A VERY SPECIAL YEAR

There’s no day in Charm City quite like marathon day. This

year, though, has a very special meaning for a couple reasons;

we are finally back to live races in Baltimore, and this year we

will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Baltimore Running Festival!

For the past nineteen months, the world has gone through

an unprecedented and extremely tough time in our history, and

many people have experienced hardships. The world was turned upside down as businesses were shut down, and people were

unable to do many of the things they loved. But there is hope. We are starting to feel a sense of revitalization as our old way

of life begins to open back up. Live races are resuming, and the world of running is starting its journey back to normalcy.

THE 2021 BALTIMORE RUNNING FESTIVAL IS A CUPLESS RACE COVID has forced everyone to look at new and inventive solutions to race day challenges. In order to reduce touch points for our volunteers and participants and to keep disposable cups out of the Baltimore community and waterways, we are initiating A CUP FREE POLICY for the 2021 Baltimore Running Festival. We have utilized this program at all of the other Corrigan Sports events and have received solid reviews. Traditional waterstops require lots of volunteer groups that are hard to come by in the current climate. It’s also good for our Bay, the environment and safe for runners! RUNNERS ARE REQUIRED TO CARRY THEIR OWN WATER BOTTLE DURING THE RACE AND BRING IT TO THE START LINE FILLED AND READY TO GO. HOW DO I GET WATER ON THE COURSE? There will be several self-serve fluid stations on the course–depending on the event you are running—offering numerous valves allowing you to fill a 20-ounce water bottle in just seconds. Participants will be

responsible for bringing and carrying their own container with them during the event. Handheld containers can include a bike bottle, a hand-held running bottle, Camelbak, a Hydra-Pouch, or any type of non-glass water bottle of your choosing. WHERE WILL THE REFILL STATIONS BE LOCATED? In general, they appear about every 4 miles. • For the marathon, refill stations are near mile markers, 2, 6, 10, 13.5, 16, 20.5, 24 and 25 • For the half-marathon, refill stations are near mile markers, 3, 7, 11 and 12 • For the 10k, refill stations are near mile markers 2 and 5 • For the 5k, the refill station will be near mile marker 1.5 Refill stations near marathon miles 10 (mile 1.5 of the 5k), 20.5 (mile 7 for the half) and 25 (mile 12 of the half & mile 5 of the 10K) will have self-serve coolers for both Gatorade and water. (MARKED IN BOLD ABOVE)

The pacers are a passionate, friendly and entertaining group that will lead you through the 26.2 mile tour of Baltimore and the time will just pass by. Some of the pace leaders sing songs, some play trivia games, some tell jokes (some good, some meh…but they try hard). No, sorry, there are no boring pace groups with this team.

NUMBER 3 There will be thousands of runners on race day, but if you don’t know anyone, you might feel a bit lonely in the sea of runners. Lonely? At a marathon? Not with a pace group! Your pace leaders will become your instant friends. They will provide you with answers to your questions. They are knowledgeable about marathons and running– we challenge you to quiz them. Most importantly, you will be making new friends with the participants in your pace group since they are all running the same pace as you. You will instantly bond with people which makes the race go by quickly.

NUMBER 2 If you are not very consistent and afraid you will start out too quickly because of the excitement or that the early rush may cause me to have to slow down at the end, you may consider running with a pace group. Yes, with the excitement of thousands of runners and the adrenaline pumping, it is only natural to want to speed up at the beginning of the race. And you are correct, it could impact your finishing time if you go out too fast. You may ask, if that is a common thing to do, how do I prevent it from happening to me. That’s easy – JOIN A PACE GROUP. We run at a consistent per mile pace. You don’t even have to look at your watch – the pacers are your watch. They will not only run consistent miles, but they will bring the group in at the goal time. Just join the group, enjoy the scenery and let the pace

