FOREST DEFENDERS Meet the Two-Man Crew Fighting the Region’s Most Resilient Invasive Plants

SAM BYARS AND WILL COFFEE are rarely apart during the work week. If it’s raining, they are in their shared office in a Pisgah National Forest visitor center, planning, mapping, and placing orders. If the sun is out, they are in the field, cutting, spraying, and collecting data in the deep woods of western North Carolina. Whatever the day’s tasks, they are together. Always together.

“Monday through Friday, I see Will more than I see my wife,” says Byars.

That’s a lot of the same face, the same voice, the same car music preferences, but the upside is the cohesion the men have built as the two halves of the Pisgah Conservancy’s Invasive Plant Management Crew. In the nearly two years since the unit was established, its numbers are impressive: nearly 300 acres of Pisgah land treated for invasive plant species like Kudzu, Autumn Olive, and Chinese Privet.

“Once you work together for so long, you kind of read each other's thoughts and you get to gage their investment in a certain project,” says Byars. “Building a good relationship with Will has been very important so that we can get the work done.”

Byars is more of a project manager and Coffee more of a botanist, varying skillsets mirroring the disparate paths that brought them together. Byars grew up in Salisbury, N.C., as an avid hunter and fisherman. Even at a young age, he knew he eventually wanted to work outside. More specifically, he wanted help protect the land that served as the backdrop to his boyhood adventures.

“I loved it so much that I wanted to give back and work in the conservation field,” he says.

Following high school, he enrolled in Haywood Community College’s forestry program, which helped position him for a job

with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The job took him all over his home state, from Cherokee to Wake County to the coast. In 2023, in search of something new and heeding a long-standing curiosity to explore the West, Byars and his wife moved to Bozeman, Montana. The scenery was spectacular. The work he found, mold remediation, was not.

“It was just a job to make money,” he remembers. “I wasn't passionate about it one bit.”

Six months into their Montana adventure, he saw a job posting for the Pisgah invasive species Crew.

The combined prospect of exciting work and a return to North Carolina was too much to resist. “This came about at the right time,” he says.

Coffee traveled a more circuitous route to Pisgah. In 1995, a year after his own high school graduation in New Jersey, he packed up his 1989 Ford Taurus and set off across the country in search of a fresh start. He traveled light: a skateboard, some camping gear, and only a skeletal plan to head towards Arizona.

“I wanted to work in the Grand Canyon, I wanted to spend some time in the Rockies, I wanted to go for long runs in the Sonoran Desert,” he remembers. “Stuff like that was just really appealing to me, and so I just kind of packed my car and left.”

Coffee ultimately enrolled in Arizona State University’s restoration ecology program, developing a technical understanding of his new home to go with the personal kinship fostered during weekend camping trips. He stayed out west for 16 years, working jobs as part of the inventory and monitoring program through Northern Arizona University, in Idaho’s Sawtooth National Recreation Area, and as a researcher for the Park Service in the Four Corners region, monitoring plant populations that were moving

due to changing climate. It was good work, meaningful work, but in 2019 he decided to move back east to be closer to family, settling on North Carolina due to its centrality. The change was drastic, professionally speaking.

“When I moved back here, I had to basically relearn plants and botany on the East Coast,” Coffee remembers. “You start moving west, and it just gets drier, drier, little by little. The terrain changes, the soils change, the water changes…I went from drought to deluge.”

Coffee first found work as a contractor for a stream restoration company before applying for the Pisgah invasive species crew.

In their first year, he and Byars treated more than 120 acres of land and that number has more than doubled in year two.

Even as their coverage area grows, Byars and Coffee are good with their two-man team. It allows them to stay nimble and act fast against their cunning, numerous foes. Kudzu is the region’s Big Bad Wolf, the mainstream posterchild for Southern invasive species, but less-notorious lieutenants, species

like Japanese Honeysuckle, Wisteria, Bittersweet, Stilt Grass, and Silver Plume Grass, can prove equally devastating to local species and systems. Byars notes shadetolerant Oriental Bittersweet as being particularly pesky.

