Welcome to Summerset care Summerset is a business that was founded on care.

It was the vision of our founder, John O’Sullivan, to create a retirement community that our own parents would be happy to call home. A place that puts the respect for its residents at the heart of everything it does. This philosophy continues to guide us today.

We have retirement villages around the country, offering fully independent living and a variety of care options. Over 5,000 New Zealanders have chosen to call our retirement villages home, and we think that’s pretty special.

Summerset opened its first retirement village in Wanganui in 1997. Since then we’ve grown to become one of the country’s largest and most respected operators in the retirement village and aged care sector.

Life at Summerset

Wherever you live in a Summerset village, you’ll have access to a range of community facilities, activities and events.

Summerset villages are designed and built for their environment, so facilities may vary - but they often include a Divine CafĂŠ, communal lounge with a large screen TV, piano and pool table, library, and a hair and beauty clinic based in the village centre.

Most villages also have an all-weather bowling green, swimming and spa pool, and an exercise room.

And if you’re keen to get involved, there are activities and events to keep you busy. Our on-site Activities Coordinator and Diversional Therapist make sure we offer activities that cater to a wide range of resident interests and abilities.

And there are always opportunities to head to the shops and local community, as well as further afield, in our Summerset courtesy van.

Care you can trust If you’re looking for extra care and support for yourself, a friend or family member, you can be confident that a home in a Summerset village may well be the right choice for you.

Summerset retirement villages are designed so that, as your needs change, you can access different levels of support. While you live independently in a Summerset villa or cottage, we offer support with cleaning, meals and some aspects of personal care.

Should you need nursing care, there’s no need to move from the village; we can provide rest

home-level care in our serviced apartments and hospital-level care in our care centre.

Nursing support is available in our modern, selfcontained serviced apartments as well as in our care centres.

All our nursing support is certified by the Ministry of Health.

Living in a villa or cottage Options include two or three bedroom villas and two bedroom cottages. If you need support, there is a range of packages and add-on services available.

Our homes are designed with accessibility as a priority and include features to provide peace of mind, including; slip resistant flooring, and bathrooms with accessible showers and grab rails. We pay attention to the little things too, like making sure handles on doors and drawers are easy to use, and ensuring all switches, power sockets and door handles are placed at a convenient height.

Living in a serviced apartment Summerset serviced apartments are modern, mobility-friendly, warm, and full of features to support independence With options for both couples and singles, serviced apartments offer a double bedroom, a spacious separate living area with kitchenette, and an ensuite including accessible shower, grab rails and slip resistant floor.

Serviced apartments are conveniently located in the main building, with easy access to village facilities.

Other benefits: Ministry of Health Certification Summerset serviced apartments are certified by the Ministry of Health to provide rest home-level care.

Understanding the costs of living in a Summerset serviced apartment There are various costs you’ll need to pay when you first move into a Summerset serviced apartment, while you live there and when you leave.

A Deposit.

A Weekly Fee.

A Licence Payment.

A fee to cover your service or care package.

Your Repayment Sum, which is your Licence Payment, less the Deferred Management Fee and any outstanding charges

Any fees for user-pays services you choose to receive e.g. internet and phone. This fee is based on what you use.

Note: you may be entitled to a Government subsidy for rest home-level care.

Care packages The cost of our service and care packages (Supported Living, Supported Living Plus, Rest Home Care, Hospital Care) varies from village to village. The cost of rest home care also varies between District Health Board Regions.

Government subsidies for rest home-level care If you have been assessed by the Needs Assessment and Service Coordination (NASC) as needing rest home-level care, you may be entitled to a subsidy to help you pay for your care. See the ‘What’s Next?’ section of this brochure for more information.

Summerset care centre

In a Summerset care centre, you’ll have the choice of a standard, premium or deluxe room, with nursing care available on site, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Rooms in the care centre are spacious and will accommodate a comfortable chair and other small items of furniture. Sky TV and a phone can be added at an additional cost.

Care rooms come with an ensuite bathroom including accessible shower, grab rails and non-slip floors.

Summerset care centres are certified by the Ministry of Health to provide rest home and hospital-level care.

Our rest home care and hospital care packages are available in our care centres.

Your room in the care centre can be paid for privately or be partially or fully subsidised by the Government. The subsidy you are eligible for is subject to asset and income testing and is determined by Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ). Premium and deluxe rooms will attract a private surcharge.