This year we are joined by a man running 50 marathons in 50 states for his 50th birthday. Aaron Burros plans to run his 38th marathon of the year in Baltimore on October 9th. His running journey begins way before his 50th year! Back in 2010, Burros was almost 400 pounds and decided it was time to make a change, so he turned to running. Burros lost 100 pounds in a year and decided to start running to continue to lose weight. “I ended up telling my friend that used to run cross country that I tried running 3 miles, and I was in so much pain. And he challenged me to keep it up and run 2 miles a day for six days and give him a call on the 7th day. And since then, I was hooked.” Burros was beginning to get a hold on his life and weight when a tragic event occurred on November 28th, 2015, when a shooter opened fire at Aaron’s workplace. After hearing the commotion from the back room, Burros made a brave decision to run toward the shooter to help his co-workers. After assuring that his colleagues safely got away, Burros faced one of the shooters head-on and was shot, falling to the floor. Luckily for Burros, the bullet missed his torso and hit the floor. After that missed shot, he got up and decided to run. He was hit in both glutes as he ran, but he managed to get to safety without being shot fatally.

Burros still battles with depression, anxiety, and PTSD from the 2015 shooting, but he continues to run to give himself a sense of purpose and relief. “As I began planning with my psychologist and psychiatrist something I could do to help me regain a sense of purpose for life and rebuild my hope in humanity (after being shot several times in a workplace shooting and suffering from an extreme case of PTSD), I decided to celebrate my 50th birthday year and raise funds for St. Jude children’s Research Hospital.” Now Burros runs for another purpose- fundraising for St. Jude Research Hospital in Tennessee, and he has almost reached his goal of $50,000.

What is your favorite or most memorable year? What made it so great?

I guess my favorite was when I wanted to reach my goal of 100 marathons by running the Baltimore Marathon as my 100th in 2017. Another memorable year was 2001 because the marathon was being held about a month after 9/11. It was a day of heavy hearts, even wondering should we be doing this with so much pain in America. What is one piece of advice you would give a first-time Baltimore Running Festival runner?

Where are you from?

My hometown is Hagerstown, MD, and most of my family still reside there - just up the road from Baltimore but lived in New Jersey for marathons 2001 - 2011 and currently reside in Durham, NC, where I have run marathons 2012 - 2020. Why do you love running/ do you run for a specific cause?

I was a sprinter at South Hagerstown High School running the 100, 200, and sprint relays, a 4-year varsity letterman in track, and a 3-year letterman in football. I had a great coach in Harrison Lanham, and a few years ago, I wrote him a letter telling him so (attached). Thirty years removed from high school, and I still remembered his guidance. I love running because it has gotten me through many challenges (primarily mental) in my life and for my sanity. It has afforded me health, weight control, and a supportive community. Although I donít run for a specific cause now, I did commit to running for the Durham Rescue Mission in 2014, donating $1 per mile run for an entire year.

On the current course, manage pace from miles 4 - 16. These can be very fast miles, but you will have 6-8 very miserable miles on the hills if you burn the pace. Luckily the first 3+ miles are uphill, so it allows a controlled start and easier pace. Upon hitting mile 4, you will feel warmed up, and the downhills will take on a life of their own, as well as all of the support back through the inner harbor through mile 14. Itís a very fair course, but know that the elevation gain is around 1200 feet, and most of that is in the later miles when youíre tired. Also, itís a festival so have fun! How is the Baltimore Running Festival different from other races you’ve run in?

The best events make it an experience, whether large or small, and that experience must include the community. Very few of us are there to win the thing or even place in an age group. We are there for the experience, and it needs to be a total package. Baltimore is the total package, great venue, historic city, great festival. Can it be better, yep! CSE listens if enough people speak honestly. How has your family played a role in your running journey? What have they done to keep you going on this path?

My wife has been my biggest supporter and crew chief. Her support is unwavering. She will not let me miss a Baltimore Marathon, not that I ever intend to, but I know if I have the slightest consideration, she will encourage me.

Why do you continue to run the Baltimore Running Festival?

Do you feel a sense of accomplishment being one of the few to complete all 20 BFFs?

Itís freaking fun! I have run 109 official marathons, with another 5 in my neighborhood. It truly is a Festival. For some marathons, there is no media coverage (except for the intrusions itís going to cause), hardly any local support, and a shotty organization. The local support for Baltimore is amazing - news pieces, tv media coverage, live race coverage, spectators throughout from all walks of life, all types of neighborhoods, the diversity, the police support, and the setting of the inner harbor.