“It's everywhere in the forest,” he explains. “The birds love the seeds. They'll move it 10 miles back off a road somewhere on a mountain, and then a tree will fall and will put a sunlight on it and it'll just jump up. It's proliferated the whole entire forest. We find it everywhere, everywhere in the whole forest.”

Both men point to being outside, being active, and the endless learning opportunities as the top perks of the job.

Coffee jokes that he would like to eventually work himself out of said position via full eradication but doesn’t see it happening. For now, the duo is happy to be moving in the right direction.

“I like being part of the solution in most situations, and I feel like that is kind of what I am here,” says Coffee. “That's kind of why I'm excited to wake up every day and go to work.”

With little preparation, an aging adventurer attempts his first Ironman

WHENEVER MY LIFE GETS TOO comfortable, I sign up to suffer. The races vary, but the goal is the same: to dig beneath my superficial self and uncover something deeper.

How do you know who you are and what you are made of? Sports are one way to find out. They are simulated battlefields where you are put to the test.

Ironman is still the original test of endurance: a 2.4-mile swim, 112mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run.

We have devised new and creative tests of stamina: adventure races, ultras, FKTs, Last Man Standing competitions, and Spartan races.

But Ironman has retained its allure.

In my early twenties, I did a Half Ironman, and I learned two important lessons: 1) I am a lousy swimmer; 2) I could not afford to be a triathlete. Most triathletes rode

bikes more expensive than my car.

For a runner like me, triathlons just gave everyone a giant head start.

So I stuck with running for the next three decades.

Then I turned 50. Ironman still whispered. But now I had a job, wife, and kids. I didn’t have time to train. I barely had time to squeeze in a run after work.

I put it out of my mind until one night, after putting the kids to bed, I walked outside. The last fireflies of late summer were climbing out of the meadow—neon sparks that flashed and faded. My life was like the firefly’s glow, I thought. It is one brief blink in the vast, dark night.

I went inside and registered for an Ironman.

And then I instantly realized it was a mistake.

The Ironman was in three weeks.

I had not trained for it. I didn’t even have a road bike. I hadn’t swum in years. My longest recent run was 10 miles. I didn’t tell my wife or kids or anyone else that I had registered.

I spent the next three weeks scrambling to line up logistics for the triathlon travel, nutrition, and gear I would need. I was used to just lacing up my shoes and heading out the door for a run.

To save money and shipping costs, I bought a used road bike off Craigslist and picked it up in a Starbucks parking lot the day before the race. I had never ridden the bike before, and 12 hours later, I would be attempting to ride it for 112 miles.

Honestly, though, I didn’t think I would get a chance to bike. I figured I wouldn’t make it out of the water alive or ahead of the cutoff time.

Before dawn on race morning, I stood amid a crowd of nearly 3,000 triathletes about to jump into a bone-chilling 58-degree river. The horn sounded, and I waded out into the maelstrom— arms flailing, bodies splashing, waves crashing everywhere. I tried to slow my breathing, but I was constantly bumped and pushed by other swimmers. I swallowed a lot of water. I zig-zagged downriver, unable to sight the course buoys through scratched goggles that our dog had recently chewed.

Finally, I calmed down and just counted strokes. And eventually, I saw the finish. I dug hard and climbed out onto dry land. I was alive! I would get to keep going.

On the bike, I realized once more how outclassed and out of place I was. Phenomenal bikes and athletes zipped past me. Their bikes made a cool clicking sound that mine did not. They were in a different league, and I was okay with that. I kept my head down and grinded away in slow motion. It was the farthest I had ever ridden.

And I was feeling it. My legs were Jell-O as I dismounted the bike and transitioned to the run. I hobbled through the first mile in the midafternoon heat. I tried to eat a PBJ but puked it up. A crippling pain throbbed in my left knee. The run was supposed to be the part where I could hold my own, but the wheels were coming off.

