that best matched the sounds of the music. They were taught to recognize the main melody, moving with it every time they heard it. They were also able to view a photo of the actual clock that inspired the piece and do a coloring activity that showed the comprehension of the “mood” of the piece.

Second Grade – The second grade curriculum really HAS RHYTHM! They began the year focusing on rhythms involving quarter and eighth notes and quarter rests. “We have read and performed lots of rhythms lately,” shared Mrs. Bounds. “They are also learning how to place notes on a staff, including the pitches so-mi. Working at music theory is a GREAT “COVID” activity!”

Third Grade – While second grade has been learning a lot about rhythm, so has the third grade class. “We have been learning about pitched and unpitched instruments,” shared Mrs. Bounds. “We have successfully read and played many rhythms on these instruments. The students were thrilled to watch a portion of ‘STOMP!’ as part of this unit.

They marvelled at how the musicians/performers made music out of everyday stuff as well as how much practice it must take to reach their level of skill.”

Fourth & Fifth Grade – Students in the fourth and fifth grades have been immersed in American patriotic music history the past couple weeks. “They really enjoyed learning about ‘America the Beautiful’ and ‘The Star Spangled Banner,’ ” shared Mrs. Bounds.

“Both songs have amazing back stories — ask a 4th or 5th grader to tell you about them! We have particularly enjoyed watching and evaluating performances of these songs. They are always asked to share what they noticed, valued and/or wondered. These questions prompt great discussions.”

Sixth Grade – The sixth grade students have been studying American music history, too, but another type of style called African American Spirituals, specifically “Exekiel Saw the Wheel” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”

“Students were intrigued by the coded messages in these songs,” shared Mrs. Bounds. “We also explored the folk song, ‘Follow The Drinking Gourd.’ We marvelled at the fact that we see the same big dipper (drinking gourd) the slaves saw as they made their way north to freedom. Their comments concerning what they noticed, valued, and/or wondered about these slave songs were deep. My favorite comment was that, ‘this is NOT how God wanted things to be.’ Amen!”

Mrs. Bounds continues to change keys with the recommendations and is looking forward to the new things God shows her that our kiddos should learn/be exposed to in elementary music class.

International

eCampus...International Style SCA eCampus is reaching around the globe to two seniors and one freshman in China. Tony Zhang has been at SCA since his freshman year and was looking forward to being a co-captain on the soccer team. His good friend, Jackson Maruschak, captain of the soccer team, shared with Mrs. Tharp, International Program Director, that he really misses Tony, especially since he is now the only senior on the team.

Tony is doing an internship with IT Director Mr. Dan Cockrell and is piloting eCampus on another continent. Tony documents the issues he and the other two students encounter and then finds solutions. “It’s great to remain a part of SCA and contribute by working out the problems we face on eCampus and helping Mr. Cockrell with projects he gives me,” shared Tony.

This is Franklin Zhang’s third year at SCA and he certainly never anticipated doing his senior year online in China with a 13-hour time difference. Franklin is staying connected with SCA through video calls to teachers and friends and emails. He showed Mrs. Tharp around his home on the 29th floor of his

apartment building, with an amazing view of the city of Fuzhou from his balcony. Franklin is helping the SCA IT Department by making instructional videos and is interning with Chinese teacher Michael Mayor. Franklin is creating videos and materials for SCA’s Chinese class and is happy to stay in touch and connected in creative ways.

“Both these young men are very gifted,” commented Mr. Cockrell.

“They are helping us create instructional videos for teachers on our YouTube channel and help desk. We are so grateful for their help.”

The International Program has certainly been impacted by the global pandemic and, for

the first time, graduating international seniors decided to stay in the U.S. during the summer with their host families so they could continue on to college. A decision was made to not accept new students this year but to make sure the current six international students are well cared for.

“We were pleasantly surprised to hear from a family that was moving to our area from the U.K. They read about the International Program on our website and applied. We are excited to welcome Olivia GrayHiggins to 9th grade this year and she is the first student to come to SCA from England.”