Costs of Hospital and Rest Home care vary from village to village and District Health Board Region.

You can talk to your Care Centre Manager about the costs of living in a Summerset care centre – they’ll be happy to answer all your questions and provide full details.

A NASC assessment will determine the level of care you will require.

The local District Health Board (DHB) determines the daily rate for rest home or hospital care. This may be subsidised by the Government through a residential care subsidy and is invoiced monthly.

If you’ve been assessed by NASC as needing rest home–level or hospital level care, an assessment by WINZ will determine if you’re eligible for a residential care subsidy.

Memory care centre Summerset is one of the country’s leaders in next-generation memory care.

Our industry-leading memory care centre’s design is based on world-class dementia living, including information from Stirling University in Scotland.

The university is renowned as an international centre of knowledge and expertise dedicated to improving the lives of people with dementia, and a world leader in dementia care design.

Secure homely environment: Summerset’s memory care centres are specially designed to provide a homely and safe environment for people needing rest home level dementia care, at risk of wandering.

Our generous apartments offer open plan living in a secure facility, with a separate double bedroom and large ensuite.

This offers residents plenty of space to furnish their home as they would like.

Respite and Short Term care If you need care while your family is away or while recovering from a hospital stay, you’re welcome at Summerset for short term or respite care. You can stay with us for one day through to a month or longer. Subsidies may be available, so please contact the Care Centre Manager for more information.

Our unique way finding, large open communal areas and outdoor courtyard garden provides freedom of movement and independence.

What’s next?

Making the decision to move into a retirement village and choosing the right level of support and care can be challenging. So it’s important to get the best information and seek the right advice.

Involve your family and friends in your decision.

Get independent advice from a lawyer, ideally with experience in retirement village matters.

Talk to your GP or other health professionals about the level of care you may need.

Talk to our local Care Centre Manager, Village Manager or Sales Specialist-Care about living in a Summerset village.

Next steps

If you’re considering rest home or hospital-level care, there are a few further things to think about.

NASC needs assessment

If you have an age-related disability which is likely to continue for more than six months and makes it hard for you to do what you should be able to do on your own, you are eligible for a NASC needs assessment.

This looks at how much and what kind of assistance you need to live comfortably, as well as taking into account what you want from life, your resources (including friends and family) and your physical abilities.

You may have already received a NASC assessment, but if not, the assessment request can be made by the person needing care or by a family member, friend, GP, district nurse or carer.

Obtaining a subsidy

If you’ve been assessed by the NASC as needing rest home-level care, you may be eligible for a subsidy to help you pay for your care.

WINZ will look at your assets and income and based on these, work out how much you have to pay towards the cost of your care.

Resident Admission Agreement

If you’ve been assessed as requiring rest home or hospital care, we’ll let you know immediately whether or not there’s a place available in the village of your choice, or if there is a place at another Summerset village nearby.

Once you’ve made your decision, we’ll talk you through our Resident Admission Agreement.

This legal document sets out the responsibilities of both Summerset and the resident, and the conditions on which you can stay with us, and must be signed prior to you receiving care.

What if you need care right away?

If there’s a bed available in our care centre, you can move in right away – even if you haven’t been assessed. You will, however, have to pay privately until your assessment has been completed, at which time the Government may back-date any subsidy owing to you.

Summerset was the first New Zealand retirement village group to receive the Lifemark™ – an assurance that your home will be right for your stage of life.

All Summerset villages are Lifemark™ accessibility approved.

We are a member of the Retirement Villages Association.

This assures you that our practices and processes are in accordance with relevant legislation and we are committed to providing the highest levels of service to our residents.

Contracts with GPs and pharmacists Each village with a care centre has a contracted GP who visits on a regular basis. Other health practitioners – including physiotherapists, and podiatrists – also visit the village from time to time.

Summerset is an active and long-standing member of the New Zealand Aged Care Association. This industry association is committed to ensuring the sector provides excellent care for New Zealand’s older citizens.

All our serviced apartments and care centres are regularly audited and certified by the Ministry of Health.

We work with Careerforce to support any unqualified caregivers to complete a National Certificate in Foundations Skills (Level 2) during their first year with us.

Most of our caregivers are already qualified in some way, many choosing to further their education and become nurses.