I did everything I could think of to distract myself from the pain. I

thanked every volunteer I passed.

I sang songs in my head—and sometimes out loud. I rapped the entire Beastie Boys album “Licensed to Ill.” Around mile 7, I passed two kids cheering with a hand-made sign that said: “1 out of 100 runners poops their pants. R U that one?” I had not yet shit myself, but I could feel the gurgles.

The kids reminded me of my boys back home. I couldn’t let them down. They still thought that I was a better athlete than I actually am, and I wanted to maintain the illusion for a little while longer. So I picked up the pace and found my stride.

Running faster hurt only slightly more, and it would get me to the finish line sooner.

All is suffering, said the Buddha.

But not all suffering is the same.

Halfway through the run, I passed day laborers in the fields, and I realized how selfish this all was.

My suffering was temporary and artificial. I could stop at any time without consequence and return to my comfortable life. For billions of other fellow human beings, their suffering was real, and there was no finish line.

Suddenly my pain didn’t hurt quite as much, and I decided to pour everything into the final 13 miles. Soon I was flying through the streets, almost as fast as I used to be. I wasn’t chasing a shadow of younger self anymore. I had let that go. I was just trying to dig for the best of what was left—and end the misery as quickly as possible.

I ran a 3:59 marathon—my slowest ever—and the one I am most proud of. And I crossed the finish line in 12 hours, an average Ironman time.

For me, average is awesome.

We are all running our own race.

Other athletes on the course help push us to reach for our best, but ultimately, we are only competing with ourselves. The race results change at different points in our life, but the challenge remains the same: can I dig deeper and touch something immortal?

I was still fully mortal. I spent an hour afterward wandering the parking lot searching for my rental car. Finally, I saw the flicker of headlights—a reminder of the firefly’s flash that led me here. I felt the warm glow of being fully alive.

HOW TO SAVE A SHELTER Through volunteer efforts, a historic A.T. structure finds new life in a North Carolina trail town.

IF THESE CHESTNUT LOG WALLS could talk, maybe they would reminisce about all the laughter shared inside them. Or maybe they would talk about the generations of mice that established their homes here over the years. These walls might joke that the structure has been facing the wrong way since it was built, often filling the open fourth side with snow in the winter and offering little break from mountain storms. Surely, these walls would talk about the strapping young Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) boys who dropped and notched the chestnut logs with hand tools and sweat equity over 80 years ago.

Walnut Mountain Shelter, along with all the stories and memories shared inside, is a piece of history.

The simple lean-to in the forest has seen its share of severe weather,

seasonal challenges, and an everchanging cast of characters over the years. Built in 1938 by the CCC, just one year after the Appalachian Trail was officially completed in 1937, the shelter sat on a windy ridge along the North Carolina/Tennessee line south of Hot Springs until recently.

After many years of collaboration and the efforts of two state forest services and multiple organizations, the Walnut Mountain Shelter was deconstructed and removed from Walnut Mountain by the Carolina Mountain Club (CMC) last March.

As a retired engineer and former CMC president, Tom Weaver saw the historic importance of saving the shelter and reimagined the next chapter of its legacy. As trails facilities manager, Weaver led the charge for the removal and eventual reassembly of the historic structure.

And boy, was it a slow, determined

charge. While working on the project, Weaver said he had emails dating back over a decade. Through his perseverance, the project slowly gained momentum and this spring the next chapter began.

"This shelter is part of Appalachian Trail history," Weaver said. "It tells a story that matters. We knew it deserved better than being torn down and forgotten.”

A combined 35 volunteers from multiple CMC trail crews, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy had the daunting task of carefully removing, photographing, and labeling every log in preparation for the next phase of Weaver’s master plan—rebuilding the structure in downtown Hot Springs.