Olivia studied through

eCampus while making her journey to SCA. Her family quarantined in Barbados in order to be allowed to enter the U.S. and then quarantined again for 14 days before her first day of class on September 23.

Mr. Finch welcomed Olivia with a giant chocolate chip cookie that said, “Welcome to America.”

Cordell’s Corner: FAQs About 529 Plans for K-12 Students This topic may look familiar, since we presented this information originally in 2018. Many of you are new to SCA, so we wanted to make sure you were aware of this beneficial tax-saving opportunity. It is also a reminder for you long-term SCA families to consider taking advantage of these 529 Plans as well, if you haven’t already done so.

What are 529 Plans?

They are special tax-advantaged investment accounts, originally designed to help families pay for college expenses. But, recently amended legislation now allows parents to use these plans to pay educational expenses at K-12 public, private, or religious schools as well.

How can I set up a 529 Plan and what does it cost?

Plans can be set up with any investment broker or directly with the State of Missouri (MOST 529 Plans) or the State of Kansas (Learning Quest 529 Plans).

There are no fees for setting Cordell Dick Director of Major Gifts up state-sponsored MOST or Learning Quest 529 Plans; however, your financial advisor may charge a small fee to do so.

Are contributions into 529 Plans tax deductible?

Yes, for state income tax purposes; however, each state has its own limits. In the State of Missouri, a state income tax deduction is available for annual contributions to 529 Plans of up to $16,000 for married couples filing jointly or $8,000 for single taxpayers. In Kansas, the state income tax deduction is available for up to $6,000 per plan for married couples filing jointly or $3,000 per plan for single taxpayers.

How long do funds need to be held in a 529 Plan before they can be withdr awn?

The legislation did not require a minimum time period for the funds to be held in a 529 Plan account before they can be withdrawn. Therefore, a family may withdraw funds that are needed to pay for qualifying educational expenses soon after the date of deposit without jeopardizing the income tax benefits of the plan.

Is the income or earnings that accumulate inside 529 Plans taxable?

No, income and earnings that accumulate inside 529 Plans are not taxable for either federal or state income tax purposes.

Will my 529 Plan(s) change my SCA FACTS account?

No. Your FACTS tuition payment plan will remain in effect. You will be responsible for submitting reimbursement requests to your 529 Plan administrator for withdrawing qualified educational expenses. The 529 Plan should reimburse your personal account directly.

Are withdr awals from 529 Plans taxable?

No, withdrawals for qualified educational purposes are not taxable if the withdrawals do not exceed $10,000 per year for each 529 Plan for K-12 students. There are penalties for excess withdrawals or for paying for nonqualifying expenses.

Elementary Celebr ates Reader Leaders SCA recently celebrated 13 Reader Leaders in first through sixth grades. These students took time from their summer to read a book from an approved list and completed a written summary and/or visual tool for the novel that they read.

The Reader Leaders were celebrated during a special luncheon with Mrs. Sanders. This is the SCA first through sixth grade students were recently honored as “Reader eleventh year SCA has honored students through Leaders” at a special luncheon. The school had 13 students who achieved this the Reader Leader program. honor.

Philosophy of Education SCA believes that Christian education is a vital link in the successful rearing of children. It is the desire of the founders and staff of SCA to work together with the family and their church in reinforcing high moral values and the Christian lifestyle, while providing an excellent academic experience (Ephesians 5:22-33; Colossians 3:23; Genesis 2:18-25; Proverbs 9:10; Romans 1:21-27; Romans 12:1-21).

SCA can never replace the significant spiritual impact of a godly home and church. The parents maintain the ultimate responsibility in spiritual matters, but the school can assist them by including sound biblical teaching and through the example and leadership of the faculty (Romans 8:29; Proverbs 1:7).

To educate and prepare for life without including God as central to life does not fully prepare a child.

The home, church, and school must work together to prepare children spiritually, morally, socially, and academically for their adult lives. The school’s primary responsibility is to provide the student with the necessary academic skills. This responsibility cannot be fulfilled in a spiritual vacuum. The school must also provide spiritual and moral direction in academic pursuits as well as personal life (John 8:32 and Romans 12:2).
