THE EDITOR'S NOTES Hi guys, It’s Rasheka, and welcome to our first edition (technically - issue, but who cares?). I’d like to thank you for subscribing to our quarterly magazine. Here at Youth magazine we strive to provide our subscribers with content that is relevant and important to you. We’re a diverse group of young people in age and race - we want to uplift and give a voice to talented young people all over the UK. Don’t be sad - in case you miss us too much, check out our website where we’ll posting daily interviews and blogs with your favourite celebrities. Hope to see you in our next issue lovies. Farvel! Holidays: the essential guide If you ever plan on doing holiday then you need to keep on reading

The Office for National Statistics claims that UK residents made 2 million visits abroad in 2016. So if that trends trend continues this year make sure that you are prepared. Below are some tricks and tips that I think will help you while you go on your travels.

Don’t Go on Holiday with People You Don’t Like

Holidays are supposed to be fun. A time in your life that you will remember forever. So, don’t go with people who you can’t stand. Holidays are not cheap so imagine spending all that money to have a terrible time. Moral of the story is go with people you like.

If You Have to Try and Keep It Civil

However, if the unfortunate event occurs where you have to go on holiday with people you don’t like try your best not to spark any confrontation. It’s not a good idea to fall out people in a place which is foreign to you. You all need to stick together and when you get back home then you have free reign to be as confrontational as you please.

Get to the Airport at least 3 hours before the flight

This so important, you don’t want to be late for flight or potentially miss your flight. Give yourself plenty of time to go through security checks, go duty free shopping and prepare for your flight. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Layer your Clothes

The weather anywhere you go can be unpredictable so make sure you have enough clothes so that you have lots of choices. My advice would be bring lots of light clothes that you can layer so that way it won’t be heavy for your suitcase and you will be ready for anything (clothes wise) whatever the weather.

TIP: Check the weather before you go!

Check Luggage allowances (and overall luggage rules)

Some of the air ports are out here to not just take you to your destination but to take your hard-earned money Make sure you weight that day your bags before you go. Sometimes different airports have different luggage rules so make sure you check the rules from the airport you are arriving and departing from.

TIP: use a bathroom scale to weigh your luggage. Trust me it works.

Bring a lightweight bag

Please don’t be that person who forgets to bring a day to day bag that you take with you while you go about your travels and then you end up using the bag you used as hand luggage. It’s not a good look and it makes your life harder.

Lady Vee: Forgive me Mum, but I am definitely a Daddy’s girl. I might be biased because he really spoiled me; but he’s also taught me so much and really pushed me to venture into my creative side. He’s not your typical African parent that only values “professional” career aspirations. He paid for my music, dance and acting lessons as well as encouraging me to join debate and science clubs.

I feel like a lot of kids don’t get those kind of experiences as they leave secondary they’re really confused and have to go through a relentless trial and error through subjects because they never got the chance to explore their choices beforehand. For that, I love and appreciate all that my dad has done for me.

Lady Vee: Oh no baby… That’s her man now. It’s so mad now though, all these couples I was rooting for; the men have ended up cheating and the women take them back. That’s them though – not you. You realise it takes effort to cheat, deep it, you’ll be texting someone, convo gets heated, you arrange to meet up, you get ready to meet, you meet up and then you do the ting. If you really loved and respected your girl, within all these steps it took to cheat something inside you would have snapped like: “woah what the fuck am I doing?” So no!

Lolita Damsam: Do you mind clearing up what the disagreement was about?

Lady Vee: Well… Janessa “quote tweeted” – I think that’s what its called (lets out a giggle and shrug) but yeah, the tweet was in regards to the Rated Awards and she said something about being the best female grime and rap artists in the UK right now (pulls a face). So… when there are artists like Ms Banks, Genesis, Nadia Rose – bruv even me, I’ll put my name up there too – but yeah when there are women like us that have made bangers and made it internationally – several seats need to be had. At first I wasn’t mad and was going to scroll past it… but then I thought “Rah… the cheek” and had to take her down a peg. She’s doing bits though, I’ll give her that, but to claim to be the best female rapper of the UK is a reach and a half.

Anyways - it’s been squashed, she admitted she got a bit cocky and apologised. I think she’ll go far though; her style – clothing wise - is unmatched. I think she’s just young and excited.

So Bad It's Good?

What is GORPCORE? Let’s be honest: minimalist, streamlined fashion is getting boring. Over the past few years, we’ve seen increasingly exaggerated silhouettes and colours storming down the runway and on our favourite influencers, and honestly, we’re here for it - but recently, things have been getting kiind of extreme. 2017 been the year of the throwback - we’ve welcomed back juicy velour tracksuits, flared jeans and even Nike Air Monarchs - the certified dad crep from 1987. In fact, you might want to try and dig out your dad’s old shoes (if they’re in good condition) because dad shoes are back in a big way this year.

In 2013 , the Air Monarch was Nike’s most sold trainer - and now, 30 years after it’s original release, sneakerheads are giving the Monarch it’s platform in the fashion world. Best of all, a pair is only going to set you back £35 at Sports Direct.

However, if you really want to go high fashion into the dad shoes trend, the Balenciaga ‘Triple S’ (so named because of the shoes’ triple soles) are gonna cost you a hefty £700 - that is if you can still find them, that is.

But back to the big question - why the fuck is this clunky look so cool right now?