The shelter was resurrected last June during National Trail Days in its new permanent home,

nestled behind the Hot Springs Welcome Center and Bluff Mountain Outfitters. Over 120 people joined for the workday, and 14 volunteers focused on putting the shelter back together, one log at a time. New additions include a concrete pad and artistically stacked rocks that function as the replacement for the first row of rotten original logs that could not be reused. The final touches were completed in July by six volunteers with a laundry list of minor details: staining the treated lumber sill plates, sealing the logs, securing the roof panels, caulking roof holes, and mounting a log book box.

The accessibility of this display, mere feet from the trail through downtown, is an interactive window into a part of Appalachian Trail history. While the A.T. has many wellknown challenging sections, Hot

Hikers follow the iconic symbols in the sidewalk that lead into town before climbing back up to the surrounding ridgetops.

The historic structure joins a short list of Appalachian Trail shelters that have been torn down and rebuilt as accessible displays, with less than five that have been rebuilt as permanent exhibits on the entire 2,197-mile trail. A shelter built by the first thru-hiker, Earl Shaffer, was dismantled and rebuilt inside the Appalachian Trail Museum in 2008.

Walnut Mountain Shelter is also a part of CCC history—and on an ever-shortening list of their shelters still in existence today. The CCC was active on the Appalachian Trail during the legendary public work-relief

program under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. Walnut Mountain Shelter was constructed in the classic three-walled Adirondack lean-to style that was favored in the early years of the trail. It was also once surrounded by stock fences that were common at the time around structures located on grazing lands.

Many early shelters, including most of the CCC structures, were built using the dead trunks of the great American chestnut trees. By the late 1920s, chestnut blight—a fungal disease accidentally imported to the United States from Asia—began decimating the American chestnut population.

The older chestnut shelters that still stand today owe much of their longevity to the strength and insect resistance of those chestnut logs.

By the end of 1939, there were 129 shelters recorded along the trail corridor. South of the

Pennsylvania line, however, there were only 29 total shelters, making Walnut Mountain one of the first shelters built on the Southern half of the trail. It also holds the title of one of the three oldest in a row still standing south of the Mason-Dixon Line (the oldest three in a row are in New York). Along with nearby Deer Park and Spring Mountain shelters, also built by the CCC, Walnut Mountain technically played shelter leapfrog over Deer Park and will maintain its historic legacy for now. The privy, however, will not

be rebuilt downtown.

In the end, hundreds of hands and volunteer hours went into the Walnut Mountain Project, which strengthened CMC’s collaborative relationship with Hot Springs and further solidified the town’s status as an official A.T. Trail Town. “The town is honored to showcase and steward this unique piece of trail history,” said Stacey Geyer of the Hot Springs Tourism Association, which now operates and maintains the facility.

Over time, more shelters will

be removed from the trail and, inevitably, new shelters will be built, but Walnut Mountain’s legacy will live on. So will the opportunity for new stories to be told within its chestnut walls. Hopefully, this time with a few less mice.

FORGOTTEN LANDS

The Southeast and Mid-Atlantic’s Best National Wildlife Refuges SHENANDOAH AND THE Smokies are world-renowned national parks. Pisgah, the Mon, and the GW-Jeff are some of the most popular national forests in the country. But there is a third group of federally owned lands that don’t receive nearly as much attention or visitation: national wildlife refuges.

National wildlife refuges are hidden gems, and the Southeast is chock full of them. From the mountains to the coast, the Southeast is home to 113 national wildlife refuges. These lesserknown lands and waters are oases of biodiversity and adventure.

Despite their name, most national wildlife refuges are actually open to hunting. But they have become even more popular with outdoor enthusiasts hoping to shoot wildlife with a camera. National wildlife refuges are some of the best places to observe the region’s largest black bears and the only place to spot red wolves—the most

endangered wolf in the world.

National wildlife refuges are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—the agency that also protects endangered species.

Some refuges are named specifically for a rare species that occurs there.