Yes, absolutely. Running a marathon is hard and takes effort and dedication, not just the day of but the months leading up to the event. My 3rd and 6th fastest marathons are Baltimore marathons. Seriously, in those 20 years, the Baltimore Marathon has been the only constant. I have had multiple jobs, lived in two different states, have had two wives, new lives, deaths, different cars, different pets, etc. - but every October for the past 20 years, I have run the Baltimore Marathon.

For more than 40 years, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center has been providing uncompromising and unparalleled care to those that have been critically injured. A survivor’s life after trauma has many ups and downs. Healing the physical injuries of trauma is only a portion of recovery: an individual also needs to heal emotionally. We are in awe of the strength and courage that must be mobilized to heal, and we understand that recovery after a devastating injury can be a long and complex journey—often lasting a lifetime. We are committed to supporting patients and their families throughout their journey toward wellness through the Trauma Survivors Network

ROLAND PARK ANNUAL FUND The Roland Park Annual Fund Incorporated (the Annual Fund) was formed to fund programs and expenditures at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School (RPEMS) that cannot be funded by other means and enhance the learning experience for the entire school community. Over the past year, the Annual Fund has supported many programs to help students and teachers transition to the virtual platform, such as funding for a school psychologist, online resources for teachers to use in their Zoom classes.

FRANCIS SCOTT KEY ELEMENTARY Francis Scott Key Elementary/ Middle School is located on a sprawling green campus in the Baltimore neighborhood of Locust Point. We deliver on our mission by providing outstanding programming and having committed teachers, students, families, staff, and local and nationally renowned community partners. In addition to serving our neighborhood enrollment zone, we offer Advanced Academics to middle school students from across the city.

JOHNS HOPKINS CHILDREN’S CENTER Founded in 1912 as the children’s hospital at Johns Hopkins, the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center offers one of the most comprehensive pediatric medical programs in the country, with more than 92,000 patient visits and nearly 9,000 admissions each year. It is consistently ranked among the top children’s hospitals in the nation by U.S.News & World Report and is Maryland’s largest children’s hospital with the only statedesignated Trauma Service and Burn Unit for pediatric patients.

BACK ON MY FEET Back on My Feet seeks to revolutionize the way society approaches homelessness. Our unique model demonstrates that individuals are better equipped to tackle the road ahead if you first restore confidence, strength, and self-esteem. For all in need, we aim to provide: practical training and employment resources for achieving independence; an environment that promotes accountability; and a community that offers compassion and hope.

PPROM (MAKING WAVES FOR CORAL + THE PPROM FOUNDATION) The PPROM Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides resources and support for those experiencing Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PPROM) in pregnancy and beyond. PPROM occurs in 4 of 100 pregnancies, is the identifiable leading cause of preterm birth in the United States, impacting approximately 40% of all premature deliveries. Our three-pronged focus includes Advocacy, Partnerships, and the PPROM Registry.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY DETERMINATION DetermiNation is the American Cancer Society’s event endurance program, spanning various sports, including cycling, running, hiking, yoga, and more. The collective efforts of the dedicated athletes who use their fortitude to help raise funds to take down cancer are nothing short of amazing. Join DetermiNation, and you’re not just participating in an endurance event. You’re pushing yourself to help save lives from cancer. Just like hard work goes into your event training, the American Cancer Society gives it our all through things like breakthrough research, a 24/7 cancer helpline, and free rides to chemo. Baltimore has long cherished its history as an American melting pot. The city’s population growth started in the mid-1800s, when an influx of immigrants from Germany and Ireland arrived. In the years following, newly minted Baltimoreans poured into the city from Poland, Russia, Ukraine and other Eastern European nations; after that came families from Italy, Greece and other home countries. These cultural influences are still visible in the city today, clustered in neighborhoods like Little Italy and Greektown, in institutions such as the Irish Railroad Workers Museum, and in traditions like the celebrated corned beef sandwiches at Atwater’s Deli. There’s much to celebrate about the energy and diversity that immigrants bring to a city. One of the best ways to explore Baltimore’s melting pot is through food. The food! Our city has a world of restaurant options dishing up delicious culinary traditions from around the globe like Latin American, Asian, French, Spanish, Mediterranean and more. 46