If you’ve been following fashion and trends, you may have come across the term ‘gorpcore’ - the trend embracing the practicality in clothes - no matter how unfashionable it may seem. We’ve seen a lot of people rocking this trend, from uber-fashionable celebs like ASAP Rocky (pictured) and Rihanna to our favourite influencers and models. We’re talking warm fleeces, North Face puffers, Patagonia tees, Birkenstock sandals and bum bags - staples of hikers and outdoorsmen worldwide (a far cry from the inner-city fashionistas currently adopting the trend). In fact, these outdoorsmen are to thank for the name of the trend. The word “gorp” is really an acronym for ‘Good Old Raisins and Peanuts’, or trail mix to you and me - a common hiker snack. This trend is all about your clothes looking good, yet functional; embracing the humour of looking like a middle aged dad, but making it fashion. Gorpcore is all about letting your clothes transport you somewhere you know you probably wouldn’t really want to go, but feeling great anyway.

Work experience: Work experiences: As part of my work experience, I had the opportunity to work with Exceptional Individuals, an organisation that helps people with dyslexia get into employment. During this time, I educated myself on something I have been quite naive about.

Throughout my life, I have come across people with dyslexia, but have always been unsure about what it meant to have dyslexia. Whether it was someone in my class or someone in public, I always thought that dyslexia meant that you couldn’t read or write. As ignorant as it sounds, this is what I thought!

So, naturally, when Exceptional Individuals got in contact with me and asked if I would be their content creator, I accepted with haste.

During a recent event, ‘Great minds think different’ (the word different being ironic), I was able to talk to the founder of Exceptional Individuals, Matt Boyd. As he is dyslexic himself, it was a great oppotunity to get an insight into his personal experiences dealing with his dyslexia in work and everyday life.

Interview with Matt Boyd Founder of Exceptional Individuals

What is EI?

EI is an employment partnership with people with dyslexia and dyspraxia and other neurodiverse differences, we support people from all different backgrounds, all different ages looking for careers in completely different areas, whether they’re self employed or they want to become a director of a big bank, we support them all.

What does neurodiversity and dyslexia mean to you?

To me, neurodiversity means, a way to think different, way to overcome problems in a unique way. You may find some things more challenging, but other things you’re going to excel in and it’s the things that you excel in, is what we focus on, because dyslexia is a way of thinking differently and is an opportunity to exploit.

How did EI come about?

EI started through personal experience, from myself and some of my friends. I’d gratuated university, had lots of support, tried to look for jobs and that’s where the challenges where for me. In the job market, they use very traditional ways of recruiting people, like, online tests, long application forms and other ways that don’t work hand in hand with a dyslexic’s personal skill set. I looked at what was happening, there was this pity appoarch and very much like, “please employ these people, feel sorry for them”. I thought people with dyslexia and dyspracxia brought something different and that should be the focus and having a support network, so there was an opportunity for us to start something and that’s why we started.

Unleash Your Creativity At YOUTH we believe creativity must be embraced and celebrated. That is why we thought that it would be a great idea to have a creative competition. We decided as it is the 1st edition to do an internal competition.

Below is what we believe to be the best of the best of our creativity.

AS A TEAm we voted and thought that the winner was Rasheka with her poem 'It's SO subtle'.

It’s so subtle.

Eyes everywhere when entering shop, cash in hand but it still won’t stop. followed around, while walking up and down.

Look back, Then they stare at you.

It’s so subtle.

The waiter walks up and whispered ‘before you take your seat...’ ‘...can you pay before you eat? ’ the desire to complain, get justice for what is right but there can’t be any conformity to a stereotype.

It’s so subtle.

In the mirror lies, a nose, skin and lips, The staring gets more intense because of the hatred of the hips.

It’s too much trouble when, it’s curly and free, they will touch it and won’t let it be. a little girl with two dolls playing with joy, the one that looks like her she hates and wants to destroy.

The little girl has a self-hatred growing slowly within, hearts bleed seeing it begin.

It’s so subtle.

Bleaching of the hair and skin too, Eyes turn from brown to blue.

Attempt to claim a higher social class, in the hope to somehow pass.

In future someone will have the same point as mine because nothing will have changed as everyone will just say it is fine.

The truth is we are always going to be 3 steps behind, It’s so subtle.

There is a lot of criticism and misunderstanding with the term ‘black lives matter’. As many people believe that the movement is a loose structure and has no clear goal.

This has formed many opposing parties groups such as ‘blue lives matter’ and ‘white lives matter’ who are both against the black lives matter movement as they claim that BLM is racist and creates more hate and it’s just as an excuse for violence.

However black lives matter is an organisation that sheds light onto existing racism and exposing people who are in authority that abuse their power for example the police. The movement is about raising awareness about the issue of police brutality it and has united people all over the world.

The argument of ‘all lives matter’ has been brought up many times and yes, I agree all lives DO matter however being part of the BLM movement doesn’t mean black lives are the only ones that matter. The term ‘black lives matter’ to use as an analogy is like if there is a neighbourhood and a house was on fire, the fire department wouldn’t show up and start putting water on all the houses because ‘all houses matter’ they would show up and they’d turn the water on the house that was burning because that’s the house that needs the help the most I believe my generation is taking on the torch of a very age-old fight for black liberation but also liberation for everyone and injustice anywhere is still injustice everywhere. The black lives matter organisation has received support from both Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton and is supported by millions of people in the world.