All refuges prioritize wildlife and generally limit logging, mining, and other extractive and industrial uses.

National parks and national wildlife refuges tend to be the most protected public lands, while national forests are the least protected. In the East, most of the logging, mining, drilling, and industrial resource extraction on public lands occurs in national forests.

National wildlife refuges protect more than 380 endangered species and provide thousands of miles of hiking and paddling trails, and most are free to visit, too.

Here are the best national wildlife refuges (NWR) in the region for breathtaking biodiversity and adventure.

ALLIGATOR RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, N.C. Yes, there are alligators in Alligator River NWR. But another species steals the show: red wolves.

Alligator River NWR and Pocosin Lakes NWR, its sister refuge next door, are home to the last red wolves in the wild. Currently, only around 30 red wolves remain— including 13 pups born this year from four litters.

Winter is a great time to visit the refuge. There are fewer biting bugs, and red wolves and other wildlife are more visible in the fields scattered throughout the refuge. If you’re lucky, you can see or hear a red wolf, especially around dawn or dusk. Hearing a wild red wolf howl echo across the landscape is one of the most aweinspiring natural experiences.

Just a few miles down the road in Columbia, N.C., the Red Wolf Center provides opportunities to see and hear red wolves that are part of the SAFE Program—a network of sanctuaries that care for captive-bred red wolves that may eventually be released into the wild.

Alligator River NWR is more than a wild wolf refuge. It has been called “America’s Amazon” because of its stunning array of species, including rare birds, otters, turtles, and some of the largest black bears in the country. Trails and gravel roads provide an abundance of

opportunities to explore the refuge, and blackwater creeks and rivers wind through the forests and fields.

Just across the sound from Alligator River NWR are the Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which provide even more opportunities for outdoor adventure.

OKEFENOKEE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, GA.

Forget what you’ve heard about dark and dreary swamps. The Okefenokee is a light-filled water wonderland teeming with wildlife.

If you want to see alligators, this is the place. The Okefenokee is home to thousands of alligators, and hundreds of them occasionally congregate near the Stephen C. Foster State Park entrance to the Okefenokee. This entrance is also a great spot to rent a

canoe or kayak and paddle into the heart of the swamp. Elevated camping platforms are scattered throughout the refuge, enabling you to embark on multi-day paddling expeditions along river trails crisscrossing the swamp. Islands are also scattered throughout the swamp for extraordinary hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Both birds and birders flock to the Okefenokee—one of the largest and wildest swaths of public lands east of the Mississippi.

The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge has been nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is already one of the few Dark Sky Parks in the eastern United States where stargazers soak in the stunning views of the deep universe.

Conservationists, outdoor enthusiasts, Tribes, and local communities recently saved the swamp from a proposed titanium mine on the edge of the Okefenokee. Thirty years ago, a similar mining proposal was halted by massive public opposition.

But more mining threats remain,

so organizations are working to expand the refuge and strengthen protections for the Okefenokee.

CANAAN VALLEY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, W.VA.

This outdoor oasis includes relict boreal forests from the last Ice Age and the largest wetland complex in Appalachia. Canaan Valley is also home to more than 31 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. In the winter, Canaan Valley is a world-renowned cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination.

The nearby town of Davis serves as a recreation hub for the wildlife refuge. The refuge expanded to 25,459 acres in 2024, making it the largest wildlife refuge in Appalachia.

GREAT DISMAL SWAMP, VA. AND N.C.

Colonists called it dismal, but the swamp is actually a light-filled water wonderland and the largest intact wetland forest in the East. More than 40 miles of hiking and biking trails lace the refuge, and paddlers can explore the 22-mile Dismal Swamp Canal Trail.

The swamp is also home to some of the largest black bears in the country, with the world-record 880-pound black bear observed in the region. Massive 600-year-old baldcypress trees line the waters of Lake Drummond in the heart of the refuge.

BEST OF THE REST

Here are six more superlative Southern refuges.

