It has now been almost two years since I had the opportunity to purchase Haras du Mézeray, the cornerstone of the project you know as ‘Sumbe’. Fate has been particularly generous to me this year, which is now coming to a close, as it brought me great joy and gratification so soon after my first investments in France. I do, however, welcome these successes with humility for I know the importance of continuing to perform at the highest level as well as the dedication and patience it all requires.
Belbek’s spectacular win in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère was a turning point for me in many ways. It gave me my first taste of the elusive Group 1 success, thus rewarding over a decade of unwavering efforts as an owner. Coming from my first French bred crop, Belbek also laid a stepping stone for my ambitions as a breeder, and I cannot help but see this as a good omen for my aspirations on French soil. Just a few days after, my British-trained colt Charyn landed the important Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte (Gr.2), unveiling some Classic potential. These two horses summarise my vision of Sumbe’s future as a brand: synergy and emulation with a global reach in sight. Finally, the unbeaten Padishakh is another addition to our shortlist of Classic prospects after giving two dazzling performances and leading the way to new accomplishments in 2023. My quest in this industry is not limited to breeding my own stallions as the international champion Mishriff will be joining Sumbe in 2023. A French Derby winner in 2020, he topped the World Rankings on turf the following year on par with Adayar and only 2 pounds shy of Knicks Go, whom he had nevertheless beaten on dirt in the 2021 Saudi Cup. Only a handful of horses become Derby winners, but even fewer go on to fall into the superstar category. With a sire line of first crop classic winners hailing from Dubawi and a very strong maternal pedigree where every desired aptitude can be found, I am certain he will cause a well-deserved interest among all breeders. Just as with Golden Horde, I will support Mishriff with my own broodmare band and I hope you will follow me in this regard.
Without a doubt, nothing would be possible without the tireless work and dedication of the people around me. A brand-new team, led by my long-time trusted advisor Tony Fry, is now devoted to the task of carrying on the legacy of these outstanding farms that are now the divisions of Sumbe and achieving new victories in this amazing industry that continues to make me fall in love with it every day.

SUMBE
A GLOBAL BRAND WITH LOCAL ROOTS
Beyond being an up-and-coming global brand that has recently made it into the industry’s spotlight, Sumbe is deeply rooted in land and tradition. With a forward-looking vision and a progressive strategy since its inception, Sumbe has developed into a cross-channel ensemble of nearly 650 hectares by integrating carefully selected farms and seizing opportunities at the right time. We are driven by global ambition and deeply believe that both the French and English systems have much to offer. Soil quality is at the heart of our concern for it is instrumental to both the biomechanical development of foals and to their nutritional fulfilment. For instance, our historic farm Hesmonds Stud, beyond its ideal location in East Sussex, had been very lightly grazed for two decades prior to its takeover. With vast stretches of preserved grounds available for our foals to thrive, our three farms provide a truly perfect environment to capitalise on nature’s best intent.
Although Haras de Montfort & Préaux was almost a turnkey operation, we have spent the last couple of years upgrading the existing facility to the highest standards available on the market, with a new foaling unit built from the ground up and fully equipped with CCTV and Equilume lights. In turn, since last year, Haras du Mézeray has benefited from investments and a thorough refurbishment program, following our constant commitment to safety, comfort and efficiency.
Horsemanship and experience come on top of Sumbe’s values. Since we believe in leaving no stone unturned, our teams provide daily monitoring of our stock under the technical guidance of Tony Fry, Nurlan Bizakov’s advisor and chief operations manager, for over a decade. Together they implement a rigorous methodology that has allowed Sumbe to reach a turning point in 2022. Carrying on the legacy of farms that have produced so many champions over time is no small feat and we are confident that our future successes will echo those left in the past for decades to come.

MISHRIFF is one of the most successful horses of the past few years. Playing in his own backyard at 10 furlongs, he was smart enough to stretch out on occasion and deliver his devastating turn of foot over the Classic trip, as well as to instantly switch surfaces. A remarkable winner at 2, he stormed the French Derby in 2020 and later reached champion status when posting winning scores in the Saudi Cup, Dubai Sheema Classic and Juddmonte International in 2021. With a bankroll above the €13.000.000 mark, Mishriff is one of the world’s all-time richest racehorses. A handsome athlete and a genius all-rounder, he is the result of selection at its best.

Did you notice that Mishriff is a member of his sire's first crop? A 4-year-old homebred, Mishriff, by the Faisal-raced Make Believe, a Dubawi-line stallion, won the French Derby last year. What is it about first-crop Classic winners? Mishriff's sire Make Believe is a first-crop son of Makfi and won the G1 French 2000 Guineas. And Makfi, a first-crop son of G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Dubawi, accounted for the G1 2000 Guineas itself. Dubawi, of course, was from the first and only crop of Dubai Millennium. First-crop Classic success isn't a fluke.

A model of consistency, sharp yet composed, he could adapt to any situation. After posting an easy score in the Richmond Stakes Gr.2 and a near miss in the Middle Park Stakes Gr.1 as a 2-year-old, he bounced back to land the Commonwealth Cup Gr.1 at 3 in dramatic fashion.

From the family of champion fillies Serena’s Song and Sophisticat, Golden Horde bears the influence of two of the most prominent sire-lines of our time. His grandsire Dark Angel made a mark on the general studbook once again by adding four more Gr.1 winners to his record in 2022, namely Mangoustine (French 1000 Guineas), Mysterious Night (Pattison Summer Stakes), Alfareeq (Jebel Hatta) and Top Ranked (TEB Epsom). Furthermore, Golden Horde is out of a Pivotal mare, whose legendary impact as a broodmare sire has lived on in 2022 at Gr.1 level through the likes of Tenebrism (Prix Jean Prat), Pearls Galore (Matron Stakes), Nashwa (French Oaks) and Mendocino (Grosser Preis von Berlin) over trips ranging from 7 to 12 furlongs.
A masculine horse and beautiful walker with an excellent temperament, he passed down his best features to an eye-catching first crop. Cast in their sire’s mould, his first offspring will be highly anticipated yearlings in 2023. Golden Horde will suit both breeders with an appetite for fast juveniles, and those looking to sharpen up solid or professional pedigrees.
We are delighted by his first crop of foals out of our own mares. We visited our client’s farm as well, and so far they appear to share our enthusiasm. They all have a lovely balance with an athletic walk and, just as important, fantastic temperaments. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…