Interested in taking a mini tour of different cuisines in one afternoon? Head to one of our many urban markets, where you can snag bites of culinary traditions all in one stop; and many of which are on the marathon route. Seek out: R. House, Lexington Market, Cross Street Market, Union Collective or Broadway Market. Baltimore’s dining scene takes seafood very seriously, and there are endless ways to savor and sample Maryland blue crabs, fresh local oysters and other bounties of the Chesapeake Bay. There are many places where you can enjoy our state’s most classic cuisine ranging from brand new hot spots, hidden gems and those that are loved by locals just as much as visitors. Whether you’ve got an hour or a whole weekend, Visit Baltimore will help you tour our town like a local when you travel here for race weekend. Here are some Mini Adventures where you can mix and match to create your day for you:

IN TOWN WITHOUT A CAR DURING RACE WEEKEND? Baltimore has a few options to get you around town. CHARM CITY CIRCULATOR: Free bus service with four routes that go north-south and east-west, to many attractions and hotels. Take the Banner Route to get from the Inner Harbor to Fort McHenry. The circulator runs every 15-20 minutes seven days a week; hours vary. BALTIMORE WATER TAXI: Baltimore’s most scenic way to get around, with stops from the Inner Harbor to Canton. For a one-price, all-day pass, you can ride around the harbor or hop on and off to visit attractions and have lunch. ELECTRIC SCOOTERS: Baltimore’s newest mode of transportation, Bird and Lime electric scooters are available throughout the city. With an app, you can pick up a scooter wherever you find one, scoot around town and drop the scooter when you are done. Helmets and drivers’ licenses required. MTA: Maryland’s public transit authority operates the Light Rail and the Metro subway, plus more than 60 bus routes throughout the city. DITCH THE CAR (AND THE BIKE) FOR THE MOMENT —two electric

scooter companies, Bird and Lime, launched pilot programs in Baltimore last year, to resounding success. It couldn’t be easier to use—the dockless scooters are rented via app and require just $1 to unlock (and 15 cents per minute thereafter). You can ride up to 15 miles on a charge, so it’s a great way to see the city’s neighborhoods. If it’s a nice day, grab a bagel or a sandwich and swing by Federal Hill Park for a picnic with one of the best views of Baltimore’s skyline. Take a stroll (or hop back on your scooter) to see historic Federal Hill’s picturesque streets, lined with 18th and 19th-century rowhomes. After that, continue through Tide Point until you reach historic Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine, where Francis Scott Key wrote our national anthem during the War of 1812. GRAB A BEER AT A BREWERY (OR SIP A LOCAL SPIRIT) - Recent years

have seen a wellspring of local breweries and distilleries popping up in and around Baltimore. Visit the Mount Vernon cultural district, and stop at Brew House No. 16, a historic century-old firehouse-turnedrestaurant. The Brewer’s Art is an upscale brew pub set in a grand Mount Vernon town house. Pratt Street Ale House serves up beer from one of Baltimore’s oldest and longest-running breweries, Oliver Brewery. Ministry of Brewing is open for business inside the former St. Michael’s Church in Fells Point. Raven’s Stadium

overlooks Checkerspot’s tap room named for the Maryland state butterfly. Keeping with the outdoors theme, Diamondback Brewing Co. in Locust Point is named for Maryland’s official state reptile. Mobtown Brewing is fittingly situated in Brewers Hill. Monument City Brewing Co. is housed inside a former warehouse in Highlandtown. Finally, situated in Waverly on the site of the former Oriole’s Park from the early 1900s, Peabody Heights Brewery is a co-op that allows fledgling brewers to hone their beers under the guidance of a master brewer. Looking for something harder? Head to a distillery to sip an awardwinning local spirit—try Old Line Spirits for American whiskey and aged Caribbean rum, or Sagamore Spirit for rye whiskies. Cheers! WANDER A MUSEUM - Art abounds

in Baltimore. Those interested in an only-in-Baltimore museum experience might visit the American Visionary Art Museum, which is dedicated to showcasing self-taught artists. Baltimore Museum of Industry is located in an old cannery and has hands-on exhibits on various types of manufacturing from the early 20th century. Across town, the Baltimore Museum of Art is free and home to 95,000 objects. Sports fans should check out the Babe Ruth Birthplace & Museum dedicated to perpetuating the historic legacy of Babe Ruth, Baltimore’s Orioles, Ravens and Colts, and local and regional sports at the amateur, collegiate and professional levels.