BACK BAY NWR, VA.: Paddling here is a highlight—and it’s easily accessible from Virginia Beach.

CAHABA RIVER NWR, ALA.: The Cahaba River flows for 200 miles and is Alabama’s longest freeflowing stream. This 3,600-acre refuge near Birmingham protects five endangered species of fish and mussels, and among the refuge’s 6.5 miles of the trails, the Piper Trail is a perfect day hike with overlooks on either end.

BLACKBEARD ISLAND NWR, GA.: Searching for the wildest

island in the East? This pirate haunt is completely undeveloped and provides a primordial coastal experience. Accessible only by boat, Blackbeard Island is crisscrossed with more than 15 miles of trails.

Explore ancient maritime forests, federally designated wilderness, and pristine windswept beaches.

BOND SWAMP NWR, GA.: Smack in the middle of Georgia is a 6,500-acre wildlife wonderland that is home to bald eagles, wood storks, black bears, and alligators.

Bond Swamp could become part of Georgia's first national park: the Occmulgee National Park and Preserve, which would be comanaged by the Muscogee Creek Nation.

CAPE ROMAIN NWR, S.C.: Almost all of this 66,000-acre refuge is designated wilderness, and about a quarter of the northern population of loggerhead sea turtles nest here. Two historic lighthouses and the Sewee Education Center are popular destinations.

EMBRACE THE COLD winters to help us appreciate the other seasons we get to enjoy. If the trees don’t lose all their leaves and look like sickly skeletons for three months, would you even appreciate the leaves when they’re green? No. You wouldn’t. I know I wouldn’t.

Have you ever met someone who lives in Arizona or Florida, where it’s sunny and warm all the time? They have a skewed outlook on the world because all they know is sun and warmth. That’s not healthy.

So, to help you better adjust to winter and approach it as our natural period of downtime, I’ve come up with a list of activities that are NOT OK to do in winter.

HOW TO BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

I CAN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THAT a lot of people are doing winter wrong. There seems to be two approaches to this season of gray skies, freezing rain, and ridiculously early sunsets. 1) Avoid winter altogether and escape to some place warm, or 2) charge through it and carry on with your regular activities as if nothing has changed. Both approaches are wrong. We need to embrace winter for the beautiful opportunity that it presents: the chance to nap often, eat starchy foods, and order an extra beer.

I understand that some of us have difficulty adjusting to winter.

There’s a medical condition and everything: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Symptoms include persistent sad, anxious, or empty moods. Those impacted by SAD might experience low energy and fatigue, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness. Treatment options include light therapy, psychotherapy, medication, or getting the hell out of town to some place sunny.

But I think people come down with SAD because they’re fighting

winter instead of embracing it.

Companies make special UV lights to put on your bedside tables, and doctors recommend you take periodic trips to the Southern Hemisphere to combat the symptoms. Some of us try hard to escape winter here in the Southern Appalachians. One couple I know flees to Florida for three months. I have other friends who schedule regular trips to warm destinations in search of sun.

I understand the urge, and I spent many years battling winter myself, but I’ve come to realize that these gray, cold winters are an important part of life. Instead of trying to avoid them, we should embrace the opportunity that winter presents. The opportunity to take it down a notch. Not go so hard.

Take naps. Read more books (watch more TV) and run less miles. Think of winter as a three-month-long rest day. It’s a free pass to do what you really want to do—wear fuzzy slippers all day and carry a bag of those little frosted donuts around with you in your pocket.

So yes, I’ve put on a little holiday weight. Too many winter stouts and

chocolate chip cookies? Not enough trail running and mountain biking?

Perhaps. Thanks for noticing. But those extra pounds are an important indicator that I’m approaching winter appropriately. Seeing me a little thick around the middle is like seeing the fallen leaves in the forest or Christmas decorations in the mall.

It’s the natural order of things.

