DOCUMENTARY DRAMA: W8ING (WAITING)

W8ING

SYNOPSIS ▸ Two teenagers and their mum are in a court room waiting room. They are going to court for their sibling / son whose case is for robbery. They express their worry and concerns with each other as they wait and talk about the memories they have of their brother, shown through flashbacks (in still images), and how they don’t believe he did what he is being accused of. The title w8ing is a play on words, but with an 8 in it to represent the 8 minutes that they are waiting before they get called into the court. Anchored text will show that 8 minutes is counting down and by the end of that time, their names are called and they are told to go to court room 4. They get up and leave the the documentary drama ends with a shot of the three chairs, suggesting an infinite cycle of cases and waiting. This drama will be shot in one take to make it realistic and this will help the audience empathise with the characters as they will have to wait too.

RATIONALE

▸ My project will be based around the word ‘time’ and that time passing is inevitable. I will also focus on how relationships/people and how different experiences can change us over time. The idea of time fits in well with courts, as you have a designated time slot for each case. This documentary drama will focus on how a family come to terms with their problems while waiting and while you don't necessarily learn a lot about the family, just understanding what they are going through can help you identify with them. There are a lot of sayings that are associated with time, for example, ‘time heals all wounds’ and I want to show how the family cope in their own way. I will somewhat focus on the word ‘memory’ as well, as my character will be reminiscing their time spend with their brother/son before he gets arrested.

▸ Anyone can go through this kinds of problems and instead of the drama of a court room, I want to focus on the waiting and how separation and imprisonment can affect families. If you turn the number 8 on the side, it is the infinity symbol, this communicates the anticipation of time moving slowly when you’re waiting for a decision/answer. The build up to something positive or negative can be nerve-racking and can take a toll on people more than the actual thing itself.

FEASIBILITY ▸ My project won’t be that hard to complete, the longest part of production will be the waiting room screen and as its only one location, it will be easy to film. I will have to take still images for the flashbacks in different locations, which can be done after the main scene had been filmed. I have access to my own camera, audio device and laptop, so if I need to reshoot anything, that would be possible. This project is funded by City & Islington College and I have access to the revenant software and equipment that I need to complete this project.