There was a time in my life when I fought hard to keep from getting into winter shape (read: chubby), but I’ve decided in recent years to embrace the change and order the pie after dinner. Take a nap in the afternoon instead of going for a run.

This is what we’re supposed to do in winter, after all. Nature dictates it. And I’m happier because of it.

How can you come down with SAD, when you realize that winter is when you’re supposed to eat an entire pecan pie…while sitting in a hot tub.

People have forgotten that we need this period of down time.

Look at black bears. They pack on weight by digging through my trash cans and spend the cold months retreating to their dens where they chill out and, I assume, binge Netflix. We need these dull, gray

• Putting on a headlamp and running in the dark after work.

Stop it. Nobody is impressed.

Go to the gym and scroll on your phone instead of lifting weights like the rest of us.

• Wearing ski clothes to go mountain biking because it’s so damn cold. Stop it. You look silly.

• Eating salads. Salads are for summer. So are açai bowls.

Order the stew.

ACTIVITIES THAT ARE OK IN WINTER

• Saying you’re going to read a book but really just napping.

• Watching every episode of Saved By The Bell.

• Skiing. Is skiing exercise?

Technically, yes, but skiing is encouraged because skiing is mostly downtime. You spend six hours at the resort and accrue a whopping 47 minutes of actual activity. Most of the day is spent sitting down and eating snacks.

Sitting down and eating snacks is seasonally appropriate and highly encouraged.

Embracing winter for the healthy respite that it presents isn’t that hard. When in doubt, do less, eat more. Hydrate with warm beverages, preferably with a nip of whiskey in them. Resist the urge to maintain any level of fitness. If you’re doing winter right, putting on your ski boots should feel like you’re doing high intensity intervals.

“Angel of Telluride” Rising Colorado jamgrass band Magoo get an assist from mandolin legend Sam Bush on the new single “Angel of Telluride,” an earnest love song about serendipitously meeting someone at a festival who ultimately changes your life. “Light at the End of the Day” The ‘Dusters are celebrating two decades as a band with the release of their 20th studio album. Aptly titled “20/20,” this collection of 20 new songs at the close of the band’s second decade finds the group continuing their bluegrass mastery. Andy Hall’s “Light at the End of the Day” is unapologetically hopeful, a potent call for optimism in the face of struggle that features some tremendous fiddle work from Jeremy Garrett. – D.S.

ESTHER ROSE

“That’s My DJ” Indie-country singer-songwriter Esther Rose recently moved to

Santa Fe, and through her partner she started getting into the city’s rave scene. She vividly documents the experience, not with an EDM track, but rather through an alluring, atmospheric folk song that’s ultimately about embracing a new way of life. The single follows up Rose’s excellent album, “Want,” which was released last May. – J.F.

SAMMY BRUE

“Lonely Mornings” While barely a teenager, Sammy Brue used to hang outside of clubs in his native Ogden, Utah, hoping to meet his musical heroes. Brue ended up kindling a relationship with Justin Townes Earle, who took the young songwriter under his wing. “Lonely Mornings” is from Brue’s latest record, a collection of songs based on tidbits, lyric sheets, and song fragments left behind by Earle after his passing in 2020 and bequeathed to Brue by his widow.

It’s a powerful tribute to a mentor

THE NAKED SUN

“Dreamin’” Singer-guitarist Drew Harris of Philadelphia’s the Naked Sun penned “Dreamin’,” his homage to the power and beauty of the wilderness, while sitting on the banks of a lake in Vermont. The song reads, and sounds, like the chronicle of a love affair, and in a way it is, but Harris isn’t pining for his lover. Instead, it’s the sheer awe-inspiring majesty of the great outdoors that has him waxing romantic. – D.S.

STEPHEN WILSON JR

“Gary” Stephen Wilson Jr. is an alt-country troubadour of the moment, selling out theaters behind the success of his debut album, “Son of Dad.” Late last year he followed that up with this standalone single, a pulsing heartland rock jam that celebrates the value of working-class heroes. – J.F.
